Seven-team women's IPL 'four years away' – Sourav Ganguly

BCCI president asks state associations to widen talent pool from 50-60 to 150-160 to make it a reality

As India head into a Women’s T20 World Cup year in search of their maiden title, there has been a chorus among the current and former internationals – both from India and overseas- to have a full-fledged women’s IPL. However, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly thinks such a tournament – involving seven or eight teams – is at least “four years away”.”You need to understand the practicality of it,” he told . “You need a lot more women players. I see that in four years’ time, to get a seven-team IPL with the best women players [in participation].”After what began as an exhibition in 2018, the BCCI turned the Women’s T20 Challenge into a three-team event in Jaipur in 2019.Senior players and coaches unanimously gave the tournament a thumbs-up. Encouraged by the response, the board has initiated discussions on converting it into a four-team event, with each side playing the other twice.India’s successful hosting of South Africa in Surat, where record crowds turned up to cheer both teams, has got the BCCI thinking about hosting next year’s Women’s T20 challenge there before taking it to other cities as well. While this is a direct consequence of increased popularity in the women’s game since India’s stupendous run to the final at the 2017 World Cup, the domestic game is yet to grow at the same rate.To some extent, BCCI’s re-introduction of the A tours for women is seen as a step towards bridging the gap between domestic and international cricket. An India A team will go to Australia on a shadow tour before the senior team’s tri-series in January, with a number of hopefuls having the opportunity to stake claim for a T20 World Cup berth.Steps like these, according to Ganguly, will only help increase the push for women’s cricket. At the same time, he also wants the state associations to do much more to widen their talent pool.”You have to let the state association teams get stronger, a lot of them are getting stronger,” he said. “The push for women’s cricket has been enormous over the last few years. Three years down the line, when you have 150-160 players, you can take the IPL forward. Right now, we have 50-60 players. With the push BCCI has for women’s cricket, that will only increase.”

Fabrizio Romano drops Liverpool claim on 39 y/o boss "in addition to Alonso"

da marjack bet: With a summer to-do list a mile long, FSG's first port of call will be to find the future of the Liverpool dugout at Anfield.

Liverpool's managerial manhunt continues

da bet7: As the news of Jurgen Klopp's departure finally sets in for the Liverpool faithful, attention has now turned as to who will follow up the German's impressive spell with the Premier League club.

Liverpool man holding meetings to pick next club after exit decision made

He is planning to use the two-week international break to weigh up his options.

ByBen Browning Mar 16, 2024

The immediate front-runner for the vacancy has been Xabi Alonso who has made waves this season as the manager of Bayer Leverkusen. Sitting seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga, the ex-Liverpool player will be in demand this summer meaning the Reds will face stiff competition to secure his services.

Xabi Alonso in action for Liverpool.

With Bayern Munich also in the market for a new manager, Alonso may have the pick of his former sides when it comes to choosing his next destination. Remaining in Germany could prove the best arrangement for the Spaniard in the short term, making a move to the Bavarian giants the more likely outcome.

As the search for a new boss continues, Fabrizio Romano has given Liverpool fans a big clue as to who their side could go after if they are to miss out on Alonso.

Fabrizio Romano drops Liverpool manager hint

Whilst Alonso remains firmly at the forefront of FSG's search for a new manager, Romano has claimed that Liverpool also have their eye on other targets. He reports that the Reds are one of a number of sides eyeing up Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim with the journalist stating:

“We know many clubs will be busy with hiring new managers over the summer, that Bayern and Liverpool will fight for Xabi Alonso.

“I told you before and I’ll keep repeating it…. Keep an eye on Ruben Amorim, the Sporting manager, because many clubs are looking at him, including in England as he’s appreciated in the Premier League.

Sporting's Ruben Amorim

“We already say that he could be another candidate for Liverpool in addition to Xabi Alonso, but we know that Bayern are looking at both of them. Let’s see what’s gonna happen.”

It had been previously reported that Amorim was on a shortlist for the vacancy in the dugout at Anfield with Julian Nagelsmann also on the Reds' radar. Whilst there is yet to be a clear favourite for the job, securing the services of Amorim could represent a major coup for FSG.

The 39-year-old has led Sporting to the top of the Liga Portugal, boasting a game in hand over rivals Benfica. Amorim has also guided his side to the latter stages of the domestic cup competition, bolstering their chances of picking up silverware this season.

Having scored more goals than anyone else in the division, it is safe to say that Amroim may well be a fitting successor to Klopp's brand of 'heavy metal football' that has earned unanimous acclaim on Merseyside.

Ruben Amorim encourages his Sporting CP side from the sidelines.

Whilst Alonso would be the obvious choice for many in regards to the next Liverpool boss, approaching Amorim could prove an equally effective decision and save FSG the headache of entering a bidding war for the Spaniard's services.

Sam Curran bags three, but Grant Stewart and Harry Podmore stand firm for Kent

Curran’s release from England Test bubble tempered by visiting duo at The Oval

Sam Curran celebrates dismissing Ollie Robinson•Getty Images

Grant Stewart made 58 and Harry Podmore scored a fine 42-ball 47 from No. 8 as the pair added 73 for the seventh wicket and Kent reached a determined 295 for 8 after being put in by Surrey on the opening day of their Bob Willis Trophy fixture at the Kia Oval.Sam Curran returned from England Test duty to take 3 for 65 for Surrey but it was the lower-order partnership between Podmore and Stewart that ultimately edged the day Kent’s way after a battling performance. There were also half-century stands for the second and fifth wickets, respectively by Daniel Bell-Drummond and Jack Leaning and then by Marcus O’Riordan and Darren Stevens, to frustrate Surrey’s attack. At 99 for 4 in mid-afternoon, however, it looked like it would be Surrey’s day after Bell-Drummond fell for a fighting 111-ball 45 – leg-before to Adam Finch – and Ollie Robinson was also pinned in front for 17 by Curran. But O’Riordan, a contemporary of England’s new batting star Zak Crawley when they were both at Tonbridge School, reached 30 from 65 balls while veteran allrounder Stevens made 24, before edging Rikki Clarke to Ben Foakes behind the stumps, as the pair led a counter-attack with a stand of 55 in 13 overs. And then, after O’Riordan had thin-edged Curran to Foakes in the second over after tea, pushing at one angled across him from the left-arm seamer, Podmore arrived to play an excellent knock that included six fours and a big six sweetly struck into the new Peter May Stand construction site off Amar Virdi.Stewart also drove offspinner Virdi for a straight six and hit five fours in his 103-ball innings, before being eighth out in the day’s 87th over when he went down the pitch to Virdi, missed an attempted lofted drive and was bowled leg stump. The 22-year-old O’Riordan, just nine days older than Crawley, impressed in what is just his fifth first-class game. He has been getting his Kent chance in this abbreviated summer largely because of the absences of Crawley and other senior players, and despite his offspin being reportedly his strongest cricketing suit he has looked very comfortable taking various top-order batting roles in the past month. In his fourth Willis Trophy appearance, O’Riordan came in at 99 for 3 and resisted gamely, hitting five fours before departing at 170 for 6. The efforts of Podmore, Stewart and Matt Milnes, who finished on 22 not out after a handy 49-run stand with Stewart, then ensured that Kent were marginally the happier at stumps.Earlier Kent had fought hard to get to 56 for 1 by lunch, with Bell-Drummond joined by Leaning in a partnership of 58 in 25 overs after Jordan Cox had gone in the ninth over, leg-before to a Matt Dunn yorker.Leaning eventually went for 21, chipping Curran to mid on off a leading edge in the sixth over after lunch, and just before his dismissal by Finch, acting captain Bell-Drummond was hit on the shoulder by the impressive 20-year-old paceman, making his second Surrey appearance on loan from Worcestershire.Finch, though, then had to wait until deep into the final session to get his second scalp, that of Podmore who carved to backward point.Wicketkeeper Foakes, like Curran, was playing his first BWT game after being released from England’s bio-secure Test bubble but Surrey were without fast bowler Morne Morkel, who picked up a niggle in the defeat against Hampshire at Arundel last week.Kent, without Joe Denly and Sam Billings – who have joined England’s white-ball squad – and Heino Kuhn, who is on paternity leave, have given a first-class debut to 20-year-old paceman Nathan Gilchrist, signed from Somerset earlier this summer, and who finished on 1 not out.

Diomande 2.0: Rangers chasing £2.5m signing who’d thrive with Igamane

da bet esporte: Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement is facing a big week in his tenure at Ibrox with two big matches to come in the Europa League and the League Cup.

da aposte e ganhe: Firstly, the Light Blues play host to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur at Ibrox in the Europa League on Thursday night, which will provide the team with a tough test, against the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, and Heung-min Son.

The Scottish giants will then have to quickly turn their attention to Hampden Park for the League Cup final clash with Celtic on Sunday, as Clement and Rangers look to retain the title.

A 1-0 win over Aberdeen, thanks to a goal from captain James Tavernier, secured the trophy for the Belgian head coach early on in his time in charge of the Light Blues.

He will be hoping for a similar performance and result to ease some of the pressure over his future at the club, after Football Insider reported last month that the board were prepared to give him the chance to win the competition before making a decision.

Irrespective of what happens on Sunday, though, Clement could convince the board to give him the January transfer window to turn things around, amid links to potential new signings.

Rangers have interest in Croatian wizard

According to RangersNews, the Light Blues are interested in a swoop to sign NK Osijek central midfielder Marko Soldo ahead of the second half of the season.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The report claims that the Gers have a serious interest in the Croatia U21 international and have been scouting his performances this season.

It states that they have sent scouts to watch him in action multiple times and that they are continuing to do their due diligence on the exciting youngster, ahead of a possible swoop for his services next month.

The outlet adds that a deal could be done for a fee of up to €3m (£2.5m) and this means that the 21-year-old whiz could arrive for a relatively modest fee, which would make him a low-risk signing.

However, the report does not reveal whether or not technical director Nils Koppen is prepared to sanction a £2.5m bid for his services at this moment in time, as the club may want to do more scouting work to decide if he is the right fit for the team.

Signing a player from the 5th-placed team in Croatia may seem slightly rogue but Rangers did dip into the Danish market in the last January transfer window to sign Mohamed Diomande, who has proven to be a very solid addition to the squad.

Mohamed Diomande's time with Rangers so far

The central midfielder joined from Danish side FC Nordsjælland, who ended up finishing fourth in the Superliga, on loan until the end of the 2023/24 campaign to bolster Clement’s options in the middle of the park.

Despite only being 22 and it being his first experience of Scottish football, Diomande hit the ground running and caught the eye with his impressive performances in the Premiership.

The left-footed dynamo started 11 of his 13 appearances in the league in the second half of the season and contributed with two goals and 1.5 key passes per game offensively.

Mohamed Diomande

Diomande also made 2.3 tackles and interceptions per game and won 52% of his duels in the Premiership, which means that he offered quality creatively and out of possession by holding his own in physical battles to win the ball back for his side.

His form convinced the club to sign him permanently for a fee of at least £4.3m in the summer and the Ivorian gem has already made 23 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

As you can see in the table above, Diomande has been a solid operator in Europe for Rangers this term, offering quality at both ends of the pitch, with goals, assists, recoveries, tackles, and interceptions, whilst holding his own in duels.

Rangers could, now, repeat the blinder they played in signing Diomande from a relatively obscure league, in comparison to domestic or major European league signings, by bringing in Soldo, who could be a dream for in-form forward Hamza Igamane.

Why Soldo would be a dream for Igamane

Firstly, the Moroccan Rangers star has emerged as a key player in the Gers squad in recent weeks with his impressive performances in multiple positions.

Igamane has produced four goals and one assist in his last four appearances in all competitions, whilst being deployed as a centre-forward and as a left winger.

Along with his four goals, the young gem created eight chances and two ‘big chances’ for his teammates in those four games, which shows that he can offer quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals.

Soldo is often deployed as a defensive or central midfielder for Osijek but his contributions in possession suggest that he could help Igamane to thrive.

The Croatian gem, whom writer Kai Watson claimed has started the season “brilliantly”, has the quality on the ball to make things happen as both a scorer and a creator.

As you can see in the table above, Soldo has created six ‘big chances’ in 11 starts in the league so far this season, to go along with his defensive and goalscoring contributions.

Meanwhile, James Tavernier (seven) is the only Rangers player who has created more than four ‘big chances’ in the Premiership for Clement.

This suggests that the £2.5m-rated star could come in to be the most creative midfield player in the squad, if he can translate his form over to Scottish football, and that is why he could thrive with Igamane, who could benefit from that creativity to increase his goal output.

ByDan Emery Dec 10, 2024

Soldo’s defensive and offensive contributions show that he is a well-rounded midfielder and, at the age of 21, he still has plenty of time to hone his skills and develop further, which is why he could be a fantastic addition to the group next month.

West Indies slump to record T20I low as England complete 5-0 sweep

Hosts collapse for just 43, their lowest T20I total, after opting to bat first

West Indies slumped to their lowest total in women’s T20Is as England completed a 5-0 whitewash over them in the five-T20I series with an eight-wicket win in Bridgetown.England only took 16.2 overs to bowl West Indies out, with Freya Davies and Alice Davidson-Richards taking three wickets apiece while Charlie Dean chipped in with two. In response, England reached the 44 target in quick time, wrapping up the game inside the powerplay, in 5.3 overs.West Indies chose to bat in search of a maiden win in the five-match series, but after an uneventful first over, they lost wickets in each of the next three overs, and one more inside the powerplay. Davies made breakthroughs with the dismissals of Hayley Matthews and Rashada Williams, while Nat Sciver and Issy Wong accounted for Aaliyah Alleyne and Shabika Gajnabi respectively. Dean then removed middle-order batters Trishan Holder and Kyshona Knight just after the powerplay. At that stage, West Indies were 24 for 6 in 9.1 overs, and that would soon be 30 for 8 when Davidson-Richards picked off both Afy Fletcher and Djenaba Joseph (11) – the top-scorer for West Indies with 11 – in the same over. Davidson-Richards and Davies then cleaned up the tail to return combined figures of 6 for 7.The England chase began with a 22-run partnership between Danni Wyatt and Sophia Dunkley. Dunkley, and Wyatt later, fell, but Sciver finished the game off with a flourish, hitting three fours in her 12-ball 20 not out.Davies was named Player of the Match for her 14-ball spell that had 12 dots, one maiden over, and three wickets for only two runs.

Chelsea must sell £150k-p/w ace who Granovskaia was "excited” to sign

da pinnacle: In the 2018/19 season, Chelsea spent €208.80m (£172.4m) making three huge permanent signings for Maurizio Sarri, alongside two loan deals for Mateo Kovacic and Gonzalo Higuain.

da fazobetai: During this season, the Blues finished third in the Premier League and won the UEFA Europa League, beating Arsenal 4-1 in Baku. Jorginho was seen as the most important of these signings, as he played a key role for Sarri at Napoli, and was looking to translate that system to the Premier League, bringing the Italian midfielder with him.

But the most expensive signing made that summer, has caused controversy from the very beginning, from a moment where he refused to be subbed off, to the present, where he clearly isn’t worth the wages he’s earning for the club.

Chelsea's costly transfer mistake

Chelsea signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Athletic Bilbao for a fee of around £71.6m, arrived to replace Thibaut Courtois, who joined Real Madrid for around £35m in the same summer window.

Speaking at the time, Blues director Marina Granovskaia outlined her excitement at the capture of the 23-year-old, stating:

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

The former Bilbao man made 160 appearances for the club, keeping 59 clean sheets, conceding 175 goals and totalling 14,523 minutes played, yet has largely failed to convince over the past six years or so.

The Spanish keeper was often criticised for his form at Chelsea, with pundit Ian Wright notably stating back in 2023 that he simply “makes too many mistakes”. Indeed, the 2020/21 campaign, for instance, saw him lead the way in the division among his fellow ‘keepers, with regard to errors leading to goals (three).

The 30-year-old is earning £150k-per-week at Chelsea, but is currently out on loan with Bournemouth this season, with the Cherries paying half of his wages (£75k).

But when he returns to the club next season, Kepa will have one year left on his deal, taking him to June 2026.

Whilst Chelsea’s goalkeeper position is far from secure, the club will want to move Kepa’s high wages on, keeping their current selection of shotstoppers on more reasonable wages, and potentially looking to acquire a new number one when the time is right.

How Kepa compares to Chelsea's current goalkeepers

Robert Sanchez was signed from Brighton in 2023, joining the club for a fee of around £25m. Since joining, the 27-year-old has made 36 appearances in all competitions, conceding 48 goals, keeping eight clean sheets and totalling 3,234 minutes played.

Chelsea also made another signing in this department during the summer, acquiring Filip Jorgensen from Villarreal for a fee of around £20.7m. The 22-year-old has made ten appearances for the Blues so far, conceding just nine goals, keeping four clean sheets and totalling 900 minutes played.

When comparing the three goalkeepers’ performances this season, Kepa has the worst save percentage despite conceding the most shots against him, has conceded the most goals per 90, and has made the fewest passes (mainly down to Bournemouth’s direct playstyle).

The two current Chelsea options have performed better, making more saves despite facing fewer shots, conceding fewer goals per 90, making more passes per 90 and stopping more crosses/commanding their area better.

Robert Sanchez for Chelsea.

Considering both Sanchez and Jorgensen are performing better and are on lower wages – earning £60k-per-week and £50k-per-week, respectively – Chelsea should certainly look to move the Granovskaia signing on at the end of the season, whether that is to Bournemouth on a permanent deal or elsewhere.

Adelaide Strikers believe Stoinis should have been timed out

In the BBL a new batter must be ready to face up within 75 seconds of a wicket falling

AAP01-Jan-2023

Marcus Stoinis lit up Adelaide Oval•Getty Images

Adelaide Strikers overseas player Adam Hose believes Marcus Stoinis was too slow to face the first delivery of his matchwinning knock and the 75-second timed out rule should have been enforced.Stoinis blasted his way back to form on New Year’s Eve, crunching 74 off 35 deliveries in the Melbourne Stars’ eight-run win at Adelaide Oval. But according to Hose, Stoinis could have been sent packing first ball had the umpires upheld the Strikers’ appeal. The rule states that at the fall of a wicket, the incoming batter must be ready to face within 75 seconds. If the batter fails to arrive in time, they must stand to the side of the pitch for the first delivery of their innings and allow the bowler – in this case Wes Agar – a free ball at the stumps. If the ball strikes the wicket, the batter is out bowled.Related

Davies and Hales power resurgent Sydney Thunder to big win

Stoinis returns to form with 35-ball 74 as Stars secure thrilling win

“To be honest, I was at cover for his first ball and I’m pretty certain he timed out – 75 seconds, he wasn’t ready,” Hose said. “I just hope that if it is the rule then we can play by it. That’s my only experience of the clock being run out.”We asked the question, we appealed, but nothing happened. I’m pretty certain his time was up.”Eleven days earlier, against Sydney Thunder, Hose, the incoming batter, was still scratching his guard and gardening when batting partner Matt Short yelled “Hosie, face up” as the 75-second countdown almost expired.”Umpires have been very hot on me the last couple of games getting to the crease,” Hose said. “I’ve been warned about it a few times and had to change my first-ball routine.”I guess that’s why my frustration came in, because they’ve been very hot on me. I just hope, moving forward into the rest of the tournament, if it’s going to be a rule then it has to be enforced.”Stoinis was aware of the ticking clock but rejected Hose’s claim, insisting Adelaide’s field was not set in time.”I checked centre [guard], then I was standing off because I could see the field moving,” he said. “I actually didn’t know that I had to stand there regardless.”Stoinis was also critical of the Strikers’ appeal for a timed out call against Hilton Cartwright in the 14th over.”The same thing happened with Hilts,” Stoinis said. “They [Strikers] appealed for that but the field was moving so it ended up being a dead ball. I wouldn’t appeal [for that]. The rule is in place if someone is trying to take advantage and slow the game down.”

Man Utd's future "£100m plus footballer" could steal the #8 from Fernandes

da aviator aposta: The last 12 months have been nothing short of a disaster for Manchester United, with the club falling way below the high standards it has set for itself in years prior.

da apostaganha: Ruben Amorim led the side to a measly 15th-place finish in 2024/25, with such a position their lowest since the Premier League’s formation way back in 1992.

Despite such a disappointing year last time around, the hierarchy maintained confidence in the 40-year-old to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford.

He was subsequently handed a £200m injection into the first-team squad by the board in an attempt to help transform the situation and catapult the side up the table.

However, one player who has so often produced the goods for the Red Devils has fallen way below his own high standards during the early stages of 2025/26.

Bruno Fernandes’ struggles in 2025/26 for United

Last season, Bruno Fernandes was undoubtedly United’s biggest threat within attacking areas, with his contributions saving the club in countless key moments.

The Portuguese international popped up with 37 combined goals and assists across all competitions, undoubtedly preventing the side from an even lower top-flight finish.

However, he was subject to interest from Saudi Arabia during the summer, but he rejected the eye-watering contract in favour of remaining in Manchester.

The 30-year-old has struggled to replicate such form in the last couple of weeks, with the club captain only registering two combined goals and assists in his first outings.

He’s also missed two spot kicks to date, one against Brentford and the other against Fulham – with both misses undoubtedly costing the Red Devils key points.

Amid the big spending in the final third, Fernandes has had to drop into a slightly deeper role, which will have no doubt restricted him from making the desired impact.

As a result, the 30-year-old could well find himself further down the pecking order in the years ahead, with one player potentially inheriting his current squad number.

The Man United player who could steal the #8 from Bruno

A new midfielder was on the agenda for United during the summer transfer window, but they struggled to identify the key fit needed to improve the squad.

Carlos Baleba was one player hugely touted with a switch to Old Trafford, but his £100m asking price saw the Red Devils withdraw from negotiations, subsequently unable to identify an alternative.

Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte are just two players who still remain as options at Amorim’s disposal, but are seen by many as players not good enough to take the side back up the table.

However, another option currently on their books is Kobbie Mainoo, but the Englishman has struggled to make a huge impact since Amorim was appointed last November.

The academy graduate managed just 20 starts in the Premier League last campaign, often being selected behind the aforementioned duo and Fernandes.

However, such a decision may come as a surprise, with the youngster enjoying a phenomenal 2023/24 season, scoring in the FA Cup final triumph against Manchester City in his breakthrough season. It was during that term that he was labelled as a future “£100m-plus footballer” by United writer Alex Turk

This campaign has been just as tricky for the midfielder, making five league appearances – all of which were off the bench, and only featuring for a total of 113 minutes.

The “incredible” star, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has previously managed to impress, even being compared to Declan Rice by FBref for his performances in the league last campaign.

He managed to outperform his compatriot in numerous key areas, further highlighting the talent he possesses when given the chance to star on a regular basis.

The Arsenal star cost a staggering £105m back in the summer of 2023, with such a fee being one of the highest in English history – but United could well have their own gem on their hands in Mainoo.

At just 20, he has bags of time to develop further and become a world-class talent, but he desperately needs the manager to put faith in him and give him the game time he needs.

With Bruno’s lack of impact as of late, the manager needs to give him an opportunity to stake his claim, with Mainoo having the tools to replace the Portuguese midfielder long term – subsequently taking his number in the process.
