INEOS must cash in on Man Utd flop who’s been worse than Rashford

da betsul: In the years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, Manchester United have spent lots of money on signings who have ultimately not worked out, for whatever reason. In total, the Red Devils are believed to have spent over £1.5b since their legendary manager left the dugout in 2013.

da supremo: Indeed, not every major singing United have made has been a complete failure. The best example is Bruno Fernandes, who is now the club’s captain. He has scored 79 goals and has registered 64 assists in just 239 games for the club, incredible output and superb value for money, considering they paid just £46.6m initially.

However, some signings have sadly not proven to work out in the end for both United and the player. Perhaps the best example of this is Romelu Lukaku, who signed for United in July 2017. The 42 goals he scored in 96 games for the club may not seem the worst at face value, but given the club spent £75m on the Belgian, the numbers certainly are frustrating.

However, there is one more recent signing who may end up proving to be worse value for money than others, considering the amount United spent on him, and the weekly wage he currently earns.

How much Man Utd have spent on Jadon Sancho

The player in question here is English attacker Jadon Sancho, who joined United with so much expectation that he would become a superstar. Sadly, it did not work out for the 24-year-old, and he is now back at Borussia Dortmund on loan, the club United paid £73m to for Sancho.

Despite being out on loan in Germany for the remainder of the season, Sancho is shockingly still one of the highest earners at United. According to Capology, he earns £190k-per-week, making him the club’s eighth-highest earner. Remarkably, that means he has earned the best part of £20m during his opening two years with the club. In short, it's been terrible business by the old regime.

One of the people who earns more than him is England teammate Marcus Rashford, whose £300k-per-week salary is fewer than just two players. Many United fans dreamed of seeing the duo tear things up on the pitch for the Red Devils, but, sadly, things did not work out that way.

Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho

In his 82 games for United, Sancho scored just 12 goals, and registered six assists. Unsurprisingly, given the fact he has played 399 games for the club, Rashford’s tally is much better; he has 131 goals and 64 assists in that time. However, he is having a tough season in 2023/24 and has just eight goals and five assists in all competitions so far. That tally still happens to be better than his fellow countryman who can boast only five goal involvements.

Surprisingly, the duo linked up for a goal just three times in 56 games for United together; at home to Southampton in 2021/22, away to Leicester in 2022/23 and away to Tottenham in the same season.

United could well look to move both Rashford and Sancho on this summer. According to James Ducker of The Telegraph, they are said to be considering moving Rashford on, although David Ornstein says they prefer to keep their number 10 at the club beyond this season. However, Sancho is still one player who could depart Old Trafford in search of pastures anew next season.

How Jadon Sancho could get his career back on track

Despite struggling during his time back in England, there is little doubt that Sancho is a quality player when in form. He has an unbelievably good record at Borussia Dortmund, across both spells at the club. In total, Sancho has 53 goals and 66 assists in 153 games.

During his current loan stint, the 24-year-old has had a decent time of it, registering three goals and two assists. He has also helped his side qualify for the Champions League semi-finals, where they face a showdown against Kylian Mbappe’s PSG.

The general consensus amongst onlookers when discussing Sancho’s profile and attributes is that, instead of playing out wide, he is far more suited as an interior, playing as an advanced eight or number 10, where he would thrive.

The main reason for this is Sancho’s lack of explosive speed, which all of the elite wingers in today’s game possess. Think Rashford, Kylian Mbappe or Vinicius Junior. In another era, Sancho may well have suited playing out wide, however, since the game has evolved, his profile certainly suits that of an interior player much more.

Despite the fact Sancho does not possess the explosive nature of a modern winger, he is still an exceptional ball carrier, something which stands out when watching him. According to Fbref, the 24-year-old averages 5.68 progressive carries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 7% of positionally similar players in Europe, and 2.65 carries into the penalty area per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 10%.

Jadon Sancho

He has a low centre of gravity and superb close control, meaning the ability to slalom in and out of defenders with nimble agility is a real feature of his game. Not only that, Sancho has bags of tricks, skills he honed by playing cage football in the streets of Kennington growing up. He is not afraid to show off those tricks in a professional game, bringing them out at times to help him get past a defender.

Not only is he a tricky dribbler, but Sancho is also a creative player who can craft out openings in the final third for teammates. In fact, he averages 2.38 passes into the penalty area per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 8% of wingers and attacking midfielders in Europe. He also averages 2.27 key passes per 90 minutes, ranking him in the 80th percentile overall.

Sancho is a player who is superb in combination play with a winger, full-back or midfielder. He is superb at playing in triangles to bypass opponents and shows his high levels of football IQ when playing in and around the penalty box, to work openings for him or a teammate.

jadon-sancho-premier-league-transfers-man-united

The main concern for the forward moving back into midfield is his ability out of possession. The 24-year-old is not the strongest of players, and can sometimes lose physical duels or challenges. However, his 5.3 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, which rank him in the top 15% of wingers and attacking midfielders, mean he is capable off the ball.

There is no doubt that, in the the right system, Sancho could thrive in a central area of the pitch, as an advanced eight or number 10. That said, due to his record in England, the Dortmund loanee simply has to be shown the exit door from OId Trafford by INEOS this summer.

He could still be a shrewd pick-up for a club looking to sign someone with his profile. The winger is a superb carrier, has good creative output and can score goals too. Even if it won't be in Manchester, there is no doubt Sancho still has a big future ahead.

MARCELO LOMBA SALVA E INTER AMPLIA

Além disso, a estrela do técnico Umberto Louzer brilhou.

Sam Curran bags three, but Grant Stewart and Harry Podmore stand firm for Kent

Curran’s release from England Test bubble tempered by visiting duo at The Oval

ECB Reporters Network22-Aug-2020

Sam Curran celebrates dismissing Ollie Robinson•Getty Images

Grant Stewart made 58 and Harry Podmore scored a fine 42-ball 47 from No. 8 as the pair added 73 for the seventh wicket and Kent reached a determined 295 for 8 after being put in by Surrey on the opening day of their Bob Willis Trophy fixture at the Kia Oval.Sam Curran returned from England Test duty to take 3 for 65 for Surrey but it was the lower-order partnership between Podmore and Stewart that ultimately edged the day Kent’s way after a battling performance. There were also half-century stands for the second and fifth wickets, respectively by Daniel Bell-Drummond and Jack Leaning and then by Marcus O’Riordan and Darren Stevens, to frustrate Surrey’s attack. At 99 for 4 in mid-afternoon, however, it looked like it would be Surrey’s day after Bell-Drummond fell for a fighting 111-ball 45 – leg-before to Adam Finch – and Ollie Robinson was also pinned in front for 17 by Curran. But O’Riordan, a contemporary of England’s new batting star Zak Crawley when they were both at Tonbridge School, reached 30 from 65 balls while veteran allrounder Stevens made 24, before edging Rikki Clarke to Ben Foakes behind the stumps, as the pair led a counter-attack with a stand of 55 in 13 overs. And then, after O’Riordan had thin-edged Curran to Foakes in the second over after tea, pushing at one angled across him from the left-arm seamer, Podmore arrived to play an excellent knock that included six fours and a big six sweetly struck into the new Peter May Stand construction site off Amar Virdi.Stewart also drove offspinner Virdi for a straight six and hit five fours in his 103-ball innings, before being eighth out in the day’s 87th over when he went down the pitch to Virdi, missed an attempted lofted drive and was bowled leg stump. The 22-year-old O’Riordan, just nine days older than Crawley, impressed in what is just his fifth first-class game. He has been getting his Kent chance in this abbreviated summer largely because of the absences of Crawley and other senior players, and despite his offspin being reportedly his strongest cricketing suit he has looked very comfortable taking various top-order batting roles in the past month. In his fourth Willis Trophy appearance, O’Riordan came in at 99 for 3 and resisted gamely, hitting five fours before departing at 170 for 6. The efforts of Podmore, Stewart and Matt Milnes, who finished on 22 not out after a handy 49-run stand with Stewart, then ensured that Kent were marginally the happier at stumps.Earlier Kent had fought hard to get to 56 for 1 by lunch, with Bell-Drummond joined by Leaning in a partnership of 58 in 25 overs after Jordan Cox had gone in the ninth over, leg-before to a Matt Dunn yorker.Leaning eventually went for 21, chipping Curran to mid on off a leading edge in the sixth over after lunch, and just before his dismissal by Finch, acting captain Bell-Drummond was hit on the shoulder by the impressive 20-year-old paceman, making his second Surrey appearance on loan from Worcestershire.Finch, though, then had to wait until deep into the final session to get his second scalp, that of Podmore who carved to backward point.Wicketkeeper Foakes, like Curran, was playing his first BWT game after being released from England’s bio-secure Test bubble but Surrey were without fast bowler Morne Morkel, who picked up a niggle in the defeat against Hampshire at Arundel last week.Kent, without Joe Denly and Sam Billings – who have joined England’s white-ball squad – and Heino Kuhn, who is on paternity leave, have given a first-class debut to 20-year-old paceman Nathan Gilchrist, signed from Somerset earlier this summer, and who finished on 1 not out.

Ratcliffe keen: Man Utd’s interest in “monster” is “increasingly insistent”

da esport bet: Manchester United's interest in signing a defensive "monster" in the summer transfer window is becoming "increasingly insistent", according to journalist Rudy Galetti.

Busy summer ahead of Man Utd

da betsul: The Sir Jim Ratcliffe era has got off to a promising start at Old Trafford, with United's new part-owner making big changes behind the scenes. The hope is that the Red Devils will embark on one of their best transfer windows in years this summer, helped by the likely appointment of Dan Ashworth.

There are various areas of the pitch that need to be improved upon, and one of those is centre-back, with the likes of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans not representing the future. For that reason, Nottingham Forest ace Murillo has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, having enjoyed an impressive season at the City Ground. He has started 27 games in the Premier League, averaging 5.7 clearances per match.

In an attacking sense, Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise is reportedly wanted by United, being seen as a noticeable upgrade on Antony, who has continually not offered enough product during his time at the club, scoring just twice all season in all competitions.

Rasmus Hojlund may be a hugely promising young striker, but more competition for him could be needed moving forward, and Sporting CP ace Viktor Gyokeres is seen as an option. The Swede is enjoying a fantastic season, scoring 22 times in 28 appearances in the Primeira Liga.

Man Utd want to sign defensive "monster"

Taking to X, Galetti claimed that United are in the mix to sign Juventus defender Gleison Bremer this summer, with a replacement already being looked at by his current club:

"Hermoso will leave Atleti in June as a free agent, no doubt. Juventus are monitoring him as a possible replacement of Bremer, on whom the #ManUTD's interest is becoming increasingly insistent. Inter, Aston Villa and other English clubs have Mario on the CB's list."

Juventus' Gleison Bremer

Bremer is exactly the kind of player who United could do with next season, coming in as a dominant figure who is both experienced and young enough to be a key figure for four or five years at Old Trafford. The 27-year-old has shone at the heart of Juve's defence this term, winning 2.9 aerial duels per game across 32 Serie A appearances, not to mention 4.2 clearances per match.

He could be viewed as a great partner for Lisandro Martinez moving forward, with the Argentine the only current United centre-back who genuinely feels like a key part of the club's future. Analyst Ben Mattinson has described the Juve man as a "monster" due to his expertise at the back, and he could see the Red Devils as an enticing proposition.

£68m striker who turned Ten Hag down twice open to future Man Utd move

Could it be third time lucky for the Dutch manager?

ByBen Browning Apr 20, 2024

Perhaps the biggest negative could be the fact that United look like they won't be playing Champions League football next season, but they remain a huge club that can offer big wages and the prospect of a successful future.

Leicestershire to resume training on Wednesday despite second lockdown in Leicester

Foxes players to come off furlough as planned with a view to being fit for county season on August 1

Leicestershire’s players are to resume training on Wednesday despite a second lockdown in the city of Leicester. While most of the UK is slowly beginning to enjoy greater freedom, Leicester’s period in lockdown has been extended by at least two-weeks after a surge of Covid-19 cases in the area. Health Secretary Matt Hancock told the BBC the city had seen “10 percent of all positive cases in the country over the past week”.But despite the fact that Leicestershire’s Grace Road ground is within that lockdown area, the club’s players will come off furlough on Wednesday with a view to being fit to resume playing county cricket on August 1.ALSO READ: County season from August 1, but formats to be decided”It’s an incredibly challenging situation,” Sean Jarvis, who started his role as the club’s new CEO on June 24, told ESPNcricinfo. “We are clarifying things with both the city and county councils but our understanding right now is we are permitted to train from July 1 and we will be in a position to resume playing on August 1. We’re proceeding as if it’s business as close to normal as we can.”With a chance that Leicestershire will not be able to use their home ground, the club are currently exploring options elsewhere. The most likely alternative venue is Kibworth Cricket Club, which has previously hosted women’s ODIs, though Oakham and Uppingham will also be considered. While Jarvis said Leicestershire would be happy to “go with the consensus” when the counties decide on which formats to play in the truncanted season, their own preference is for white-ball cricket.”In terms of expense and logistics, we would probably prefer a 50-over competition to start the season followed by a T20 Blast,” Jarvis said. “That way we could minimise hotels stays. But if the consensus is we start the season with a first-class competition, we are prepared for that, too.”Either way, Leicestershire will be keen to welcome spectators to their Grace Road home if T20 cricket resumes, as planned, at the end of August. The club has significant financial issues and would welcome the cash-flow such ticket sales could generate.

Tottenham ready to seal potential "bargain" transfer for Ange this summer

da bet7: Tottenham are apparently ready to seal a potential "bargain" deal for Ange Postecoglou this summer, and it involves a player who boasts 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions this season.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 10, 2024

For Postecoglou, it is very much about the long-term project, and the Lilywhites boss has stated on multiple occasions that the race for fourth spot isn't a top priority for him.

"It's a sign of progress," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's top-four hopes.

"We didn't do that last year, but it's not the end goal, and it doesn't ensure you or help you the following year. You look at Man Utd, Newcastle, they're in the Champions League – it doesn't guarantee you anything the following year, just because you make it, that it elevates you.

"The challenge is to keep growing, and that's why I say about it's not just about being a top-four team, it's about trying to win things, be successful, be No 1, and part of that process is to get up to that level, keep going but then keep going."

For supporters who have gone 16 years without seeing Tottenham win a major piece of silverware, with their last one being a Carling Cup triumph against Chelsea in 2008, this will be music to their ears.

However, to reach that very next level, Postecoglou will need the backing of chairman Daniel Levy – which looks very likely to be the case.

According to reports, Spurs will look to bring in a new central midfielder when the window reopens, as faithful servant Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could depart N17.

Hojbjerg, while very reliable and can put in a great performance, isn't exactly tailor-made for Postecoglou's system – hence the links to potential upgrades.

Tottenham on "high alert" and "ready to seal" Dewsbury-Hall deal

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has an update on this for Football Insider, involving Leicester City star Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

The Foxes midfielder has bagged a brilliant 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions across 23/24, which has proved crucial for Leicester in their bid to climb back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

As per O'Rourke, Tottenham are "ready to seal" a potential "bargain" deal for Dewsbury-Hall – who is apparently very likely to depart if Enzo Maresca's side fail to secure promotion.

Indeed, Spurs chiefs are said to be on "high alert" over the 25-year-old's possible availability, alongside both Brighton and Brentford.

Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom has conceded that there is a “high risk” that home series against New Zealand and Pakistan this summer will fall victim to the coronavirus pandemic. The start of the Irish season has already been pushed back to the end of May, meaning that Bangladesh’s scheduled tour for three ODIs and four T20Is has been postponed, and with international travel severely limited as things stand, it is possible that Ireland will not play a single home fixture this summer.New Zealand are due to play three ODIs and three T20Is from June 19, while Pakistan are scheduled to play two T20Is in July in between series in the Netherlands and England.”We’re all going to have to take a pragmatic approach – we just don’t know what’s going to happen even if sport does get back up and running in June,” Deutrom said. “With regards to international cricket, we remain in a wait-and-see holding pattern. Clearly, there is a high risk that our men’s home series against New Zealand and Pakistan… may be postponed if government restrictions remain in place.”Of course, some of the challenge we face in trying to bring some degree of certainty are no different to any other sport with international opposition – for example attaining visas for visiting teams and their support staff may not be possible as the Department of Foreign Affairs and the UK Foreign Office are currently not processing visa applications.”In addition, each country will take the advice of their home government, so teams may not even be in a position to travel to Europe. More specific to our situation, both New Zealand and Pakistan are visiting multiple countries on their tours, so that adds an extra layer of complexity. Then there are more logistical issues such as hotel and international flight bookings, the movement and staffing of broadcast facilities, and complying with the restrictions that may still exist around large group gatherings.”Two weeks ago, NZC chief executive David White indicated that the tour to Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands and the Caribbean was “most unlikely”, while PCB chairman Ehsan Mani told the board’s podcast this week that “preparation for the tour might become an issue if this keeps going the way it is.””It will also depend to a large degree on what the situation is like in England and Ireland,” Mani said. “If those series are disrupted, it will have a lot of impact. [The national boards] will also obviously have a huge financial impact. To reschedule those [tours] to fit into a future FTP will become a big challenge.”Irish cricket faces a further obstacle in that it has no permanent stadium, and relies heavily on temporary infrastructure at home fixtures. “Not only does this extend our lead-times for series preparation,” Deutrom said, “but also – at this time of crisis – we are aware that there is a shortage of temporary or portable infrastructure on the market as most is understandably in use by [Irish and Northern Irish health services].”The groundsman at Malahide – the ground near Dublin due to host both fixtures against Pakistan – has been temporarily repatriated to England by the local club, and Deutrom has previously indicated Cricket Ireland would monitor its readiness to host international cricket once restrictions are lifted.Deutrom also confirmed that the board has taken measures to preserve jobs and “to buffer the organisation through at least the next two months” with revenue shortfalls expected through loss of broadcast and sponsorship revenue. All non-playing staff have taken a 20% wage cut for April and May, while Deutrom himself will take a 25% cut for the rest of the calendar year.Centrally-contracted players have not been asked to take a cut on their retainer, on account of the losses already incurred due to the absence of match fees. “To ask them to take a further cut to their base remuneration… would be unreasonable,” Deutrom said.It remains to be seen how well-equipped Cricket Ireland is to deal with the crisis financially, with the annual report for 2019 due to be published within the next few weeks. The board’s 2018 accounts showed that cash reserves had been depleted to just €13,470 (14,700 USD approx), with the achievement of Test status leading to vastly increased costs, while Mani has warned that many boards will “feel the pinch” of the crisis, not least if the T20 World Cup is postponed.
