Miller and Hardik muscle Titans into the IPL final

Jos Buttler’s 89 off 56 in vain but Royals will have a second shot at the title in Qualifier 2

Manjrekar: ‘Chahal bowled the tough overs, but Ashwin was slightly disappointing’

A man who wasn’t snapped up until the fag end of an exhaustive two-day auction was front and centre of Gujarat Titans’ dream run into the IPL final, which will be played at their home ground in front of possibly 100,000 fans in Ahmedabad.David Miller, enjoying his best IPL returns since 2013, channeled the spirit of Carlos Brathwaite by going 6, 6, 6 in a sensational final-over take down of Prasidh Krishna as Titans made no fuss in polishing off the 16 runs they needed off the final over. Miller remained unbeaten on 68 off 38, and his partnership of 106 with Hardik Pandya, who made a subdued unbeaten 40, ensured Titans were always ahead of a chase of 189. They eventually got home with three balls to spare and with seven wickets in hand.Buttler starts, Samson sustainsJos Buttler laced three boundaries off Mohammed Shami early on to give Royals the push they needed to overcome the early loss of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Samson then came out and batted like a man possessed, standing upright and striking the ball on the up. Clearing his front leg and swinging through cleanly, he hit three fours and two sixes off his first 10 deliveries. His first non-boundary run came in the seventh over. It told you of his intent to give his team the extra runs they may have needed to deal with the dew that was expected later in the evening. Samson raced to 30 off 13 as Royals made 55 for 1 in the first six overs. The slowdownButtler slowed down, initially because Samson took on the aggressor’s role. Then Rashid Khan, who had a favourable match-up against Englishman – four dismissals, strike rate of 60 – had him all at sea with his bag of ripping googlies and legbreaks. Having bowled three overs on the trot for 12, Rashid paved the way for R Sai Kishore to remove Samson to further dent the Royals. Rashid finished with an economy rate of 3.75, mostly because of his genius, but also because the opposition only had six specialist batters and they couldn’t afford to take too many risks.2:41

Manjrekar sees shade of Dhoni in Buttler’s innings progression

The finishFrom the end of the third over to the start of the 15th, Buttler failed to hit a single boundary. And then they came in torrents. He hit left-arm seamer Yash Dayal for four fours in the 17th. The second of those, with Buttler on 43, would’ve been straight down Hardik’s throat at long-off had he not slipped. Two balls later, he raised a fifty off 42 balls. It wasn’t until the 19th over that he hit his first six, and it was quite a hit as he cleared his front leg and walloped Shami way over long-off. The last five overs went for 64, Buttler alone hitting 52.Titans rocked earlyThe Titans lost powerplay maverick Wriddhiman Saha for a duck when he nicked Trent Boult in the first over, but quickly recovered with Shubman Gill and Matthew Wade’s calculated assault. Gill triggered a surge when he took on R Ashwin in the last over of the powerplay. He began with a six over extra cover, before flicking him for two more boundaries as Titans ended the first six on 64 for 1, their highest powerplay score of the season. Gill looked peerless until his innings ended courtesy a mix-up with Wade as he tried to keep strike. Wade, who initially turned for a second, froze to leave Gill stranded. To make matters worse, Wade also fell two overs later as Titans were 85 for 3 in the 10th over.Miller, Hardik see Titans homeMiller and Hardik took calculated risks and peeled off risk-free runs including a 14-run final over from Ashwin that consigned him to 4-0-40-0, his worst figures this season. Titans needed 50 off the last five, but weren’t allowed to break free as Chahal and Obed McCoy kept things tight. McCoy was especially effective with his bag of slower deliveries, and Chahal varied his pace and lengths to bowl a tight 18th that left Titans needing 23 off 12. Miller’s ability to pick boundaries covered up for Hardik’s struggles on what Samson described as a “sticky wicket”. McCoy’s tight 19th that went for just one four meant Royals had the cushion of 16 in the final over. But Miller had other ideas. He went 6,6,6 to give Titans a ticket to their dream finale.

Ahmadzai: Afghanistan will 'control pressure and emotions' only by playing top teams regularly

“Playing one or two matches against India and Pakistan in top-level tournaments is not enough,” assistant coach says

Shashank Kishore09-Sep-20223:00

Raees Ahmadzai: Panic set in after the last match

Raees Ahmadzai, Afghanistan’s assistant coach, has implored the ICC and the Full Members to play them more often to help develop quality, improve game sense, and learn how to close out matches under pressure.”It’s important for a team like us to play against top-level teams,” Ahmadzai said after Afghanistan’s 101-run loss in their final Super 4s Asia Cup fixture against India on Thursday. “It’s not easy. I can’t remember when we last played India or Pakistan. Playing one or two matches against them in top-level tournaments is not enough. It will help if we play them more often.Related

Unshackled Kohli brings the joy factor back to his batting

“Only then can our players learn to control their emotions, control pressure and learn from [the experience]. I feel we deserve that. The way we started in the Asia Cup, giving a tough time to the other teams, I think we did well. Our win over Sri Lanka was a one-sided win, we beat Bangladesh. But we have to improve on the basics. Our players realise where we should be more focused so that we can finish the way we started.”Since 2021, Afghanistan have only played Ireland, Netherlands, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in bilateral series. Their maiden tour to Australia, which was first postponed because of Covid-19 in 2020, was called off late last year.Their last opportunities against other Full Members prior to the Asia Cup were at the 2019 World Cup in England, where they came within touching distance of beating India and were well in control before slipping under pressure against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. At the Asia Cup Super 4s, after running Sri Lanka and Pakistan close, they unravelled quite spectacularly against India. Afghanistan reprieved Virat Kohli early and then saw him blast his first T20I century, which also helped break his long drought without an international hundred. India posted 212 for 2, and it was game over for Afghanistan six overs into their chase when they slipped to 20 for 5.Afghanistan had a tough schedule, having to turn up for the India game less than 24 hours after losing to Pakistan in an emotionally and physically sapping contest. Ahmadzai revealed the team had been “sleepless” following the Pakistan loss, because of how much it took out of them mentally, having lost a game they believed was theirs.Defending 130 on a ground with small dimensions, Pakistan had been reduced to 118 for 9 with seven balls left. Then Naseem Shah walloped two sixes off full tosses from fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi to finish the game.”To be honest, everyone panicked in that situation [when Pakistan were nine down],” Ahmadzai revealed. “But then we played back-to-back games, and we tried our best. The way we looked at the wicket, I thought we could restrict India to 170 or 180. But if you drop a catch of a good player like Kohli, he won’t give you too many opportunities.”Afghanistan can look back on some fine individual performances. They proved there was more to their attack than just their spin superstars Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Their young fast-bowling unit, led by Farooqi, Naveen-ul-Haq and Fareed Ahmad, showed there was potential to work with.Afghanistan had to turn up for the India game less than 24 hours after their game against Pakistan ended•AFP/Getty Images

In the batting department, Najibullah Zadran smashed an unbeaten 17-ball 43 to help beat Bangladesh, while Rahmanullah Gurbaz impressed when he top-scored with 84 in their first Super 4s fixture against Sri Lanka. Ibrahim Zadran made scores of 42*, 40, 35 and 64*, showing the kind of consistency their batting has often lacked. For Ahmadzai, these were areas of encouragement as they build towards the T20 World Cup in Australia. “I think we did very well, especially our young boys,” he said. “We learnt a lot from our first two wins. Then the way we defended 130 against Pakistan was a good learning process for our players ahead of the World Cup.”If you’re playing against the big names, the big stars, you always get to learn a lot. We saw how Kohli or KL Rahul batted. During the tournament we spent some time with the Pakistani and Sri Lankan players also. It was a good experience, something our players can learn [from] and apply at the World Cup.”Overall, the biggest positive was the way we started this tournament with two wins. The way we beat Bangladesh, the way we gave a tough time to Pakistan. I’m happy to see our youngsters going a great job. These are things we will carry forward.”

Nafay-Talat stand, Al Islam's thrilling cameo take Chittagong to final

Chittagong were all but out but fought back in a see-sawing contest

Mohammad Isam05-Feb-2025

Chittagong Kings celebrate a thrilling win that sealed their spot in the final of BPL 2025•Chittagong Kings

Al Islam’s last-ball four, that too a classic cover drive, took Chittagong Kings to the BPL final. In an absolute see-saw battle, Aliss came back after injuring himself earlier in the last over, to hit the winning boundary and beat Khulna Tigers by two wickets in the second qualifier.Islam was unbeaten on 17 off seven balls, with two fours and a six, to take the Chittagong franchise into their second BPL final. They will face defending champions, and favourites, Fortune Barishal at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Friday.Chasing Khulna’s 163 for 6, Chittagong were all but out of the contest before Aliss got them back with his surprise cameo. Earlier, Khulna were powered by Shimron Hetmyer’s 63 to reach 163 for 6 in 20 overs. They went at less than six runs an over for the first 16 overs.Aliss the KingChittagong’s batting order, that lacked depth, was left exposed when tail-ender Khaled Ahmed walked in to bat at No 7. They slipped from 105 for 2 to 130 for 7 between overs 13 and 17. Arafat Sunny and Aliss then added 26 runs, with both hitting a couple of boundaries each. When Aliss slipped in the last over, he hurt his ankle. Shoriful Islam walked in, inside edged a boundary. But he fell next ball, and Chittagong’s players put on Aliss’ pads for him and he walked out again. He smashed Musfik Hasan for a boundary and sparked huge celebrations.Nafay powers ChittagongChittagong lost two of their big-hitters early in the chase. Parvez Hossain Emon holed out to mid-on before Graham Clark, smarting from a blow to the nose while fielding, missing a straight one from Hasan Mahmud. Khawaja Nafay though kept the run rate at a fair clip with this combination of quick singles and no-look clips on the leg side. He added 70 runs for the third wicket with Hussain Talat, fresh off his great form in the Champions T20 Cup (Pakistan’s domestic T20 competition) recently. The Pakistani pair relied a lot on rotating the strike but just when the boundaries dried up, Talat struck the big ones. He made 40 off 25 balls with five fours and a six, while Nafay reached his second half-century for the season, as Chittagong looked to be sailing smoothly.Nasum double sparks a collapseTalat swung Nasum towards the deep-square-leg boundary in the 13th over, only to be caught in the boundary. It sparked a collapse as Shamim Hossain also top edged Nasum in his next over, before Musfik accounted for Nafay. The set batter couldn’t get going after reaching his fifty, missing on a lap shot against the fast bowler. He removed Khaled later in the over, before the Chittagong captain Mohammad Mithun top edged Hasan Mahmud in the 17th over.Chittagong apply the squeezeEarlier in the evening, Khulna didn’t get going with the bat for a long time. They lost captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the third over when Binura Fernando got one to scissor through him. Islam then had Alex Ross caught and bowled in the following over, before Khaled Ahmed, Chittagong’s best bowler, removed Mohammad Naim, Khulna’s best batter, for 19.Afif Hossain also couldn’t resuscitate Khulna, making just 8 off 14 balls, before holing out in the deep in the ninth over. Chittagong applied the squeeze and then some, keeping Khulna from hitting boundaries for more than six overs. Aliss completed his four overs during this period, going for just 14 runs. Hetmyer, at the crease, didn’t help matters, as they meandered to 92 for four at the end of the 16th over.Hetmyer does his thingWith their backs to their wall, Khulna really needed a boost at this stage of their innings. Mahidul Islam Ankon, who had hit the two sixes in the innings thus far, slammed Khaled before Hetmyer got two sixes to take 23 off the 17th over. Shoriful removed Mahidul first ball next over, but Hetmyer still found two fours in the over. Fernando, who had given away just six runs in his first three overs, then came into Hetmyer’s crosshairs. The left-hander struck him for two fours and two sixes in his first four balls, before falling off the last ball. Hetmyer had arrived for Khulna just before the eliminator match against Rangpur, having just played in the ILT20.Mohammad Nawaz and Jason Holder cobbled together 17 runs in the final over, to give Khulna the much-needed boost. They made 71 off the last four overs to finish on 163 for 6, but it wasn’t enough.

"Wonderful" Newcastle ace hit with immediate international injury concern

da roleta: Reliable journalist Craig Hope has claimed that a “wonderful” Newcastle United player could now miss the entire international break after picking up an injury.

Newcastle pick up huge win at Nottingham Forest

da dobrowin: The Magpies secured arguably their most important Premier League win of the season so far on Sunday afternoon due to the resilience on show, coming from behind to win 3-1 away to an in-form Nottingham Forest side.

There were plenty who understandably felt that Forest would prevail, considering they sat third in the table going into the weekend action, but Newcastle’s quality shone through, with Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes all scoring in the second half at the City Ground.

There are definite signs that the Magpies’ season is beginning to catch light, following some indifferent results and performances earlier in the campaign, especially having also beaten Arsenal 1-0 at St James’ Park in their previous league outing.

Newcastle are now up into eighth place in the Premier League and just one point adrift of the Champions League places, with belief growing that they could make a return to Europe’s top club competition after a couple of seasons away from it. Eddie Howe isn’t short of injury problems at the moment, however, and a new update has emerged on the fitness of one key player.

"Wonderful" Newcastle player an injury doubt

According to Hope on X, Newcastle star Anthony Gordon could now miss international duty with England over the next few weeks, having suffered a hip injury in the win over Forest.

This will immediately concern some Magpies supporters, seeing as the £60,000-a-week Gordon has grown into a vital attacking figure since arriving from Everton, being lauded by Troy Deeney recently.

“Newcastle are a better team when he is involved. He got an assist for Alexander Isak’s winner against Arsenal, but the way he drives with the ball and carries the team forward means he’s always a threat. He can be on the right, left or the middle – he’s just a wonderful football player for Newcastle and England. Getting injured and then missing a penalty against Everton could have knocked his confidence but didn’t.”

From a Newcastle perspective, the hope is that the club are simply being cautious with Gordon, potentially removing him from England action in order not to risk him. It does feel like an international break where players from many clubs will be withdrawn, even though they could probably still be deemed fit enough to go and represent their respective countries.

While some may not like the idea of clubs behaving in that way, the importance of keeping players fresh for club duties is huge, so if Gordon has any kind of issue, he shouldn’t be going anywhere near the Three Lions setup.

Better than Isak: 8/10 Newcastle star just dropped a "monumental" display

This man who won 10 duels was even better than Isak for Newcastle against Forest

ByConnor Holden Nov 10, 2024

The 23-year-old may still be waiting for his season to fully ignite, with only two goals coming his way in the Premier League, but his inch-perfect assist for Isak’s winner against Arsenal summed up his ability.

Adam Rossington, Dan Worrall share first-day honours as Surrey trail Essex by 247

Simon Harmer’s 50 another fine effort as Essex rally after Worrall’s 3 for 0 in five balls

Adam Rossington and Dan Worrall were the first-day heroes at the Kia Oval, with No. 7 Rossington scoring an extraordinary 100 and Worrall bowling brilliantly to take 6 for 56 as Surrey and Essex traded fierce blows in blistering conditions.Rossington rushed to his century with an exhilarating assault on the second new ball, in Essex’s 271 all out, clubbing Kemar Roach for three leg-side sixes before wearily skying the same bowler to long on in the 83rd over.Simon Harmer’s 50 was another fine effort as Essex rallied hard after Worrall had earlier taken 3 for 0 in five balls as the LV= Insurance County Championship leaders initially reduced their opponents to 91 for 6 by lunch. In 9.1 overs’ batting before stumps, Surrey replied with 24 for 1 with Ryan Patel, pushing forward, caught at second slip for 4 off Sam Cook from what proved to be the final ball of the day. Rory Burns remained 18 not out.The determined seventh-wicket stand of 113 in 41 overs between Rossington and Harmer held up Surrey for more than two-and-a-half hours and blunted an attack that had looked unstoppable in the morning session.Worrall, Roach and Jamie Overton were all highly impressive in a sustained, top-class exhibition of pacy swing bowling, with only Alastair Cook resisting for long in the opening session as Surrey’s battery of fast and fast-medium bowlers exerted an early stranglehold every bit as oppressive as the near-40 degree temperatures.Kemar Roach celebrates taking the wicket of Matt Critchley•Getty Images for Surrey CCC

Nick Browne got to 10 with a couple of flowing off-side strokes before Roach shaped one away from the left-hander from around the wicket to force him to thin-edge to keeper Ben Foakes in the fifth over. And although Tom Westley did well to dig out a searing Roach yorker early on as he reached 11, helping Cook to take Essex to 50, the Essex captain became the first of three strikes in quick succession by Worrall when he played around a straight ball and was bowled by the Australian’s third ball back into the attack.Worrall then pinned Dan Lawrence leg-before for 0 with his next ball and, with the first ball of his next over, made one climb steeply at Paul Walter to have the tall left-hander caught at leg slip off the glove.Matt Critchley narrowly survived two confident lbw appeals by Worrall, who was combining sharp outswing and inswing with exemplary control, and Essex did well almost to reach the sanctuary of the lunch interval before Surrey’s quicker bowlers intervened again.Overton, reintroduced five minutes before the break by Surrey captain Burns for a second spell – this time from the Vauxhall End – angled his second ball across Cook to have England’s record Test run-getter well held by Ollie Pope at second slip for a 75-ball 29.Roach then bowled Critchley for 21 off an inside edge and both Rossington and Harmer had to negotiate a number of leg-before appeals in the afternoon session before reaching tea at 194 for 6.Rossington, on 16, also edged a brute of a ball from Overton just out of third slip’s reach for four and, on 28, was close to being lbw to Tom Lawes. Harmer, for his part, narrowly avoided the umpire’s raised finger against Overton on 6 and Roach on 26. The West Indian paceman, in particular, looked distraught at the not out decision.Fourth-placed Essex, starting this game on the back of three successive championship wins but still 47 points adrift of Surrey, albeit with a game in hand, had chosen to bat on a well-grassed surface and Rossington’s heroics made sure they reached a competitive total.Harmer, having faced 147 balls, was finally lbw to Worrall, who then trapped Shane Snater in front two balls later to leave Essex 204 for 8.But tailender Sam Cook’s unbeaten 21 was a more than useful hand as 58 more runs were added with Rossington for the ninth wicket. After Rossington had gone to Roach (3 for 63) for his superb 151-ball and 227-minute effort, featuring those three late sixes and nine fours besides, Worrall finished the innings by having last man Jamie Porter leg-before for a duck.
