Sunderland’s teen "super talent" could be their next Josh Maja

da dobrowin: Sunderland are now without a win in their last six games in the Championship after a Friday night defeat to new league leaders Sheffield United.

da apostaganha: The 1-0 loss that closed out a drab November for the Black Cats also meant that Regis Le Bris’ men had fired blanks in four out of six league contests in the harrowing month, as the strain of being near the top of the second tier pile continues to trouble the Wearside outfit.

Ultimately, the Frenchman will hope this is just a blip on the way to Sunderland rediscovering their best form down the line, as he attempts to get more out of his young squad across a hectic December.

The best of Sunderland's young team this season

Sunderland boasted the youngest average age of a lineup this season in the Championship, with the Black Cats XI that took to the field against Burnley at the end of August having an average age of just 22.7.

This approach of fielding up-and-coming youngsters paid off at the start of the campaign too, with the second-tier side’s only goal of the game against the Clarets coming courtesy of Romaine Mundle, as the 21-year-old went about breathing life back into his Sunderland playing days.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has ended up being a shrewd replacement for Jack Clarke, with Mundle equally as tricky and slick for Le Bris’ men as their former star once was, having amassed four goals and two assists in the league before a recent injury setback.

Mundle has also been joined in midfield this season by Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham – who are only 17 and 19 years of age respectively – but are important parts of the jigsaw under the former Lorient boss’ guidance nonetheless.

That amazing back-heel finish is just one of three strikes Rigg has managed in Championship action, whilst Bellingham has two goals and one assist next to his name as another dangerous midfield presence.

Le Bris could be looking at what he has at his disposal in the U21 fold soon to try and uncover another young gem at the Stadium of Light, with a striker potentially the next in line for a senior opportunity.

Sunderland's next Maja is ready to be unleashed

Of course, unlike the examples above where Sunderland have managed to keep hold of the cream of the crop that come up the ranks, Josh Maja is one that left the Stadium of Light before he had fully blossomed.

The now 24-year-old departed Wearside in the summer of 2019 after an explosive vain of form saw him net 15 strikes during the 2018/19 season in League One from just 24 encounters, with his golden touch in front of goal not letting up this campaign for West Bromwich Albion.

Maja has ten strikes next to his name from 18 second-tier contests, with Wilson Isidor five goals off that total at the moment in league action as one of Sunderland’s main outlets.

Therefore, Le Bris might well want to experiment with his options up top and chuck 17-year-old Trey Samuel-Ogunsuyi in at the deep end soon, hoping he can be the club’s goalscoring sensation from the academy, just like Maja.

Appearing on the bench here and there under the Frenchman, his first-ever appearance in the senior fold might well come about shortly, with Samuel-Ogunsuyi helping himself to eight goals from his last seven games playing for both the U18s and the U21s.

With Maja also helping himself to seven goals for the U21s before being bumped up to the first team, that could be what comes next for the “super” youngster – as he was labelled by football talent scout Antonio Mango recently.

"Wonderful" Newcastle ace hit with immediate international injury concern

da roleta: Reliable journalist Craig Hope has claimed that a “wonderful” Newcastle United player could now miss the entire international break after picking up an injury.

Newcastle pick up huge win at Nottingham Forest

da dobrowin: The Magpies secured arguably their most important Premier League win of the season so far on Sunday afternoon due to the resilience on show, coming from behind to win 3-1 away to an in-form Nottingham Forest side.

There were plenty who understandably felt that Forest would prevail, considering they sat third in the table going into the weekend action, but Newcastle’s quality shone through, with Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes all scoring in the second half at the City Ground.

There are definite signs that the Magpies’ season is beginning to catch light, following some indifferent results and performances earlier in the campaign, especially having also beaten Arsenal 1-0 at St James’ Park in their previous league outing.

Newcastle are now up into eighth place in the Premier League and just one point adrift of the Champions League places, with belief growing that they could make a return to Europe’s top club competition after a couple of seasons away from it. Eddie Howe isn’t short of injury problems at the moment, however, and a new update has emerged on the fitness of one key player.

"Wonderful" Newcastle player an injury doubt

According to Hope on X, Newcastle star Anthony Gordon could now miss international duty with England over the next few weeks, having suffered a hip injury in the win over Forest.

This will immediately concern some Magpies supporters, seeing as the £60,000-a-week Gordon has grown into a vital attacking figure since arriving from Everton, being lauded by Troy Deeney recently.

“Newcastle are a better team when he is involved. He got an assist for Alexander Isak’s winner against Arsenal, but the way he drives with the ball and carries the team forward means he’s always a threat. He can be on the right, left or the middle – he’s just a wonderful football player for Newcastle and England. Getting injured and then missing a penalty against Everton could have knocked his confidence but didn’t.”

From a Newcastle perspective, the hope is that the club are simply being cautious with Gordon, potentially removing him from England action in order not to risk him. It does feel like an international break where players from many clubs will be withdrawn, even though they could probably still be deemed fit enough to go and represent their respective countries.

While some may not like the idea of clubs behaving in that way, the importance of keeping players fresh for club duties is huge, so if Gordon has any kind of issue, he shouldn’t be going anywhere near the Three Lions setup.

Better than Isak: 8/10 Newcastle star just dropped a "monumental" display

This man who won 10 duels was even better than Isak for Newcastle against Forest

ByConnor Holden Nov 10, 2024

The 23-year-old may still be waiting for his season to fully ignite, with only two goals coming his way in the Premier League, but his inch-perfect assist for Isak’s winner against Arsenal summed up his ability.

Scouts sent to watch two Scottish sensations as Everton plot double swoop

da bet esporte: As the international break arrives, Everton have reportedly turned their attention towards the future and landing not one but two young stars from Scotland in a double swoop.

Everton transfer news

da bwin: The Toffees will welcome the international break with open arms having gone three games without victory in the Premier League after the ultimate stalemate against West Ham United. It had looked as though they finally turned a corner under Sean Dyche but recent results suggest that they’re far from out of trouble just yet, making further reinforcements all the more important.

On the transfer front, names such as Bright Osayi-Samuel and Tariq Lamptey have already been linked with a move to Goodison Park as The Friedkin Group look to make an instant impact on arrival.

Andy Robertson challenges Tariq Lamptey

Lamptey would be a particularly interesting deal. Once the next talented right-back coming through English football, Lamptey struggles to break into the Brighton & Hove Albion side these days, leaving the door ajar for an exit in 2025. In pursuit of rediscovering his form through game time, Goodison Park could be an ideal location. It’s not just current stars that the Toffees are targeting, however.

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Everton are now plotting a double swoop to sign Cole and Dylan Williams from Scottish side Airdrie after sending scouts to watch the twins in action.

Revealed: When Everton's takeover could be completed

The news comes after a sale has been agreed with the Premier League.

1 ByBen Browning Nov 13, 2024

Two players for the future at just 16 years old, Everton’s focus on youth should benefit them in the long term, especially as they aim to push beyond relegation scraps and gradually back towards the top half where they belong. Already named on the bench for Scottish Championship side Airdrie, the Williams twins are certainly ones to watch.

Williams twins are ones for the future

There’s plenty of famous siblings in football – be it Gary and Phil Neville or more recently Inaki and Nico Williams – and now the Williams twins may well follow in suit should they complete a move to Everton. Both midfielders, their own dream will undoubtedly be to form a partnership at the heart of a top flight side, which Everton could pave the way for.

Still incredibly young players, they will have it all to think about if the Toffees come calling. A place in the academy would likely await, of course, before a path towards the first team is formed. With Crystal Palace also reportedly interested, however, the twins could yet deal those in Merseyside the ultimate blow.

Whether it would be a good time to be joining Everton remains to be seen. When Dan Friedkin arrives, the hope will be that one of England’s oldest clubs finally climb away from relegation concerns and become a go-to side for young players once again. As things stand, however, a move to Goodison Park is one with far too many risks for one young player to complete, let alone two already making their way in senior football.

Renshaw's double and Neser's hundred put Queensland in command

Mitchell Swepson made inroads into NSW’s second innings to leave them struggling to save the game

Matt Renshaw and Queensland allrounder Michael Neser posted their highest scores in first-class cricket in a match-turning sixth-wicket stand to crush New South Wales on day three of their Sheffield Shield clash.Opener Renshaw made a masterful unbeaten 200 and Neser a whirlwind 136 as the duo combined in a 257-run sixth-wicket stand at Sydney’s Drummoyne Oval. When Neser departed, Queensland declared on 6 for 477 and NSW were 4 for 96 at stumps when bad light stopped play.Neser and Renshaw came together in the first over of the day after Jimmy Peirson was dismissed. The Queensland pair blitzed the bowling attack to score at more than five runs per over in a powerful partnership.Neser’s previous best was an innings of 121 in the Shield two seasons ago.  The 32-year-old, who played one Test for Australia last season, brought up his ton with a cut shot to deep point from Australia spinner Nathan Lyon and then went into overdrive.Matt Renshaw brought up a marathon double century•Getty Images

Renshaw’s knock could have ramifications beyond this match.  Five of his 15 boundaries were sixes and he showcased an array of attacking strokes which sent a message to Test selectors that his game has developed hugely. His knock surpassed the 184 he made for Australia against Pakistan in 2017. The century was his first as an opening batter for Queensland since 2017-18 and continued the form he displayed for Somerset in English county cricket this year where he twice passed the hundred mark.Renshaw batted in the middle order last season but captain Usman Khawaja moved him back to his former position at the top of the list to benefit Queensland, and with the hope of revitalising his Test career.Renshaw played the last of his 11 Tests in 2018 but with current Australia openers Khawaja and David Warner nearing the end of their careers he has reminded the selectors of his ability to now change gears with a match-defining innings in challenging conditions.Queensland legspinner Mitchwell Swepson was the pick of the bowlers and also ran out opener Blake Nikitaris.

7 Premier League players who could be future Ballon d'Or winners

da bet sport: The Ballon d’Or, awarded annually to the best player in world football, is the pinnacle of the sport’s individual achievements.

da wazamba: Previous winners of the legendary prize include Zinedine Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazario and Lionel Messi, who has scooped the prize a record eight times.

La Liga has produced the bulk of these winners, with 24 of the prize’s previous recipients playing in Spain at the time. With just two winners coming from the Premier League since 1992 – the last being Ronaldo in 2008 – England’s top flight pales in comparison, but the division’s stars have been increasingly recognised in recent years.

In each of the last four editions, a Premier League player has finished within the top three places for the Ballon d’Or, with Erling Haaland finishing second behind Messi in 2023, while Manchester City teammate Rodri took home the gong in 2024, much to the frustration of Vinicius Junior and Real Madrid

But who else from these shores could be awaiting such an accolade in the future? Here are seven top-flight players we think have a chance of being the Premier League’s next Ballon d’Or star.

Ballon d'Or 2024: The 10 favourites to win the men's award

The nominees have been announced, but who are the favourites to win the men’s Ballon d’Or in 2024?

1 ByLuke Randall Sep 4, 2024 1 Erling Haaland (Manchester City) Ballon d'Or best: 2nd (2023)

In the case of Erling Haaland, it’s surely more of a question of when he will win the Ballon d’Or than if.

Since bursting onto the scene with RB Salzburg in 2019, the Man City hitman has broken record after record. At just 24 years old, he’s already broken the record for the most Premier League goals scored in a single season, netting 36 in 38 games during the 2022/23 season.

Last term, he became the fastest and youngest player in history to score 40 Champions League goals, surpassing the previous record held by former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy by 10 games.

Haaland is also already Norway’s record goalscorer, having found the net 34 times in just 37 matches.

At the time of writing, he’s already hit 271 career goals at senior level and shown no signs of slowing down, having hit 13 in the first 12 games of this season.

Keep going, and it’s only a matter of time before he wins world football’s biggest individual prize thanks to his unrivalled scoring rate and growing trophy cabinet.

The best strikers in the world right now (Ranked)

These players all know where the back of the net is – but who can claim to be the best in the world?

ByLewis Thompson Jul 25, 2024 2 Cole Palmer (Chelsea) Ballon d'Or best: 25th (2024)

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

Only four English players in history have ever won the Ballon d’Or – Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan, and Michael Owen, with the latter scooping the prize back in 2001.

Based on his displays over the past year, Cole Palmer is arguably the most likely of any current Englishman to become the next name on that list. Since moving to Chelsea from Manchester City last summer, the 22-year-old playmaker has scored 31 goals and provided 20 assists in just 55 games for the Blues – figures that in the same time period are unmatched by any other midfielder in Europe’s top five leagues.

The 2024 Ballon d’Or nominee was also named England’s Player of the Year thanks to his impressive contributions at the summer’s European Championship, which saw him come off the bench to set up the winner in the semi-final against the Netherlands and score in the final against Spain.

Palmer already believes he’s got what it takes to win the Ballon d’Or one day: “I believe with hard work and consistency I could get there!”

England Player of the Year: 4 players who deserved it more than Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer has been voted England Player of the Year, but were some of his teammates robbed?

1 ByBarney Lane Oct 11, 2024 3 Bukayo Saka Ballon d'Or best: 21st (2024)

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka

One man who certainly doesn’t struggle when playing for his country is Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka.

Before Palmer scooped the award, Saka was voted England’s Player of the Year in 2022 and 2023. Since making his Three Lions debut in 2020, the 23-year-old winger has been an impressive star on the international stage.

Three of his goals came at the 2022 World Cup, where Gareth Southgate’s side were knocked out in the quarter-finals by eventual runners-up France.

Just as he is for his country, Saka is also a star player for Arsenal. Not only is he an attacking force to be reckoned with, but he also contributes a huge amount in defence, and despite his youth, he has already established himself as a leader for the club both on and off the pitch, having captained Mikel Arteta’s side on numerous occasions.

Saka is a superb team player, and should he finally be able to help Arsenal lift the Premier League title, there’s no reason he couldn’t be a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or.

4 Phil Foden Ballon d'Or best: 11th (2024)

Manchester City star Phil Foden

Phil Foden has everything it takes to one day be a Ballon d’Or winner.

Firstly, he’s a terrific footballer who boasts bags of skill, a superb passing range and an acute eye for goal. Secondly, he’s playing in a terrific team, meaning he will no doubt have many team honours bestowed upon him for years to come.

However, one thing that lets down the Englishman, who was named last season’s PFA Player of the Year, is his form on the international stage.

Foden has never really shown up for England. In 43 games for his country, he’s scored just four goals – only one of which was at a major tournament.

At the last European Championship, he started every game for Gareth Southgate’s side, but didn’t register a single goal contribution and came under heavy scrutiny for his performances, including from former Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who suggested that his old teammates Xavi and Andres Iniesta never went missing for their country as Foden does for England.

“He needs to want it more,” Fabregas said of the City midfielder.

If Foden can fix his form for England and continue playing as he is for City (perhaps ignoring his slow start to this season), he could one day find himself in contention for the Ballon d’Or, but only time will tell.

5 Mohamed Salah Ballon d'Or best: 5th (2019 & 2022)

Despite some stellar seasons at Anfield, Mohamed Salah has never really been in the mix when it comes to winning the Ballon d’Or. The closest he’s come to claiming the award was in 2019 and 2022, when he finished in fifth place. This year, he’s not even been included on the 30-man shortlist.

Given his extraordinary career, the Egyptian would be more than in his right to feel a little aggrieved.

Since moving to Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017, Salah has scored 218 goals in 361 games for the Reds, helping them lift the Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and the Premier League. He’s Liverpool’s top Premier League scorer of all time, a three-time Golden Boot winner, and a former Premier League Player of the Year winner.

At 32, time is now running out for Salah to win the Ballon d’Or, especially with his Liverpool future up in the air, but with a new era having recently dawned at Anfield in the wake of Jurgen Klopp’s departure, there is still a chance.

Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League table and Salah has been a key figure, scoring five goals and providing five assists. If he and Liverpool can continue that form and put an end to Manchester City’s four-year spell as Premier League champions, don’t be surprised if the forward is in contention next year.

Every Premier League Golden Boot winner

Some of the Premier League’s greatest goalscorers have won the Golden Boot – here’s every player to earn the coveted prize.

ByStephan Georgiou May 26, 2025 6 Virgil van Dijk Ballon d'Or best: 2nd (2019)

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

Most of the sentiments that have been applied to Salah above can also be applied to Virgil van Dijk.

Since moving to Liverpool in 2018, the Dutchman has been one of world football’s most outstanding central defenders, helping the Reds lift a plethora of trophies. He’s also been named the PFA Player of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.

Like his Egyptian teammate, however, he’s never won the Ballon d’Or.

He has come close, finishing just behind Lionel Messi in 2019, and if he and Liverpool continue as they are under Slot, it would be no surprise to see him back in contention in the near future.

Should he be pitted against Salah, however, it’s likely Salah would come out on top, given that the Ballon d’Or voters have a tendency to favour attackers when it comes to picking a winner – though international success with the Netherlands may yet give him the boost he needs, though this means he may have to stay on top form until 2026 at least.

Every winner of the PFA Player of the Year award since 2000

Some of the Premier League’s greats have won the coveted award over the years – here’s every winner since the millennium following Phil Foden’s win.

ByLuke Randall Aug 20, 2024 7 Son Heung-min Ballon d'Or best: 11th (2022)

No Asian footballer has ever won the Ballon d’Or, but if anyone is to finally do it, Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min, who finished 11th in 2022, looks best placed to become the first.

The South Korea international has been one of the Premier League’s outstanding players for almost a decade now. In 416 games for Spurs, he’s scored 165 goals, and alongside Harry Kane (at least, before he left for Bayern Munich), helped carry his team through tough times.

You can’t help but feel that if Son – who has all the attributes to be the world’s best player – wants to win the Ballon d’Or, he will have to follow Kane out of Tottenham to greener pastures. Traditionally, Ballon d’Or winners aren’t just great players, but also play for winning teams.

Right now, Tottenham aren’t that, and with Son fast approaching his 33rd birthday, time is running out for him to tick both of those boxes and put himself in contention. 2022 winner Karim Benzema was 34 when he grabbed the award, so it is not too late.

49ers plotting new contract talks for "magnificent" £2.6m-a-year Leeds star

da betway: Leeds United owners 49ers Enterprises are now thought to be plotting to give a new contract to a “magnificent” player who has just over 18 months left on his current deal, according to a fresh claim.

Farke's future at Leeds in doubt

da premier bet: The future of Daniel Farke at Elland Road is a major talking point currently, with the German under pressure after a hit-and-miss start to the Championship season for his Whites team. In fairness, Leeds do still sit sixth in the league table, helped by last Saturday’s 2-0 win away to Cardiff City, but this is a squad expected to push for automatic promotion.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, potential replacements are being looked at for Farke, should 49ers Enterprises decide to part company with him, and West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has been linked with the job, as he continues to do his reputation no harm at all.

The 41-year-old has guided the Baggies to the top of the Championship, following five wins and a draw from their six matches this season to date, with former Leeds academy player Romario Vieira even describing him as a “genius”. While the managerial situation is headline news at the moment, a key update has now emerged regarding the future of a current Leeds player.

Leeds want new deal for "magnificent" star

According to Football Insider, Leeds want to hand a new deal to Dan James, as the 49ers group look to tie down one of the most influential attacking players at the club. It is stated that the Whites are set to open talks to extend the 26-year-old’s stay at Elland Road, in order to avoid “entering the final 18 months of his deal with no agreement in place”.

Giving James a new-and-improved contract at Leeds is a no-brainer for 49ers, considering what an important figure he has become since trading Manchester United for the Whites back in 2021. Having been loaned out to Fulham in 2022/23, the £2.6m-a-year Welshman has impressed since returning, with Sky Sports pundit Michael Dawson heaping praise on him, calling him “absolutely magnificent”.
