Surrey table 40,000-seater development plan

Surrey are currently working on development plans which would make the ground the largest dedicated cricket stadium in the country

George Dobell09-Jun-2017Surrey hope to increase the capacity of The Oval to 40,000 in time for the 2023 Ashes. The club are currently working on development plans which would make the ground the largest dedicated cricket stadium in the country and increase capacity sharply on the current 25,500. Their aim, subject to planning permission and funding agreements, is to begin work after the 2019 World Cup.The centrepiece of the project would be a replacement for the Bedser Stand which could add up to 8000 seats. There would also be an enlargement of the existing OCS Stand. Surrey already have planning permission for a large development next to the pavilion – No. 1 Oval Square – which will incorporate additional capacity and facilities. The Oval has an outstanding record of attracting spectators. Surrey have led the way in optimising the domestic T20 market – their first Friday night fixture of this season’s campaign, versus Kent, has already sold out – and hope to host one of the newly branded teams in the competition scheduled to start in 2020.”The time is now right for cricket to think on a bigger scale,” Surrey chairman Richard Thompson said. “This summer we have seen unprecedented levels of demand for cricket at the Kia Oval. We need to build on this success and have a ground that can satisfy the unprecedented demand we have created.”Richard Gould, the club’s CEO, said: “Our business has taken off over the last five years and our reserves have quadrupled in size along with significantly higher profits. This has largely been driven through T20 cricket and an increase in our non-matchday business, but sales for international cricket also remain very strong. Most of our major games now sell out, either for county cricket or international cricket, and we need more seats to meet demand.”The schedule for the 2023 Ashes has yet to be announced but it is anticipated that the Ageas Bowl, near Southampton, will be competing with The Oval for the right to host a Test. The Oval’s staging agreement with the ECB (whereby they are guaranteed a Test a year) expires in 2022 and Surrey may fear that their opposition to the new-team T20 competition has done little to ingratiate them with the decision makers at the ECB. They are understood to have consulted with the ECB over their new plans, though it is unclear if they have been given assurances over future major match allocations.Certainly there seems to be increasing competition for the major match market. With the ECB looking at cutting the number of Tests each summer, the existing venues will be fighting harder than ever to retain the level of cricket they require to sustain themselves. And with talk of utilising other venues – such as the London Stadium (formerly the Olympic Stadium) – continuing, even the bigger grounds such as Lord’s and The Oval are not immune to these changes. It is telling that the news comes as the MCC announces the timetable for its planned redevelopment of Lord’s. While both MCC and The Oval are wealthy, it is possible that both will borrow heavily to fund the schemes, reviving memories of the ‘arms race’ of a decade or so ago that saw grounds across the country sink heavily into debt as they sought to build venues that would persuade the ECB to grant them more major matches.

Nico Schlotterbeck warned against Bayern Munich move as Germany legend suspects defender is waiting on Premier League offers amid Borussia Dortmund contract standoff

Germany legend Lothar Matthaus has advised Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck to reject a potential move to Bayern Munich if Dayot Upamecano remains at the club. The pundit believes the centre-back would struggle for game time in Bavaria and suspects that Schlotterbeck is currently stalling on a new contract because he is holding out for a lucrative transfer to the Premier League.

  • Schlotterbeck considering his options

Former Bayern Munich and Germany captain Matthaus has urged Schlotterbeck to think twice before swapping Borussia Dortmund for the Allianz Arena, warning the defender that he risks stalling his career if he moves to Bavaria while Upamecano is still present. The future of the 26-year-old centre-back has become a dominant topic in the Bundesliga with his contract at Dortmund expiring in the summer of 2027 and Bayern Munich monitoring his situation closely.

Schlotterbeck, who has established himself as a cornerstone of the Dortmund defence since his arrival from Freiburg, is currently at a career crossroads. With his contract winding down and no extension yet signed, despite Dortmund's clear desire to tie him to a new deal, speculation has mounted that the German champions could look to poach another key asset from their fierce rivals. However, Matthaus believes such a move would be fraught with risk for the player, particularly given the current hierarchy in Vincent Kompany’s squad.

    The Upamecano obstacle

Speaking to Sport Bild, Matthaus analysed the potential transfer and identified French international Dayot Upamecano as the primary barrier to Schlotterbeck’s success in Munich. Despite Schlotterbeck’s evident quality, the World Cup winner feels the tactical setup at Bayern does not currently have a vacancy for him.

"He is one of the best central defenders we have in Germany," Matthaus stated, acknowledging Schlotterbeck's rise to prominence. However, he quickly qualified that praise with a stark warning about the competition for places.

"I think it depends a lot on Upamecano," Matthaus continued. "If Upamecano stays, then it will be very difficult for Nico Schlotterbeck to become a regular player at Bayern. But we are not there yet. I don't know what Nico is planning."

The comments highlight the resurgence of Upamecano, who has seemingly solidified his place in the Bayern starting XI. Matthaus argues that unless the Frenchman departs, Schlotterbeck would likely find himself warming the bench – a scenario that would be detrimental to his ambitions with the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

  • Eyes on England?

Matthaus also offered a theory regarding the delay in Schlotterbeck’s contract renewal at Signal Iduna Park. While Dortmund are keen to tie their defensive leader down to a long-term deal, the player’s camp has remained non-committal. The German legend suspects that this hesitation is not about leverage for a better salary in the Bundesliga, but rather a desire to test himself in England where Liverpool are said to be eyeing him.

"In Dortmund he has his position," Matthaus observed. "I don't know what he is waiting for: probably still for offers from England."

The Premier League has long been touted as a potential destination for Schlotterbeck, whose physical profile, left-footed distribution, and ability to drive into midfield make him an attractive proposition for top English clubs. A La Liga adventure has also been touted as a possibility for the Germany international, with Real Madrid said to be interested. Barcelona had also been linked due to his connection with coach Hansi Flick but recent reports claim the club are reluctant to move for him over concerns about his playing style.

'At the back of the queue'

Ultimately, Matthaus’s advice was clear: stay where you are a guaranteed starter, or move abroad, but do not go to Munich to be a backup. He reiterated that as long as the current defensive partnerships at Bayern are functioning, Schlotterbeck would be taking a significant gamble by moving south.

"But if Bayern get along with Upamecano, then I wouldn't necessarily advise Nico to go to Bayern Munich, because then he will be at the back of the queue for the time being," Matthaus concluded.

The intervention from such a high-profile figure adds pressure on Schlotterbeck to clarify his future. For Dortmund, the priority remains securing the signature of their defensive talisman to avoid losing him on a free transfer or for a reduced fee. Bayern, meanwhile, are confident of convincing Upamecano to sign a new contract as the threat of a free transfer looms, suggesting Schlotterbeck may have to give some real thought to Matthaus' comments.

Sophie Ecclestone named in England squad for Ashes

The left-arm spinner replaces Beth Langston in only change to the squad that clinched the
Women’s World Cup in July

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Sep-2017Eighteen-year-old left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, who made her ODI debut last year, has been named in the England women squad as they attempt to regain the Ashes, which begins in Australia on October 22. Ecclestone replaced medium-pacer Beth Langston as the only change to the squad that clinched the Women’s World Cup in July this year.”Sophie Ecclestone has finished school now and has had a great summer domestically,” England coach Mark Robinson said. “Her selection will provide another option to our attack.”England leave for Brisbane on October 7 for the multi-format series that starts with three ODIs. That will be followed by a day-night Test in Sydney, before the tour concludes with three T20Is.”Ashes tours don’t come around all too often, so it’s always a special opportunity,” England captain Heather Knight said. “Australia are going to be very strong opponents on their home soil, so we’ll have to be at our best, across all three formats.”England women squad: Heather Knight (c), Tammy Beaumont, Katherine Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone, Georgia Elwiss, Jenny Gunn, Alex Hartley, Danielle Hazell, Laura Marsh, Anya Shrubsole, Nat Sciver, Sarah Taylor (wk), Fran Wilson, Lauren Winfield, Danielle Wyatt

Understated Foakes a world-class understudy

Ben Foakes has been described as “the best wicketkeeper in the world” but will travel to Australia as Jonny Bairstow’s deputy

Alan Gardner29-Oct-2017If Alec Stewart is correct, England have packed the best wicketkeeper in the world among their Ashes luggage, almost as you would take a spare toothbrush on holiday.Ben Foakes, uncapped and on his first senior tour, travels to Australia as Jonny Bairstow’s deputy, though such is the nature of England expeditions Down Under, it would not be entirely surprising if he somehow ended the series batting in the middle order: as well as his ability with the gloves, Foakes is a batsman good enough to average more than 40 in first-class cricket. His rise has perhaps taken longer than some expected, having been selected for England Lions as a 19-year-old, but two seasons of immaculate glovework and crisp run-scoring at Surrey have pushed him into the role of Test understudy ahead of Jos Buttler, who keeps in the white-ball formats.”It has taken a couple of weeks to sink in,” Foakes said, speaking in the Long Room at Lord’s, undaunted at being first into the fray for England’s departure press conference. “Jonny is obviously world class, I can’t go out there expecting to replace him. I am just trying to prepare to play the first game if needed.”When I first came to Surrey I wasn’t keeping regularly and at Essex I was behind James Foster – I had to make a decision to move to Surrey and the last couple of years I have been able to keep regularly, and my main focus was on red-ball cricket. To be able to be here now shows the progress I’ve made.”While Bairstow has bristled at the idea of relinquishing the gloves, England may eventually conclude that Foakes is wasted as a luxury item. If the top five continues to misfire, and with Ben Stokes currently out of consideration for his usual role at No. 6, the temptation to bat Bairstow higher and bring in Foakes will grow.It is an area in which England can contrast themselves favourably with Australia, who have several names in the frame to push the incumbent, Matthew Wade, but little certainty as to who will take the gloves in Brisbane and beyond.Foakes is a quietly assured operator, happy to let his game do the talking. His father, former Premier League referee Peter, died of a heart attack when he was 13 – he has the date tattooed on his wrist – but Ben emerged from that “difficult time” to break into Essex’s first team while still a teenager. Foster’s excellence blocked his path at Chelmsford but he saw off the competition at Surrey, who at one stage could choose between Foakes, Steven Davies, Gary Wilson and Kumar Sangakkara. He was likened to an “artist” for his keeping with the Lions in Sri Lanka earlier this year, by former England coach and Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Andy Flower. Stewart’s praise then took things up a notch. “I saw it on Facebook and obviously had a few Indian fans jibing and bringing up MS Dhoni,” Foakes said. “I think to hear that is lovely.”He has plenty of experience of Australia, having played there in an Under-19 World Cup and on the 2012-13 Lions tour – from which, coincidentally, Stokes was sent home for one too many nights out – as well as spending some time with Adelaide University.Given the England team that finished the 2013-14 Ashes featured five changes from the one that started the series, it’s a reasonable bet that Australia could also be the place where Foakes makes his international debut.”I think it is an amazing place to play cricket, the whole package out there is the best experience of cricket I have had,” Foakes said. “You get a bit of grief that is quite a natural sort of mentality – I don’t look at that stuff too much, it’s about trying to represent my country and do everything I can for England.”I think our chances are very good – we have world-class performers with a lot of experience, which obviously makes a real difference to any side, and I think it is about how the less-experienced guys are able to support them and lift our games and learn off them.”The wisdom of Foakes’ inclusion may soon become apparent. As the Chris Evans TV show of the 90s once instructed: don’t forget your toothbrush.

Inter Miami have also been able to acquire USMNT star Julian Gressel – a two-time MLS Cup winner – and have other gaps to fill on their roster. They had hoped to lure former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo away from Boca Juniors, but the no-nonsense Argentine has decided to remain in his homeland.

  • WHAT MARTINO SAID

Martino has told of the ongoing search for fresh faces, with further movement to be expected: “Julian Gressel has arrived, I know him from my time in Atlanta, we have chosen him in our first draft. I think the league hasn’t moved much, so I think there are going to be some more changes. The teams are just about start the pre-season, it occurs to me that we ourselves are also in certain searches: we have lost Kamal Miller, our second central defender. Marcos Rojo has not been able to be done, but we are in the search to complete a team that has three very important fronts to compete on this year. The truth is that we intend to be competitive.”

Kedar Devdhar hits maiden ton, Raina misfires again

Robin Uthappa effected four dismissals behind the stumps and struck 52 off 36 balls for Saurashtra while Krunal Pandya took 2 for 23 with the ball to stifle Gujarat

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Jan-2018Uttar Pradesh captain Suresh Raina’s poor form continued as his team went down to Madhya Pradesh by seven wickets in Raipur. This was Uttar Pradesh’s second defeat in as many matches at this venue. Following his 13 against Rajasthan on Tuesday, Raina contributed only 1 to Uttar Pradesh’s total of 108 after they had been sent into bat.Coming in at the fall of Sarul Kanwar in the fourth over, Raina lasted only two balls as he was trapped lbw by seamer Ishwar Pandey. Raina, who was recently retained by Chennai Super Kings for INR 11 crore, had a poor Ranji Trophy season as well, averaging 11.66 from five matches.Sarfraz Khan, a surprise retention for Royal Challengers Bangalore, top-scored with a 19-ball 20 even as Uttar Pradesh slumped from 17 for 1 to 83 for 7. Each of Madhya Pradesh’s frontline seamers – Pandey, Avesh Khan and Puneet Datey – picked up a wicket before spinners Ankit Sharma (2 for 22) and Mihir Hirwani bored through the middle order. An unbeaten half-century from opener Rajat Patidar meant Madhya Pradesh completed their chase with seven wickets and 18 balls to spare.BCCI

Kedar Devdhar’s 61-ball 100, his maiden T20 century, helped Baroda beat Gujarat by 36 runs and condemn them to their third successive defeat in the West Zone league. While IPL stars Deepak Hooda and Krunal Pandya managed only single-digit scores, Swapnil Singh chipped in with a 28-ball 44 to propel Baroda’s total to 175 . Krunal, though, had a better outing with the ball to finish with figures of 2 for 23 as Gujarat were bowled out for 139 in 18 overs. Gujarat’s two major contributions came from Chirag Gandhi (52 off 41 balls) and captain Axar Patel (33 off 19 balls). Baroda now lead the West Zone standings with eight points from two games.Seamer Shaurya Sanandia’s four-wicket haul and Robin Uthappa’s all-round effort led Saurashtra to an eight-wicket win over Mumbai in Rajkot. After opting to bat, Mumbai suffered a middle-order collapse to go from 65 for 2 to 66 for 5 in less than two overs. Only captain Aditya Tare (39 off 23 balls) and Siddhesh Lad (38) made sizeable contributions for Mumbai. Uthappa finished with four dismissals before muscling a 36-ball 52 to ensure Saurashtra won with 16 balls to spare. Saurashtra have now won both their matches so far.

Misbah and Akmal stand tall

Stats highlights from the third day of the India-Pakistan Test in Kolkata

Cricinfo staff02-Dec-2007

Kamran Akmal has struggled behind the stumps, but has been in superb form with the bat
© AFP
  • The 207-run stand between Misbah-ul-Haq and Kamran Akmal equals Pakistan’s record for the sixth wicket in Tests against India. Saleem Malik and Imran Khan had added 207 in Faisalabad in 1982-83. It’s also the highest sixth-wicket stand at Eden Gardens.
  • Akmal has been struggling behind the stumps, but with the bat he has done little wrong in the last couple of months. This was his third 50-plus score in his last five Test innings. His 119 is his fifth Test century, and his second-highest, next to the 154 he scored against England in Lahore in 2005-06.
  • Akmal has has scored five Test hundreds, which is a record for a Pakistan wicketkeeper. Moin Khan is next in line with four.
  • This was Akmal’s fourth century versus India, against whom he averages 47.64 in ten Tests. No other wicketkeeper has scored as many hundreds against India; Andy Flower has three.
  • Misbah-ul-Haq has been on a roll as well. Since returning to the Test team in October, Misbah has notched up scores of 23, 23, 41, 82, 45, and 108 not out – 322 runs in five completed innings at an average of 64.40.
  • This is only the third time that five centuries have been scored in a Test in Kolkata. The India-South Africa Test in 1996-97 and the India-West Indies match in 2002-03 had also seen as many hundreds.
  • Magical Harmer takes Essex 29 points clear

Chelmsford is the birthplace of artists and magicians. Simon Harmer, making a home for himself there, could be both after another extraordinary display stretched Essex’s lead to 29 points

    Paul Edwards at Chelmsford29-Jun-2017
ScorecardChelmsford is the birthplace of the artist Grayson Perry and was also the town where the 16th century magician, John Dee, was educated. It is therefore well-used to astonishing transformations. However, whether credulous or sceptical, residents will have seen little to compare with the latter stages of this match, when Simon Harmer engraved his name in folk memory of Essex cricket-lovers on one the greatest day’s sport seen on this ground. In November 2015 Harmer was playing for South Africa in a Test match at Nagpur. Since then he has seen his stock fall in his home country and in the winter he committed himself to a career as a county cricketer with Essex.Last week he took 14 wickets against Warwickshire and on this wonderful last day against the champions he collected a career-best 9 for 95 finishing the match with figures of 14-172. By doing so he sent a thousand or so hardy souls at the County Ground into floodlit ecstasy, for they had seen their side complete their third victory in succession and this with a maximum of eight balls remaining in the game. When they descend from their rare euphoria, Essex supporters may realise that their team is now 29 points clear at the top of the Division One table. What they will also understand is that they have witnessed a victory the unlikelihood of which made it all the more worthy of celebration. With six overs left to be bowled Essex still needed four wickets and doubts began to creep in among spectators, even if the hesitancy of the later Middlesex batsmen encouraged hope among Ryan ten Doeschate’s players. That belief was fuelled by the fact that the pink Duke’s ball was retaining its bounce more than the red variety, a fact which the 6ft 2ins Harmer had been able to exploit throughout the match. And the problems of the Middlesex batsmen were increased by Harmer’s ability to use the footholes left by Mohammed Amir and Paul Walter. For all that time was running out, one never felt that Dawid Malan’s batsmen were comfortable. Certainly they never looked like clearing the 296-run deficit established by Essex’s dynamic batting on the third day of this game.In the 108th over of the innings Ryan Higgins played inside what looked like an arm ball and was caught at slip by Alastair Cook, for whom this match was the pleasantest of temporary farewells before the Test series. Three balls later Ollie Rayner collected a pair when he was leg before on the front foot. Harmer had now taken all eight wickets to fall in the innings but his chances of taking all ten disappeared three overs later when Dan Lawrence trapped Toby Roland-Jones lbw for a single although there was a case the ball pitched outside leg. Nobody minded, least of all Harmer who brushed away Lawrence apologies in the joy of shared achievement. Three balls of Harmer’s subsequent over passed and it seemed clear that Lawrence or possibly Amir would be bowling the last over of the game.Simon Harmer wheels away with his Essex team-mates after his match-sealing wicket•Getty Images

That over was never delivered. Perhaps scared of commitment, Steven Finn plunged forward but played no shot to Harmer’s third last ball of the game. An appeal followed that could be heard in either of the Baddows. There was a raised finger from David Millns. Harmer began the first Essex bowler since Mark Ilott in 1995 to take nine wickets in an innings and ten Doeschate’s men are hot favourites for the title now. This will be Harmer’s match but so was last week’s.”It’s not going to get too much better than this,” said Harmer. “You just need to ride the wave – they don’t come around that often. We will enjoy tonight and have a few beers. It’s an incredible win for the club. It puts us in phenomenal position going into the last six games of the season. We’ve done a lot of hard work, a lot of hard graft and been on top of our game. We’ve come out on top in the last 10 minutes of the day today. These are the moments you play cricket for. It makes all the hard graft worth it.”And yet it takes two teams to make a contest as noble as this one and in the joy of Harmer’s achievement, even the Essex supporters spared applause for Nick Compton, whose innings of 120 looked likely to frustrate Essex. And the Middlesex opener’s tale shares a very rough parallel with that of Harmer.Just over a year ago Compton’s name was blazoned in headlines. He was an England batsman. Yet within a few weeks some who had advocated his selection were vehement that he should never have been picked in the first place. No one, of course, has mentioned his name in connection with the England side for next week’s Test at Lord’s. Yet as we watched Compton make his century and bat in vain to save the game it was plain that he still retains the skill to play this game at a high level and the temperament to defy opponents in full cry.Harmer v Compton. Given a couple of different turns on the wheels of fortune and circumstance, it was a battle which might have been seen in next week’s Test match. And on the evidence of this quite wonderful last day at Chelmsford it would not have disgraced the stage at St John’s Wood.Compton arrived at New Writtle Street having scored 81 championship runs in four innings; injury and indifferent form have kept him out of the Middlesex team. Those factors by themselves were enough to make his effort at Chelmsford admirable. Yet the virtues of his batting were magnified by the intensity of the contest and the fact that his principal adversary, Harmer, is in the form of his life.So much was proved in the first half hour of play when Harmer dismissed Nick Gubbins, Stevie Eskinazi and Dawid Malan in five overs from the River End, reducing Middlesex to 51 for 3 and encouraging the hopes of home supporters that they were about to see ten Doeschate’s team achieve a facile innings victory and their fifth Division One triumph of the season.Yet this early clatter was misleading; instead of offering a strong clue to the narrative of the day, it merely set up the terrific duel of Thursday’s cricket: Both our principals had considerable help, of course. The main assistance to Harmer probably came from Dan Lawrence, whose high action gave his off-spinners every chance to bounce uncomfortably.Nick Compton dug in to defy the home attack•Getty Images

Compton was assisted deep into the heart of the day and beyond by Paul Stirling, who batted with commendable coolness and against his attacking instincts to make 55 in 202 minutes. While Compton and Stirling were adding 153 in 55 overs the five points for a draw were plainly secure. Then, five minutes before tea, Stirling, who had been dropped three times, was safely caught by Ravi Bopara at backward short leg. John Simpson resisted for 50 minutes but was beaten by Harmer’s turn and taken by Cook. Then Compton having faced 303 balls, 59 more than in his entire season before this innings, was leg before playing no shot to Harmer. The door was open and the Essex cricketers plunged through it. “Harmer’s a proper bowler,” said Essex’s Keith Fletcher, who faced a few and has seen countless more. No one anywhere in Essex doubts that judgement this glorious June evening.
