Premier League club now actively trying to sell "superb" Leeds target

Daniel Farke and Leeds United need to strengthen at right-back this month. Djed Spence has returned to parent club Tottenham Hotspur halfway through was meant to be a season-long loan spell, and Luke Ayling has joined Middlesbrough until the end of the season. If the gap goes unfilled, Farke may be concerned about being caught short as he bids to steer his side to promotion from the Championship.

One player who's emerged as a target is West Ham's Ben Johnson. The Athletic's Phil Hay has named him as a player of interest for the Whites, with his ability to play in either full-back role no doubt a considerable draw. Significantly, there's now been an update on Johnson's availability in January.

West Ham make stance on Johnson clear

According to The Daily Mail, West Ham want to sell Leeds target Johnson, rather than loan him out. The player has rejected the offer of a new contract, and his current terms are due to expire in the summer, so that puts pressure on the Irons to cash in rather than risk losing him for nothing.

Leeds United transfer target Ben Johnson before a Premier League game with West Ham.

In addition, West Ham know that they could put the proceeds from the prospective sale towards a new attacker, which is on the agenda at the London Stadium in the next couple of weeks. Leeds' interest is real but they have yet to make an "official approach" so the 49ers will need to stump up the cash soon, as Sheffield United and Scottish Premiership title-chasers Rangers are keeping an eye on his situation too.

Johnson has edge over Williams and Roberts

Former West Ham star Trevor Sinclair has previously dubbed Johnson, a two-time winner of West Ham's young player of the year award, "superb", but would he be the best fit for Farke?

He's been limited to two Premier League appearances under David Moyes this season, only one from the start, but a couple of Leeds' other targets in the top flight also find themselves down the pecking order. Nottingham Forest's Neco Williams has only started four matches, while Burnley's Connor Roberts hasn't made the XI since late October. The table below compares the players in their experience, one-v-one defending and attacking output, all surely key criteria in Leeds' search.

You can see that, even though there's a disparity in appearances, they're all in the same bracket for starts and broadly aligned for minutes too. Williams stands out going forward, and while he's won the highest volume of tackles, it's Johnson who has posted comfortably the best success rate. As an all-round option, then, he may have the edge on the other two, and crucially, he's available for transfer. The big question now is how much West Ham will demand, and whether that's within Leeds' budget for the mid-season market.

Seniors search for form as Bangladesh, Zimbabwe look to fight their way out of a corner

Given Afghanistan’s blazing start in the tri-series, this is a match the other two sides will want to win to stay in the race

The Preview by Mohammad Isam17-Sep-2019

Big Picture

Bangladesh and Zimbabwe have been no match for Afghanistan in the T20I tri-series so far, so the game on Wednesday is one neither side can afford to slip up in. Both teams have failed to produce noteworthy moments so far, and both sets of senior players have gone through a rough time, though Bangladesh hold the advantage after having won the first encounter between the two.The hosts’ problems against Afghanistan have resulted in quite a few changes to their squad for the remaining league matches, although only Soumya Sarkar’s axing was as a result of his poor performances; Mahedi Hasan, Abu Hider and Yeasin Arafat were all dropped without playing a game.Bangladesh must arrest the top-order slides that marred their chances in the first two matches. Seniors Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah have not made significant contributions yet, and the likes of Liton Das and Sabbir Rahman haven’t pulled the team out of crises either. Among the bowlers, only Mohammad Saifuddin has stood out with wickets.Zimbabwe have plenty to gain if they can manage to beat the under-fire home side. Much like in the case of Bangladesh, their senior batsmen – Brendan Taylor, Hamilton Masakadza, Sean Williams and Craig Ervine – must be desperate for runs. On the bowling front, Neville Madziva has at times impressed with his slower bouncers, and Kyle Jarvis has occasionally tested batsmen with pace and bounce, but Masakadza will probably rely on his spinners in the main to keep things tight. It will be interesting to see if the two team managements feel some of their younger players can be tried out in their top orders. For Zimbabwe, that could mean breaking up the Taylor-Masakadza pairing, but one of them can add a bit of meat and experience down the order. As for Bangladesh, Mohammad Naim, the second-highest scorer in the last edition of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, could get in at the top of the order.

Form guide

Bangladesh: LWLWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Zimbabwe: LLWLT

In the spotlight

Since his breakthrough 94 against West Indies in the World Cup, Liton Das hasn’t crossed 33 in eight innings across formats, his last outing a duck against Afghanistan in the previous game. Some of Bangladesh’s batting woes will go away if he finds form.Ryan Burl has been something of a surprise package for Zimbabwe in this tri-series, having made a rapid, unbeaten fifty against Bangladesh in the first game, and a run-a-ball 25 against Afghanistan. His side would hope for consistency from him in the rest of the series.

Team news

With Soumya axed from the squad, Bangladesh may look to hand a T20I debut to Mohammad Naim, the lanky opener who has impressed recently in domestic cricket. If they are willing to be a little adventurous, legspin-bowling allrounder Aminul Islam could be a possible replacement for Sabbir Rahman.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Mohammad Naim, 2 Liton Das, 3 Shakib Al Hasan (capt), 4 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 5 Mahmudullah, 6 Sabbir Rahman, 7 Mosaddek Hossain, 8 Afif Hossain, 9 Mohammad Saifuddin, 10 Taijul Islam, 11 Mustafizur RahmanZimbabwe can try out Chris Mpofu and Richmond Mutumbami, who are yet to play on this tour. Tony Munyonga, the 20-year-old allrounder, should get another opportunity as he neither batted nor bowled in his debut against Bangladesh on September 13.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Brendan Taylor (wk), 2 Hamilton Masakadza (capt), 3 Craig Ervine, 4 Sean Williams, 5 Tinotenda Mutombodzi, 6 Ryan Burl, 7 Regis Chakabva, 8 Neville Madziva, 9 Kyle Jarvis, 10 Ainsley Ndlovu, Tendai Chatara

Pitch and conditions

Sides batting first have averaged 138 runs in night games at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, but the totals vary wildly: from Netherlands’ 39 all out to South Africa’s 196 for 5.There is a slight possibility of a shower in the evening.

Stats and trivia

  • Asghar Afghan is now the second Afghanistan player to appear in 50 consecutive T20Is for his country. Mohammad Shahzad tops the overall list with 58.
  • Mustafizur Rahman is one wicket short of becoming the second Bangladesh bowler to take 50 T20I wickets. Shakib is the overall leader with 90 wickets.
  • Sabbir is 55 short of becoming the fifth batsman to reach 1000 T20I runs for Bangladesh.

Journalist reveals cheap fee Spurs need to seal Sebastian Caceres signing

Tottenham Hotspur could strike a pretty cheap move for a defender who's been starring for his country this year, according to reports this week.

Postecoglou demands early Spurs signings in January

Following a series of injuries and suspensions this season, manager Ange Postecoglou has told Spurs to make early signings in January.

Defence is a particular weak spot, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero both out injured. Indeed, manager Postecoglou's continued lack of faith in Eric Dier has forced the Australian to use makeshift pair Emerson Royal and Ben Davies once again.

Spurs' winning streak came to an end on Thursday night, losing 4-2 to Brighton, and it was their first match without Romero since Postecoglou ruled him out for five to five weeks.

"It's another challenge for us, with two games in a short space of time and a smallish squad available," said Postecoglou on Romero's injury, later insisting Spurs need to seal early January signings amid their squad shortage (via The Mail).

"Obviously if we can do business early it's great, not just because of losing Romero, but there's a whole month there – why waste it?

"Even if they don't play, you can bed them into training and our style of football, because it's not like we're going to sign somebody and they'll hit the ground running. Whereas if you leave it towards the end of January, it's potentially not until the middle or end of February when they get up to speed, depending on the league they're coming from.

'I'd love to do something early, but even me saying that puts a challenge on us. Other clubs know we want to do something early, but I'm hopeful it will be much earlier than the end of the window before we bring someone in."

Tottenham have been linked with a host of centre-backs as we approach the winter transfer market's reopening, and one of them is Club America defender Sebastian Caceres.

Spurs could strike really cheap Caceres move

The Uruguay international has been a star for his country under former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa this year, with Caceres attracting serious interest from Spurs as a result.

His Club America contract expires in December 2024, meaning the Mexican side either have to agree a new deal for Caceres or sell him sooner rather than later.

Now, according to journalist Jonatan Pena, Tottenham and other interested sides could strike a deal for Caceres at under £8 million – which would come as a pretty affordable fee where chairman Daniel Levy is concerned.

Caceres has been praised by members of the media in his homeland as an "untouchable" star of his national team, making that fee seem like a price worth paying.

New Chelsea signing Facundo Buonanotte brutally left OUT of Champions League squad just two days after revealing excitement at playing in elite European competition for first time

Just days after gushing about the chance to live his Champions League dream, Facundo Buonanotte has been brutally snubbed. The 20-year-old Argentine, Chelsea’s latest summer recruit, has been left out of the Blues’ European squad in a decision that embarrassed the midfielder who had only just spoken of his excitement.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Buonanotte joined the West London giants on September 1 in a season-long loan deal from Brighton. It was Chelsea’s tenth signing of the window and their fifth attacking addition in what has been one of the busiest recruitment drives in club history. The deal, worth around £2 million in loan fees, was struck after Chelsea swooped in at the final moment to beat Leeds United, who had been close to securing him. The South American youngster arrived at Stamford Bridge with a solid reputation, having made 50 appearances for Brighton, scoring five goals, and already boasting two senior caps for Argentina.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

When signing, Buonanotte spoke with pride about joining Chelsea and specifically about playing under the bright lights of Europe’s biggest stage.

“It’s a massive step in my career,” he told club media. "I’m really happy to be here and ready to offer as much as I can to the team and the staff. I’m sure it will be a positive season. Of course, I’ll get the opportunity to play in the Champions League for the first time, which will be a great challenge. I’m really looking forward to this season and hopefully I can help the club to achieve its goals."

Just two days later, those words were rendered hollow as his name was left off Chelsea’s official Champions League squad list.

  • TELL ME MORE

With Enzo Maresca dealing with an inflated squad packed with new arrivals, tough choices had to be made. Regulations restrict Champions League squads to 25 senior players, and while youngsters under 21 who have been at the club for more than two years can be added freely, Buonanotte does not qualify. As a result, Maresca wielded the axe, and Buonanotte, one of the most recent arrivals, was among the casualties.

While Buonanotte sits out, Chelsea have still managed to squeeze in other high-profile names. Alejandro Garnacho, snapped up from Manchester United this summer, has been included. Romeo Lavia, Tyrique George, and Josh Acheampong also qualify under UEFA’s youth exemption rules and will be available.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

UEFA’s strict financial regulations have intensified Chelsea’s selection headaches. In July, the club were slapped with a €31 million (£27m/$36m) fine and told they must ensure a positive transfer balance from last season’s Conference League squad to this season’s Champions League squad. That ruling forced the club to be extra cautious in how they constructed their European roster.

Fifteen-year-old Shafali Verma gets maiden India call-up

Teenager Pooja Vastrakar also returns to the T20I squad led by Harmanpreet Kaur, while D Hemalatha is back for the ODIs

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Sep-2019India women have named uncapped 15-year-old batsman Shafali Verma in their T20I squad for the first three – of five – games of the series against South Africa, which starts on September 24 in Surat. Another teenager, 19-year-old allrounder Pooja Vastrakar, who debuted in 2018, has been recalled to the team that will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur.Alongside that of Harleen Deol, the selection of Verma and Vastrakar seems to signal a decided move towards youth as they come in to replace the likes of Ekta Bisht, Komal Zanzad and Mithali Raj, who retired from T20Is on Tuesday.Raj will continue to lead the ODI squad, where D Hemalatha returns after having missed the ODIs against England earlier this year.Verma, who has never played at the senior level, was among the brightest players in the Women’s T20 Challenge in May, impressing the likes of Dani Wyatt, her team-mate at Velocity, with her hitting ability at the top of the innings. She had previously rocked the domestic T20 scene with Haryana during the 2018-19 senior women’s inter-state T20 tournament, making 186 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 187.87, including a tournament-high 128 off 56 balls against Nagaland. For Vastrakar, it’s a first stint with the team since June 2018, with an injury keeping her away from Women’s World T20 last year. The seam-bowling allrounder scores at a rate of 137.09 and has taken 12 wickets at 18.50 in a career of 11 T20Is, and could partner one of Shikha Pandey and Arundathi Reddy in India’s seam attack. Mansi Joshi is also in the mix with a return to the squad, while the spin options remain largely the same as the one that lost the series to England, with the addition of Harmanpreet, who had missed that series. For the three-match ODI series, which starts on October 9 in Vadodara, Mona Meshram has been left out of the squad following a dip in performances in recent times. Meshram made ducks in both her innings against England, and was among the batsmen who copped criticism during India’s below-par Asia Cup in 2018. Tamil Nadu’s Hemalatha takes her place in the squad, while Deol has been left out, having previously been named for the England series. Kaur returns to the ODI set-up as vice-captain.Veda Krishnamurthy continues to miss out from the ODIs, but has retained her spot for the T20Is despite her three single-digit scores in her last four innings. Taniya Bhatia is the wicketkeeper in both squads.India squad for first three T20Is: Harmanpreet Kaur (captain), Smriti Mandhana (vice-captain), Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Taniya Bhatia (wicketkeeper), Poonam Yadav, Shikha Pandey, Arundhati Reddy, Pooja Vastrakar, Radha Yadav, Veda Krishnamurthy, Harleen Deol, Anuja Patil, Shafali Verma, Mansi JoshiIndia squad for ODIs: Mithali Raj (captain), Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur (vice-captain), Punam Raut, Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, Taniya Bhatia (wicketkeeper), Jhulan Goswami, Shikha Pandey, Mansi Joshi, Ekta Bisht, Poonam Yadav, D Hemalatha, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Priya Punia

Celtic watching Antoine Semenyo

Celtic saw some big names wave goodbye to the Parkhead club during what ended up being a rather busy previous summer transfer window.

One figure that left last summer after making a big impact during his time as a Celtic player was striker Odsonne Edouard.

After scoring 86 goals in 179 appearances for the Hoops, the Frenchman was sold to Crystal Palace in a deal worth £15m.

While Ange Postecoglou’s side haven’t exactly missed having the 24-year-old in their ranks as they ended the 2021/22 SPFL campaign as the league’s top-scoring side, it seems as though the club may have identified one figure that they could sign in the summer as a potential next version of Edouard.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from the Daily Record, Celtic have watched Bristol City striker Antoine Semenyo in person after being linked with a transfer move for the 22-year-old.

As a product of City’s youth system, the striker had loan spells at clubs such as Bath City, Newport County and Sunderland before becoming a regular figure for Nigel Pearson’s side.

Edouard 2.0

This season has seen the Ghanaian become a deadly figure in the Championship for City by racking up eight goals and 12 assists in 31 appearances, leaving only Andreas Weimann with more goal contributions.

To further highlight how much of an attacking threat he has been throughout this campaign, Semenyo has the highest average for shots and second-highest for key passes per game in City’s squad.

As well as having a knack for scoring on a fairly regular basis, as Edouard did at Celtic, the City star has also shown that he’s capable of creating goals for his teammates.

This backs up why Pearson claimed that his player is a “nightmare to play against” and why he has a reported price tag of a whopping £20m.

While this may be a hefty transfer fee for the Hoops to splash out on, their £40m prize money for winning the league and securing their place in the Champions League could help them out when it comes to negotiating a cheaper deal for the player.

Should Postecoglou feel the need to strengthen and refresh what is an already deadly attack in his squad this summer, securing a move for Semenyo could be the best way for the Hoops to do that.

'Absolutely heartbroken' – Jack Grealish vows to use England Euro 2024 snub as 'motivation' after 'most difficult' moment of Man City winger's career

The 28-year-old winger played a prominent role for the Three Lions in their run to the final of Euro 2020, while also figuring in Gareth Southgate’s plans at the 2022 World Cup. A dip in form at club level did, however, lead to him being left out of another European Championship party.

    WHAT GREALISH SAID

Grealish had to watch on from afar as England came agonisingly close to landing elusive major silverware and has said of his omission from that squad: “I’ll be honest it was probably, football-wise, the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to deal with in my career. I was absolutely heartbroken and then obviously when you’re on your holidays, wherever I was, every time you turn on the phone or turn on the TV or whatever, you just see it. So it was hard to not to see it. For myself now, moving forward, I have to just try to use that as motivation going into this season and try to have the same mentality as I had two years ago. In my first season at City I don’t think I performed as well as I could and in the second season I played in a lot of the games and that was down to the first season. I had wanted to come back stronger and I certainly did that, so hopefully I can do that again.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Grealish has scored only 14 goals through 125 appearances for City, but hopes an early return to pre-season – having had no international football to contend with – will have him raring to go in 2024-25. He added while on a summer tour of the United States: “This is my chance to get my fitness, to have a two-week head start and try to be as fit as possible. And I’m playing with confidence. I feel like that’s what I need and fingers crossed I can do that.”

    WHAT NEXT?

City have landed the Premier League title in each of Grealish’s three seasons at the Etihad Stadium, while also claiming Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup honours. The former Aston Villa star still has three years left to run on the contract that he signed when completing a British record transfer to Manchester.

India won't 'jump the gun' with Ajinkya Rahane, says Virat Kohli

Rahane’s lean patch over the last two years could happen to anyone, says Indian captain as he backs his deputy

Vishal Dikshit in Mumbai30-Jul-2019Despite an up-and-down 2018 in Test cricket and a difficult county stint this year, India’s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has received the backing of captain Virat Kohli, who reaffirmed that he thought of his colleague as a “solid player”. Speaking before the tours of the USA and the West Indies, where India will play their maiden World Test Championship series, Kohli expected Rahane to “come around” as he has “done the job under pressure”.Once a mainstay in India’s batting line-up, especially on away tours, Rahane was left out of the first two Tests on the South Africa tour last year before returning to the XI for the entire England and Australia series, as well as the West Indies series at home. But, in this period, Rahane didn’t look like the confident batsman of the past, especially in 2014. Since his last Test century – 28 innings ago and spanning nearly two years – Rahane has made only five 50-plus scores. He averages 24.85 during this period.Kohli, however, believes there is no need to “jump the gun” on a player like Rahane because of the composure and the reliability he brings.”Jinks [Rahane] has been a solid player for us through and through and that’s always been our communication,” Kohli said. “He is one of the most sorted guys. Really, really composed, reads the game well also, priceless fielder, we have all seen the impact he can make in Test cricket with his slip catching and everything. I think under pressure he has performed really well. The guy averages 43 (40.55) in Test cricket, it’s not like he is in the early 30s. I don’t think we should jump the gun on someone like Jinks because he has done the job for you under pressure.”Rahane had been the vice-captain for the 2018 South Africa tour too, but his Mumbai team-mate Rohit Sharma was preferred in the XI for the first two Tests because of “the way he (Rohit) was batting against Sri Lanka and in the ODI format,” Kohli explained. On returning to the XI, Rahane scored a fighting 48 at No. 6 in the third innings of the Test, helping India secure their only win by 63 runs.He then went on to score two half-centuries each in England and Australia but his average in those series were 25.70 and 31 respectively, much below the standards he had set for himself at the beginning of his career. Since his 132 against Sri Lanka in August 2017, he has averaged below nine other Indian batsmen who have played at least ten innings in that period.Rahane has turned to first-class cricket several times in this phase: against England Lions before the England Tests last year, versus New Zealand A prior to the Australia Tests, and a county stint this summer with Hampshire. In the county circuit, he began with a century against Nottinghamshire, his first in 39 first-class innings, but couldn’t keep up the tempo. He was unable to score a half-century in the remaining 11 innings and even bagged a pair against Essex, playing all of three balls in the match. What lies ahead of him is a two-Test series in the West Indies, where the hosts’ fast bowlers have troubled many a team recently. Not to forget, Rohit, fresh from hitting five centuries at the World Cup, is breathing down his neck for a spot in the XI.”It’s a patch that anyone can go through but I think he will come around because he is that good a player and when he does, we know he can be very consistent,” Kohli said. “He is one of the pillars of our batting order that we can bank on. Him and [Cheteshwar] Pujara, as I’ve said, have been our most solid Test players. I am sure along with Puji playing so well, myself at No. 4, Jinks will also come into the groove and once he starts scoring, he can spring in scores on a consistent basis.”We are not at all worried about where he’s placed. It’s about giving him confidence and he really wants to turn it around. That’s the most important thing and that’s all that matters.”

Celtic make Cameron Carter-Vickers "priority"

A big Celtic summer transfer window update has emerged on the club’s plans for Cameron Carter-Vickers…

What’s the talk?

Transfer insider Pete O’Rourke has revealed that the Hoops’ number one objective ahead of the 2022/23 campaign is to sign the American defender at the end of his loan spell at Parkhead.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m sure Celtic have got a list of potential replacements if they’re not able to make this Carter-Vickers deal a permanent arrangement from Tottenham.

“But that’s the priority right now. They want to make this deal permanent.”

Spurs reportedly want a deal worth up to £10m for the central defender and O’Rourke has confirmed that the club will be pushing to get a move over the line.

Great news for Ange Postecoglou

This is great news for the Celtic head coach as bringing Carter-Vickers in on a permanent basis would be a terrific signing for the club in the short and long-term.

The defender enjoyed a phenomenal season on loan in Glasgow as he played a huge role in the team winning the Premiership title. He arrived on a temporary basis last summer and hit the ground running as he quickly established himself at the heart of the backline for Postecoglou.

Carter-Vickers ended the campaign with an average SofaScore rating of 7.33 across 33 appearances – out of a possible 38 – in the Scottish top-flight. The defender won 68% of his individual duels in the competition and made 4.1 clearances per game as he proved his quality at his level.

This shows that he will be a fantastic addition to the squad in the short-term next season, as Celtic know that he is able to consistently perform to a high standard.

In the long-term, Carter-Vickers will be an investment for the club. At the age of 24, he has plenty of development left ahead of him and this means that he can improve as a player and increase his potential value.

The centre-back can be sold on for a huge profit in the future if he is able to fulfil his potential and make himself an attractive target for top European teams. This makes him a shrewd signing both in terms of what he offers on the pitch and what he can offer to the club in the future in a financial sense.

Therefore, it is great news for Postecoglou that the club have made a permanent swoop for the centre-back a priority.
