Arsenal wanted "incredible" England star but signed Odegaard instead

Mikel Arteta has utterly transformed Arsenal during his time in the hot seat.

When he took over, the Gunners were an aimless side drifting towards mid-table mediocrity, but five years later, they’re contesting their third Premier League title race on the bounce.

It’s not just through the Spaniard’s tactical nous, leadership and man management that he’s turned the North Londoners around, but also his recruitment.

Alongside Edu Gaspar, he’s overseen the signing of several sensational talents in recent years, such as Declan Rice and Kai Havertz, but his best acquisition so far has been Martin Odegaard. However, in another world, it might not have even happened, as before the Norwegian joined on a permanent deal, the club were keen on another talented midfielder.

Odegaard's Arsenal career

Odegaard first joined Arsenal on a six-month loan from Real Madrid in January 2021, and while he didn’t blow the roof off the Emirates in those six months, in which he racked up four goals and assists in 20 appearances, he did enough to impress Arteta and Co, who proceeded to spend £30m on him that summer.

martin-odegaard-transfer-gossip-tottenham-hotspur-postecoglou-jeremy-doku

Since then, the 25-year-old has gone from strength to strength in North London, making a total of 156 appearances for the club, in which he has scored 35 goals and provided 25 assists, equating to an impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.6 games.

On top of producing a regular supply of goal involvements and doing things with the ball at his feet that few other players could even dream of, the Drammen-born maestro has become one of the core leaders of the team and was named club captain in July 2022 at just 23 years old.

Odegaard’s importance to the team has been made even more explicit this season, as following an injury he suffered on international duty in September, the Gunners have looked far less creative in games and have struggled to break down opposition sides in a way they didn’t last year.

Overall, it’s hard to imagine where Arsenal would be today without Odegaard, so it’s good that Arteta and Edu signed him over a talented England international they were interested in during the summer of 2021.

Arsenal's interest in James Maddison

Yes, the English midfielder in question is none other than Tottenham Hotspur co-vice-captain James Maddison.

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison

However, two years before he joined the white side of North London, it was Arsenal who were most interested in his services, with a report from Sky Sports confirming that the Gunners were keen to sign him a few weeks before they eventually bought Odegaard.

With the Norwegian through the door, Arteta and Co understandably turned their attentions to other areas of the team, and the Leicester City star remained in the midlands for another two seasons, where, following the Foxes’ relegation in 22/23, he moved to N17 for a fee of around £40m.

However, while the “incredible” midfielder, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, had just scored ten goals and provided nine assists for a recently relegated team, he failed to have the same impact in North London and ended his debut season for the Lilywhites with a middling tally of four goals and nine assists in 28 league games.

In contrast, Arteta’s dynamic captain had just enjoyed another stellar season down the Seven Sisters Road, in which he scored eight goals and provided ten assists in 35 league games and came within just two points of lifting the title.

In his defence, Maddison has looked bright in moments this season and has a haul of two goals and three assists in nine games, but he was also hooked at halftime against West Ham United and looked bereft of ideas in the defeat to Crystal Palace last week.

Ultimately, both midfielders are undeniably talented and can change games in a moment, but if you were to ask Arsenal fans if they’d rather have Odegaard at the club or Maddison, you’d be hard-pressed to find many who’d pick the latter.

The Norwegian has shown that he can do everything the Englishman can but also adds leadership and consistency to the mix, so it was a great decision from Arteta and Edu in 2021 to sign him over the Leicester star.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Deulofeu is a Barcelona academy graduate and played four times for Spain, as well as enjoying spells at Everton, Watford and AC Milan. He ruptured his ACL while in action for the Hornets against Liverpool in February 2020 before continuing to suffer once he had signed for Udinese in Italy. He tore his ACL again in November 2022 before undergoing surgery in January 2023 which resulted in infected cartilage. He has not played first-team football since.

    WHAT DEULOFEU SAID

Upon announcing he had left Udinese, Deulofeu said: "I've been through a terrible time. Two years ago I did my ACL against Napoli but I recovered and played against Sampdoria with a ruptured cruciate. The bad news came after the match when I found out I needed surgery. Unfortunately, after the operation, I got a cartilage infection. It's more than a normal injury. I've been battling for two years against this thing that's almost beyond biology. I'm better now than I was a few months ago but we'll see what happens."

  • WHAT NEXT FOR DEULOFEU?

Deulofeu claimed in his statement that should he ever return to fitness, he would like to return to Udinese. He said: "It means so much to me that the club supported me and is waiting for me. If I do play again one day, I have no doubt it will be for this club and for these people who have always helped me."

Moeen Ali likely to miss Chennai Super Kings' opener against Kolkata Knight Riders

Chennai Super Kings are likely to be without Moeen Ali for the IPL 2022 opener against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday. ESPNcricinfo understands that the England allrounder is stranded in the UK, having failed to secure the visa necessary to travel to India for the IPL.It is learned that Moeen would need to arrive in Mumbai by Wednesday to stand a chance of playing his team’s first match against 2021 runners-up Knight Riders. Considering that Moeen would need to undergo the mandatory three-day quarantine to enter the IPL bio-secure environment, Super Kings’ management has accepted that the chances of him playing the opening match appear remote. In a reply to a question on the allrounder’s availability on Twitter, Aces Middle East, the sports management company that represents a number of cricketers including Moeen, said he hadn’t been issued his visa yet.

If Moeen fails to make it, Super Kings could hand an IPL debut to New Zealand batter Devon Conway and pair him up with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa in the top order. The Super Kings will likely feel the pinch in their first match, considering Moeen’s offspin would have been handy against Knight Riders’ trio of left-handers: Venkatesh Iyer, Nitish Rana and Sunil Narine.Moeen, who was retained by Super Kings, as one of the four players, prior to the auction, played a key role in the side winning their fourth IPL title last year. He was the third-highest scorer for Super Kings in 2021, hitting 357 runs in 15 innings at an average of 25.50 and strike rate of 137.30. That Moeen fulfilled his role of the aggressor could be seen from the fact that he was fifth on the list of batters with most sixes, with his count at 19.More than handy offspinner, Moeen also proved to be a key bowler, the highlight being his match-winning spell of 3 for 7 against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium in the initial part of IPL 2021.Since then Moeen has retired from Test cricket, but he continues to excel in the shorter formats. At the inaugural Hundred, he led Birmingham Phoenix to the final and then played a significant role in England making the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. More recently, he was instrumental in Comilla Victorians winning the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).GMT 1445 The news piece was updated to include the tweet from the management company that represents Moeen.

Leeds working to sign left-back with Rutter and Summerville replacements

Leeds United are set to be busy in the final days of the transfer window as they target a whole host of new faces before the August 30th deadline, and now an update on their plans has emerged.

Farke working with a thin Leeds squad

After two games of the Championship season, few would have predicted Daniel Farke's side to be without a win, but after two draws they find themselves down in 16th and four points off the very early pace set by Burnley, Sunderland and Watford.

They also exited the Carabao Cup in the first round, falling to a tame 3-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in front of a restless Elland Road that threatens to turn sour if results don't pick up soon.

It comes off the back of a difficult summer, which has seen them lose over 10 players and take in more than £100m from sales, only to sign four as replacements.

That includes a trio of stars from last season in the shape of Crysencio Summerville, Georginio Rutter and Archie Gray, all of whom have been snapped up by Premier League clubs.

It means that as things stand, Leeds have a squad of just 19 players for Farke to choose from. Those 19 consist of three centre-backs to cover two positions, one recognised right back, three midfielders to cover two positions, one attacking midfielder and no recognised left-winger, while there are question marks over several members of the squad.

£3m+ Leeds target now personally pushing to join Farke before the deadline

Farke outlined that he wanted at least four new faces following their draw with West Brom on Saturday. "We would need cover at full-back, in midfield and two offensive positions. Cannot guarantee we will get all of these, but four is roughly what I would like to see."

Now, one report has provided further insight into the 49ers Enterprises' plans for the final days of the window.

Three positions targeted for Leeds United

That comes courtesy of journalist Pete O'Rourke, who claims that Leeds are eyeing up three positions as a matter of urgency.

Writing for Football Insider, he revealed that a left-back is a priority at the club, with backup to Junior Firpo thin on the ground.

Farke is "prioritising a new signing on the left side of his defence", it is claimed, with the Leeds boss looking for a long-term replacement for Firpo, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

Additionally, they are "also prioritising deals for a striker and winger to replace the output of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter," who contributed a combined 49 goals and assists last season.

That return will be hard for any new signings to match, but the Yorkshire side have been linked with moves for Sunderland's Jack Clarke and more recently Burnley forward Manuel Benson as they look to try and achieve it.

It will be a crucial few days for Leeds though, with their current squad depth arguably unlikely to be able to even challenge for the play-offs over the course of the season, let alone the automatic promotion spots that their fans expect to be battling for.

Yorkshire agree Lahore Qalandars partnership in bid to 'reduce barriers to entry'

Haris Rauf will join the county in 2022 as part of a player exchange programme

Matt Roller21-Dec-2021Yorkshire have unveiled a partnership with Lahore Qalandars, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise, which will aim to “nurture talent [by] reducing barriers to entry” following the racism crisis which has engulfed the county. The most pertinent part of the partnership is Yorkshire’s intention to “learn from and emulate” the Qalandars’ players development program (PDP), which provides opportunities to over 150 young players annually and aims to unearth new talent regardless of background.Haris Rauf, who has won 42 caps for Pakistan since attending Qalandars trials in 2017 and bowling with a leather ball for the first time, has been the PDP’s poster boy, and the partnership will see him join Yorkshire as an overseas player for “a period of the 2022 season”.It will also see two teams play a friendly game at Gaddafi Stadium on January 16, academy players given opportunities to train overseas, and scholarships for aspiring players from both Yorkshire and Lahore as part of an exchange programme. Harry Brook, Yorkshire’s brightest young talent, was signed by the Qalandars in last week’s PSL draft.Related

Yorkshire come to grief over Rafiq affair, but acceptance is a way off yet

'A superstar Pakistan deserves': The rise and rise of Haris Rauf

The partnership represents a significant step in Lord Kamlesh Patel’s attempts to rebuild Yorkshire following his appointment as chair, which came about after Roger Hutton resigned in light of Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of institutional racism at the club and the handling of the report into them.Among his first moves was the decision to sack the club’s entire coaching staff as part of a major overhaul which saw 16 people removed from their roles, with Darren Gough later appointed as interim director of cricket.Yorkshire have advertised for the head coach, assistant coach, 2nd XI coach and academy coach roles in the last week, as well as inviting applications for up to six new non-executive directors “who are representative of the communities the club serves [and] are committed to the board’s aim to tackle discrimination and racism”.Yorkshire’s first-team squad contains only one non-white player – Adil Rashid, who is rarely available to play for the county due to his status as a centrally-contracted England player – and Lord Patel said that the partnership would help create a club “that is welcoming and supportive to all”.”The work the Lahore Qalandars do both on and off the pitch is remarkable and can serve as a benchmark for clubs around the world – ours included – for how best to spot, foster and support talent at all levels in the game of cricket,” Lord Patel said.”The Players Development Program is an incredible achievement – breaking the mould for how teams can be created within our sport, and demonstrating that through offering access and support, great cricketing talent can be found from all backgrounds.”Haris Rauf was first spotted at Lahore Qalandars’ open trials in 2017•Lahore QalandarsThe Qalandars already have similar partnerships with other clubs, most notably Melbourne Stars in Australia’s Big Bash League where Rauf, Dilbar Hussain, Syed Faridoun and Ahmed Daniyal have all been given opportunities in recent seasons.Rauf will be playing county cricket for the first time after agreeing to join the club and will be their first Asian overseas player since Cheteshwar Pujara in 2018, whose nickname ‘Steve’ came under scrutiny during Rafiq’s testimony to a parliamentary select committee in October.Gough said he was “thrilled” to have signed an “exceptionally talented” bowler in Rauf and that he hoped the partnership would widen access. “I have spoken in the past about my passion for developing accessible pathways to cricket,” he said.”For many people from a background like mine, cricket isn’t seen as an option, with the associated costs and access to facilities creating real barriers to entry. This partnership is an opportunity to take the blueprint the Qalandars have developed to such a success and work with them to define how that can be used to provide access for potential players from across Yorkshire.”

From the backwaters to the big leagues

Many Indian players from small towns with little to no cricket facilities have made it big recently. One of them is India’s Under-19 captain, Vijay Zol

Kanishkaa Balachandran13-Feb-20140:00

‘Familiarity with conditions gives us an advantage’

When Vijay Zol was in class nine, he had had enough. The promising left-hand batsman was busy playing matches in his district, but at the expense of his school attendance, which had fallen well below the minimum 75%.”My school timings were from 8am to 5pm. I would be up at 5, practise in the morning, head to school, practise again in the evening for a couple of hours, head to tuitions, and then return home only at 9,” Zol says. “It was difficult and I did that routine for a year. But despite that, I wasn’t allowed to sit for the exams. I was quite pissed”.Juggling cricket with studies was clearly proving to be unmanageable, so Zol decided he had to quit one. He hasn’t been back at school since. It was a decision driven by his passion for the game and a determination to succeed. His parents supported his move, which, in academics-obsessed India, is unimaginable. The most common reason for cases of students dropping out of school is a cash-crunch at home, but in Zol’s case, money was not the issue.Zol’s father, a criminal lawyer in Jalna, Maharashtra, where the family lives, had the resources to prepare a cement wicket in their backyard so his son could practise. The small town, hardly a nerve centre of sport, had barely any cricket facilities to speak of. The only ground was used for football and there were no turf wickets.

“I remember Sachin [Tendulkar] telling us that come what may, when the chips are down, you need to deal with it as a team. We really back each other when someone fails or is feeling down”

Zol may not yet have transformed his town’s reputation as a cricketing backwater, but he has certainly put Jalna on the map while still in his teens. An aggressive batsman who initially shot to fame with a monumental 451 in a Cooch Behar Under-19 game in 2011, he is now India’s U-19 captain, hoping to defend their World Cup title in the UAE. He was part of the previous World Cup as a player, and is now in charge of the most successful U-19 team in the world, on current form. India have won all four series they have played in the lead-up, defeating Australia and South Africa in two finals. Zol’s century in the Asia Cup final, against Pakistan, showed his big-match temperament.Aside from junior cricket, his impressive CV includes a century on first-class debut – against an international attack – and a double-century on Ranji Trophy debut for Maharashtra. His rise coincided with Maharashtra’s in this year’s Ranji Trophy, in which they finished runners-up. His unbeaten 91 helped beat defending champions Mumbai in the quarter-final, and though the U-19 camp was gathering steam ahead of the World Cup at the time, he was asked to play in the final. Though he wasn’t as successful in Maharashtra’s last two knockout matches, he remained a player to watch. On paper, Zol’s transition from U-19 cricket to first-class may appear seamless – with an average pushing 50 after 11 games – but he says it has been a humbling experience. “I learnt how to react if things don’t go your way. In U-19 cricket you sometimes dominate, but the Ranji Trophy is a different league in which you have to be very patient. I have played well in patches.”Zol was fast-tracked into the India A side before his Maharashtra debut. Against a New Zealand A attack that included Mark Gillespie and Doug Bracewell, he smashed 19 fours in his 110. Recounting the innings, he says he told himself not be overwhelmed by the occasion or the bowlers. “When I went in, the ball wasn’t doing much, but I was still nervous. I just focused on facing the ball, not the bowler. I attacked their legspinners.”Zol’s father can take some credit for his son’s achievements. It was when Zol was recovering from a knee surgery a few years ago that his father had the cement wicket made. There are shades here of the Yuvraj Singh story, but unlike Yograj Singh, Zol’s father only mentors his son, leaving the technical aspects to Zol’s childhood coach.”He [my father] is a big follower of the game and understands the game really well. We never discuss technique much, he mostly advises me on the mental side of the game, boosts me when I lose confidence, tells me to stay balanced and not let success get to my head. Even when I achieve something, I don’t feel as happy. I would rather see my father happy, and that’s not always easy, I know,” Zol says with a chuckle.”So long as I work hard and smart, the facilities don’t really matter. The hunger was always there to play for India. My dedication and motivation always made up for it”•ICC/GettyWhen he scored his quadruple-century against Assam in December 2011, his father refrained from gushing about the innings. Zol understood then that while it’s good to toast a headline-grabbing innings, you’re only as good as your last knock. “On day one I was on 261. I got a call from my dad and he told me to chill and play [according] to the merit of the ball. When I passed 400 my coach called my dad. He was happy but he didn’t show it. He just told me to concentrate on the next game. [That innings] has a special place in my heart.”That knock, and his latest exploits, have underlined the fact that small-town players have taken Indian cricket by storm of late. Zol insists there was no temptation for him to move to a bigger centre like Mumbai or Pune for the sake of his cricket. In fact, he says the lack of facilities in his town fuelled his determination to grab every opportunity.”So long as I work hard and smart, the facilities don’t really matter. The hunger was always there to play for India. My dedication and motivation always made up for it [lack of facilities]. But cricketers have to face certain difficulties or you don’t get there very easily. There are so many players from the bigger cities who have the best of facilities and still don’t make the cut.”The squad Zol will lead has a blend of players from cities and towns of varying sizes and cricketing pedigree. He says the sense of “togetherness” has been carried forward in every series and that has made his job easier.”I remember Sachin [Tendulkar] telling us that come what may, when the chips are down, you need to deal with it as a team,” he says. “We really back each other when someone fails or is feeling down. We enjoy each other’s success. I don’t feel any pressure, because we understand each other’s roles.”While Zol will look to take his cricket forward after the World Cup, he insists that he hasn’t abandoned his books for good. His brother is also a lawyer and his sisters are teachers. “I come from that environment, so I have to study,” he says with a smile, shrugging his shoulders.

Guptill brilliance helps New Zealand see off steely Scotland

Opener’s 93 sets up big batting finish; Scotland chase fizzles after brief dominance

Firdose Moonda03-Nov-2021New Zealand gained two valuable points with a solid win over Scotland, who applied themselves better than they did in the first two Super 12 fixtures. It means New Zealand join Afghanistan on four points in Group 2, which setS up an intriguing clash between the two teams on Sunday. Before that, Afghanistan have to play India, the result of which could also be crucial in determining who progresses to the semi-final.On a fresh pitch in Dubai, described by the television commentators as the best for run-scoring in the tournament so far, New Zealand posted 172 for 5, thanks largely to a 105-run fourth-wicket stand between Martin Guptill and Glenn Phillips. Guptill went on to score a 50-ball 93.Watch cricket live on ESPN+

Scotland’s chase was steady, and even threatening in parts, but struggled to keep up with the required run-rate. They reached their 50 in 6.2 overs and needed 97 runs off the last 10. Mitchell Santner and Tim Southee were miserly but Scotland stayed in the hunt until close to the end. An unbeaten 50-run stand between Michael Leask and Chris Greaves kept them in with a chance until the last over but New Zealand’s experience held out.Martin’s milestones
Guptill anchored and then accelerated New Zealand’s innings and enjoyed several achievements along the way. He became the second batter to reach 3000 T20I runs when he sent an Alasdair Evans leg-stump half-volley over backward square leg for six. Guptill is second only to Virat Kohli in T20I runs, and is only 156 runs behind. He also became the batter with the most sixes in this format, when he slog-swept Chris Greaves onto the top tier of the stands. That was Guptill’s 150th six in T20Is and measured 102 metres, one short of the biggest in the tournament so far. Guptill shared in a 105-run stand with Phillips which formed the spine of New Zealand’s total, and was in a good position to bring up his third T20I hundred but was out when chipped Brad Wheal to long-on to end what looked like an exhausting innings.Sharif’s double-strike in the powerplay
Safyaan Sharif pulled Scotland back from their worst start in this tournament – an opening over that cost 13 runs – when he gave away only a single in the second over. Then, he changed ends and pushed them ahead with a double strike in the fifth over, which was one wide away from giving Scotland their first maiden over at this competition. With the first ball of his second over, Sharif had Daryl Mitchell trapped on the back pad with a delivery that looked a touch too high at first glance. Ahsan Raza raised his finger and Mitchell reviewed but ball-tracking showed the ball tickling the bails and the decision was upheld. Four balls later, Sharif bagged one of the wickets of his career when Kane Williamson followed a delivery headed down the leg side, Matthew Cross took a diving catch to his left and Williamson walked. New Zealand were 36 for 2, which became 52 for 3 when Devon Conway was dismissed for 1 and in some trouble.Post-powerplay strangle
Scotland applied a squeeze through spin in the four overs after the Powerplay to put the breaks on New Zealand. Mark Watt and Chris Greaves gave away just 18 runs in 24 balls between overs 6-10, with only one boundary. Watt also got rid of Conway in that time to continue a magical run at this T20 World Cup. He has taken at least one wicket in all the nine matches he has played at the men’s T20 World Cup. And he has been miserly too. Watt has conceded less than 24 runs in all but his debut game where he went for 30 runs.Maiden and then the most
The 13th maiden over at this competition came from Adam Milne, who bowled the fourth over of Scotland’s chase. All six of his deliveries were back of a length and speedy. He reached up to 147kph and beat Matthew Cross three times in the over to complete only his second run-less over in his format. His first was vs Pakistan in 2016. But Milne did not have the final say on the Powerplay after Cross got his own back in the sixth over when he hit five successive fours, and should have had a sixth. Cross pulled the first two balls before picking the knuckle ball and driving it through the covers. He got a top-edge as he tried to pull the fourth – a bouncer – and it went over the wicket-keeper’s head for four, and then settled to slice the fifth ball past gully. The final delivery was back of a length and could have been swatted through mid-wicket but Cross inside-edged onto his pad. It’s only the second time we’ve seen five fours in an over in the men’s T20I World Cup after Jacques Kallis’ against Scotland’s Jan Stander, in 2009.

Their answer to Saka: £40m "phenomenon" now wants late move to Chelsea

da heads bet: It's been a while since a player was welcomed to Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea last signing Joao Felix in a £46m deal just over one week ago.

da jogodeouro: There's going to be some more movement before the market slams its shutters, with the Blues trawling through the list to identify a prolific centre-forward.

Todd Boehly, Behdad Eghbali and Co are opportunistic fellows, and while Chelsea have an exciting attacking mix, Raheem Sterling is expected to leave, and there's a target who would love to take his place at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea transfer news

Sterling is one of the Premier League's most decorated players, but he doesn't fit into Enzo Maresca's vision. The Italian head coach has been refreshingly candid about that, and so a solution seems probable.

Manchester United have held exploratory talks with the England international, which could pave the way for Jadon Sancho to join Chelsea.

Courted by Juventus, the winger, 24, is reported to be holding out for a move to west London, according to The Guardian, with Sancho available for a reported £40m fee.

What Jadon Sancho would bring to Chelsea

Long-lost prodigious potential, where have you gone? Sancho joined Borussia Dortmund from Manchester City as a teenager and quite quickly got people talking.

Jadon Sancho in action for Man United in the Premier League.

Once dubbed a "phenomenon" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 17-year-old rejected a professional deal at the Etihad and sought to make his name in Germany, with an outfit venerated for its youth production and unique fan-club connection.

He made significant headway in the years leading to a £73m transfer to Old Trafford, sending English football into a furore.

The winger, fleet of foot and fast of mind, hasn't been able to bring it all together with Man United, only scoring nine Premier League goals since his arrival three years ago and even being branded a "complete waste of money" by pundit Paul Parker.

But oh there's a player in there. Sancho was ostracised from Erik ten Hag's first team last year before returning to Dortmund for a short-term loan spell in January, but he posted six goals across 21 Premier League starts in 2022/23 and did manage to make something of an impression.

It was enough to suggest that he could have a prosperous future in his homeland, with FBref recording his performances to be similar to those of Bukayo Saka, that term.

Saka, Arsenal superstar, is one of European football's hottest commodities and has been the attacking nucleus of Mikel Arteta's Emirates reign, with the 23-year-old's stylistic approach working wonders.

But as you can see above, the last time Sancho tried his hand in the Premier League with any meaningful consistency highlighted an underlying tenacity through ball-carrying and -passing metrics, also demonstrating his athleticism through a notable number of recoveries.

Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus once pronounced Sancho to be the "perfect player", such is his level, such is his talent. He's demonstrated on the biggest stage that he has the quality to succeed at the height of the game, and given his Saka-like properties, Chelsea might just find success in bringing him to Stamford Bridge.

It's a risk, sure, but the potential plunder could stretch to high-stacked piles, and with Sterling headed the other way, five years Sancho's senior, this could be a brilliant move for a Chelsea team starting to rise.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 36-year-old joined Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in elite company as the only players to have more than 100 goals in the Champions League.

Lewandowski scored in the 10th minute against the French outfit to bring up a century of goals in Europe's most prestigious club competition, and then made it 101 goals by scoring in stoppage time. However, he is still some way off catching up to Ronaldo and Messi, who have 140 and 129 goals respectively.

Lewandowski's 101 goals, though, have come in just 125 games, which makes him the player with the best goals-per-game ratio among the trio. He scored 17 goals for Borussia Dortmund, 69 for Bayern Munich, and has 15 for Barcelona. With seven goals, the Barca No. 9 is the leading goal scorer in the ongoing campaign.

  • WHAT ROBERT LEWANDOWSKI SAID

Speaking to the press after the game, Lewandowski said: “Years ago I didn’t think I would reach my 100th goal in the Champions League. It’s good to have your name next to Cristiano and Messi. I’m very happy, I didn’t think I would score this many goals in the Champions League."

    WHAT NEXT FOR BARCELONA?

With the win over Brest, Barcelona climbed to second spot in the Champions League standings. Their next game in the competition is away at Borussia Dortmund on December 11. However, they have a cause for concern domestically, as a loss against Real Sociedad and the draw against Celta Vigo last weekend sees them just four points clear of Real Madrid having played one game more. Flick's troops will face Las Palmas next on Saturday, November 30, in LaLiga.
