Hampshire 215 for 3 (Bouchier 92, McCaughan 68) beat Essex 190 for 7 (Winfield-Hill 69, Tyson 3-40) by 25 runsMaia Bouchier and Ella McCaughan pulverised 158 runs together as Hampshire recorded the fifth-highest T20 score in Utilita Bowl history to thrash Essex in the Women’s Vitality Blast.Bouchier hammered 92 off 53 balls, and McCaughan 68 in 39 in a brutal batting display on a stunning batting track. The 215 that Hampshire racked up was only bettered by three Hampshire Men scores and Australia Men at Utilita Bowl, and eclipsed the previous 197-run high in women’s matches at the ground.Lauren Winfield-Hill, on loan from Yorkshire, thumped 69 but couldn’t prevent Essex from falling to a 25-run defeat in front of 4378 spectators – a highest for a non-Hundred or international women’s match at the ground.Having been stuck in by Essex, it took four balls for the first boundary – McCaughan tickling around the corner – and for the following 19.2 overs the ball barely left the perimeter.Hampshire were without overseas Charli Knott due to visa issues, having left the country after the first Metro Bank One-Day Cup block.McCaughan was the initial trailblazer for the innings, with her off-side timing particularly strong, as Bouchier rotated the strike. But Bouchier ended the 78-run powerplay with three fours off both Kate Coppack and Eva Gray. Bouchier and McCaughan had strike-rates over 200 from the first six overs.Maddie Penna and Grace Scrivens slowed things for the two overs out of the powerplay, but only temporarily as the batters prioritised pushing runs over boundaries.Bouchier reached her half-century first in 31 balls, her 11th in T20s, before McCaughan reached the milestone for the second time in 28 deliveries.Bouchier then turned up the power. Boundaries flowed off her bat in 360 degrees, including a rarely seen switch hit. In her innings, she had more fours than dots, before adding to a huge six over the long midwicket rope. The first-wicket reached 158 runs, higher than any partnership during the Charlotte Edwards Cup era, before McCaughan was undone by a slower ball from Esmae MacGregor for a career-best 68.Bouchier fell one shy of her best of 93 when Scrivens bowled her, but the last four overs didn’t see a massive slowdown, as Freya Kemp’s first appearance of the summer returned 20 off 13, with Georgia Adams 22 off 13.Winfield-Hill copied Bouchier and McCaughan’s approach by thrashing a fifty in 26 balls but it couldn’t keep up with the required rate. Wickets fell regularly at the other end. Scrivens skied to mid-on, Lissy MacLeod pinged to long-on and Cordelia Griffiths picked out deep midwicket.Winfield-Hill was starved of boundaries out of the powerplay, and scored just one after reaching her half-century. The frustration caught up with her as she was excellently caught at short fine leg for 69.Australian Penna whacked a quartet of sixes over square in a scintillating 17-ball 38 but it wasn’t enough as she and Jo Gardner fell in the death overs, with Bex Tyson picking up 3 for 40.
Glasgow Rangers head coach Russell Martin is already feeling the heat of the Ibrox fire after only a month or so of competitive matches in charge of the club.
The Light Blues boss is managing away from Ibrox this evening, though, as his team looks to overcome a 3-1 deficit to qualify for the Champions League against Club Brugge.
Martin has won just three of his nine matches in charge of the club to date and the most recent clash with St Mirren did not do much to help his relationship with the fanbase.
The former Scotland international needed a deflected effort from distance from substitute Findlay Curtis to rescue a point for the team in the Scottish Premiership clash.
There were a number of players who put in concerning performances across the park in that draw, and it was not solely Martin’s system or tactics that were to blame.
Summer signing Emmanuel Fernandez started alongside John Souttar at the heart of the defence, with Nasser Djiga suspended, but question marks remain over his suitability for the team.
Why there are question marks over Emmanuel Fernandez
The Light Blues brought the English centre-back in from League One side Peterborough United for a fee of £3.5m, but it remains to be seen whether or not he has what it takes to be a regular starter for Martin.
Emmanuel Fernandez
In the draw with St Mirren, you could see the positives and negatives to his style of play. His towering frame meant that he was able to dominate the opposition forwards in physical contests, winning all seven of his aerial battles and five of his eight ground duels, per Sofascore.
However, he also appeared almost too relaxed and laid back at points, with opposition players able to get in behind him or get to balls first before a duel could even be contested.
That approach to defending and playing in possession may be why he was prone to the occasional error during his time at Peterborough in the third tier of English football last season.

As you can see in the table above, Fernandez was largely dominant in his duels on the ground and in the air, as you would expect from a centre-back with his physical attributes.
Two errors that led to shots or goals for the opposition and two red cards, in the third division against lower quality opposition, do not suggest that he is immediately ready to be a reliable figure for Rangers in big games in Europe or against Celtic.
Fernandez appears to have too many lapses in concentration at the moment, which was also the case when he switched off and allowed his forward to score from a yard out, uncontested, against Alloa Athletic in the League Cup earlier this month.
Rangers plotting move for Premier League defender
Supporters may, therefore, be pleased to learn that the club are reportedly keen on signing another defender who could come in as an instant upgrade on Fernandez.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers are interested in a deal to sign Bournemouth centre-back Chris Mepham to bolster their options at the heart of the defence.
The report claims that the Light Blues are preparing to make an offer to bring the Wales international up to Ibrox, as he only has one year left on his contract at the Vitality Stadium.
It adds that Mepham is surplus to requirements with Andoni Iraola’s Premier League side, and that the Cherries are ‘keen’ to move him on before the summer transfer window slams shut next week.
Bournemouth signed the Welsh titan for a fee of £12m from Brentford in 2019, but the report claims that the Gers could bid in an attempt to land a cut-price deal for the defender.
UPDATE: Fabrizio Romano has since reported that West Bromwich Albion are closing in on a deal to sign the defender after agreeing a fee with Bournemouth, which means that the Scottish giants are going to have to move incredibly quickly if they want to hijack this transfer.
Why Rangers should sign Chris Mepham
Rangers should be pushing to make sure that they can get a deal done for Mepham before the deadline next Monday because he could come in as an instant upgrade on Fernandez.
The 27-year-old star would arrive at Ibrox in the prime years of his career as a centre-back who can be expected to hit the ground running and deliver reliable performances from day one.
Mepham has only been sent off twice in over 200 matches at club level, including just once in the last four seasons, per Transfermarkt, and this shows that he may not be as rash or inexperienced as Fernandez, who saw red twice last season.
The Wales international also played domestic football in the division above the one that Fernandez played in during the 2024/25 campaign, earning promotion to the Premier League with Sunderland on loan, whilst the English defender failed to get promoted out of League One.

As you can see in the table above, the Black Cats loanee excelled in possession in Regis Le Bris’ side in the Championship, ranking highly in a host of metrics.
This suggests that he would be a good fit for what Rangers are trying to do because he has the passing ability from a centre-back position to find teammates in dangerous positions on a regular basis, potentially helping his side to break down low blocks more effectively than Rangers have done so far.
Chris Mepham in action for Sunderland.
Speaking about Mepham, Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil said: “But I have to give big credit to Chris Mepham as well. He’s been outstanding this season on and off the pitch. Off the pitch he’s brought the squad together like you wouldn’t believe.”
This speaks to both the quality of his performances and the kind of character and leadership that the centre-back could provide Rangers with. Given the poor start to the season and the growing frustration around the results, having an experienced leader like Mepham could be a real boost for Martin and the squad.
On top of his in-possession qualities and leadership skills, the Welsh colossus can also be a dominant presence at the back in the same way that Fernandez is, having won 59% of his duels in the Championship last term, per Sofascore.
Therefore, Rangers could land an instant upgrade on Fernandez by signing Mepham to provide the same level of physicality whilst offering more to the team in possession and as a leadership figure, with more reliable and consistent performances.
Rangers can land a better signing than Miovski with late move for £4m star
Rangers could find an even better signing than Bojan Miovski by landing this reported target.

Ashes rivals take two wickets each to seal five-overs-a-side contest
ECB Reporters Network via Rothesay05-Jul-2025Lancashire 55 for 2 (Lamb 21) beat Essex 47 for 7 (Cross 2-9, King 2-17) by eight wickets (DLS)Ashes rivals Kate Cross and Alana King equally shared four wickets to set Lancashire Thunder up for a convincing rain-affected Vitality Blast win over Essex Eagles at Emirates Old Trafford, keeping their Finals Day hopes alive.England seamer Cross and Australia legspinner King struck twice apiece in the space of 10 legitimate balls in the sixth and seventh overs of what turned out to be an eight-over Essex innings as they slipped to 38 for six and later totalled 47 for seven.A two-hour rain delay ravaged a fixture which both sides realistically needed to win to maintain hopes of a top-three finish, and it was Thunder who claimed the five points as they reeled in a revised 52-target in six overs thanks largely to opener Emma Lamb’s 21 off 17 balls.Thunder’s fourth win in nine games – this by eight wickets on DLS – means they leapfrog Essex into fifth place and are now 11 points behind third-placed Bears with five games left. Thunder face them in a crunch clash here tomorrow afternoon.Essex, meanwhile, lost for the sixth time in nine and have a mountain to climb.Thunder, who importantly won the toss and elected to bowl first, made a fast start with the ball either side of the two-hour delay from just after 11.20am.First of all, Essex reached 24 for two after five overs.Seamer Phoebe Graham was making her first competitive appearance of the summer for Thunder, and she struck in the fourth over when she uprooted the leg-stump off Lissy MacLeod as she aimed a heave across the line.Left-arm swing bowler Tara Norris then had the other Essex opener Lauren Winfield-Hill well caught low down at cover by Ailsa Lister following a miscue in the next. Only four more balls were bowled before play was halted. Then, upon the resumption, with an eight-overs per side game now in motion, Thunder struck four times in the first 10 legitimate balls back to all but end any realistic chance Essex had of winning, the visitors crumbling to 38 for six.King had compatriot Maddie Penna well caught low down at square-leg by Lister off a full toss before getting Cordelia Griffith caught behind cutting later in the sixth over.In the seventh, Cross uprooted Jo Gardner’s off-stump and had an attacking Eva Gray caught behind.Amara Carr was then run out off the final ball of the innings. Opener Winfield-Hill was the only Essex batter to reach double figures with 13.Eve Jones set Thunder on their way in the chase with an eye-catching straight driven boundary off Esmae MacGregor’s seam before dragging Gray’s seam to midwicket on 17 – 29 for one in the fourth.England’s Lamb hit three leg-side boundaries before being run out with only four runs required. While the Red Rose host the Bears tomorrow (1pm), Essex face league leaders Surrey at The Kia Oval (midday).

Leeds United have now opened talks over a deal for an “elite” striker, who is also being targeted by West Ham United, according to a report.
Leeds eyeing new striker amid Bamford and Joseph uncertainty
Leeds have already made one addition at centre-forward this summer, securing the signing of former Wolfsburg man Lukas Nmecha on a free transfer, but it is looking increasingly likely they will have to bring in at least one more striker.
That is because there are major doubts over the futures of Patrick Bamford and Mateo Joseph, with the former admitting he would be open to a move to the MLS, saying: “I think it’s something that, obviously over time I’ve spoke to Michaela [his wife] about it, in terms of playing abroad, and America being one of the options.
“It was something that when I was younger I always wanted to do at some point in my career, to kind of experience it, experience a new country, the living the lifestyle there and also trying myself in a new league.”
Joseph, on the other hand, has a more pressing desire to leave, having decided not to take part in the Whites’ pre-season training camp, with Daniel Farke adding: “He came to me, and to us, and said he wants a new challenge and would like to have a move.”
With two strikers potentially heading for the exit door, Leeds have now set their sights on a replacement, and a report from Italy (via Leeds United News) has revealed they have opened talks over a deal for AS Roma’s Artem Dovbyk.
Despite being a regular source of goals for Roma last season, the Italian club are not overly convinced by the 28-year-old, and they could sanction a departure this summer, should a potential suitor be willing to fork out £30m.

West Ham are also in the race for Dovbyk, having submitted an enquiry alongside the Whites, so Farke’s side may have to fend off competition from their Premier League rivals.
"Elite" Dovbyk could be upgrade on Bamford and Joseph
In many ways, it is a surprise that Roma don’t have too many qualms about selling the centre-forward this summer, given that he enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in Italy, amassing a combined 21 goals and assists in all competitions.

Bamford, on the other hand, has been unable to put his injury problems in the rear-view mirror, while Joseph found the back of the net just three times in the Championship last season, indicating the Ukrainian striker could be a real upgrade.
Having also been lauded as a “fantastic finisher” and “elite target man” by journalist Zach Lowy, there are clear signs that Dovbyk could be capable of firing Leeds to safety next season, so they should undoubtedly pursue a deal if Roma are willing to sell.
England captain named Player of the Match after putting himself through 24 overs in India’s second innings at Lord’s
ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jul-20252:32
Stokes: I was going to decide when I stop bowling
Ben Stokes, England’s captain, admitted he had taken himself to some “dark places” with his bowling workloads but said “nothing was stopping” him as he embarked on two lengthy spells to help drag his side to a 22-run victory over India on the final day at Lord’s.Stokes was named Player of the Match after taking five wickets across 44 overs – the third-most he has bowled in a Test, and the most since 2019 – to go with innings of 44 and 33 with the bat, as well as the crucial run-out of Rishabh Pant in India’s first innings. On the third evening, he received an instruction from England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, to call it quits after a seven-over spell, with the team management still wary about protecting Stokes’ fitness after hamstring surgery over the winter.Related

But he again pushed his body to the limit on Monday, resuming his over from the previous evening and bowling a further 9.2 overs during the morning, which included the wicket of India opener KL Rahul. He followed up with a ten-over spell after lunch, eventually dislodging Jasprit Bumrah after a dogged 35-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja for the ninth wicket, as England sought to confirm victory and a 2-1 lead in the series. The Lord’s Test was also the second of back-to-back matches, with just a three-day turnaround from India’s win at Edgbaston, where Stokes bowled 26 overs. In the first Test, at Headingley, he sent down 35 overs and spoke afterwards about how hard it was to recover.”I have taken myself to some pretty dark places before. Today was… but look, bowling to win a Test match, if that doesn’t get you excited, I don’t know what does,” he said, speaking to Sky Sports at the post-match presentation.”With what today was, what was on the line. Yesterday [Saturday] was a bit different. You know, there was still more cricket to be played. And, you know, pulled myself off there. I mean, to be honest, I was absolutely cooked [on day three] as well. But again, today, you know, game was on the line. Nothing was stopping me [carrying on].”Ben Stokes appeals for KL Rahul’s wicket•Getty Images
Although Stokes hinted at a return to form with the bat, Lord’s extended his run without a Test fifty to ten innings. He is now averaging 29.18 in 20 Tests since his last hundred, at Lord’s during the 2023 Ashes, but said that his ability to impact games with the ball meant he had little time to dwell on his batting returns.”I’m an allrounder. I get four opportunities in a Test match to be able to influence the game. And one of the great things about being an allrounder is that if one thing doesn’t quite click, you’ve got an opportunity with the other. And that’s how I look at it.”Obviously, I would like to be scoring more runs at the moment, but as soon as I’ve got my whites on out there on the field, all my thoughts flip over to bowling. And that’s the great thing about being an allrounder, that you don’t really have a chance to sort of worry about anything. And everyone knows, I’ll always put in as much as I possibly can.”Jofra Archer took two crucial wickets in his opening spell•Getty Images
Stokes offered particular praise for Jofra Archer, playing in his first Test since 2021. Archer claimed match figures of 5 for 105 in a display of sustained hostility that regularly pushed the speed gun above 90mph/145kph. On day five, six years on from his heroics in the ODI World Cup final, he made the first breakthrough with the key wicket of Pant, and Stokes said he had backed Archer to do something special.”Yeah, part of the reason I went with Jof this morning, six years ago now to the day. He played a major role and I had a feeling he’d do something special and crack the game open. A bit of discussion, Brydon [Carse] had an amazing spell [last night], but I had a gut feeling that Jof’s going to do something in his first game back.”Speaking afterwards to Sky, Archer said that the long periods he experienced in rehab due to back and elbow problems between 2021 and 2024 were made all the more worthwhile by the taste of victory at Lord’s.As well as his involvement in the World Cup final, when he bowled the Super Over as England’s men lifted the trophy for the first time, Archer made his Test debut on the ground during the 2019 Ashes. However, he had not played a Test since February 2021 before his comeback against India, enduring a four-year absence from red-ball cricket while road-testing his body in the limited-overs formats.0:55
Manjrekar: Stokes always makes things happen
“I only played one other Test at Lord’s, but you know, the last one was just as special as this one,” Archer said. “A lot of rehab, a lot of training, but it’s moments like this that make everything worth it.”I feel the hardest part is playing cricket for the last year-and-a-half and then still having training, talking about workloads, and ‘bowl today, don’t bowl tomorrow’, stuff like that. That would probably be the hardest part, because some days you think that you’re ready, but you never know if you’re ready or not until you do it. But the safer way is the best way. So I’m not too fussed. This surely, surely is worth it.”On day two, Archer struck with his third ball on returning to the Test side, having India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal caught at second slip, and celebrated by sprinting away to square leg, where he was enveloped by his team-mates.”Guess I was a little bit emotional,” he said. “It was a long journey. I can’t tell you the amount of keyboard warriors that I had to put up with for the last three to four years as well. I told myself that I was going to try my best not to be [emotional] and when [Jaiswal] nicked it, and it went to Brooky [Harry Brook], I think all of that just went through the window. The joy, the whole crowd, the Long Room yesterday, I’ve never seen it like that ever in my life. So it’s just moments like this that made the rehab all so much worth it.”Archer also revealed what was behind his send-off for Pant on the final day, having removed the batter’s off stump from the ground. “It wasn’t a proud moment,” he said. “I just told him to charge that. Honestly, this morning, I was struggling a little bit, the ball just kept coming out full. One of the full ones, he just charged, and it p****d me off a bit. When the [wicket] ball nipped down the slope, honestly I was so grateful for that.”
da realsbet: With the frantic transfer window now over and done with, and the opening set of Premier League fixtures finished, Sunderland will appreciate this downtime for the international break.
da bet7: Indeed, Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats have headed into this mini break with a promising two top-flight victories already picked up, as the whole host of new signings gifted to the Frenchman over a lengthy summer largely impressed.
Therefore, a moment of rest could do the Wearside outfit the world of good, ahead of the fixtures coming thick and fast again, with a trip to Crystal Palace awaiting them next weekend.
Brian Brobbey will no doubt be clamouring for some action at Selhurst Park, having sealed a deadline day move from Ajax to the Stadium of Light to bolster the Black Cats up top, and steal the limelight momentarily as another statement buy at the £21.6m mark.
In a window that saw Sunderland regularly splash cash excessively, deadline day was no exception for the ambitious Premier League new boys.
Brobbey would go down as the Black Cats’ second most costly purchase of the summer, with pressure now on the Dutchman’s shoulders to live up to the hype that once saw him be dubbed a “goal machine” by scout Jacek Kulig.
From 284 career appearances both in the senior side at the Johan Cruyff Arena and on the youth pitches, the lively 23-year-old has a ridiculous 141 strikes next to his name, with Marc Guiu’s surprise return to Chelsea in the final few days of the window not hurting so much after the late capture of Brobbey was unveiled.
He wasn’t the most expensive capture, however, with that crown being handed to Habib Diarra far earlier in the summer, when he broke Sunderland’s transfer record at the £30m region.
The ex-RC Strasbourg ace has since featured in all four of Sunderland’s competitive games so far this season, with a calm 83% pass accuracy averaged in the Premier League.
Diarra will be hoping he can pick up goals and assists for fun soon, as he grows more used to the testing environment of the English top-flight.
On top of that, one of the Senegal international’s new teammates in the middle will also be praying for more first-team opportunities to come his way, as he staggeringly boasts an even heftier price tag than both the expensive 21-year-old and Brobbey.
Sunderland star looking to outshine Brobbey & Diarra
Le Bris will have plenty of selection headaches to contend with over the course of the season, off the back of a mammoth 15 fresh signings entering the swollen Sunderland ranks this summer.
With the arrival of the £30m-rated Diarra to the building, it has seen the likes of Chris Rigg struggle for gametime early on this campaign, despite the 18-year-old being heralded as a presence that will “obviously play in the Premier League” by commentator Ian Darke last year, after consistently shining bright for Le Bris and Co in their hunt for promotion glory.
Having made his senior debut at just 15, the wide-eyed Rigg has always punched above his weight and shown that he belongs in the taxing environments sprung onto him, with four goals and one assist coming his way last season to help his side achieve promotion.
Unfortunately, with the wide array of talent at Le Bris’ disposal now, the teenage sensation has only been limited to one meagre minute of Premier League action to date.

However, Sunderland will still be very aware of how much a prized asset Rigg is, having tied him down to a new contract until 2030 recently, amid previous interest in his services from the likes of Manchester United.
Even Real Madrid are allegedly keeping a close eye on the 18-year-old, with the big bucks needing to be splashed to obtain such a “phenomenal” talent, as he has been lauded by analyst Ben Mattinson.

While Black Cats fans far and wide will no doubt bask in the number of standout signings their side has made this summer, they will gain even more joy from Rigg’s sharp rise from academy prospect to first-team regular, with the England U19 international now rumoured to be valued around the £40m mark.
That’s amazingly more than Brobbey’s £21.6m valuation, on top of trumping Diarra’s much-talked-about £30m price by £10m.

For the Wearside outfit’s sake, they will hope they don’t fall victim to another Jobe Bellingham-style sale anytime soon, though, with Rigg surely only getting better at his hometown club if more minutes are afforded to him across the 35-game league marathon to follow.
