Rashford, who joined United’s youth system at the tender age of seven, has admitted it may be time to move on from the club after he was left out of the squad for United’s 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the derby. The timing of the statement was unexpected, as United officials reportedly had little idea that the academy graduate desires “new steps” in his career and is contemplating a future away from Old Trafford.

    WHAT AMORIM SAID

Amorim faced an intense media grilling on Wednesday during a press conference ahead of United’s League Cup quarter-final clash against Tottenham. The manager addressed 16 questions about Rashford’s future and in his responses, he made it clear that the comments were not well received.

"If this was me, probably I would speak with the manager," Amorim told reporters. "But guys, let’s focus on Tottenham!"

The former Sporting manager also clarified that his comment on focussing on every detail was misinterpreted by the media.

"What I expect is every day all the players doing the training and outside the training, the engagement with the players," he said.

"I talk about the way they dress, I was just making a point. I don’t know how they dress, I just see them in the kit. I don’t know how they eat, I’m not looking at their plates, it was just to make a point.

"I don’t care how my players dress, it was to make a focus on the detail. I expect the best of each one of them to prepare the game. If that’s what we’re doing to try to demonstrate to the players, the rest we will have time to address and my focus is on the game and get the best out of Marcus."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Amorim admitted that managing the fallout from Rashford’s comments has been challenging. He was yet to sit down with the forward after his controversial comments as Rashford did not train Monday due to illness and Tuesday was day off for the players.

"It’s hard to explain to you guys what I am going to do. I’m a little bit emotional so in the moment I will decide what to do," Amorim said. "My focus now is on the players, they still need to arrive at Carrington so I need to prepare the game and then we will see. Let’s focus on the team not individual players. That’s it.

"It’s a hard situation to comment. If I give a lot of importance it will have big headlines in the papers and if I say it’s not a problem then my standards are getting low! So I will deal with that, I understand that. My focus is to not take the attention away from the game and the team and what we did in the last game. What I’m saying is that the team is more important than the individual, we will assess it at the right time, that’s all."

Despite the situation, Amorim reiterated his belief in Rashford’s potential, stating, “Nothing has changed, we believe in Marcus. Marcus is a player of Manchester United so there’s no change."

    WHAT NEXT?

While Rashford’s absence continues to raise eyebrows, Alejandro Garnacho has rejoined the squad for the Carabao Cup tie against Tottenham. The young Argentinian travelled with the team to London, signalling a potential role in Thursday’s quarter-final. Rashford, on the other hand, was notably absent from the squad, further fuelling speculation about his immediate future.

Rangers hit gold on star who’s worth 4x more than Tavernier in 2024 money

Glasgow Rangers captain James Tavernier has endured a difficult start to the 2024/25 campaign for the Ibrox side.

The defender looks a shadow of his former self, with his struggles compounded by another poor Old Firm display against Celtic on the weekend, as they strolled to a 3-0 victory.

Daizen Maeda got the better of him once again, using his pace down the right-hand side to terrorise the Englishman. Could his time at the club be coming to an end?

James Tavernier’s future at Rangers

Tavernier’s future was up in arms during the summer transfer window, as several clubs were looking to lure him away from Ibrox, with interest coming from former Rangers managers Steven Gerrard and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, in charge of Al-Ettifaq and Besiktas respectively.

No move materialised before the transfer deadline, yet journalist Graeme Bailey has provided a fresh update surrounding his future, saying: “Exclusive – James Tavernier offered Rangers exit route following Old Firm abuse. Clubs in Turkey and Qatar ready to make moves.”

Could this see the 32-year-old make an unlikely move away from the Gers sooner rather than later? Or will he remain at the club until the end of his current contract?

James Tavernier’s season in numbers so far

Last year, the Englishman scored a career-high best of 24 goals throughout the campaign, while also registering 12 assists in all competitions.

This made him the highest scorer in the squad, yet despite this incredible individual season for the club, they could only win the League Cup as Tavernier’s mentality came into question during the latter months of the season.

Rangers had excellent chances to win the Scottish Cup and Premiership title, but suffered damaging losses to Celtic, Ross County and Motherwell during the run-in.

This lethargy has carried into the current season, with Tavernier failing to really inspire his teammates thus far, winning just three of their opening seven games of the campaign.

Tavernier has failed to score a single goal during these games, while registering just two assists in the process, as his attacking output has dropped significantly from last term.

The right-back has managed to create three big chances while averaging 2.5 key passes per game in the top flight, but those appear to be wasted by those playing in front of him.

He could well be on the wane as a player, especially with his output in front of goal dipping dramatically. This could see Clement having to make a decision on his future sooner rather than later, as January could represent the final chance for the Gers to sell him for a decent fee.

Whatever happens, he has been a wonderful servant to the club, but it looks as though the end is nigh, and it is time for the Light Blues to cash in.

James Tavernier

Hopefully, a solid transfer fee is received, similar to the sort that Walter Smith managed to wrangle for defender Alan Hutton back in 2008.

How much Rangers sold Alan Hutton for in 2024 money

Following a stunning start to the 2007/08 season which saw Rangers perform well in both Europe and domestically, Hutton soon became a transfer target for Premier League clubs.

Alan Hutton

Towards the end of the January transfer window, Smith accepted Tottenham Hotspur’s £9m offer to take the defender down south, representing a sensational profit considering he emerged through the youth ranks at Ibrox.

This fee was clearly too good to turn down, allowing Smith to bolster his squad during the summer of 2008 as he ramped up for a tilt at the league title that season.

In 2024, money, however – with Totally Money having adjusted for inflation over the years – this £9m transfer fee would be worth a staggering £29.8m if he made the same move just now.

This transfer fee is currently over four times more than what Tavernier is worth at the time of writing. According to Transfermarkt, the captain’s market value is currently standing at €6.5m (£5.5m), clearly demonstrating how much the club hit the jackpot by moving on Hutton when they did.

If Clement can get anywhere near the fee Hutton was sold for, then he would be doing extremely well, no doubt about that.

Alan Hutton’s Rangers statistics

The right-back made his debut during the 2002/03 season for the Light Blues, before gaining more of a chance in the next campaign under Alex McLeish, although it was a poor one for the Ibrox side, who finished trophyless.

The 2004/05 campaign saw Hutton establish himself as the main right-back during the first half of the season, but a leg break against Kilmarnock in February 2005 meant he didn’t play a part in either the League Cup final or the title run-in.

Alan Hutton

Once he recovered, he made a total of 90 appearances for the club before Spurs came calling in 2008, leaving after making more than 100 competitive appearances for the Light Blues since making his debut in 2002.

He was praised highly by former assistant coach Ally McCoist, who said of the defender: “I have no doubt Alan is destined for great things but I believe those great things can be with Rangers. We don’t want to lose players of his quality.”

Unfortunately, barring a rare occurrence, selling players for this type of fee has hardly been done since Hutton departed all those years ago.

While Tavernier is approaching 33, his statistics over the previous few years should mean Clement can place a decent valuation on his head if any clubs continue to sniff around the captain.

Whatever happens, Tavernier must improve his performances between now and the start of 2025, otherwise he could even be dropped by the management team should these poor displays persist over the coming weeks.

Russell Martin’s side are yet to pick up a single top flight point, losing to Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Brentford and Manchester United. The Saints have only scored one league goal, however, they are into the Carabao Cup last 16 after a penalty shootout win over Everton.

Talking after that win, Martin said: “I saw so much character, spirit, fight and togetherness and the game looked how we wanted it to look, apart from a few moments where we wanted a bit more attacking intent.

“I was really pleased with a lot of the performances and the way we reacted to conceding. I’m delighted for the players – they were brave and aggressive. I’m so excited about what’s to come. We just need that first win [in the Premier League] and everyone will relax a bit. I’ve got no doubt they will continue to grow.”

Away from the pitch, it looks as if the club may soon have some positive contract news to shout about.

Southampton contract update – Tyler Dibling

Southampton youngster Tyler Dibling has recently caught the eye on the pitch, being dubbed the “next big thing” after his impressive displays off the bench so far this season.

Now, according to GiveMeSport, those cameo performances have been catching the eye of numerous clubs, with Manchester United, Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Stuttgart all eyeing moves for the 18-year-old.

Fortunately for Saints supporters, GMS have revealed that Dibling is expected to sign a new contract with Southampton. They claim that ‘Southampton have secured a significant boost in their attempts to tie Dibling down to an extended deal as he is increasingly likely to sign on the dotted line due to enjoying his football on the south coast, but all parties are not in a rush to thrash out negotiations because he is already healthily contracted’.

They look set to reward Dibling, who is enjoying working under Martin at St Mary’s, with a pay raise. Martin also appears to be enjoying working with the teenager, saying: “I think the biggest thing I can say is if he’s playing it tells you what we feel about him at 18 years old. The stuff that he can do that we trust him with. Tyler from now to looking back even three months ago is a very different person and the growth in him has been huge.”

Gardner's maturity helps her make history with top award

Ashleigh Gardner’s increased maturity has paved the way for her to become the first Indigenous player to claim one of Australian cricket’s top honours.Gardner, 24, was on Saturday named winner of the Belinda Clark Award, crowning her as Australia’s best female player for the past 12 months. The offspinning allrounder was told by Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley of her award on Friday night, admitting she asked him more than once if he had the right person. But Gardner’s growth over the past year means she is a more than deserving recipient. She found consistency in 2021, going from a big hitter to solid performer with 281 runs at 35.10 across all formats in the past year. She scored four half-centuries in that time, highlighted by an unbeaten 73 in a successful T20I chase in New Zealand in March.Related

Gardner also produced her maiden Test half-century, against India, before backing it up against England in the Ashes match in Canberra – although the latter match came outside of the award voting period.Adding to Gardner’s improvement, she was in the team’s top-five run-scorers and top-three wicket-takers in each of the three formats.”I’ve certainly grown up both on and off the field,” Gardner said. “I think maturing off the field probably has an impact on my game on the field. I feel really comfortable within this side.”I’ve known what my role has been and I’ve been really clear in the direction that I need to do with either bat or ball in hand.”Gardner’s maturity has also been most evident in her bounce back in recent months. While her international success has been clear, her underwhelming WBBL with Sydney Sixers – which included a run of four consecutive ducks – left her battling mentally and needing time out after months in bubbles. She made the point to see Australia’s sports psychologist, took a few weeks out and then rebounded with a first-innings 56 and 1 for 27 with the ball in the current Test against England.”You can find yourself in some pretty dark places when you aren’t in the best form. And that was certainly me,” Gardner said. “I can openly admit that my mental health probably wasn’t great.”But I think it’s good for people’s careers to go on that slight decline to then actually find the confidence again and find the rhythm back in your batting.”Being able to go back into the [NSW] Breakers set up around a different bunch of girls was really instrumental to actually feel confident again. As soon as I got back into this [Australian] set-up, it was full faith that I would get back to where I wanted to be.”Gardner picked up 54 votes to finish clear of T20 player-of-the-year Beth Mooney (47) and ODI recipient Alyssa Healy (39).

Arne Slot speaks out on Trent Alexander Arnold's nightmare display vs Man Utd amid intensifying Real Madrid transfer talk

Manchester United were able to take a point away from Anfield thanks to goals from Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo, which cancelled out Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah's efforts for Liverpool. However, the key player in focus through the clash was Alexander-Arnold, who made a number of key mistakes, including setting the Red Devils up for a four-on-two counter late on, which prompted a fierce stare of disapproval from Reds captain Virgil van Dijk. Slot spoke out on Alexander-Arnold's performance in front of the media, and insisted he was not affected by the intensifying speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT SLOT SAID

Slot said: "I don't believe in those things. I think nine out of 10 people will tell you that it affected him, but I'm one of the 10 that tells you I don't think that affected him.

"What I think affected him was that he had to play Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot who are two starters for Portugal, great, great players. We have a fantastic player here in Diogo Jota and he's not even playing for Portugal, so that tells you how much quality United have. And if these players set themselves to a game, and that is what United once in a while does, then it's very difficult to play against them.

"I think it is more difficult for Trent to play against Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot than it is the rumours that were there in the week. That's my opinion, but everyone will probably tell you it's to do with the rumours."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Talking further about Alexander-Arnold's performance, Slot added: "It was clear Trent had some difficult moments as we as a team had but that is also for Trent not the first time. I think the majority of games he has played for this club he was very, very good but I can't believe if people tell me he's never played a bad game for this club, so that's probably happened before and mostly against quality players like United have."

The Liverpool right-back is unlikely to leave Liverpool in January despite the reports suggesting Real Madrid are interested in completing the signing this month. Alexander-Arnold will be expected to start again when the Reds take on Tottenham in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Yorkshire agree Lahore Qalandars partnership in bid to 'reduce barriers to entry'

Haris Rauf will join the county in 2022 as part of a player exchange programme

Matt Roller21-Dec-2021Yorkshire have unveiled a partnership with Lahore Qalandars, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise, which will aim to “nurture talent [by] reducing barriers to entry” following the racism crisis which has engulfed the county. The most pertinent part of the partnership is Yorkshire’s intention to “learn from and emulate” the Qalandars’ players development program (PDP), which provides opportunities to over 150 young players annually and aims to unearth new talent regardless of background.Haris Rauf, who has won 42 caps for Pakistan since attending Qalandars trials in 2017 and bowling with a leather ball for the first time, has been the PDP’s poster boy, and the partnership will see him join Yorkshire as an overseas player for “a period of the 2022 season”.It will also see two teams play a friendly game at Gaddafi Stadium on January 16, academy players given opportunities to train overseas, and scholarships for aspiring players from both Yorkshire and Lahore as part of an exchange programme. Harry Brook, Yorkshire’s brightest young talent, was signed by the Qalandars in last week’s PSL draft.Related

The partnership represents a significant step in Lord Kamlesh Patel’s attempts to rebuild Yorkshire following his appointment as chair, which came about after Roger Hutton resigned in light of Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of institutional racism at the club and the handling of the report into them.Among his first moves was the decision to sack the club’s entire coaching staff as part of a major overhaul which saw 16 people removed from their roles, with Darren Gough later appointed as interim director of cricket.Yorkshire have advertised for the head coach, assistant coach, 2nd XI coach and academy coach roles in the last week, as well as inviting applications for up to six new non-executive directors “who are representative of the communities the club serves [and] are committed to the board’s aim to tackle discrimination and racism”.Yorkshire’s first-team squad contains only one non-white player – Adil Rashid, who is rarely available to play for the county due to his status as a centrally-contracted England player – and Lord Patel said that the partnership would help create a club “that is welcoming and supportive to all”.”The work the Lahore Qalandars do both on and off the pitch is remarkable and can serve as a benchmark for clubs around the world – ours included – for how best to spot, foster and support talent at all levels in the game of cricket,” Lord Patel said.”The Players Development Program is an incredible achievement – breaking the mould for how teams can be created within our sport, and demonstrating that through offering access and support, great cricketing talent can be found from all backgrounds.”Haris Rauf was first spotted at Lahore Qalandars’ open trials in 2017•Lahore QalandarsThe Qalandars already have similar partnerships with other clubs, most notably Melbourne Stars in Australia’s Big Bash League where Rauf, Dilbar Hussain, Syed Faridoun and Ahmed Daniyal have all been given opportunities in recent seasons.Rauf will be playing county cricket for the first time after agreeing to join the club and will be their first Asian overseas player since Cheteshwar Pujara in 2018, whose nickname ‘Steve’ came under scrutiny during Rafiq’s testimony to a parliamentary select committee in October.Gough said he was “thrilled” to have signed an “exceptionally talented” bowler in Rauf and that he hoped the partnership would widen access. “I have spoken in the past about my passion for developing accessible pathways to cricket,” he said.”For many people from a background like mine, cricket isn’t seen as an option, with the associated costs and access to facilities creating real barriers to entry. This partnership is an opportunity to take the blueprint the Qalandars have developed to such a success and work with them to define how that can be used to provide access for potential players from across Yorkshire.”

South Africa's red-ball players to choose IPL over Bangladesh Tests

South Africa are likely to field a weakened squad for the two home Tests against Bangladesh starting March 18, with all their Test players part of various franchises choosing to go to the IPL.ESPNcricinfo understands the players’ decision to prefer the IPL over the two Tests was unanimous. Earlier this month, in what was termed by Test captain Dean Elgar as a “litmus test of loyalty”, Cricket South Africa (CSA) allowed the players choose between the IPL and their Test commitments against Bangladesh.According to an agreement between the two boards, CSA has historically provided their players with NOCs to participate in the IPL and have not organised fixtures at the same time. This year is different, with an expanded IPL and an autumn series against Bangladesh.”The original agreement with the BCCI was that we would release our players for the IPL. But the IPL window has gotten bigger, and our agreement remains the same,” an insider told ESPNcricinfo. This means South Africa will be without their entire front-line seam attack against Bangladesh. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi are contracted to the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals, respectively, while Marco Jansen, the left-arm seamer who broke through during South Africa’s victorious home series against India late last year, is set to play for Sunrisers Hyderabad.Meanwhile, Anrich Nortje is most certainly out of the Bangladesh Tests due to injury, and the mystery over his IPL availability continues. Nortje last played first-class cricket on the tour of the Caribbean in July last year and is said to be suffering from a longstanding back and hip issue. Nortje, who has emerged as a key weapon for the Capitals, is set to be assessed by the franchise’s medical staff. The unavailability of their front-line pacemen means Lutho Sipamla and Lizaad Williams are set to be part of the seam attack under consideration, along with Keshav Maharaj, the frontline spinner. Sipamla is three Tests old, having most recently featured in South Africa’s famous win over New Zealand in Christchurch last month. Williams, meanwhile, is uncapped in the Test arena, but has played a solitary ODI and six T20Is.The selectors will also look towards a spin-bowling allrounder. This means George Linde could come into consideration. Linde was earlier said to miss the series owing to county commitments in the UK, but has now confirmed his availability, as will Duanne Olivier, the fast bowler. Beauran Hendricks, the left-arm seamer, who was in line to be picked will miss out as he’s likely to head over to the UK for the start of the county season. All the Test specialists are understood to have had a meeting with Mark Boucher, the head coach, with efforts being made to convince them to prioritise the Tests before heading over to India. There is an indication that some, including Rabada, could be persuaded to stay for at least the first Test. However, it is more likely that the players will continue to the IPL.GMT 1550 The story initially misidentified Kagiso Rabada’s IPL franchise. The error has been fixed.

"Talented" £40,000-p/w Crystal Palace ace won’t play for "several weeks"

In a frustrating blow for Oliver Glasner, he will be without one Crystal Palace player for “several weeks” ahead of games against QPR, Manchester United and Everton.

Crystal Palace injury news

Those at Selhurst Park were already without summer signing Trevoh Chalobah against Leicester City, with Glasner confirming his muscle injury which could yet see the Chelsea loanee miss multiple games. The timing couldn’t be worse for the defender, who is in desperate need of minutes after being cast aside at Stamford Bridge and eventually sealing a late move to Palace.

Both Palace and Chalobah will hope that his early injury isn’t a sign of things to come. The last thing that the Chelsea man needs is for things to not work out on loan after enduring a difficult few months at his boyhood club.

He’s not the only one currently sidelined either. Glasner confirmed that Matheus Franca will still be out for “several weeks” as he continues to work his way back from a groin injury suffered last season which required surgery.

The Palace boss told reporters via London News Online: “At the end of the season, he had surgery, and his last game was coming on against Tottenham for the last 15 minutes – months ago. “He’s still not training with the team, so he will need team and football training. He will have all of our support. But it will take several weeks.”

Just 20 years old, Franca will be desperate for a return as soon as possible in the hope of finally making an impact on the current Palace side.

Palace need to be patient with "talented" Franca

Since arriving last summer, Franca has struggled to really make an impact at Selhurst Park, with last season’s injury hardly helping under new boss Glasner. With surgery completed and an eventual return set, however, the Brazilian will get the opportunity to finally establish himself in the Premier League. But Palace must show patience in a player who U23 scout Antonio Mango dubbed “talented” last year.

Without Michael Olise, who swapped Palace for Bayern Munich in the summer, Franca, who earns a reported £40k-a-week, may even set the course to become a key player under Glasner and become the unexpected replacement for the impressive Frenchman.

A young player full of potential, Franca will be frustrated with his injury setback, but the future should still be bright if Palace remain patient and eventually welcome the Brazilian back into their side. Once those “several weeks” have passed, Franca will be one to watch.
