Khaled Mahmud slams Mustafizur for shunning Test duties: 'No excuses anymore'

Bangladesh team director feels that the players shouldn’t be allowed to pick and choose the formats as they wish

Mohammad Isam07-May-2022Khaled Mahmud, the Bangladesh team director, feels Mustafizur Rahman should not have been allowed to pick and choose the formats he wished to play, as it has led to a fast-bowling vacuum in the Test side. Mustafizur is currently playing in the IPL for Delhi Capitals, having taken eight wickets in as many matches this season.Ahead of this year’s IPL, the BCB gave Mustafizur the clearance to play in the tournament even when Bangladesh were playing Tests in South Africa. It wasn’t a topic of particular interest at the time because Bangladesh had already won the ODI series, and they still had Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam around. While there has been debate about who decides on the format, the BCB president Nazmul Hassan has been saying since mid-2021 that the centrally contracted Bangladesh players will be allowed to pick and choose their formats, regardless of their experience. It started as a verbal promise last year, and the players have since signed the 2022 contracts by providing their choice of format in some cases. Mustafizur was given the IPL No Objection Certificate (NOC) this season after the Bangladesh selectors didn’t pick him in the squads for the South Africa and Sri Lanka Tests. Mustafizur has not played a Test since February last year, having taken just four wickets in the last four years.”(BCB president Nazmul Hassan) Papon said that the players can discuss which format they want to play but this was only applicable to the senior players, not all players,” Mahmud said in a press briefing at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Saturday.”Would it be okay if (Mahmudul Hasan) Joy said that he doesn’t want to play Tests? How old is Mustafiz? How long has he been playing for? He is not Shakib, Tamim, Mashrafe or Mushfiq. These players have provided service for many years. I don’t know why Mustafiz doesn’t want to play Tests. The board should decide which format a player plays.”Shakib and Tamim are 34-35 years old. They deserve breaks. But Litton Das doesn’t need breaks. When he becomes Shakib or Tamim, I will say that he deserves rest. Mustafiz must play Tests. It is his peak time. I am not saying he should play all the Tests but he should definitely be available for six to eight matches per year. I used to hear that he doesn’t want to play due to bio-bubbles, but now things have changed so that can’t be an excuse anymore. If Taskin and Shoriful can play (Tests), he should too.”Capitals are currently just outside the top four with four games remaining in the league stage, so Mustafizur will be available for them till May 21 at the very least. There’s still no movement from the BCB or the selectors to bring him into the Test side, but Mahmud said that with Taskin Ahmed already out of the Sri Lanka series due to a shoulder injury and Shoriful Islam’s availability still subject to a fitness test, the home side are missing out on their best bowler, regardless of the format.”With Taskin injured, one of our main bowlers is out. Shoriful could be injured any time soon. Both Taskin and Shoriful are injury-prone bowlers. In that case we need Mustafiz who, when you consider his experience, skills, technique and tactics, is Bangladesh’s best fast bowler. Mustafiz would have provided balance to the side.”There’s a lot of cricket in the three formats so everyone needs time off. Taskin and Shoriful also deserve rest. When we have enough bowlers, we probably won’t need Mustafiz in this format but till then he should provide support. He is dangerous in white-ball cricket but I also know that he can be a handful with the red ball too.”Mahmud came down strongly on Mustafizur’s commitment towards red-ball cricket and Bangladesh, but also felt that someone should have gotten in touch with him to clarify the situation.”He might get two or four crores in the IPL, but isn’t cricket bigger than the money? Isn’t the country bigger than money? We never played for money. Now a cricketer needs the BCB’s help when he is dying. (Mustafizur) won’t need the BCB (in that situation). They can themselves help others (financially). Why won’t I want to play for Bangladesh?”Cricket board means Mustafiz, and Mustafiz means the cricket board. They are both in the same place. There’s no distance. Maybe nobody spoke to him.”

India win fifth U-19 World Cup title after seamers Raj Bawa, Ravi Kumar prove too hot for England

James Rew’s 95 in vain while Shaik Rasheed, Nishant Sindhu shine with the bat for India

Sreshth Shah05-Feb-2022It was India’s seamers, not spinners, who plotted England’s downfall in the Under-19 World Cup final as Raj Bawa and Ravi Kumar produced match-winning bowling performances to share nine wickets and dismiss their opponents for 189. Bawa’s 5 for 31 was the best bowling performance in an U-19 World Cup final, while Ravi finished with 4 for 34.Even though India won by only four wickets, they were always ahead in the chase. Shaik Rasheed hit a fifty, Nishant Sindhu finished unbeaten on 50, too, and Bawa made a crucial 35. And as it is often the case with Indians at World Cup finals, it was a wicketkeeper who hit a six to seal the title.Although England struck with wickets that prevented India from posting big partnerships, the modest target of 190 put very little pressure on them. That England even reached 189 was courtesy James Rew’s valiant 95, which rescued them from 91 for 7 after Tom Prest chose to bat at the toss.England’s troubles started early when Ravi found movement in the morning, assisted in part by overnight rain in Antigua. He had Jacob Bethell lbw with a full ball in the second over and then had Prest chopping an attempted pull onto his stumps.George Thomas, who scored a half-century in the semi-final against Afghanistan, attacked right-arm seamer Rajvardhan Hangargekar from the other end, smacking him for a 16-run over, only to fall for 27 off 30 when Bawa came on as first change. Bawa pitched the ball up, and Thomas tried to mow one across the line only to miscue a skier to cover.Rew and William Luxton were left with the task of starting England’s recovery, but they could last only 16 balls together as Bawa struck twice in consecutive deliveries. He found extra bounce with a wide-ish ball, and Luxton went chasing only to edge it to the wicketkeeper Dinesh Bana. George Bell was gone for a duck when Bawa welcomed him with a short ball, and all he could do was glove it to Bana trying to block off the back foot. From 45 for 5, England were soon 91 for 7 following the wickets of Rehan Ahmed, caught at slip off Bawa, and Alex Horton, who dragged offspinner Kaushal Tambe to midwicket.Tournament Honour Roll

With England heading towards a sub-120 total, it was left to Rew, the last recognised batter, to drag them to something approaching a competitive total. He joined hands with No. 9 James Sales and added 93, with Rew the attacker in the partnership, increasing his tempo as England steadily edged towards 200. Even Vicky Ostwal, the economical left-arm spinner, went for 5.16 per over as Rew pulled him or launched him over midwicket. As England went past 180, a chase of 225-240 seemed on the cards.Raj Bawa leads a happy Indian team off the field after taking a five-for•ICC/Getty ImagesBut on 95, Rew pulled a harmless Ravi delivery to a fumbling, tumbling, juggling Tambe at deep midwicket before Thomas Aspinwall became Ravi’s fourth victim three balls later. From the other end, Bawa combined with Bana once more to secure his five-wicket haul, and England left 31 balls unused, all out for 189 in 44.5 overs. The consistent left-arm swing bowler Josh Boyden lifted England early in the chase when he had the in-form Angkrish Raghuvanshi caught behind for a duck, but neither Boyden nor the other seamers could make further breakthroughs despite accumulating dot balls. With Harnoor Singh and Rasheed happy to bide their time, it was a waiting game for England as they looked for the error. That finally came in the 18th over, with the score at 49 for 1, when Harnoor gloved a short ball from Aspinwall to the keeper. That brought the captain Yash Dhull together with his vice-captain Rasheed. They had put on a double-century stand in the semi-final against Australia and looked to attack England’s spinners. Rasheed used his wrists to flick off his pads and stood tall to crunch cuts and drives through the off side.Rasheed moved to fifty in the 27th over, but fell moments after, caught on the leg side after a wild heave off Sales. The same bowler then removed Dhull for 17 to give England a glimmer of hope as India lost their fourth wicket with the score on 97.Sindhu and Bawa, though, counterattacked. Bawa hit two sixes and one four while Sindhu went over cover and midwicket. Two catches inside the ring sent Bawa and Tambe packing before India could get over the line, and there were enough runs left for Sindhu to reach his half-century.He got to fifty in 54 balls, after which Bana wasted no time in finishing the contest. The first six went over deep square leg. The second one soared over long-on, and even before it landed, the camera panned towards the India players running in to celebrate.Bawa was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance. South Africa’s Dewald Brevis collected the Player-of-the-Tournament prize for his 506 runs. Dhull joined Mohammad Kaif, Virat Kohli, Unmukt Chand and Prithvi Shaw on the list of India captains to win the competition.

Rangers wanted Xavi Simons at Ibrox but Wilson signed a total flop instead

Glasgow Rangers head coach Philippe Clement is quickly learning how difficult it is to be a success at Ibrox, with the huge expectations that come along with the job.

The Belgian boss won a trophy early on in his career with Rangers, lifting the League Cup with a win over Aberdeen, but has failed to make his mark in the Scottish Premiership.

His Gers side finished three points adrift of Celtic at the end of the 2023/24 campaign and are currently five points behind their local rivals after just five matches.

Clement is not the first manager to fall short in the Premiership as winning the division is a feat that has not been achieved since Steven Gerrard moved on from Ibrox.

Former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

His replacement, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, did enjoy some success in the dugout, though, as the Dutchman won the SFA Cup and reached the final of the Europa League, only to lose on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Things could have been so different for the former Rangers player and manager if he had landed one of his reported transfer targets during his first season in charge at Ibrox – Xavi Simons.

Rangers' reported interest in Xavi Simons

It was reported ahead of the 2022 January transfer window that van Bronckhorst wanted to bring the attacking midfielder to Glasgow to bolster his midfield.

The young gem’s contract with French giants Paris Saint-Germain was due to expire at the end of the season and Rangers were ‘leading’ the race to secure his services in January.

He was free to sign a pre-contract deal with a foreign team at the turn of the year and it was claimed that the Gers head coach wanted to build his team around the PSG youngster.

Unfortunately, Rangers were unable to strike a deal for him during the January transfer window and the midfielder ran down his contract with the Ligue 1 side before signing for PSV on a free transfer in the summer of 2022.

The Dutch giants were seemingly able to convince the youngster that they were the best place for his future, rather than Ibrox, and landed his services.

This meant that van Bronckhorst and the sporting director at the time – Ross Wilson – had to dip back into the market to find an alternative to Simons ahead of the second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

Rangers were eventually able to land another attacking midfielder before the end of the January transfer window, as they snapped up Juventus flop Aaron Ramsey on loan.

Aaron Ramsey's Rangers struggles

The Scottish giants swooped to land the Wales international on loan until the end of the 2021/22 campaign and it was reported that they splashed out a fee of £2m to secure his services for just five months.

That was a sizeable fee to pay for a short-term loan but they were bringing in a player with over 400 appearances for Arsenal and Juventus combined.

Despite his vast experience at the top level in Europe, Ramsey endured a frustrating spell at Ibrox and only managed two goals and two assists in 13 appearances in his five months at the club.

Of the nine Europa League matches Rangers played during his time in Glasgow, the Welsh flop played 86 minutes across three outings and was an unused substitute in four games.

Ramsey did have a huge say in how the season ended for the Gers in that competition, however, as the midfielder came on with two minutes to go in the final against Frankfurt and was the only player to miss a penalty in the shoot-out, which lost the final for van Bronckhorst.

As you can see in the table above, the experienced dud did not provide exceptional performances in the Premiership in his limited time on the pitch, with a decent but unspectacular return of two goals in seven games.

Former Scotland forward Frank McAvennie claimed, after the Europa League final, that Ramsey was the latest “big name” that “couldn’t hack it” at one of the Glasgow clubs, which is backed up by the midfielder’s struggles during his time at Ibrox.

Meanwhile, the player van Bronckhorst wanted to sign before Ramsey arrived – Simons – has gone from strength to strength since that season.

Xavi Simons' current market value

As per Transfermarkt, the attacking midfielder’s current market value stands at around €80m (£67m) and that is a significant jump from the €1.5m (£1.2m) he was valued at in December 2021, around the time of the link to Rangers.

Simons produced a staggering 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 matches during his only season with PSV in the Netherlands, before PSG activated a buy-back clause as part of the compensation for losing him on a free the previous summer.

The French giants have subsequently sent him out on loan to German outfit RB Leipzig in the last two seasons, and the 21-year-old magician has thrived in the Bundesliga.

Simons, who has been capped 22 times by the Netherlands, has racked up 11 goals and 16 assists in 47 appearances in all competitions for Leipzig to date.

As you can see in the table above, the Dutch starlet provided a huge threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals for Leipzig in the Bundesliga last season.

Meanwhile, no Rangers player managed more than ten assists and no midfielder in the squad provided more than 1.7 key passes per game in the Premiership last term, which highlights how impressive Simons’ return in a major European league was in the 2023/24 campaign.

Ramsey’s huge struggles during his expensive loan spell at Ibrox and the Dutch wizard’s incredible rise, in performance and value, since Rangers wanted him suggests that Wilson may look back on that window with regret, as van Bronckhorst’s Rangers story could have ended differently had he landed his main target.

Super Kings dominate the numbers

A look at the season-wise comparisons, team-wise stats, and the best batsmen and bowlers in the Powerplay, middle, and slog overs

S Rajesh27-May-2013IPL 2013 started slowly in terms of run-scoring, but by the end it picked up sufficiently so that the overall numbers are pretty similar to what was achieved in the last few years. The run-rate picked up and ended at 7.67, only about two percent lower than last season’s rate, while the number of 50-plus scores was only one short of last season’s aggregate. The sixes count went down from 731 to 674 – a fall of 57 – but there were 140 more fours this time than last year. There were only four 200-plus scores this time, though, the least in an IPL season in India. This was also a season of minimal weather interruptions: only one match was played with a reduced number of overs, while none was washed out, unlike what had happened in the last two seasons. It was noticeable that teams didn’t bank so heavily on the Powerplay overs this time, choosing instead to wait for the last few overs to make their move. That’s reflected in the run rates as well: for the first time in six IPL seasons, the average Powerplay run rate dropped to less than seven runs per over – it was 6.93, compared to 7.22 last year. The scoring rate in the middle overs wasn’t too high either, but in the last five the rate increased to 9.57, which is the rate achieved in 2010, when the overall tournament run rate was 8.12. For teams batting first, the scoring rate in the last five was 10.16, well clear of last year’s 9.68 and 2011’s 9.36.The bowling was a mixed bag in 2013, and while there were some stand-out fast-bowling performances by Dale Steyn, Mitchell Johnson, James Faulkner and Lasith Malinga, among several others, overall spinners did better: they were more economical while averaging around the same. However, they bowled fewer overs than they had in the previous two seasons: compared to 1039.2 overs in 2011 and 1019.4 overs in 2012, spinners bowled only 856 overs in 2013.The main difference in the contribution from spinners was in the Powerplay overs. In the 2011 IPL, following on the success of spin with the new ball in the World Cup, they 1199 deliveries during the Powerplays, and next year it went up to 1266; this time, though, it came down to 902 balls.

Team-wise statsWhen a tournament has such a long league stage with each team playing 16 games, it isn’t necessary that the title winners are actually the side with the most wins over the entire tournament. However, this year Mumbai Indians, the champions, had a better win-loss ratio over the entire tournament than any other side. Coming into the final, they had a poorer win-loss ratio – 12 wins, 6 defeats – than their opponents in the final, Chennai Super Kings, who had a 12-5 record. However, the result in the final meant Mumbai Indians finished with a 13-6 record, while Super kings dropped to 12-6. Super Kings, though, had the better numbers than Mumbai Indians in each of the four key stats – batting average, run rate, bowling average and economy rate.Rajasthan Royals, who finished third, also had the third-best win-loss ratio, while Sunrisers Hyderabad, the fourth team to make the play-offs, were the only side among the top six with a poorer run-rate than economy rate.

The Powerplay starsSuper Kings had a solid top-order star in Michael Hussey throughout the tournament, and he was a huge factor in the team getting off to fine starts in most of their matches. Hussey’s consistency was outstanding: in only four out of 17 innings did he score less than 20, though one of them was unfortunately in the final. Hussey scored six fifties in the tournament, and all of them were in wins. In the 12 matches that Super Kings won, Hussey averaged 71.55 at a strike rate of 137; in the five games he played in which Super Kings lost, he averaged just 17.80, at a strike rate of 93.Hussey was the leading run-scorer in the Powerplay overs, while his scoring rate was a steady seven per over. Among the others in this list are Chris Gayle, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, and both the regular openers from Pune Warriors, Aaron Finch and Robin Uthappa. Dravid had a high average, but he also played out plenty of dots during the Powerplay overs.Among the bowlers, Mitchell Johnson and Mohit Sharma were the stand-out names in the Powerplay overs. Both took 15 or more wickets at excellent economy rates. James Faulkner, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Praveen Kumar all had superb economy rates as well.

Best in the middle oversHussey was a prominent name in the middle overs too, scoring the second-highest number of runs, and he was often joined during this period by Suresh Raina, who has excellent stats too. These two have the lowest dot-ball percentage among the eight batsmen in the list below, and more often than not ensured that Super Kings had a fine launching pad for the final overs. Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle did a similar job for Royal Challengers, scoring plenty of runs and scoring them quickly. Mumbai Indians have a couple of names in the list too, but Dinesh Karthik got out plenty of times in the middle overs, and Rohit Sharma’s scoring rate during this period was relatively low. David Miller had outstanding stats too for Kings XI Punjab.Harbhajan Singh was by far the leading wicket-taker during this period, with 19 at an economy rate of 6.01, while Amit Mishra had a fantastic economy rate of 5.53. The top two wicket-takers in the middle overs were both spinners from Mumbai Indians – Harbhajan and Pragyan Ojha – and their combination was one of the huge strengths of the team throughout the tournament. Not surprisingly, this period of the game was dominated by spin, with Siddharth Trivedi the only medium-pacer in the list.

Slog-over specialistsMS Dhoni was undoubtedly the batting king of the final overs, scoring 286 runs at more than 12 per over, but also take a look at Raina’s numbers below: in five innings when he batted in the last five overs, he scored 193 runs from 86 balls without being dismissed even once, giving him a scoring rate of 13.46 runs per over. His dot-ball percentage during this period was an incredibly low 7%. Most of the top batsmen had scoring rates of more than ten per over during this period, but the best of the lot was AB de Villiers’ rate of 14.30 runs per over: he scored 186 runs from 78 balls. The highest wicket-taker during the last five was Dwayne Bravo, whose slower balls and clever variations fetched him 24 wickets at a rate of 7.78 per over. In terms of economy rates, though, the two best bowlers were Dale Steyn and Sunil Narine – both conceded less than seven runs per over, and took a fair number of wickets too.

John Percy: New update shared on Gary O’Neil’s future as Wolves manager

Reliable journalist John Percy has dropped a big update regarding the future of Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O’Neil, following his side’s 5-3 defeat away to Brentford over the weekend.

O'Neil struggling as Wolves manager

Wanderers went into Saturday’s trip to Brentford looking for their first Premier League win of the season, but yet again, the travelling supporters didn’t get what they hoped for.

A hugely entertaining game saw the Bees run out 5-3 winners in west London, with Wolves twice coming from behind in the first half, but eventually succumbing to yet another defeat in the top flight.

It means that Wanderers remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, having only got one point from their opening seven matches, so there is understandable pressure on the shoulders of O’Neil currently.

The 41-year-old made an impressive start to life at Molineux, standing out as arguably one of the most exciting young British managers in the game, but things have turned this season, and he desperately needs to turn his team’s fortunes around. Now, a fresh update has dropped on O’Neil’s future.

Update on Gary O'Neil's Wolves future

Writing on X on Sunday morning, Percy claimed that O’Neil still has the backing of those high up at Wolves, despite such a poor beginning to the season:

While many supporters could understandably be frustrated with Wolves’ struggles under O’Neil, it is refreshing to see the club’s board standing by him and still looking at him as the right man for the job.

There is a level of impatience that exists in the modern game that means managers get sacked far quicker than they used to, but if Wanderers believe their current boss is the correct individual to take them into the future, there shouldn’t be too big an overreaction to their start to the campaign.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Wolves can stick with O’Neil forever, and at some point, a change may be needed if defeats continue to arrive after the international break, so the run of fixtures after the international break feels crucial as Percy alludes to.

A home clash with champions Manchester City is a horrible way to return to action later in the month, and it would be unfair to react after that game, regardless of the result.

A trip to Brighton is also tricky, but the back-to-back home clashes with Crystal Palace and Southampton at the start of November feel massive. If Wolves are still without a victory in the league after those four games, you have to wonder whether the managerial situation will have changed, with the club possibly feeling they have given O’Neil long enough by that point.

Liverpool so interested in "dangerous" gem his club have offered a new deal

Liverpool are believed to have sent scouts to watch a “very dangerous” player in action, according to a fresh claim from journalist Christian Falk, with his club even offering him a new deal as a result of the Reds’ interest.

Liverpool transfer news

After a disappointingly low-key summer transfer window, there is pressure on FSG to back Arne Slot more in the market, and players are being linked with a move to Anfield for 2025 already, hopefully giving him more squad depth in the process.

One such figure is Feyenoord midfielder Quinten Timber, who the new Liverpool boss knows well after working alongside him at the Eredivisie club. He is the twin brother of Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber, and at 23 years of age could represent a strong addition for a long period of time.

Feyenoord midfielder Quinten Timber.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace and England centre-back Marc Guehi continues to eye up a move to Liverpool, according to some rumours, having failed to seal a switch to Newcastle United in the summer. He could be viewed as a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk, although the current Reds captain hopefully isn’t going anywhere for a while.

Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has also been linked with a move to Anfield, having starred for Xabi Alonso’s side en route to Bundesliga glory last season, with FSG said to be willing to stump up the cash to sign him. The German would likely be worth at least £80m, such is his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young attacking players.

Liverpool send scouts to watch "very dangerous" ace

According to Falk on X, Liverpool are interested in signing SC Freiburg central midfielder Merlin Rohl, with Reds officials watching him up close and his current club even offering him a new deal, such is the seriousness of Liverpool’s interest.

Rohl could be such an eye-catching addition to Slot’s midfield at Liverpool, even though that isn’t necessarily the most pressing area for him to add to currently, with six or seven strong options there. That said, he is a young player who could be content with a squad role to begin with.

The 22-year-old has 30 appearances to his name in the Bundesliga, bagging two goals and five assists in that time, while Germany Under-21 manager Antonio Di Salvo has lauded him, saying: “He fought his way into [Freiburg’s] team. That’s not easy. He focused on defensive work and also came into his own offensively. He’s very quick and determined. He’s very dangerous.”

Freiburg head coach Christian Streich has described Rohl as a “real difference-maker”, such is his ability, so Liverpool shouldn’t pass up the chance to sign him if the chance arises.

His current club are clearly desperate to keep hold of him and tie him down to a new deal, but the lure of the Reds is huge, as they chase the biggest trophies and continue to grow as a club all over the world.

Cost £0: Maresca must revive Chelsea star who’s worth more than Madueke

Chelsea only have four points from a possible nine to start their Premier League campaign under Enzo Maresca, but the Blues have shown glimpses of a prosperous future.

Spirited in defeat against Manchester City on the opening day, dazzling in victory at Molineux, winning 6-2 amid masterclasses from Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke, and unlucky during last weekend’s draw against Crystal Palace, fizzling out after a blistering start, there are signs of a promising project in development.

Maresca will be displeased with his side’s loss of control during the second half against the Eagles, but the frontline continues to purr, and Madueke looks like he’s shaping into a real menace on the right flank.

Noni Madueke's start to the season

Chelsea signed Madueke from Dutch team PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, welcoming the one-time Tottenham Hotspur youngster for a £29m fee.

He might have burst into life this term but Madueke hasn’t had it easy since his arrival, joining at a turbulent time and failing to quite hit the ground, with Spanish media musing that he was seeking a way out of the club in December 2023.

Last season, he grew in stature under Mauricio Pochettino’s leadership and was once hailed as a “mentality monster” by personal coach Saul Isaksson-Hurst, something that has served him well in biding his time and rising to the fore at Stamford Bridge.

As per FBref, his newfound goalscoring quality has seen him rise to rank among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for non-penalty goals scored, at a rate of 0.53 per 90.

Moreover, he also ranks among the top 7% for pass completion, the top 4% for progressive carries and the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90, emphasising the technical and progressive properties that have won Maresca over, convinced the Italian to entrust him with a crucial role.

It’s indeed quite the show of faith for Maresca to have pushed Sterling toward the exit while continuing to promote Madueke’s skillset, with the 29-year-old joining Arsenal on a season-long loan.

Of course, Jadon Sancho was brought in soon after, with the fleet-footed winger hoping for a big resurgence after falling by the wayside with Manchester United.

Why Chelsea signed Jadon Sancho

With Sterling gone, Chelsea wanted to complete their bulging frontline with something of a like-for-like change, and while some have questioned the necessity of the deal, a long move with an option to buy for just £25m could prove to be a masterful piece of business from the Blues.

The England international, aged 24, is only three years on from signing for Man United in a £73m transfer, but he’s only scored nine times in the Premier League and spent the latter half of last season back on loan with Dortmund given his fractured relationship with Erik ten Hag.

So why did Chelsea sign him? And does Maresca believe that he can rekindle the dynamic player’s qualities, recapture the prodigious potential that had led to him being lauded as a “phenomenon” by talent scout Jacek Kulig?

Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund

Chelsea’s first team would have been just fine without the ace, but bosses viewed the possible venture as an opportunistic move. After all, Sancho has scored 53 goals and claimed 67 assists across 158 matches for the Yellow Wall.

He will not be overburdened by responsibility in west London and can focus on his football. He’s not the only Chelsea man in need of a resurgence this year, however, with Reece James the most lucrative name in Maresca’s ranks to be hoping for a return to the fore.

Why Reece James could still be Chelsea's main man

James joined Chelsea for a grand total of nothing, scoring on his debut against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, as a 19-year-old, during a 7-1 romping.

Chelsea defender Reece James.

He’s one of the club’s most talented players and was handed the captain’s armband in August 2023, having joined the club’s academy aged six. James’ fortunes since have not been auspicious, for he has been ravaged by injuries and pulled from his one-time position at the height of the game.

As you will see below, James is utterly mesmerising when fit and performing at his best, and Chelsea could certainly do with his skillset readily available throughout the campaign.

Not only is he a devastating attacking outlet, but James also enjoyed the defensive side of the game, wrecking his opponent’s offensive efforts, using his stocky frame and athleticism to outwrestle and dispossess.

According to Transfermarkt, James is still worth £34m despite his recent woes, meaning that he is actually worth more than both Madueke and Sancho, who are valued at £24m and £26m, respectively.

It’s worth noting that less than two years ago that value stood tall at £59m, and were it not for his injury misfortune, would perhaps stretch loftier still.

Reece James for Chelsea.

Malo Gusto, 21, is an excellent prospect and impresses when he takes to the pitch for Chelsea, but he’s no James, who offers a distinctive sheen to complement his leadership ability.

Trevoh Chalobah once called the 24-year-old “one of the best in the world”, and it’s clear to see why. Chelsea are at the foundational phase of a new era but need experience and true quality to complement the exciting potential filtering through.

One hailed as an “absolute superstar” by The Athletic’s Liam Twomey, James could be the difference-maker for Maresca this season, and if he can utilise the ongoing international break as a final period of convalescence ahead of a return to full fitness, Chelsea might just restore the talisman to inspire them to heights unseen in several years now.

Leeds missed out on £54m star in the making just after they signed Augustin

Leeds United fans would have been reasonably pleased with the summer business in through the door, as the Whites did leave it late in the transfer window, but have snapped up some potentially quality new additions.

Largie Ramazani is now off the mark for his new employers after costing £10m to get into the building from Almeria, with his goal last time out setting the Whites on their way to a confident 2-0 win over Cardiff City, whilst the likes of Manor Solomon, Ao Tanaka and Isaac Schmidt have also looked equally exciting when they have featured.

Largie Ramazani

Away from these signings that managed to just about get over the line, Leeds have also been cursed many a time by deals going awry at the last minute, with the West Yorkshire giants once in the running to sign a top-class striker in the same year in which they ended up doing the dreaded Jean-Kevin Augustin deal…

Augustin's time with Leeds

Leeds must have wished they hadn’t bothered pursuing Augustin when all was said and done, with the French striker proving himself to be a hassle more than a plus for his side.

Joining initially on loan in January 2020, with an obligation to snap him up on a permanent deal for £18m if promotion was secured, the ex-RB Leipzig man ended up just looking largely out of his depth lining up for Marcelo Bielsa’s men, after so much hype had greeted his signing.

In the end, the 27-year-old flop would only make three first-team appearances in total during his brief but damaging stint in England, with zero goals picked up.

Augustin would just return to Leipzig after the initial loan move expired, therefore, despite Leeds stating that they would sign him permanently, as the German club then ended up ordering the Whites to cough up £24m last year after that alleged breach of contract.

Leeds never got to see these skills on display from Augustin at Elland Road, having also had to endure the frustration of missing out on what would have been a centre-forward upgrade later in 2020.

The man Leeds missed out on

Amazingly, Ollie Watkins could well have joined Leeds over Aston Villa during the summer after Augustin had joined on loan, having revealed this fact during a tell-all interview with Sky Sports in 2021:

“There were quite a few [interested],” he revealed. “Leeds were interested in me, but they signed Rodrigo.”

As Watkins stated, Leeds instead plumped for Rodrigo on a £26m deal that summer to bolster their centre-forward ranks, while Watkins moved on to Villa Park for £33m and has never looked back, with an England call-up even coming his way off the back of his outstanding goalscoring exploits in the Premier League.

The £54m star – as per his transfer valuation on Transfermarkt – is now Villa’s top scorer in the Premier League four seasons on the trot, having amassed a mightily impressive 73 goals from 175 games for Unai Emery’s men to date, with three strikes already registered from six games in all competitions this campaign too.

One that got away

The transfers that nearly happened but never did. This article is part of Football FanCast's One That Got Away series.

Watkins was even a hero for his nation during the recent Euros tournament this summer, with this beautiful finish right at the death sending England through at the expense of the Netherlands in a finely poised semi-final match-up.

In another reality, Leeds could well have played a part in the “spectacular” – as he was labelled by football journalist Ryan Adsett this year – ace’s rise to stardom.

But, the pull of Villa, with Dean Smith as manager who took the 26-year-old under his wing at Brentford, swayed the move in that direction.

Ultimately, the Whites messed up, with the Augustin saga leaving a real sour taste in the mouth, even more so now with the development that Watkins could have been signed in the same year as that shambolic move.

Leeds will just pray they have learnt from their errors, with the signings of Ramazani and others this summer hopefully success stories, over going down as costly flops as well.

Sold for £7m: Leeds played a blinder with star who's now worth just £800k

The Whites seemingly cashed in on the centre-forward at the perfect time.
