Farooqi and spinners set up Afghanistan's rout of Sri Lanka

Gurbaz and Zazai racked up 83 runs, out of a target of 106, in the powerplay itself

Danyal Rasool27-Aug-20221:31

Jaffer: Farooqi sets up batters by swinging the ball both ways

A thrilling all-round performance saw Afghanistan crush Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the first game of the 2022 Asia Cup. The bowlers set the foundation, reducing Sri Lanka to 5 for 3, with Fazalhaq Farooqi responsible for most of the carnage. Despite a brief resurgence in the middle thanks to a 44-run stand between Danushka Gunathilaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Afghanistan struck back hard, running through the lower order.Naveen-ul-Haq, Mujeeb ur Rehman and Mohammad Nabi were all among the wickets, and despite late resistance from Chamika Karunaratne, the 105 Sri Lanka managed was woefully inadequate. It took the Afghan openers just 10.1 overs to take it down; Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hazratullah Zazai racked up 83 runs in the Powerplay itself effectively ending the game as a contest right there. The first three overs
There was chaos and controversy to kick off the Asia Cup, but by the time the fog of the first three overs lifted, Afghanistan had a vice-like grip on the game. Farooqi struck twice in two balls in the first over to remove Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka, but it was Pathum Nissanka’s wicket that raised eyebrows. The umpire deemed the batter to have nicked off to the keeper, only for Sri Lanka to review immediately. In a baffling bit of third umpiring, the on-field umpire was advised to stand by his decision despite UltraEdge showing almost no deviation. It caused consternation among the Sri Lanka camp, but Afghanistan had the rub of the green. Over the next three hours. They made it count.Rajapaksa revival
There was the briefest glimmer of hope for Sri Lanka just after that destructive start that saw them lose three early wickets. It came in the form of a classy little stand between Gunathilaka and Rajapaksa. Rajapaksa lifted Naveen ul Haq over the mid-off boundary for a glorious six to kickstart that passage of play, with his team-mate joining in later in the over. The real carnage took place in the final Powerplay over that saw the pair plunder four boundaries in an over that cost 20 to undo some of the damage that had happened early on. But when Gunathilaka sent a reverse sweep straight down deep cover’s throat, things began to unravel for Sri Lanka once more. Rajapaksa soldiered on briefly, but was ultimately done by some shocking running that saw two wickets fall in that fashion in two balls.Karunaratne’s resistance
It was probably much too late by the 15th over, but Karunaratne wasn’t to know that. Farming the strike adroitly for the final five overs, he almost single-handedly added 30 to the final partnership to ensure Sri Lanka recovered from 75 for 9 to post a three-figure total. It was an engrossing period of play in many ways, with almost every delivery struck to a deep fielder and ending up as a dot ball. There were occasions where the running might have been sharper, but after two run-outs that could only be described as brain freezes, Karunaratne wasn’t taking any chances.Gurbazball?
A low-scoring game in the UAE against Sri Lanka has the potential to become a horrid second-innings scrap, but Gurbaz wasn’t having any of it. In a whirwind of a cameo, he would thump 40 off 18 balls to help Afghanistan rack up 83 in the Powerplay, breaking the back of the chase before Sri Lanka’s spinners could even get into their work. Matheesha Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana were singled out for punishment, tonked for 16 and 21 respectively in a no-holds barred display of pure power.

"Wonderful" Newcastle ace hit with immediate international injury concern

da roleta: Reliable journalist Craig Hope has claimed that a “wonderful” Newcastle United player could now miss the entire international break after picking up an injury.

Newcastle pick up huge win at Nottingham Forest

da dobrowin: The Magpies secured arguably their most important Premier League win of the season so far on Sunday afternoon due to the resilience on show, coming from behind to win 3-1 away to an in-form Nottingham Forest side.

There were plenty who understandably felt that Forest would prevail, considering they sat third in the table going into the weekend action, but Newcastle’s quality shone through, with Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Harvey Barnes all scoring in the second half at the City Ground.

There are definite signs that the Magpies’ season is beginning to catch light, following some indifferent results and performances earlier in the campaign, especially having also beaten Arsenal 1-0 at St James’ Park in their previous league outing.

Newcastle are now up into eighth place in the Premier League and just one point adrift of the Champions League places, with belief growing that they could make a return to Europe’s top club competition after a couple of seasons away from it. Eddie Howe isn’t short of injury problems at the moment, however, and a new update has emerged on the fitness of one key player.

"Wonderful" Newcastle player an injury doubt

According to Hope on X, Newcastle star Anthony Gordon could now miss international duty with England over the next few weeks, having suffered a hip injury in the win over Forest.

This will immediately concern some Magpies supporters, seeing as the £60,000-a-week Gordon has grown into a vital attacking figure since arriving from Everton, being lauded by Troy Deeney recently.

“Newcastle are a better team when he is involved. He got an assist for Alexander Isak’s winner against Arsenal, but the way he drives with the ball and carries the team forward means he’s always a threat. He can be on the right, left or the middle – he’s just a wonderful football player for Newcastle and England. Getting injured and then missing a penalty against Everton could have knocked his confidence but didn’t.”

From a Newcastle perspective, the hope is that the club are simply being cautious with Gordon, potentially removing him from England action in order not to risk him. It does feel like an international break where players from many clubs will be withdrawn, even though they could probably still be deemed fit enough to go and represent their respective countries.

While some may not like the idea of clubs behaving in that way, the importance of keeping players fresh for club duties is huge, so if Gordon has any kind of issue, he shouldn’t be going anywhere near the Three Lions setup.

Better than Isak: 8/10 Newcastle star just dropped a "monumental" display

This man who won 10 duels was even better than Isak for Newcastle against Forest

ByConnor Holden Nov 10, 2024

The 23-year-old may still be waiting for his season to fully ignite, with only two goals coming his way in the Premier League, but his inch-perfect assist for Isak’s winner against Arsenal summed up his ability.

We wanted to try to work with more of our own players in the medium term. When I think about how many expensive players were repeatedly called for. Every time we had an injured player, there were calls for new players. It was a permanent discussion about players. I've never heard that from Vincent."

Chelsea eye £160k-per-week Jackson partner who once "really wanted" to join

Chelsea chiefs are believed to be targeting a very highly-rated strike partner for the in-form Nicolas Jackson, and he once “really wanted” to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea weighing January swoop for striker despite Jackson record

Jackson has been Enzo Maresca’s arguable biggest success story since the Italian took over from Mauricio Pochettino in the summer.

The former Villarreal sensation boasts an excellent record of six goals across 10 games in all competitions so far – finding the back of the net at least once in half of Chelsea’s Premier League matches – with Jackson adding another three assists and contributing to nine goals in total.

The 23-year-old has scored in each of their last two league games against tough opposition in Liverpool and Newcastle United, with his overall form giving BlueCo something to seriously think about.

However, reliable Chelsea sources, like journalist Simon Phillips, claim that the Blues are very much still in the market for a new centre-forward. It is believed that the west Londoners have compiled a shortlist of targets, and they could move for any one of them as soon as January.

Ipswich Town star Liam Delap is being monitored by Chelsea ahead of a potential move, with Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Boniface, Evan Ferguson, Benjamin Sesko and Victor Osimhen also on their agenda, according to Phillips.

The latter was subject to intense interest from Chelsea during the latter stages of the summer transfer window, and Maresca’s side were involved in a high-profile race with Saudi side Al-Ahli for Osimhen’s signature on deadline day.

However, neither side could strike a full deal for the £160,000-per-week Nigerian, who ended up making a move to Galatasaray on a temporary deal instead.

This is despite Osimhen’s eagerness to join Chelsea, as revealed by former midfielder John Obi-Mikel at the time.

“I know what Victor wanted, I know what the club offered him, I know where we got to, we finally got to a compromise, both sides had to compromise, I was just some little things here and there, paperwork, medical, and a few issues we just couldn’t get over the line and we didn’t have much time,” said Obi-Mikel.

“Both sides really played their part in terms of getting the deal done, and I commend Chelsea for that because I can see their ambition of where they want to take this club now and also on Victor’s side, how much he really wanted to come to the club.”

Chelsea eyeing Osimhen as Maresca seeks Jackson partner

According to The Boot Room, Chelsea are eyeing Osimhen despite Jackson’s excellent run, as it is believed Maresca’s side want to partner the African with a striker of the former’s undoubted quality.

If the club do strike a mid-season deal for Osimhen to complement Jackson going forward, it would be quite the coup, and it is entirely possible as the 25-year-old’s Galatasaray loan deal includes a break-clause for January.

This would allow interested sides, like Chelsea, to swoop in mid-season and take Osimhen away from the Turkish champions.

Samson replaces Rahul in India's T20I squad for West Indies series

Sanju Samson has replaced the Covid-struck KL Rahul in India’s squad for the five-match T20I series against West Indies due to begin on Friday. Wicketkeeper-batter Samson was already on tour having been part of the ODI squad as well.Rahul, India’s first-choice opener in the shortest format, has been on the sidelines, recovering from surgery for a sports hernia, since the end of the IPL in May 2022. He was expected to be back in action for the T20Is against West Indies, but caught the virus and was advised a further period of rest.India have plenty of top-order options available and have even begun experimenting with Rishabh Pant as opener alongside the captain Rohit Sharma.Samson has played 14 T20Is for India spread across seven years. With his eye-catching strokeplay, he has always been on the fringes of the national squad, but has recently been getting a lot more chances, especially with several of the senior players being rotated out on account of workload management.Samson was part of the team in Ireland last month, where he made his maiden T20I fifty. His strike rate of 132.39 over the course of 218 T20s is seen as an asset with India trying to play a more aggressive brand of cricket in preparation for the World Cup in Australia in October.

Romano: West Ham eye move to appoint 42 y/o manager with Lopetegui on brink

With defeat against Nottingham Forest leaving Julen Lopetegui on the verge of losing his job, West Ham United are reportedly already eyeing an impressive replacement for the Spaniard.

Lopetegui on the brink at West Ham

Sat in 14th after a summer of heavy investment, Lopetegui is now reportedly on the brink at West Ham. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Spaniard is under increasing scrutiny with forthcoming games against Everton and Newcastle United the chance to save his job.

Romano wrote in his Daily Briefing after the Hammers were brushed aside by Nottingham Forest: “Another defeat yesterday against Nottingham Forest puts Julen Lopetegui on the brink at West Ham.”

Another day to forget, West Ham’s 3-0 defeat against Forest represented a game between two sides in such contrasting positions compared to the expectations in pre-season. Some would have had Forest just above the dropzone whilst placing West Ham in contention for European qualification. After 10 games, however, it’s the latter who sit closest to the bottom three and Forest who are stealing the show in the Premier League.

It seems as though those at the London Stadium have seen enough too, with Lopetegui edging closer to the sack and a fresh candidate to replace the former Sevilla boss now emerging.

0 duels won: West Ham's "ineffective" ace was even worse than Alvarez

West Ham United were defeated by Nottingham Forest on Saturday

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 3, 2024

According to Romano in his Daily Briefing, West Ham are now eyeing a move to appoint Edin Terzic to replace Lopetegui in what would be the German’s first job since leaving Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

Taking the Bundesliga giants all the way to the Champions League final, Terzic left many impressed but still finds himself without a job in what sums up the ruthless world of football management. Now, however, West Ham could hand the 42-year-old a route back into the technical area, with Romano writing: “The Hammers could appoint former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic as the 58-year-old’s successor.”

West Ham can make up for regret by hiring Terzic

With the more old-fashioned David Moyes heading out of the exit door in the summer, West Ham found themselves with one of the most exciting squads outside of the Premier League’s top six and the chance to appoint an equally exciting manager. Yet, in came Lopetegui – a manager who struggled at Wolves albeit without financial backing – and one who has ultimately not become famous for applying the exhilarating football that fans were desperate to see at the London Stadium.

The appointment felt subdued because it was exactly that. Whilst Brighton & Hove Albion took a risk by appointing Fabian Hurzeler before reaping the rewards ever since West Ham stuck with the safe choice only to be full of regret ever since. Now, they should turn to Terzic.

A young manager who proved his worth at Dortmund, Terzic would help get the best out of Mohammed Kudus again in similar fashion to how his 4-3-3 attacking system got the best out of Jadon Sancho. It may be months later, but it’s not too late for West Ham to get their appointment right at the second time of asking.
