Torrid Footitt presses for a Test debut

Mark Footitt is eager for an opportunity at Centurion, knowing that chances of a Test debut do not come along all that often when you have had your 30th birthday

George Dobell20-Jan-2016Had a stranger wandered into England’s net session in Centurion on Wednesday, they could have been forgiven for concluding that Mark Footitt was the outstanding bowler in the squad.Footitt, bowling with pace and skill, made life torrid for all the batsmen. Jonny Bairstow, arguably England’s man of the series, was twice drawn into edges, while James Taylor was beaten like a snare drum. The rest of the bowlers, despite habitually overstepping – a habit that might be best stamped out, even in such sessions – were unable to match his hostility. But you have to be careful with training sessions. While the more established bowlers know not to expend their energy two days before a game, those on the periphery know that is a rare chance to impress. And Footitt knows that, with Steven Finn unavailable due to injury, he is rivalling Chris Jordan and Chris Woakes for a call up. He must fear that the Test in Pretoria might offer a last chance for him.Footitt is a fine bowler. Since the start of the 2014 season, he has claimed 162 first-class wickets at an average of 21.46. While the vast majority of those have been taken in Division Two of the County Championship, where the standards of batting and pitches is not the highest, they are still impressive figures. With his left-arm pace, his new-found control and an ability, at his best, to shape the ball back into the right hander, he has developed into a dangerous, consistent bowler. Graeme Welch, the Derbyshire coach who had notable success with Keith Barker, Chris Wright and Rikki Clarke while bowling coach at Warwickshire, deserves some of the credit.Footitt was a little wayward in the warm-up matches. But some nerves were understandable and he has now had a couple of months in which to settle into the England environment. Moeen Ali would doubtless appreciate the footmarks he would cultivate if he played, too, while the variety would give the attack a fresh look. But Footitt is 30 years old and has recently moved from Derbyshire to Surrey. He will find the pay outstanding at The Oval but the pitches heartbreaking. Just ask Stuart Meaker or Chris Tremlett. With younger men – the Currans, the Overtons, David Willey, Reece Topley et al – breaking through and a winter in Asia beckoning at the end of 2016, it is hard to see where future opportunities may lie.England’s recent history would suggest that Woakes is the likely beneficiary of Finn’s injury. Quite rightly, he is highly thought of within the management team and bowled well without reward in Durban. He is the more likely to retain control – his career economy-rate is 3.05 compared to Footitt’s 3.50 – and his first-class record – 358 wickets at an average of 25.42 – has generally been earned in Division One of the County Championship. He has the ability to move the ball both ways in the right conditions and is a good enough batsman to have made eight first-class centuries: he made his Test debut at No. 6.The management of this team is relatively new, however, and may not judge “bowling dry” quite as importantly as previous regimes. And with Moeen Ali at No. 8, the batting of the third seamer should not be a priority. To the naked eye, Footitt looks the quicker bowler. But perhaps that is just due to the tangle of arms and legs you see just before he delivers. Hawkeye would suggest that Woakes, measured as the fastest bowler on either side during the Durban Test, is every bit as quick. But batsmen do tend to say that Woakes, with his smooth, straight action, is easier to pick-up than some, even if he has started to hide the ball in his run-up in the manner of James Anderson or, before him Zaheer Khan. He seems relatively unloved on social media but very highly rated by his fellow professionals.Chris Woakes bowled well without luck in Durban•Getty ImagesYou could make an argument that Footitt is a more convincing like-for-like replacement for Finn. It is true that both are aggressive bowlers who are liable to concede a few more runs than the dependable Woakes, who might be seen as a more like-for-like replacement for Anderson. But Woakes, effectively the man in possession after playing in Durban, is the one seen as having a future at this level. It would be a surprise if he did not play. There is another option, but it is an unlikely one. England could leave out James Anderson – not ‘drop,’ just leave out in the knowledge that the series is won and they need to keep an eye on the future – and play both Woakes and Footitt. Given Anderson’s workload following this game, however – he will not bowl again in anger until April at least – and his admirable desire to represent England on every possible occasion, it seems almost unthinkable that he will be asked to sit this one out.One man that Footitt did not beat in the nets was Nick Compton. Compton admitted that he had been perturbed enough by Trevor Bayliss’ comments following the first Test – comments which suggested that he would, in an ideal world, prefer a more free-scoring batsman at No. 3 than Compton – to seek clarification from his coach. Upon reflection, and after a couple of odd innings, it seems Compton will be content to revert to the sheet anchor role.”I had a chat with Trevor about it, but there was no inference that was the way he wanted me to play,” Compton said. “He just wanted to make it clear that’s in an ideal world. But I’ve been selected for the reasons that I do what I do and he’s been very clear about me doing that role as well as I can.”It would nice to whack it like David Warner or de Villiers. Wouldn’t we all like to do things differently and better? But having done a bit of that as a youngster and tried different things, I’m settled on what I do.”There’s probably been times when I’ve been frustrated at how I’ve got out, I have perhaps got just a little bit ahead of myself and chased one too many balls.”I’m proud of what I do and I feel strongly that I have qualities and attributes that yes, might not be as glamorous as others at this time and place in life, but still have a big part to play. We know big hundreds and batting for long periods of time is what’s important in Test match cricket.”We know the new ball is a tough place to bat but, if I can get in and stay in, then I’m doing a good job for the guys. From a personal position, hopefully you get in and you cash in.”Compton, at least, is all but certain to win another chance to show what he can contribute at this level. It is an opportunity Mark Footitt might never have.

Man Utd "confident" about completing early January transfer window signing

Manchester United are now “confident” about signing a player to strengthen a priority position early in the January transfer window, and journalist Chris Winterburn has given an overview of who they could sign.

Amorim wants new left-back at Man Utd

Ruben Amorim has seemingly decided that signing a new left-back is high up his list of his priorities this January and beyond, having repeatedly urged Man United officials to strengthen in that area of the pitch.

Barcelona willing to offer Man Utd £221k-p/w ace in exchange for Rashford

With Luke Shaw struggling on the injury front, Diogo Dalot has been filling in on his unnatural side, so it makes sense that Amorim is eager to bring in a more capable option this winter.

Theo Hernandez has fallen down the pecking order at AC Milan, and the Red Devils are now ready to orchestrate a move for the 27-year-old, while they are also eager to win the race for soon-to-be out of contract Bayern Munich man Alphonso Davies.

Bayern Munich'sAlphonsoDaviescelebrates scoring their fifth goal

Both Davies and Hernandez are established names in the top bracket of European football, meaning interest is likely to be high, so there is a possibility that United make a move for a more unknown option.

Winterburn has now provided an update on Amorim’s pursuit of a left-back, naming Girona’s Miguel Gutierrez as a target in what could be a more financially prudent deal. The journalist said that Utd are confident of signing a left-back early in the winter window.

Gutierrez impressing for Girona

Gutierrez has certainly caught the eye for La Liga side Girona, most notably in an attacking sense, ranking in the 94th percentile for assists per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

U23 scout Antonio Mango was full of praise for the Spaniard last season, claiming that he was among the best players in the first tier of Spanish football:

The 23-year-old has established himself as an important player for the Spanish club over the past few seasons, adding to his experience by featuring six times in the Champions League this term, and he has also made five appearances for national side.

Given his talent, Girona should still be able to command a high fee for Gutierrez this winter, particularly considering he is contracted until the summer of 2027, but he could be a fantastic signing for United if they are able to orchestrate a deal.

Poor fielding, extraordinary batting

Plays of the day from a run-soaked match between England and South Africa in Mumbai

Firdose Moonda18-Mar-2016The welcome
South Africa allowed themselves a quiet first over that gave no hint about what was to come. The very next over, as soon as Reece Topley offered some width, their real intent was unveiled. Topley bowled it full and fairly far outside the offstump. Quinton de Kock reached for it and reached hard. The ball sailed over point and into the stands. The battle lines had been drawn. The blunder
Topley’s opening over ended up costing 15 and he was sent to mid-off to ponder straightening his line when Hashim Amla drove Moeen Ali towards him. Topley had to move to his left to take the catch at waist height and got himself into the perfect position before taking his eye off the ball and spilling the chance. Amla was on 9 at the time and went on to make 58. So yes, it could get worse. The power and the placement
De Kock’s first four fours and three sixes came with brute force but he showed there was more to his game than his just power. There was placement too. The ball after Amla was dropped, Moeen bowled one from over the wicket to de Kock, who used the angle and played the ball late to trickle it just past Jos Buttler and bring up South Africa’s fifty, off 23 balls. The misfield
England bowled three overs without conceding a boundary and had started to pull things back when Alex Hales released the pressure with a misfield that had Joe Root seething. JP Duminy hit the ball down the ground to long-on where it bounced one before reaching Hales, who would have a simple pick up and throw back to the bowler. But Hales had over-run and ended up awkwardly stretching out an arm to stop the ball, which cheekily evaded him and breached the boundary. Root let out an anguished yell from his mark which Hales must have heard. The blunder II
Kyle Abbott was stationed at short fine leg to stop sneaky singles and did not seem to be expecting a chance to come his way. At least not immediately. Hales picked up the first ball he faced, delivered by Dale Steyn, off his hips and flicked it behind square where Abbott was caught unawares. Instinctively, Abbott had his hands up and they found the ball but before he could wrap his fingers around it, it burst out of his hands. Hales had not scored a run before that but this blunder did not cost too much. Abbott had Hales trapped lbw by the time he got to 17.The improvisation
South Africa resorted to death bowling tactics in the Powerplay and Abbott was making things particularly uncomfortable for the England batsmen every time he landed his yorker. It’s a tough delivery to get right every time and when Abbott missed, Jason Roy had an answer. The England opener got into position and ramped a full toss over de Kock and fine leg for six. He seemed to get nothing more than the toe-end of the bat onto the ball but with enough force to send into the Wankhede stands. The crowd catch
Both sides had moments where pressure got the better of their catching and they may want to have a word with the security guard who took a cool one-handed catch even as the ball seemed to go over him. Root lofted Abbott over long-off. The ball went high and long but the security guard was up for it. He stuck out his right hand while he stood up and collected the ball cleanly before casually tossing it back on the field. That’s how it’s done, gents.

'There's a space to be curious' – MLS Next is reimagining youth soccer development by removing scorelines, wins and losses

American soccer has eliminated scorelines at some youth levels as it looks to improve its footprint on a global scale

In Germany, they don't even use goalies. Go to a youth game for an elite academy – Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen – and you will see U13s and U14s running around, keeping the ball, and passing into empty nets.

In England, they don't even use a conventional pitch at all. Watch Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and you will find early teens gaining "points" by successfully completing passes from one box to another. In Belgium, there are fewer players on the pitch.

These are tweaks to traditional soccer, ways of innovating to adjust the youth game, and taking advantage of the footballing brain when it is at its most malleable. In short, youth soccer is changing. The idea of 11v11 is dying, especially at younger ages. The focus, now, is on finding the spaces in between, maximizing talent, and developing creative advantages wherever you can.

READ MORE:

The United States is aware of this. And MLS is working on a solution. Their approach seems radical. Working with a stats-based platform, they have eliminated wins, losses, and draws. Scores, at least in the traditional sense, are irrelevant. Standings aren't based on scorelines or traditional results.

Instead, the league has partnered with Taka, a highlights and analysis platform that judges "quality of play" to determine a winner in any given contest. And while it represents a significant shift from traditional values of "winning" a football match, stakeholders insist that it's the perfect way for the U.S. to develop its next generation of talent.

"What we've identified is: let's give them the entire season to develop," Luis Robles, MLS Next technical director, told GOAL. "So don't worry about the wins and the losses. Don't worry about the standings. Figure out as a coach, how do you want your team to play?"

Get the MLS Season Pass today!Stream games nowMLS Communications'Now we're building strategy'

In theory, this makes a lot of sense. MLS Next took over from the Development Academy four years ago. It was the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and presented a rare opportunity for the league to innovate.

"The first couple of years was about, 'Let's get this thing going.' Then we had to right the ship. And now we're in a great place where now we're building strategy," said Robles, who played in MLS for nine years.

Since then, they have consolidated large chunks of the American youth soccer system under their umbrella. There are now 29 MLS academies, and 122 affiliated clubs. Piece it all together, and MLS Next oversees 753 teams and north of 16,000 players in the United States and Canada.

The challenge before them is that youth soccer is fickle, and changes radically across the nation. Some teams have massive influence across multiple states, and operate in talent-rich areas. Others are more isolated. Scorelines are not only variable but also, occasionally, demoralizing.

Some clubs are elite for younger ages, and far less competitive at older – or vice versa. Robles and MLS Next identified the youngest possible age, U13s and U14s, to implement new strategies.

"And so when we look at player development in year five," he said. "The strategy is at this particular age group, 13s and 14s. What can we do to enhance player development?"

The solution is to strip away the ideas of wins and losses and instead focus on individual and team performance. At that age, they summarized, players are too young to worry about professional contracts – but old enough to have the technical quality to develop as footballers.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport'If you ask a mathematician to look at a soccer game, they won't understand'

Taka is the group responsible for doing all of this. An Irish company who have consulted for Premier League clubs in performance models, they were the perfect match. They applied for MLS's request for proposal a year ago, and brought their technology to the league.

Taka, in short, is an in-depth data platform that "grades" actions of play on a soccer pitch. All of this is done by real humans, remotely. After every game, employees in Eastern Europe scour game film, and score every pass, every dribble, every shot, every tackle. Those "actions" are then evaluated – admittedly subjectively – as either positive or negative. The results are subsequently uploaded to a platform that players and coaches alike can access. The whole process takes about four hours.

Crucially, Taka employs soccer people, not mathematicians. Every summer, the company advertises the job, asking would-be applicants to, effectively, grade a soccer match. They then take the top 15 percent, and put them through their paces to test their game understanding. Those who are deemed to have the right amount of knowledge to break down thousands of individual instances – from first touches to 30-yard screamers – are then brought on.

"If you ask a mathematician to look at a soccer game, they won't understand," CEO Mark Shields said. "They are soccer people. And then the mathematicians are in the sort of modeling process."

And every year, there's widespread interest – yes, even if it means watching hours of occasionally low-quality youth soccer.

"We get loads of people applying because we're talking about a job, basically as a video scout for soccer," he said.

Getty Images'That's going to be super significant'

This all comes with a challenge, though. If soccer is an inherently subjective and fluid sport, how can blanket data be applied? A center-back, for example, might touch the ball 12 times over the course of the game. Ten of those touches might be clearances, the other two well-timed tackles. If no goals go in, and the player doesn't make any real mistakes in terms of positioning and communication, it's fair to say that he has played well. But he hasn't really been involved.

Simultaneously, an attacking player might have 50 touches, give the ball away consistently, and complete just two out of 10 dribbles. But those two successful dribbles could lead to goals – and, in traditional scoring, a 2-0 win thanks to his center-back's strong showing in defense.

"If a winger is on the flanks and they're taking someone on, we want that," Robles said. "Whereas traditional data is going to say successful dribbles, and if they're one out of 12… but what if the one out of 12 led to the goal? That's going to be super significant. And that's how we score it."

The same applies for other traditional statistics, such as pass completion percentage or progressive passes. Traditionally, a low pass completion might suggest a worse performance. But those low percentage passes might be high risk – the kind of balls that very few others can play. Completing fewer of those, but seeing them lead to goalscoring opportunities, are rewarded by Taka's metrics.

"It's like David [Beckham], you're one of the best midfielders in the world right now," Robles said. "Why is it that your pass completion is in the 60s and the 70s? And when they pulled back the layers, they realized is, why did we like Beckham so much? It's because he was one of the only in the world that would receive it on the flank and play that diagonal ball."

Beckham, judged on Taka's formula and data collection, is graded more kindly based on the passes that he failed to complete – largely because of the positive risk taken associated with playing them. That's why individual actions are given "name" values rather than a traditional numerical value. In turn, effort and intention are rewarded rather than distinct outcomes.

"Imagine a center-back playing for Cedar Stars against FC Westchester – a 12-year-old center-back," Shields says. "Cedar Stars are winning 1-0. Is having 13 touches, none of them consecutive, hoofing the ball clear, developing a ball-playing center-back? The answer to that is no because you want his instinct to be to get down and play."

Major League Soccer'We must be careful not to marginalize the value of winning and losing'

MLS Next insists that it will allow coaches and players to remove biases associated with wins and losses, and focus on the bigger picture of the game. That, in turn, will bring about improvement in individual moments. Taka's platform ensures that players will be able to watch hundreds of isolated moments over the course of a campaign – and learn from them.

"It's just another perspective," Robles said.. "It's another way to reward teams and coaches and players who are looking to implement whatever style they want to play, while also realizing that traditional data may not capture creativity, may not capture the sort of players that we're hoping to develop."

But for some, it's not so cut and dry. Wins, losses, and draws are traditional values associated with soccer – and competitive sport more broadly. There are fears that electing to eliminate them in favor of full statistical analysis could eliminate some of the pillars of the game.

"My hesitation in calling this the definitive path forward lies in the essential nature of competition itself," Pat McStay, Director of the ECNL Heritage Project and long-time youth soccer coach, told GOAL. "In sport, we must be careful not to marginalize the value of winning and losing, as they are integral to the competitive spirit and psychological resilience of young athletes."

Shields, though, rubbished that notion.

"It's not about 'Is quality of play better than competition?' Because competition will always exist," he says. "It's about 'Is quality of play and competition better than competition alone?' I think that's the important question."

And MLS Next is still keeping some of those principles in place. At the end of every season, once quality of play rankings are finalized, the top clubs will be invited to a winner-takes-all competition. There will, eventually, be something on the line to play for here – even if the focus is on stats and individual development.
