Sheffield Wednesday suffer new injury setback for "really good" 24 y/o

da fazobetai: Danny Rohl has provided a new worrying injury update regarding a “really good” Sheffield Wednesday player, acting as a blow ahead of an important game against Sunderland on Friday.

Latest Sheffield Wednesday news

da gbg bet: It’s fair to say that the Owls’ playoff push has hit the skids in recent weeks, with a number of disappointing results seeing their promotion hopes dented, acting as a reality check at the same time.

Last Friday, Wednesday lost 4-0 away to a Burnley side chasing automatic promotion – one who haven’t conceded in the league since before Christmas – while before that, they suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Coventry City, following a disastrous late error by goalkeeper James Beadle.

These back-to-back losses mean that Rohl’s Owls side sit 12th in the Championship table and now six points adrift of the playoff places, highlighting the need for a huge upturn in form as soon as possible.

On Friday night, Wednesday welcome fourth-place Sunderland to Hillsborough, with further dropped points possibly acting as a nail in the coffin. In fairness, injuries haven’t helped in recent times, not least to the influential Barry Bannan, and now a new update has emerged.

Sheffield Wednesday suffer new injury blow

Speaking to The Star, Rohl confirmed that Sheffield Wednesday winger Anthony Musaba has suffered an injury setback, meaning he will miss the Sunderland game: “At first it looked good, he trained on Sunday (after the Coventry game) but he got a small reaction, now he has had two rejections.

“I hope it is this week, then next week and then before Plymouth he is back. Sometimes at first an issue starts in one part of the body and then maybe with some different movements it goes into another part.

“It is a shame but he is positive and I think he will be available for the end of the season, maybe the last eight or nine games. We are working on it, he is still positive. It is harder of course to have him out of the squad.”

Sheffield Wednesday forward Anthony Musaba.

This is undoubted blow for the Owls ahead of what feels like a must-win game, with Musaba capable of causing problems with his pace and trickery.

While not necessarily always the most consistent player, the 24-year-old can be a match-winner on his day, scoring twice and registering five assists in the league this season, as well as being hailed by Mark Robins back in 2023: “They’ve got some quality. Musaba is a really good player and he’s shown that of late, he’s starting to add goals to his game, he’s quick, he’s powerful, he’s strong and he has got an eye for goal. Cadamarteri up front works his socks off, he never stops running.”

It now has to be a case of other attacking players standing tall against Sunderland in Musaba’s absence, with anything other than victory not feeling like enough. Hopefully, he will be back in the fold sooner rather than later.

Blow for Chelsea! Antonio Conte's Napoli set to revive interest in Man Utd star Alejandro Garnacho as winger's price tag revealed

The Argentine winger was the subject of interest in January from Napoli and Chelsea but ended up staying put at United. But journalist Cristiano Abbruzzese, via Area Napoli, claims the Italian team have made the 20-year-old their number one target to replace Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – who joined Paris Saint-Germain at the turn of the year.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The report adds that with United not being in a particularly strong position when it comes to the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules, the Red Devils may have to sell players – in order to fund their warchest – this summer. And due to Garnacho being an academy product, meaning he will go down as pure profit on the balance sheet, United may be open to moving him on at the end of the season, with his asking price said to be around €50 million (£42.5m). Incidentally, a move to Napoli may be more appealing if Antonio Conte's men win Serie A this season, with his team currently top of the league.

Garnacho, whose contract at Old Trafford runs until 2028, has scored 10 goals and bagged nine assists in 52 appearances in all competitions this season.

Pakistan end 365-day winless streak where they last won

It took a little over an hour for Pakistan to wrap things up, as they hunted down the remaining 83 runs in very un-Pakistan fashion – without fuss and little drama. Sure they lost three wickets, but from the very first ball – which was pulled for four – that they’d get there in the end was in little to no doubt. The result means Pakistan take a 1-0 lead against Sri Lanka in this two-match series, and get them off to the ideal start in this new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. It also gives them a first Test win in exactly a year – the last also coming in Galle.Imam-ul-Haq was unbeaten on 50 with Agha Salman for company when the winning runs – a sumptuous loft over long-off for six – were scored. Prabath Jayasuriya ended with figures of 4 for 56 to increase his ever-growing collection of scalps at Galle, but that will be scant consolation for the hosts. And while those of a Pakistani persuasion might have had doubts gnawing away in the back of their minds over a potential collapse, or a snatching-defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory performance by the visitors this morning, this was a result that might force a rethink.Related

On the surface, a four-wicket win when hunting down 131 might point towards some jitters, but this was oddly enough a chase that seemed in control despite those losses. The first delivery of the day in fact provided a microcosm of how both these sides managed their respective briefs throughout this Test, as the sometimes-erratic Ramesh Mendis dragged one short for Babar Azam to put away easily to the boundary behind square leg; Pakistan needed quick runs, Sri Lanka needed to keep things tight, only one side followed the script. This boundary was followed by another later in the over, with the first five overs of the day eventually being plundered for 30 runs. Both Babar and Imam showed uncharacteristic intent during this period, using their feet to the spinners, while the Pakistan captain even gave the sweep a rare outing. When he fell, trapped leg before by Jayasuriya, some of those watching on, familiar with Pakistan’s history, might have been forgiven for bracing for a potential scare. After all, back in 2009, Pakistan had folded alarmingly fast when chasing a similarly paltry total at the very same ground. But this is a new Pakistan – or at least they’re trying to be.They had assured prior to the day’s play that they would play attacking cricket, and so they did, Imam pumping one handsomely over long-off the very next over after Babar’s fall, and Saud Shakeel – the first innings hero – also slashing one behind point. And as the deficit reduced, their intensity only increased. With a little over 20 runs left, Shakeel took Sri Lanka’s best bowler for a pair of boundaries on either side of the wicket. At this point, Shakeel’s average had risen above 100, but he settled for a little less in the end, nicking one through off Mendis before the innings was done.Sarfaraz was the last to fall, top-edging a sweep to deep square leg with just four left to get, but Agha rammed home the point, smoking one long and straight first ball to wrap up the game.As for how long this positive-Pete version of Pakistan carries on remains to be seen, but for the time being, it’s certainly something to be celebrated. Sri Lanka, for their part, have four days to recalibrate on how to combat this new beast and gather themselves for round two in Colombo.

Gaur, Filer enjoy dream debuts as England stroll to seven-wicket win

Three wickets each for Mahika Gaur and Lauren Filer before Maia Bouchier hits winning runs

Valkerie Baynes09-Sep-2023Mahika Gaur and Lauren Filer showed off more than a glimpse of a bright future for England, each taking three wickets on ODI debut to set up their side’s seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in Durham.Combined with three wickets for legspinner Sarah Glenn and Amy Jones’ prowess behind the stumps – becoming the first England wicketkeeper to take five catches in a women’s ODI innings – the duo helped bowl Sri Lanka out for 106 inside 31 overs and the home batters reeled in their paltry target for the loss of just three wickets with 32 overs to spare.Gaur, who at just 17 had played 19 T20Is for UAE before making her England debut in the format with two matches against Sri Lanka during this tour, was handed her maiden ODI cap by retired seamer Katherine Sciver-Brunt and she honoured the changing of the guard with 3 for 26, including the prize dismissal of captain Chamari Attapaththu for just 10. Impressive quick Filer then got in on the act, snaring two wickets in two balls and three in total for figures of 3 for 27 after England won the toss.Legspinner Glenn was England’s only frontline Spinner with Sophie Ecclestone injured – although she would have been rested for the series anyhow – and offspinner Charlie Dean overlooked. She also took 3 for 20 as Sri Lanka failed to halt their slide, sparked – and ended – by Gaur.Gaur’s second delivery in ODI cricket resulted in five wides, a length ball to Anushka Sanjeewani swaying down the leg side and evading wicketkeeper Jones’ attempt to gather. Seven dot balls followed from the tall teen, however, including a gem which shaped back past Sanjeewani’s bat and bounced over the stumps and another which beat Attapaththu’s outside edge after jagging away from an off-stump line.Attapaththu, Sri Lanka’s captain and danger player after playing a decisive role in both her side’s T20I wins over England, chipped a low full toss over midwicket off Gaur two balls later but, at the end of her next over, Gaur snared a prize wicket with a beauty which angled in then moved away to clatter into the top of Attapaththu’s off stump, gone for just 10.When Gaur bowled Sanjeewani with a full inswinger that smashed middle stump, her debut struck dream territory and England were off to the best start they could have hoped for, their opponents reduced to 26 for 2.Glenn trapped Vishmi Gunaratne lbw and then Filer was brought into the attack to excellent effect. Where England had struggled against Sri Lanka’s spinners in losing the last two T20Is, the tourists had no answers for Filer’s raw pace.Filer came on in the 14th over then struck with the third ball of her next, when she did Hasini Perera for pace and bounce, pulling back her length and brushing the glove as Jones did the rest. Then, in the 20th over, Filer claimed the back-to-back wickets of Kavisha Dilhari and Nilakshi de Silva, both caught behindJones also removed Harshitha Samarawickrama off Alice Capsey when England overturned umpire James Middlebrook’s not-out decision and Oshadi Ranasinghe attempting to cut a turning Glenn delivery. Then Glenn bowled Achini Kulasuriya through the gate with one that gripped the surface.Fittingly, it was Gaur who closed out Sri Lanka’s innings with another stunning delivery that nipped into Udeshika Prabodhani, slid between bat and pad and kissed the top of leg stump.Having twice been bowled out inside 20 overs during their defeats to Sri Lanka, England welcomed back ODI openers Tammy Beaumont and Emma Lamb to the 50-over format and the pair guided their side to 61 without loss before Beaumont fell for 32 attempting to cut Inoka Ranaweera only to find the hands of Hasini, diving low to her right at slip. Lamb was gone in the next over, chipping Ranasinghe to mid-off.Despite Heather Knight gloving her attempted sweep off Dilhari behind with eight more runs needed, Maia Bouchier – another making her maiden ODI appearance – struck the winning runs, a four off Athapaththu through the covers to make it a day for the debutants.

Edwards' onslaught powers New South Wales to emphatic bonus-point win

Allrounder Jack Edwards starred with bat and ball as New South Wales crushed Tasmania by six wickets in the Marsh Cup.Edwards blasted 92 from 63 balls in the run chase after earlier taking two wickets during miserly spells in Melbourne.Tasmania, with Beau Webster top-scoring with 65 and Edwards taking 2 for 24 from nine overs, were all out for just 198 in 49.5 overs.Related

In reply, Edwards led an early run-scoring rout and New South Wales cruised victory with a whopping 93 balls to spare which earned them a bonus point.Edwards thumped 11 fours and four sixes in his aggressive 63-ball innings, dominating a 137-run partnership with fellow opener Daniel Hughes.Hughes made a polished 58 from 71 balls having been involved in an usual incident early in his innings when he was given caught behind off Riley Meredith having been distracted by bowler’s towel falling out as he ran in. The umpires conferred and ruled it a deal ball so Hughes survived.Meredith was then unable to complete his second over, leaving the field after five deliveries.Earlier, Tasmania’s batters apart from Webster were collectively stifled by a disciplined NSW bowling line-up. Pacemen Edwards, Jackson Bird and Hayden Kerr were among the wickets while curtailing the run rate.Bird, making his first appearance for NSW against his former team, was exceptional with the new ball as he had Caleb Jewell caught a first slip third ball and began with back-to-back maidens. He also had Jake Weatherald caught behind in an opening spell than finish 7-2-17-1.Tasmania plunged to 75 for 6 in the 27th over but Webster then found an ally in No. 9 Paddy Dooley, the pair putting on 90 runs for the seventh wicket. Webster struck six fours in his 80-ball knock and Dooley made 39 from 63 balls.

Usman Khawaja stretches Australia's advantage before rain ends play early

Even for a team hot on big run chases, it shapes as a daunting prospect to avoid going 2-0 down in series

Andrew McGlashan30-Jun-2023A day which began with the second Test evenly balanced ended with Australia holding a firm grip on this contest, and perhaps with it the Ashes. England folded during the morning session to a myriad of wild shots, conceding a lead of 91, before Usman Khawaja led a determined effort from the visitors’ top order under grey skies which made batting tricky.By the close, which came 27 overs early due to drizzle, Australia’s lead stood at 221 and even for a team that began this Bazball era with a series of big run chases, it shaped as a daunting prospect to avoid going 2-0 down.England had resumed on 278 for 4 after yesterday’s dramatic final session which saw three wickets surrendered to hook shots and Nathan Lyon limp out of the match and most probably the series with a calf strain termed “significant”. But they completely missed the chance to stretch Australia’s bowling resources, losing their last six wickets for 47, and from 188 for 1 their last nine for 137. Harry Brook’s carve into the off side summed up a batting approach that has surely lurched too far, even for this team. They needed early inroads in response, but for the second time in the match Khawaja and David Warner battled through favourable bowling conditions, this time for an opening stand of 63. It was the first time Australia had put together two half-century first-wicket partnerships since 2018, when Khawaja was also part of them alongside Aaron Finch in Dubai. The day had started poorly for England and never got better. The frenetic tempo of the previous evening had been slowed somewhat by Ben Stokes but the captain fell to the second ball of the day when he was squared up by Mitchell Starc and got an outside edge to Cameron Green at gully who held another sharp chance.Brook, who had been dropped on 25, brought up an unconvincing half-century from 63 balls before becoming the latest England batter to fall to the short ball, backing away to the leg side and slicing into the covers. It is the type of stroke that has brought him thrilling runs, but given the state of the game it was another wicket donated especially as it meant Australia were into England’s lengthy tail.Starc, who won the final selection call ahead of Scott Boland having missed out at Edgbaston, was impressive with a spell of 5-0-13-2. Having claimed Joe Root the day before, he showed his wicket-taking value.Jonny Bairstow played within himself before bunting Josh Hazlewood to mid-on and there wasn’t much on offer from the bowlers. Ollie Robinson edged a charge against Travis Head, who will need to shoulder the spin bowling in Lyon’s absence, and Stuart Broad was lbw sweeping.Warner and Khawaja were tested by the new ball with the bat beaten on numerous occasions, especially Warner’s. England did not bowl poorly and could easily have made early inroads, but such is the way a game often goes when a side has not taken previous opportunities that have been presented. They reviewed for an lbw against Warner when he had 5 but replays showed a thin inside edge against James Anderson. On 19, Khawaja was given a life when he pulled to Anderson at midwicket but the chance burst through the hands. Again, dropped chances hurt England. For the second time in the game it was Josh Tongue who made the breakthrough when he trapped Warner lbw from round the wicket to continue his encouraging return to the side. He thought he had claimed Marnus Labuschagne, too, on 3 but the DRS showed he had been struck outside the line to add to umpire Ahsan Raza’s list of overturned decisions.Either side of tea there was another flurry of shouts involving Labuschagne, all of which Broad thought were out as he completed full-length celebrappeals. Stokes made the correct call not to review either of them off the last two balls of the afternoon session – for caught behind and then lbw – but he erred after the break when Labuschagne would have been lbw on 16 to a Broad inswinger. England coach Brendon McCullum relayed the bad news from the balcony and Broad did not hide his frustrations.Labuschagne, who has been skittish throughout the first part of this series, never settled and carved a short, wide delivery from James Anderson to backward point although Anderson could not conjure much of a celebration.By then Khawaja had moved to fifty with a delightful off drive and had visions of ticking off another career highlight with a place on the honours board. As he moved beyond 700 deliveries faced for the series in just four innings it was difficult to escape the feeling that you were watching one of the decisive differences between the teams.

West Ham likely to bid for once-£100m player in the final days of January

West Ham United are increasingly likely to lodge a January offer for a player who once cost nine figures, as we now enter the last few days of this winter transfer window and co-chair David Sullivan maintains the club’s pursuit of a new signing.

Galatasaray hitman Baris Yilmaz was subject to an offer from West Ham recently, as per some Turkish media sources, but their advances were snubbed by the Süper Lig champions who appear determined to keep hold of their star attacker.

“Barış Alper Yılmaz received an offer from West Ham United, Galatasaray did not put the offer on their agenda,” said journalist Mehmet Ozcan to Haber Sarikirmizi.

“He is expected to finish the season at Galatasaray. As far as I understand, Barış Alper will be facilitated at the end of the season.”

Meanwhile, there is also a belief that West Ham had an approach rebuffed for PSV Eindhoven star Ricardo Pepi, so it appears Sullivan and the Irons recruitment team are starting to make serious moves as they seek a fresh forward option before February 3rd.

Ricardo Pepi for PSV Eindhoven.

Niclas Füllkrug and Michail Antonio are both sidelined with long-term injuries, leaving Potter with just Danny Ings to choose from in terms of a natural number nine, with West Ham also among the English top flight’s lowest-scoring sides.

Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson is reliably claimed to be a top striker target for the east Londoners, amid credible reports that he could be allowed to leave on loan.

West Ham likely to make last-gasp January bid for Evan Ferguson

Claret & Hugh writer, Sean Whetstone, says that West Ham are “likely” to make a last-gasp January window bid for Ferguson, with the Republic of Ireland international now close to returning from injury.

“West Ham are likely to make a late bid loan for Evan Ferguson in the last few days of the transfer window which closes next Monday with Brighton now entertaining offers for their striker,” said Whetstone on X.

“A straight loan deal would be dependent on competing offers from other Premier League clubs and the 20-year-old being declared fit to play immediately. The forward is on the verge of returning from a recurring ankle injury which has kept him out since Christmas.”

This comes alongside other reports that Ferguson is willing to join West Ham and the club are in contact with Brighton, so it appears his potential move to the Londojn Stadium is heating up.

Given Brighton once valued him at around £100 million, Ferguson has been viewed as a forward with serious potential in recent seasons, and perhaps he could get going again with a temporary switch to West Ham as he possibly looks to reunite with Potter.

Not just Harry Gray: Academy stars setting Leeds up for sustainable success

Leeds United continued their incredible form under Daniel Farke with a dramatic comeback win against Sunderland on Monday night as the club builds for the future under 49ers Enterprises.

Leeds charging towards promotion

It’s fair to say the mood has shifted at Elland Road since Andrea Radrizzani sold his majority stake to the 49ers group in the summer of 2023. The first job on the hands of the new owners was to shift a considerable amount of the signings made under ‘Radz’, nearly all of whom sat on large salaries with baffling relegation clauses.

18 months on from a horde of those signings filling the books while heading out on loan, and only Rasmus Kristensen remains in that position, with the 27 year-old expected to complete a permanent move to Eintracht Frankfurt once the season reaches its conclusion.

And that conclusion looks more and more likely to come with the Whites back in the top flight, after a stunning brace from Pascal Struijk rescued three points against Sunderland on Monday, with the Dutchman sending a warning to Leeds’ promotion rivals.

Leeds have now won four on the bounce in the league, scoring 15 in that time and conceding just once, and look the clear favourites to secure automatic promotion ahead of a monster clash with chasers Sheffield United next Monday evening.

The real test for the new owners begins once the promotion dream is achieved however. As it stands, all three promoted sides in the top flight are set to fall straight back down for the second season in a row, with the step up becoming increasingly difficult. Luckily for the Whites and Farke however, they may just have the perfect recipe for success thanks to their thriving academy.

Fewer touches than Meslier: Farke's Leeds star was the hero over Struijk

The Leeds United star was the real hero of the night instead of Pascal Struijk.

ByDan Emery Feb 18, 2025 Two strikers on fire in Leeds academy

With PSR strangling the spending of even the biggest clubs in the Premier League, the only sustainable route to success is to either identify top talents from abroad before selling them for huge profits – perhaps best known as the Brighton model – or to grow those talents within your own academy.

Of course, Leeds have already borne the fruits of the latter strategy, nurturing Archie Gray into a top player before selling up to Tottenham Hotspur – albeit much to the dismay of plenty of supporters.

Lucky for those supporters however, there is another Gray emerging at Thorp Arch – Archie’s younger brother Harry, who returned to the scoresheet for the Under-21s this weekend, netting a brace in a 2-1 win against Derby County, prompting praise from analyst Ben Mattinson.

The 16 year-old has been recovering from a back injury since pre-season, but has now played 90 minutes in his last two Premier League 2 appearances and looks back to his best.

And he’s not the only goalscorer thriving behind the scenes in Yorkshire, with 15 year-old Oliver Boast recently breaking into the Under-18 set-up after dominating at Under-16 level. Boast has scored once already in the Under-18 Premier League and bagged in the FA Youth Cup against Manchester City earlier this month, with Mattinson singling him out as the best talent alongside Gray.

Meanwhile, the likes of Charlie Crew are already thriving out on loan and youngsters like Wilfried Gnonto and Mateo Jospeh are more than playing their part in Farke’s quest for promotion.

With sustainable success the name of the game for clubs who don’t have the backing of a Newcastle or Man City, the 49ers Group are currently doing everything right not only in building a side capable of earning their status back in the big time, but in righting the wrongs of their predecessors, focusing on youth and planning for the long-term.

Whilst it remains to be seen how the London giants will resolve their issue in the number nine position, the emergence of Ethan Nwaneri has helped to deal with the loss of Saka to injury.

Arsenal's Ethan Nwaneri celebrates scoring their fifth goal with teammates

The 17-year-old whiz, who turns 18 in March, has emerged as a genuine first-team option for Arteta this season, with some eye-catching performances on the right flank.

Ethan Nwaneri's emergence this season

Nwaneri made his Premier League debut at the age of 15 years and 181 days against Brentford in September 2022, which made him the youngest player in the history of the division.

Two seasons later the England U19 international has become a regular in the senior set-up. He has made 24 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season, including 15 outings in the top-flight.

As you can see in the table above, Nwaneri has produced four direct goal contributions in four starts in the Premier League, with his latest being an assist for Mikel Merino in the 2-0 win over Leicester at the weekend.

The teenage sensation, who has scored seven goals in all competitions, may soon have another incredible teenage talent alongside him in the first-team, as Arsenal have 15-year-old Max Dowman rapidly rising through the ranks.

Arsenal could hit gold with Max Dowman

Arteta, as he already has with Nwaneri, could hit the jackpot by unearthing the young attacking midfielder in the coming seasons, as he is emerging as an incredible prospect who could be as good as the current first-team academy graduate.

Back in November, Fabrizio Romano reported that the then-14-year-old was already training with the first-team at Arsenal, and that the club consider him to be a “huge” talent.

In the same month, analyst Ben Mattinson claimed that Dowman has stood out at U19 and U21 level, despite his incredibly young age, and described his talent as “insane”, whilst he added that it would not be a surprise for him to make his debut this season and beat Nwaneri’s Premier League record.

The 15-year-old starlet has already made his U21 debut and has racked up three goals and two assists in eight appearances for the U18s this season, which shows that the youngster is starring well above his age bracket.

Dowman is shining in the academy and has clearly caught Arteta’s attention, hence why he has been in first-team training as young as 14, which is why he could be as big of a talent as Nwaneri, who has emerged in the senior set-up at the age of 17.

Arsenal now make contact for "composed" £50m striker with 20 league goals

The Gunners have made the first move to sign a striker who is the top scorer in his league this season.

ByDominic Lund Feb 16, 2025

It is now down to the manager to plot the perfect pathway to the first-team for the left-footed playmaker, who is yet to make his senior bow, to ensure that the club can strike gold with the teenage ace, who could eventually become a regular for the Spanish tactician in the future.
