"World class" £25m Brazil star almost certain to move with Newcastle keen

da mrbet: Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing a “world-class” player for a cut-price amount this summer, with the individual in question “almost certain” to leave his current club.

Latest Newcastle news

da bet7: The Magpies are preparing to trade Premier League commitments for FA Cup action this weekend, following the 2-0 defeat away to Liverpool in midweek.

If anything, Sunday’s visit of Brighton represents the more important game of the two, with Eddie Howe’s men having a good chance of going all the way in the competition this season. Granted, there is already the Carabao Cup final to focus on next month, but there aren’t many of the ‘top’ clubs left in their way in the FA Cup either.

In terms of Newcastle transfer rumours, a swap deal involving Juventus attacker Kenan Yildiz and St James’ Park favourite Sandro Tonali has been mooted, although Howe will surely be desperate to retain the services of one of his most important players.

Meanwhile, Kalidou Koulibaly has been mentioned as an option to come in and boost the defence this summer, with the Senegalese veteran now plying his trade at Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. It may be that Paul Mitchell looks at younger defensive targets instead, though.

Newcastle eyeing "world-class" £24.7m ace

According to TVPlay [via Sport Witness], Juve midfielder and Newcastle target Douglas Luiz is “almost certain” to leave this summer. The Brazilian is now available for just £24.7m and the Magpies are “ready to evaluate” a move for him, having initially been valued at around £37.1m.

Luiz is a player who has built an impressive career for himself, even though things at Juve haven’t gone too swimmingly this season, with only three starts and 481 minutes of Serie A action coming his way.

The 26-year-old is still at a great age, in terms of Newcastle having him in their ranks for plenty of years before he peaks, and journalist Quentin Gesp has described him as “world-class”. Meanwhile, Villa sporting director Monchi has also spoken fondly of him, despite his struggles this season: “He’s playing less than we all expected, but we’re talking about a strong player.

“There are guys who arrive and impose themselves, others who need time. Patience is needed, but Douglas’ qualities are beyond discussion. He will become important for Juve. He’s a playmaker and every ball that comes out of his feet has a meaning: last year he played 90% of the games with us. He was decisive.”

In Luiz, Newcastle would be signing a player with a huge amount of Premier League experience, making 175 appearances in the competition, not to mention being an 18-cap Brazil international.

The only downside to the Magpies snapping him up would be if it meant Tonali heading in the opposite direction, but if that doesn’t happen, he can help make Howe’s midfield even more formidable in the coming years.

Real Madrid now discussing 8-figure move to sign Everton star Moyes loves

European giants Real Madrid are now discussing a move to sign an Everton ace who David Moyes believes is a “top player,” according to a recent report.

Everton transfer news

The Toffees have all but mathematically secured their Premier League status for another season, as their point against Manchester United over the weekend means they are now 14 clear of the bottom three ahead of Wednesday’s action.

Moyes has unearthed Everton's new version of Richarlison in "thriving" star

He’s been one of the best performers in the Premier League over the past few weeks.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 25, 2025

And as they look certain to be in the top flight once again next season, attention may soon start to turn towards the summer transfer window. Everton have a few players whose contracts are set to expire, and that could allow Moyes to bring in a few of his own targets.

One player Everton are interested in signing is Marseille’s Luis Henrique, who is a winger and could replace Jack Harrison if he returns to Leeds. However, the Toffees are not the only Premier League team interested, as Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United are also keen on signing the 23-year-old.

Luis Henrique for Marseille.

But Henrique is not the only winger Moyes has his eyes on, as according to Give Me Sport, Everton are interested in signing Manor Solomon from Tottenham. Solomon is currently enjoying a successful loan spell with Leeds himself, but his future with Spurs looks to be over, as they are looking to sell the player for £10-15 million in the summer.

Real Madrid discussing move to sign Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite

But while the Premier League side have their eyes on arrivals, they may also have to consider a big departure, as according to TEAMtalk, Real Madrid are weighing up a potential move for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite, as they look to strengthen their defence.

The Spanish giants are currently in the middle of an injury crisis in defence, as Eder Militao has been ruled out until the summer. And with David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger also being out of contract in 2026, Florentino Perez is keen on signing a new centre-back, discussing a move for Branthwaite with other Real Madrid chiefs.

There has been no concrete approach to the player or Everton, but the Spanish giants are now holding legitimate internal discussions about making a move, with Carlo Ancelotti the man who gave the 22 year-old his debut.

For the Toffees, their stance hasn’t changed; Branthwaite, who is under contract until 2027, is valued at over £70 million, and they are not looking to sell him on the cheap. Moyes has only been back at Goodison Park for a few weeks, but he has already labelled Branthwaite as a “top player”.

“Jarrad has done really well. There are moments when he can do better; there are times he still plays like a young centre-back but has an awful lot going for him.

“With PSR [Profitability and Sustainability Rules], I don’t know all the stuff, but we still have some work to do in the summer. I was aware of it when I came in, but I’m hoping we’re beginning to stop thinking about that now.

“We’re beginning to think about moving forward, what we’re going to do. I think we’ve got a bill to pay, hopefully we pay that bill, then we’re in the clear. “So, Jarrad is a top player, and if people want to buy Jarrad, I’ve said many times – bring a big bag of money.”

Ryan Patel century guides Surrey to consolation win

Ryan Patel recorded his fourth List A century to steer Surrey to their second Metro Bank One-Day Cup victory of the season and consign Essex to the Group A wooden spoon. However, Patel’s 117 off 119 balls was not enough to help Surrey finish any higher than one place above Essex after a disappointing campaign for both counties.Patel shared partnerships of 62 with late call-up Krish Patel, 60 with Josh Blake and 51 with Conor McKerr as Surrey chased down 260 to win with a boundary off the last ball. McKerr also claimed career-best List A figures of 4 for 55 in Essex’s 259 for 9.Essex were indebted to two significant stands in reaching a slightly below-par score on a dead pitch. Beau Webster (69) and Noah Thain (63) lifted them from 79 for 4 with a fifth-wicket partnership of 109 in 24 overs, while Jamal Richards (31 not out) and Ben Allison put on 52 for the ninth wicket. There was drama before play started when captain Rory Burns twisted an ankle in the warm-up and at 10.28am Surrey had to register 17-year-old leg-spin all-rounder Krish Patel.Essex tails were up when they had Surrey’s best hope of anchoring their response, Dom Sibley, out first ball to a bottom edge and having his middle stump jagged back. But they had not factored in Ryan Patel.Josh Blake joined Patel in a 60-run partnership that took up 10 overs before picking out the square-leg boundary sweeper to give Richards a wicket in his first over. Ben Geddes followed to a catch at mid-on off Aron Nijjar. The left-handed Patel hit three fours in the first over and reached his fifty from 50 balls with a six over midwicket. But he lost Cameron Steel to a running catch at long leg off Webster. The debutant Patel joined his namesake and had revised the target to 116 off 20 overs. The lateness of his call-up did not affect his nerves and even found time to deposit Nijjar for six over long off to mark the fifty partnership. He was eventually out for a 46-ball 30, lbw going back to Nijjar. The senior Patel reached three figures with his 13th boundary, punched through extra cover, from his 102nd delivery faced. McKerr’s 20 from 24 balls kept Surrey on course before he was bowled by Webster.Patel’s 45-over innings ended when he drove Allison to Webster at short extra cover and suddenly Surrey needed 33 from six overs with three wickets in hand, then 15 from 12 balls. They lost Ealham to another Webster catch in the covers off Allison as the target rose to 13 from eight balls.A sweep off the first ball of Beard’s final over by Griffiths reduced the figure to nine off five balls, but only a single from the next two balls heightened the suspense. However, Moriarty nudged another bourndary followed by another to leave three required off the last ball. But Griffith’s drive through mid-on for four from a full-toss decided the outcome.Essex lost their first three wickets to sloppy shots inside the powerplay. Nick Browne, captaining the side in his first List A game of the season, lofted Amar Virdi straight for six but perished next ball when he chipped tamely to short mid-on.Feroze Khushi also departed after hitting Dan Moriarty’s second ball over the ropes before being stumped off a legside wide. And Luc Benkenstein became the third to fall in the first 10 overs when he chased a wide one. Charlie Allison did not last long either, dragging on against Steel to leave Essex four down and only 14 overs gone. However, that was the prelude to a steadying century stand between Webster and Thain that helped Essex out of their nosediveThain’s second six, driven straight off Tommy Ealham, brought up the hundred stand in 21 overs before the pair were back in the pavilion in the space of 13 balls, both falling to McKerr. Thain pulled to short midwicket and Webster edged a lifting ball behind. The returning Virdi grabbed two quick wickets for List A-best figures of 3 for 38 with Beard playing all around one to be lbw and Will Buttleman bowled off his pads.

Rohit Sharma uses his experience to 'do what was necessary for the team'

The India captain says the side were “not great with the bat” in Lucknow, but having hung around to give his bowlers something to work with, he knew they could “do magic”

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Oct-20231:46

Pujara pleased to see Rohit bring out the sweep

For the very first time in this World Cup, India had to set a total. And, coming up against England in Lucknow, they were off to a rocky start at 40 for 3 in the 12th over. From there, as per their captain and Player of the Match Rohit Sharma, it was vital for him to use all his experience on a challenging pitch and “bat to the situation”.”It’s just not about going and playing my shots, when you have that much experience you’ve got to use that experience and do whatever is necessary for the team, and it was at that point in time necessary for me to take the game as deep as possible and create that partnership and get to a decent total,” Rohit said after the game.He had raced away to 17 off 11 in the first two overs after England put India in, but as England repeatedly broke through at the other end, he cut back, easing his way to 29 off 40 before he would hit his next boundary – in the 14th over on his way to 87 off 101, which set India up for a 100-run win. That margin of victory might be as convincing as they come, but Rohit felt India had left a lot of runs out on the field. He had done the initial repair job with KL Rahul, putting on a stand of 91 for the fourth wicket, and then adding 33 more in partnership with Suryakumar Yadav before falling 13 short of a hundred. From there, England chipped away regularly, tying India down to 229 for 9.Related

Bumrah: 'Good challenge to be put under pressure by England'

Report – Shami, Bumrah demolish England to make it six out of six for India

“I still felt like we were 20-30 runs short once we finished,” Rohit said. “The new ball was a bit challenging and then obviously as the game went on the ball got softer, it was not easy to rotate strike. But we said in the middle that we’ve got to keep digging in, keep digging in and then, finally, you know we got to a decent partnership there, but like I said we were 20-30 runs short towards the end.”Regardless of the conditions, Rohit said some of India’s issues came down to their batters being loose. Shubman Gill was bowled by a good one from Chris Woakes – albeit driving a touch airily – and then Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were poor in their shot selection, offering up catches, the former for a duck. After their repair work Rahul and Rohit, and then Suryakumar too, were caught going for the big shots.Rohit Sharma kept India on track despite early losses•ICC via Getty Images

“We were not great with the bat today, losing three wickets in the first powerplay isn’t the ideal situation but when you are in a situation like that all you are looking to do is create that long partnership, which we got. But then couple of guys threw it [away] at the end, including myself,” Rohit said. “But at that stage all I was thinking was to be positive and the balls in my areas I wanted to put it away. That’s how you put the pressure back on the bowler and the opposition as well but, yeah, when you look at the overall picture, I thought we were 30 runs short there.”Those lost runs were quickly forgotten as India quickly carved up England’s line-up, pacers Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah doing the early damage. Rohit was all praise for his attack: “With the experience that our seamers have now, you know you can always rely and bank on it that they could come good and get you those crucial breakthroughs and that is exactly what our seamers did. They exploited the conditions well and I thought they put the ball in the right areas to create that doubt in the batsmen’s minds.”Asked by Michael Atherton at the post-match presentation if India’s is the best-rounded attack in the tournament, Rohit said: “We’ve got a good balance. A couple of good spinners and the seamers have a lot of experience playing in these conditions and, yeah, if I look at the overall options I have in terms of bowling, there is a fair bit and with experience as well.”So you know when you have a bowling line up like that, it’s very important that the batters put the runs on the board, give them something to work for and then rely on them to do the magic.”And magic they did, rolling England over with 15 overs to spare to keep India unbeaten at the top of the table and consign the defending champions to their fifth loss in six games.

Nahida, Fargana and Murshida set up Bangladesh's comfortable series win over Pakistan

Ameen top-scored for Pakistan with an unbeaten 84 but they could only finish with 166 for 9

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2023A record opening partnership for Bangladesh in women’s ODIs set up their series win in the final game of the tour against Pakistan. The right-left combination of Fargana Hoque and Murshida Khatun added 125 for the first wicket, setting Bangladesh on course for their 167-run chase at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. It took an unbeaten 84 from opener Sidra Ameen for Pakistan to crawl to 166 for 9 in their 50 overs. On a slow surface, Bangladesh employed only six overs of fast bowling from Marufa Akter, operating with spin for the rest of the overs to pin Pakistan down.Ameen hit only three fours in her knock and finished with a strike rate of 58.74. She added 65 for the opening wicket with Sadaf Shamas (31 off 61 balls) but Pakistan failed to string partnerships in the middle order. While the opening part took 116 balls for their stand, the second-wicket stand between Ameen and Muneeba Ali was worth 28 off 70 balls. From 93 for 1, Pakistan could never quite find the momentum and finished with a low total. All of the middle-order batters were out for single digits and only Diana Baig – batting at No. 9 and scoring 11 off 9 – scored at a strike rate in excess of 100. Nahida Akter once more was the tormenter-in-chief, finishing with 3 for 26 in ten overs.Bangladesh’s reply was a slow but steady one. Both Hoque and Murshida had strike rates in the fifties but they never let Pakistan in the game. Left-arm spinner Nashra Sandhu then struck twice in two overs to dismiss the openers. But captain Nigar Sultana once again exuded calmness and finished the chase off in the company of Sobhana Mostary. It was the third ODI series win for Bangladesh over Pakistan, but the first time in a bilateral series of three matches. Pakistan had won the opening contest before Bangladesh got back with a Super Over win in the second ODI.Pakistan continue to be second on the ICC Women’s Championship table while Bangladesh are placed sixth. But only three points separate the two sides.
