Man United "have been assured" superstar wants to join

Manchester United target Andre Onana is 'very open' to a switch to Old Trafford from Inter Milan and progress on a potential transfer could be made 'this week', according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

What's the latest transfer news involving Andre Onana and Man United?

According to Sky Sports News, Manchester United have made a bid worth €45 million (£38.5 million) to try and land Onana's signature this summer while talks over a move for Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund are continuing.

The report states that there is a gap in valuation between the two clubs; however, optimism exists that a compromise can be agreed upon between Inter Milan and Manchester United.

As per 90min, Inter Milan are holding out for around €60 million (£51 million) before considering selling the £63k-a-week ace, though Manchester United are willing to pay a maximum of €50 million (£43 million) for the 27-year-old stopper and believe that they have a strong hand in discussions.

Other names have also emerged on Manchester United's goalkeeper target list, including Feyenoord's Justin Bijlow, who could be available for a fee in the region of £25 million.

Brighton & Hove Albion stopper Robert Sanchez has emerged as a cheaper alternative if Manchester United fail in their endeavours to bring in Onana and would cost around £30 million to bring to Old Trafford, as per The Daily Mail.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Jones expects progress on Onana's proposed move to Manchester United imminently.

Jones stated: "The fallout from the weekend is that United do intend to stay on the trail of Onana but they have been cautious not to rush into their offer for him. One key thing in this transfer interest is that they have been assured that Onana is very open to joining them – he’s not forcing his way out of Inter but he would love to be United’s next number one if he does leave.

"That’s promising for United. Links with him to Saudi Arabia do not help their cause as they have no intention of being used as an auctioning tool and they will not get dragged into a price war.

"But I expect progress this week, one way or the other, as De Gea needs some clarifications too."

Would Andre Onana be a good signing for Manchester United?

Onana is a reliable shot-stopper and very comfortable with the ball at his feet, fitting Erik Ten Hag's possession-based tactical framework nicely.

Last term, the Cameroon international amassed 41 appearances in all competitions for Inter Milan, keeping 19 clean sheets, as per Transfermarkt.

Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

As per FBRef, Onana recorded save percentages of 73.5% and 80.7% in Serie A and the Champions League, respectively, demonstrating his capacity to come up with important contributions in key moments for his current employers.

Of course, Manchester United face a stand-off with David De Gea at present, who was set to agree an extension at the club before a U-turn occurred, leaving him as a free agent and unlikely to return to the club if a move for Onana is completed, as per talkSPORT.

Having a clean break may be best for both parties and, in turn, enable Ten Hag to rely on a man that is more in tune with his ideals between the sticks in the form of Onana, who would be a statement signing for Manchester United ahead of 2023/24 commencing.

McCullum stirs to fire up Middlesex's season

Brendon McCullum stirred and suddenly Middlesex’s NatWest Blast season was alive again as they saw off Kent at Richmond

Middlesex revived their T20 hopes with a 16-run defeat of Kent Spitfires at Richmond as their captain Brendon McCullum provided runs to go with his inspirational qualities to once again fill their season with optimism.McCullum’s captain’s innings of 88 in 51 balls – his first major knock of the season – looked set to be the launchpad for a formidable total but Calum Haggett’s 3-27, and a Matt Coles’ hat-trick, restricted the hosts to 179 for 8. However, Kent started poorly and while half-centuries from Sam Northeast and James Neesham kept them in the hunt the rate climbed steadily. With wickets falling too they fell to their third defeat of the competition.Victory will be a boon, too, for their coach Dan Vettori, one of only two specialist T20 coaches in the competition, after a sluggish start to the season.Steve Finn, Middlesex’s England fast bowler, was bullish about their chances after McCullum had led them to victory. “It was an exceptional innings and great to watch,” he said. “He hit so cleanly. Everyone is happy in the dressing room right now. We have an exceptional top order.”This is the strongest team I have played in since since making the final in 2008. We’ve been found wanting in T20 since so it is important we have put this structure into place, We are still getting to know the coaches and captain anf haven’t fired consistently as a team yet, but we don’t want to peak too early.”Put into bat on a greenish pitch, Middlesex began with alacrity, but also with the benefit of fortune. Matt Coles surprised McCullum when the Kiwi was on six but though the ball popped up temptingly it fell between fielders. McCullum had scored another 11 when he drove the same bowler to Northeast at cover only for his Kent counterpart to drop him. On both occasions, to Coles’ chagrin, the next ball was smacked for four. With McCullum reaching his 50 in the ninth over, and the opening partnership into the 80s, 200-plus beckoned. Even after England call-up Dawid Malan, having pulled Coles for six into the food tents, gloved the next ball to depart for 33 it was 125 for 1 after 13. But James Tredwell (1-22) and Haggett staunched the flow of runs.Frustrated, McCallum played one bold shot too many, bowled trying to ramp, and a clatter of wickets ensued. Morgan followed successive sixes by holing out then Coles took a last-over hat-trick completed by bowling Tim Southee first ball.Southee fared better with ball in hand, having Daniel Bell-Drummond leg before to the opener’s first ball. The in-form Joe Denly, having survived a very sharp chance to McCullum, then edged Finn to leave Kent 2-2. Sam Billings soon followed but Northeast and Neesham, running excellently for a pair only recently acquainted, and finding hitherto unseen gaps in this small outground, added 75 in nine overs. However, boundaries were sporadic and by the time Northeast skied the rate had crept above 11-an-over.Darren Stevens quickly followed but Kent have a long battery of hitters. Blake joined Neesham and it came down to 38 off three overs, then 29 off two, but when that pair perished the game was done.

Newcastle Eye £35m "Machine" Who’s "Very Similar" To Rodwell

Newcastle United are reportedly keen to prise Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City this summer, as Eddie Howe seeks to continue his midfield overhaul at St James' Park.

What's the latest on Phillips to Newcastle?

With the Magpies having already wrapped up a deal for AC Milan playmaker, Sandro Tonali, the Telegraph are now reporting that the club could turn their attention towards the England international over the coming weeks, with the 27-year-old having endured a difficult debut season at the Etihad.

While the report suggests that the former Leeds United man – who made the move to Manchester on a £45m deal last summer – is hoping to stay and fight for his place under Pep Guardiola, a possible swift exit from the treble-winning outfit is potentially still on the cards.

Although the piece does not state how much a deal for the Yorkshireman would cost, the Mirror reported earlier in the window that Premier League rivals Liverpool were eyeing a £35m move for the 5 foot 10 ace.

Would Phillips be a good signing for Newcastle?

There is no denying that it proved to be a frustrating first season for Phillips with the Cityzens, with the 27-cap maestro having been restricted to a bit-part role in the club's glittering success, after racking up just 21 appearances in 2022/23, making only two league starts in that time.

While previously described as a "machine" by The Athletic's Jordan Campbell during his prior stint at Elland Road – where he made 234 appearances across all fronts and helped guide the club to promotion – the £150k-per-week man's recent woes should well be of concern to Howe and co.

Newcastle may wish to avoid making the same mistake as that of their bitter rivals, Sunderland, with talkSPORT pundit Ray Parlour suggesting that the situation of Phillips at City is "very similar" to that of Jack Rodwell – who also endured infamously dour stint at the Stadium of Light.

Much like his compatriot, Rodwell had shown early promise after rising up through the ranks at Everton, with then-Toffees boss David Moyes stating that the midfielder had a "good future ahead of him", prior to making the move to Man City on a £15m deal in 2012.

As it proved, the Southport-born dud arguably "wasted two years of his career" at the Etihad – according to journalist Leigh Curtis – as he made just 25 first-team appearances, before joining the Black Cats in 2014.

That move proved even more disastrous as Rodwell endured a run of 39 top-flight games without a win – a league record – having also been lambasted by former boss Chris Coleman due to his apparent willingness to see out of his contract, rather than move on elsewhere.

Described as the 'worst signing in Sunderland's history' by the Chronicle's James Hunter back in 2018, the current Sydney FC man endured a torrid time of it in the northeast, with those at St James' Park perhaps wary of seeing history repeat itself.

The Tynesiders could well follow in the footsteps of their long-time foes with the addition of Phillips, with the Leeds native – who Guardiola described as "overweight" last season – seemingly not the solution for Howe this summer.

Pundit Reacts To "Amazing" Celtic Transfer News

Pundit Alan Hutton has been reacting to Celtic transfer update involving Gangwon FC forward Yang Hyun-jun.

Is Yang Hyun-jun joining Celtic?

The Hoops have made a start on their summer business, with midfielder Odin Thiago Holm and winger Marco Tilio both signing five-year deals at Parkhead from Valerenga and Melbourne City respectively.

There have also been some outgoings, with midfielder Aaron Mooy announcing his retirement and winger Jota signing for Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad in a deal worth £25m.

New manager Brendan Rodgers is set to be handed a £30m transfer kitty by Celtic chiefs ahead of the 2023/24 campaign, and it looks as if some of those funds could go on bringing Gangwon FC forward Yang to Glasgow.

The 21-year-old has been on Celtic’s radar in recent weeks, with an offer submitted last month. A fee in the region of £2.1m fee was agreed between the two clubs, however, it looked as if Gangwon were open to keeping the player until the New Year when their season came to an end.

There appears to have been a breakthrough over a transfer, though. Gangwon are now ready to allow the forward to leave immediately, adding that Yang's transfer "remained a matter of time". Yang himself is keen on a move and has previously said that he would give his salary in order to seal a move:

"Celtic is a good offer, so I want to go. I have to do my best as a member of Gangwon. But I think the desire to go will still be there.

"I want to go to Celtic this summer. I hope Gangwon will allow me to transfer. If the transfer fee isn’t enough, I’ll even give my salary."

What has Alan Hutton said about a potential move?

Taking to Football Insider, Hutton, who contributes to Sky Sports, was talking about Celtic and Yang and the fact the player is so keen to join the Hoops that he would give up his salary.

The former Scotland defender said he wouldn’t do that, adding that Yang must be “desperate” for the transfer, describing it as “amazing to read”.

“I wouldn’t. He must be desperate to make the move.

“It is another one of those transfers that has got Postecoglou’s name written all over it. I can’t imagine Brendan Rodgers coming in and knowing too much about that league.

“It is something that the player is obviously desperate for. It is amazing to read something like that.

“We are hearing about people going to Saudi for millions a year and this player is willing to give up his salary to make a move which is the polar opposite.”

Should Yang get his wish and move to Scotland, he would provide Rodgers with a versatile option as he is primarily a right-winger who can also play on the left or through the middle.

He could be just what is required, especially following Jota’s departure, and by the look of things, Yang is willing to go far in order to sign for the Hoops in what could be another shrewd coup be the club when it comes to the Asian market.

Pakistan trip up South Africa to revive campaign

Pakistan ensured they remained alive, beating South Africa by 19 runs via the DLS method to complete a turnaround only they seem to be able to manage

The Report by Danyal Rasool07-Jun-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details2:45

Agarkar: Complete performance from Pakistan

Never mind the damp conclusion; this is Birmingham in June, what did you expect? The weather shouldn’t detract from the fact that Pakistan pulled off an upset in the game of the tournament so far. It is a shame the contest wasn’t able to carry on till its natural conclusion, because it could have been the day the 2017 Champions Trophy finally came to life. Instead, it was the day Pakistan ensured they remained alive, beating South Africa by 19 runs via the DLS method to complete a turnaround only they seem to be able to manage, and with inexplicable regularity.Pakistan put on a vastly improved bowling display as they shackled South Africa’s batsmen to restrict them to 219. It might have been nearer 150 when Pakistan got rid of six South African batsmen inside the first 30 overs for 118, but David Miller, so often required only to provide late firepower, showed his all-round batting credentials. He anchored the innings with an unbeaten 75 off 104 balls. Hasan Ali finished with 3 for 24.It turns out you can open the bowling with two quality fast bowlers in England conditions, after all. Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan were tight and disciplined, bowling to a plan, meticulous in ensuring South Africa’s openers were not allowed width. Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock had to shuffle around to manipulate the ball past the inner circle, never quite looking as comfortable as they so often do. A superb opportunity to get a wicket was missed as early as the second over, with de Kock setting off for a suicidal single, and only Shoaib Malik’s inability to hit the stumps spared him.The seamers might have started well, but the spinners wounded South Africa. Imad Wasim – brought on inside the first Powerplay – removed Amla with his second delivery, the batsman missing his nudge off a straight ball.De Kock joined him soon after. He had survived an lbw shout off Mohammad Hafeez as Pakistan failed to review an lbw call that would have been overturned, but he hadn’t learned his lesson and missed a sweep off Hafeez. South Africa’s innings went from shaky to all-out panic just an over later, when captain AB de Villiers slashed Imad Wasim first ball straight to backward point. Pakistan suddenly had complete control of the game.Miller tried to take some control of the South African innings, stepping out to hit two sixes, but South Africa simply could not get partnerships going. Duminy and Parnell were victims of contenders for ball of the tournament, each pitching around off stump and tailing away. Duminy got an outside edge that carried to first slip, while Parnell could put no barrier between ball and off stump. South Africa were 118 for 6, and Pakistan were running through them.Chris Morris gave Miller some company as South Africa looked to get as close to 200 as possible, but there were no signs of the ragged death bowling that had been a feature of Pakistan’s performance against India. Mohammad Amir and Junaid Khan were unplayable at times, bowling reverse swinging yorkers almost on demand.Miller was able to hold his side’s innings together though. It was a small win in an innings where Pakistan had the upper hand almost from start to finish. Other than Morne Morkel’s bowling, it was the only positive South Africa could cling to on a day even the most conniving spin doctor could struggle to describe as anything other than a disappointment for the world’s top-ranked side.Set 220, Pakistan approached the run chase the way modern teams have been doing all around the world, but coming from Pakistan, it still felt like a novelty. Fakhar Zaman was clearly given a job to do, but actually doing it against Kagiso Rabada and Wayne Parnell under gloomy skies on debut is altogether different. He was dismissive of any width, slashing the ball through the covers and behind point at every opportunity, and even creating width when there wasn’t any to smash the bowlers square of the wicket either side. But it’s the nature of quick hitting that it is always likely to be ephemeral. Morkel, whose place in the side has been a subject of such debate of late, reigned in a galloping Pakistan. Both openers were dismissed in one over as the tall fast bowler exploited both his variation and the bounce he invariably seems to generate on every surface. That over was followed by 20 straight dot deliveries as South Africa neutralised Pakistan’s flying start and came roaring back into the game. Morkel’s opening spell reading 5-1-7-2.Hafeez and Babar Azam were stuck with negotiating the sustained pressure the bowlers were putting on them by now, the renewed energy in the fielding side palpable. Both were hanging around without ever looking especially comfortable, and South Africa always seemed to be on the cusp of a wicket. That arrived, somewhat inevitably, with the second ball of Morkel’s second spell, as Hafeez tried to pull one that grew too big on him, leaving Imran Tahir to take his second catch of the evening.Rather than add pressure on Pakistan, that somehow relieved it, and what followed was their most free-scoring spell since the first six overs. Rabada and Morkel went for two boundaries each in their subsequent overs, and by the time rain intervened, Pakistan were 19 runs ahead on the DLS equation. That was good enough, on a day an unfancied Pakistan side had generally been exactly that.

Spurs could move for "new Shinji Kagawa"

Tottenham Hotspur could enter back into the race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Daichi Kamada, according to Graeme Bailey.

Who is Daichi Kamada?

Across five years with the club, the Japanese attacking midfielder made 179 appearances, scoring 40 and assisting 33 in all competitions.

The biggest moment of the player's tenure at the club is undoubtedly winning the side's first-ever European trophy in 2022 when they defeated Scottish side Rangers on penalties to win the Europa League.

daichi-kamada-liverpool-transfer-opinion-premier-league

His first introduction to English football was a memorable one, with his brace for Frankfurt against Arsenal in the Europa League in 2019 being the result that saw then-Gunners gaffer Unai Emery sacked.

His manager in Germany, Oliver Glasner, was full of praise when asked about Kamada:

"I've only rarely encountered such an intelligent player out on the pitch. Daichi's sense of anticipation for where dangerous spaces will open up is excellent. I trust him to find the spaces opposing teams give us."

Former manager Adi Hutter shared Glasner's sentiments, stating: "I have to admit he’s really surprised me – in a good way! He’s come on leaps and bounds, not just as a player but his character has really come to the fore, too."

Following the announcement that he wouldn't be renewing his deal with Eintracht Frankfurt, a host of clubs were reportedly interested, however, AC Milan were the side that seemingly had won the race for the highly coveted Japanese midfielder.

In recent days though, reports have surfaced suggesting that following the overhaul in the Milan hierarchy that saw names such as Paolo Maldini lose their jobs, the deal that would've seen Kamada head to the San Siro has since collapsed, which opens the door for clubs previously interested to try again.

One such club who may put their hat back into the ring is Tottenham. The club have held an interest in the player for a number of years, dating back to 2021, and now he is available for free they could make their move.

Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, journalist Bailey stated that Spurs have long held an interest in Kamada, whilst also mentioning that the eye for Japanese talent that new manager Ange Postecoglou has could also be a factor in pushing forward a move.

"I love this player, Daichi Kamada on a free transfer is an interesting one. Milan did the deal, but they delayed it for weeks and weeks and they haven’t approved it. Dortmund like him, Inter and Napoli are liking him. Tottenham and Newcastle liked him before.

"Ange Postecoglou knows all about the Japanese players and there’s none better than this guy, on a free it wouldn’t surprise me to see Tottenham getting back involved in this. He could be an outstanding pickup for any Premier League team on a free transfer, he really could.”

Would Kamada fit in at Tottenham?

Despite the recent signings of James Maddison and Manor Solomon, Kamada would still be a fantastic fit at Spurs.

Former Leicester midfielder James Maddison.

The 26-year-old is incredibly versatile, having played in all three frontline positions as well as both attacking midfield and central midfield throughout his career, which would give the north London side an added boost to two areas of the pitch.

Kamada is also an incredible attacking threat, sitting in the top 1% of all midfielders across Europes top five leagues for non-penalty XG, whilst also sitting in the top 10% for non penalty xG + xAG.

According to FBref, some of his best comparisons include Nicolo Barella, Federico Valverde and Ilkay Gundogan, putting the Japanese player into some esteemed company.

As Bailey stated, Postecoglou has experience and pedigree in working with and getting the best out of Japanese talent, with the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate recent success stories, and the opportunity to work with a player who has been called the "next Shinji Kagawa", could be a massive opportunity for both parties.

ODI series win helped us mentally – Waller

Malcolm Waller believes confidence bred by the ODI series victory has bled into the Tests as well

Andrew Fidel Fernando16-Jul-2017There is growing excitement in the Zimbabwe camp about a strong match position, which could turn into a historic win. Zimbabwe have lost 12, and never won a Test against Sri Lanka. Although the pitch is not quite as spin-friendly as was expected, a lead of 262, with four wickets in hand, translates to an excellent position.Malcolm Waller, who was involved in the unbeaten 107-run stand that helped transform Zimbabwe’s situation, said the confidence bred by the ODI series victory has bled into the Tests as well. “The guys are extremely positive after the one-day series,” Waller said. “It was great and it helped all of us mentally. We thought we’ve got a great chance here. If we can go out there tomorrow and put on another 100 runs, you never know what’s going to happen. It will give us a really good fighting chance.”Zimbabwe had earlier been 59 for 5, before Sikandar Raza struck up two long associations, first with PJ Moor, then with Waller. “It was a really shaky start and it put us under lot of pressure in the changing room,” he said. “But the batters, we sat down and talked about going out and fighting, and showing that you mean business.”It was a great partnership between Raza and PJ Moor. I think that stabilised the things and brought back the positivity. At the end of the day, we can be happy with what we have.”While Sri Lanka’s interim coach Nic Pothas believed the pitch had become easier for batting, Waller said conditions were testing, despite having maintained a strike rate in the 90s for parts of his innings. While there was turn on the pitch, only occasional deliveries leapt out, he observed.”I wouldn’t say that is really easy for batting. We saw the odd one did turn. You’re always going to get the odd one that turn and jump. I think we were concentrating on every ball and it’s never easy out there. Especially in the second innings in Sri Lanka, the pressure is always on. Graeme Cremer, being a wristspinner – there is more turn for him than the finger spinners.”Zimbabwe’s performances on this tour have been something of a surprise, not least because they had had a modest 2017 themselves. Earlier in the year, they had lost a five-match ODI series to Afghanistan, and more recently had been defeated by Scotland in an ODI. Having come to Sri Lanka immediately after tours to Scotland and the Netherlands, Zimbabwe have hit their stride as an outfit, Waller said.”We came a long way to here and we’ve had a good couple of weeks on tour now. I think we’re starting to gel really well now. Guys are getting good ideas, and it’s definitely a lot more positive in the camp. We’ve got good fighting spirits and everyone is getting on well. Everyone is helping each other and pushing on.”

'Team understands how to take the country forward' – du Plessis

Faf du Plessis is comfortable with the selection process in South African cricket and believes transformation targets are not stopping them from fielding their best teams. The South Africa Test captain was responding to fresh criticism by Graeme Pollock of a system that requires the national side to field a minimum average of six players of colour (including two black Africans) over the course of a season.Speaking at an event in London earlier this month, Pollock said South Africa would become a “middle of the road” Test team in future if the transformation policy remained in place. Du Plessis said he had not heard “the context in which Pollock was speaking” so it would be “unfair” to respond to Pollock personally but said that the team understood the policy.”We as a team understand what we need to do and how we need to take the country forward,” he said. “We get on with our business as usual. We play the best team and we try and win every game we play.”In 2016 the South African government banned four major sports – cricket, rugby, athletics and netball – from bidding for or hosting international events for not having done enough in terms of transformation. Each sport signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the sports ministry, the terms of which remain private. CSA has, however, made public the targets they decided to implement at national level and after exceeding them in the 2016-17 summer the ban was lifted.”The major thing is the problem with the politics and interference with the selection of players,” Pollock had originally said. “It’s affecting the performance of the side – they don’t put the 11 best players on the field. It’s never going to change. As South Africans, we’ve got to accept that South Africa are going to be middle of the road in their future Test cricket.”He took issue with the domestic set-up, where targets are applicable per match and require each franchise and provincial team to field six players of colour including three black Africans. Pollock said this created an inherently weak structure which produced below-par cricketers of all races.”You are going to pick a guy like Heino Kuhn, the opening batsman, who got a couple of hundreds in first-class cricket. He’s not good enough to play Test cricket. The guys are playing in a bad standard of first-class cricket in South Africa because of the politics and interference in selection.”A week after Pollock’s comments were first published, however, his spokesperson Basil O’Hagan issued a statement which claimed the quotes were “totally misconstrued”, issued an apology and said Pollock is in favour of transformation.”Graeme extends his sincerest apologies to CSA Board and the South African cricketing public for the manner in which his comments at recent function in London were totally misconstrued. Graeme fully supports the endeavours of the transformation process,” O’Hagan said. When asked by ESPNcricinfo which part of Pollock’s original statement was misconstrued, O’Hagan said he would not respond to every paragraph of the original article but called it “incorrect” as a whole. O’Hagan also said Pollock “maintains transformation is the way to correct decades of oppression of black South Africans and marginalisation of black cricketers.”The clarification did not prevent strong criticism from former Test player and current Cobras coach Ashwell Prince in the where Prince detailed his own struggles across a two-decade long career.”Pollock’s comments most definitely struck a nerve. Not just with myself, but it seems the overwhelming majority of South Africans. Quite frankly, as a former Protea, one has reached the point where you simply just cannot sit back and allow people with these kind of mindsets to keep feeding the world this kind of rubbish and just let it be,” Prince said.”People who were disadvantaged under the previous political regime simply have to be given opportunities which in the past were reserved for a privileged minority.”South Africa will have five players of colour in their side for the third Test against England at The Oval with Kagiso Rabada’s return following his suspension. They fielded four at Trent Bridge with JP Duminy dropped, but with the targets being assessed over a whole season whether they have been met or not for 2017-18 will not be known until after the home summer against Bangladesh, India and Australia.

Man United Have Now "Primed" Next Transfer After Onana

Manchester United have 'primed' Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund to be their next arrival at Old Trafford once a deal for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana is closed, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Rasmus Hojlund joining Manchester United?

Laurie Whitwell, who is a journalist for The Athletic, has given an update on the state of play surrounding Manchester United's latest bid for Hojlund being rejected, stating on Twitter: "MUFC proposed players in part-exchange during talks on Rasmus Hojlund. But Atalanta only want cash. United view £85m fee as excessive. Simultaneous pursuits for Hojlund + Andre Onana but fine balance on costs. Key negotiations on Onana taking place."

Last term, the Danish international shot to prominence at Serie A side Atalanta and has fired in ten goals and laid on four assists in 34 appearances for the club in all competitions since joining from Sturm Graz, as per Transfermarkt.

Renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed on Twitter as well that Hojlund is the Red Devils' top target this window to strengthen their forward line, adding: "Told Rasmus Højlund remains on top of Manchester United list as new striker. Personal terms, never an issue as he’s very keen on the move."

Atalanta are keen on taking Mason Greenwood on loan from Manchester United, though it is unclear whether there has been any talks of him being involved in a swap deal despite football director John Murtough holding talks with the Italian side over the controversial figure moving to the Bergamo-based outfit, as per talkSPORT.

The Red Devils have made progress in their move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Onana, who is said to have agreed personal terms over a move to Old Trafford, according to Football Insider.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Jones has said that Hojlund is now being 'primed' as the next potential incoming at Manchester United.

Jones stated: "In terms of Hojlund himself, this is the next transfer that has been primed by Man United, as the Onana one looks to go ahead.

"I think they are buoyed by the fact that Hojlund really does seem set on signing for them now.

"So I think everybody's hopeful that this one can come together. It's not far enough along that you can guarantee that that's the case at this point, but of course, with pre-season now about to get underway, you've only really got a couple of weeks to get your squad in place, and United’s forward options for the new season aren't going to be that deep.

"If they can find a scenario whereby Mason Greenwood goes to Italy, with Hojlund coming to the Premier League, it would be ideal.”

Who else could join Manchester United?

Manchester United are active in the market as Erik Ten Hag seeks to build a squad capable of reaching new heights this campaign and new addition Mason Mount has already given a taster to his new support by featuring in a 2-0 friendly victory over Leeds United in Oslo earlier this week, as per The Guardian.

A Bola via METRO report that Porto striker Mehdi Taremi is admired by Ten Hag as Manchester United continue to track the Iran international.

Porto's Mehdi Taremi

In a surprising turn of events, Manchester United are mooted to have made tentative contact with former Chelsea forward Joao Felix over the possibility of him coming to the North West from Atletico Madrid, as cited by ABC via The Daily Express.

Come the next few weeks, we will find out more about where Manchester United's priorities on the transfer front lie as the start of the season begins to draw closer.
