Ferguson could unleash his very own Kris Boyd in £25m Rangers "superstar"

After making a winning start to life as manager in mid-week, perhaps things are looking up for Rangers under Barry Ferguson.

This certainly didn’t appear to be the case for the Ibrox side 14 minutes into Wednesday’s clash, given that the Gers found themselves 2-0 down at Kilmarnock.

Nevertheless, goals from Václav Černý and then Nedim Bajrami, with Cyriel Dessers bagging a brace in-between, saw the Light Blues fight back and leave Rugby Park victorious.

This is the first time since 2010 that Rangers have won a Premiership away game in which they were two goals down, that comeback coming at Pittodrie under the legendary Walter Smith.

So now, ahead of Motherwell’s visit to Ibrox on Saturday and then, far more importantly, the upcoming Europa League last 16 tie against Fenerbahçe, has Ferguson found his own version of Kris Boyd, a duo who played 111 matches together, who can fire Rangers to victory in İstanbul?

Kris Boyd's Rangers legacy

Kris Boyd is a bona fide Rangers legend, having scored 126 goals for the club across two spells, on target, on average, every 118 minutes, winning two Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

Given that he also netted 132 times for Kilmarnock across three spells in Ayrshire, Boyd is the top-scorer in SPL history (1998-present), despite the fact, as Graham Ruthven of the Soccer 101 podcast puts it, ‘technically, Boyd wasn’t great’ but he was an ‘incredible finisher’, leading the line at a time when Rangers were extremely dominant.

So, here are all the players who have scored 100+ goals in SPFL top division history; it’s not a very long list but one that illuminates just how good Boyd was at the peak of his powers.

Boyd himself won the Premiership’s Golden Boot on five separate occasions, while his tally of 32 goals in the 2005/06 season, during which he joined from Killie in January, has only been bettered by one Rangers player, namely Ally McCoist in the early-90s, since WWII.

So, how this modern-day Rangers team would love to have an equally clinical finisher in their ranks, but could Ferguson have found his own version of Boyd?

Rangers' modern-day Kris Boyd

In an otherwise generally miserable season, Hamza Igamane has really shone.

He arrived from AS FAR in his native Morocco for just £1.7m last summer, earning rave reviews, hence why the CIES Football Observatory believe he is now worth more than £13m, representing almost an 800% increase in value.

Meantime, in January, amidst interest from Everton, it was reported that Rangers had set a £25m price tag on their star striker, which would be the club’s record outgoing transfer fee, currently held by Calvin Bassey’s £19.6m move to Ajax.

For now, the 22-year-old remains a Rangers player, described by Matthew Elder of the Scotsman as the Premiership’s ‘signing of the season’, while Keith Jackson also of the Daily Record, labels him a ‘superstar’ given his incredible form.

Scottish football writer Kai Watson simply believes Igamane to be ‘destined for big things’, encouraging Rangers supporters to ‘enjoy him while he’s here’.

Igamane has 13 goals to his name this season, memorably bagging a perfect hat-trick at Easter Road in January, while also on target four times during the Europa League league phase, and it is his European statistics we want to examine in more detail.

As the table outlines, and the reason why Igamane is being compared to Boyd, is the fact he is a clinical finisher.

He ranks second in this season’s Europa League for goals per 90, behind only Rasmus Højlund, while the final row of the table is the most interesting, given that he ranks first for goals – xG, scoring four times from a tiny expected goals figure of +1.1.

So, if Ferguson’s side are going to make any headway in Europe, they’ll need their Moroccan centre-forward to continue to be in fine form on the continent.

West Ham make offer for 104-career goal forward with £83m release clause

West Ham United have made an offer to sign a new forward for manager Graham Potter, according to the player’s agent.

West Ham eye new striker with permanent Ferguson deal unlikely

The Hammers brought in Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion back in January, however, the Republic of Ireland international is yet to score his first goal for the Irons.

The 20-year-old has only made five appearances and played just over 90 minutes for the Irons, and there have been reports that West Ham are unlikely to make Ferguson’s loan move permanent this summer.

As a result, the search for another new striker ahead of Potter’s first full season in charge at the London Stadium appears to be underway, and there has been a plethora of forwards linked with moves to West Ham.

AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham, currently on loan at AC Milan, has been explored by the Hammers, whereas Potter is keen on Lille striker Jonathan David, who is on course to become a free agent in the summer.

Meanwhile, an approach has been made for Fiorentina’s Moise Kean, formerly of Everton, but one name who will be familiar to Irons supporters and West Ham transfer chiefs is Yuri Alberto.

The Corinthians striker has long been linked with the Hammers and reports last month said that talks were open ahead of a potential move this summer. Alberto has an £83m release clause in his contract, but it has been claimed that he could be sold for an initial £21m over the coming months, which is a £62m mark down.

West Ham make offer to sign 104-goal Alberto, says agent

Now, a fresh update has been shared on West Ham and Alberto by his agent, Andre Cury. As relayed by Sport Witness, Cury said that West Ham have made an offer for Alberto, alongside Wolves and Real Betis.

“Our job is to take the proposal to the club. We have already had offers from Wolverhampton, West Ham, from Betis, from Spain, from Italy.

“But the player is young, every player who is in South America thinks of playing in Europe and with Yuri is no different. If there is a good opportunity that is good for him and for the club, we will talk.”

Alberto is under contract with Corinthians until 2027, but by the looks of things, he could be on the move in 2025. This year could finally be the time West Ham get their 104-career goal attacking target, making this one to watch.

'Chance to truly make history' – With Canada trending upward and rival USMNT competing with a depleted roster, Jesse Marsch 'fixated' on winning the 2025 Gold Cup

The ambitious Canadian men's national team coach made one thing clear – Les Rouges are at this tournament to win

It was a loss that gave Jesse Marsch hope for the first time. Canada didn’t equip themselves well against Mexico. They went down after 57 seconds, and although they dominated long periods of the play, lost 2-0 to a well-drilled side. That fixture was a classic act of falling short, slipping in the Nations League semifinal.

But for Marsch, that result in March was a sign that his Canada can compete in CONCACAF.

“I thought we were the better team in the first half, and then even up until the goal in the second half, Mexico barely crossed midfield,” Marsch told GOAL. “We were disappointed to lose that match, but when you just look at the performance itself, it was actually a positive.”

Perhaps that’s coach talk – a positive spin on a glorious failure. But talk to Marsch, listen to his carefully selected words, his drive and verve, and this is a man who believes what he’s saying. He’s now been in charge of the Canadian men's national team for a year, and heading into a Gold Cup that has suddenly become important, one thing is clear: Les Rouges are at this tournament to win.

“We believe that we're in the range of competing and winning that trophy,” he said. “And we're fixated on doing that.”

Imagn‘We will be comparing ourselves to them’

Since taking the Canada job, Marsch has gone about steadily relinquishing some of his American ties. In fact, the narrative around the Wisconsin native is one of a guy with a chip on his shoulder, criticizing his homeland from outside their borders. The former New York Red Bulls manager has positioned himself as very aware of the struggles of the U.S. men's national team – but entirely removed from them.

Repeatedly linked with the USMNT job, he was either spurned or withdrew himself from consideration, depending on which version of events you believe. Since then, he has undergone a dual act of rebuilding Canada’s national team, while making headlines for his comments about the USMNT from a distance.

outperformed the USMNT at Copa America – something he emphasized to GOAL on numerous occasions.

“We will be comparing ourselves to them. We want to go further. We want to do well for ourselves in the World Cup, but we want to do it again,” March admitted. “We did it in the Copa America.”

Marsch has few qualms about offering his often biting opinions about the state of the national team from the outside. He has been a repeated critic of U.S. soccer, appearing to question the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, who he had choice words about: “I don't think he has a real style, other than he's pragmatic.”

He has also been keenly aware, for example, of the split opinions around Christian Pulisic's decision not to play for the USMNT in the Gold Cup – something he referenced when reflecting on the commitment of his own side.

“There's been a certain dialogue with certain teams in the region about the Gold Cup and whether players want to come or not," he said. "I haven't had one discussion that's been like, 'Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm going to make it.' "

Outside of football, he hasn’t been quiet either. Marsch has expressed his disdain for President Donald Trump, and condemned rhetoric from the White House that has strained the relationship between the nations.

"As an American, I'm ashamed of the arrogance and disregard we've shown one of our historically oldest, strongest, and most loyal allies,” he said in February.

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport‘There's a lot more work to do’

Even if Marsch has endeared himself to Canadian fans by embracing the culture and poking holes in the concept of American exceptionalism, there have been some clear challenges.

The most obvious came in March, when Alphonso Davies tore his ACL in the third place match between Canada and the U.S. Bayern Munich, Davies’ club side, put out a scathing statement, criticizing Marsch and the Canadian national team for allowing Davies to play – claiming that the manager knew his star man wasn’t fit. Things got out of hand quickly, with back-and-forth PR battles, and Davies’ agent weighing in. Marsch, for his part, was eager to move on.

“We’re all disappointed that (Davies) experienced this injury, but we’re incredibly focused on making sure that we’re going to all support him in the right way,” he said in April. “We’re going to use the opportunity to get to know each other and be stronger with our communication.”

That’s not the only issue. The team's financial difficulties are well documented. When Marsch took the job, the national team was short of cash. His official title is MLS Canada Men’s National Team Head Coach – partially a nod to the importance of North America’s top-flight league, but mostly because that trio of Canadian MLS teams had to chip in to fill out his salary.

In January, when a number of CONCACAF federations – including the U.S. – hold training camps, Marsch was forced to cobble together what few players he had available for a series of sessions in Miami.

And then there's the fact Marsch won't actually be coaching the first two matches of the Gold Cup. CONCACAF sanctioned him for multiple incidents in Nations League. The federation levied a one-game suspension for "unacceptable conduct towards the match officials and for delaying the restart of the match by refusing to leave the field of play."

That was added to the single-game suspension he was already set to serve after receiving a straight red card in the third-place match. As a result, Marsch will miss for Canada's matches against Honduras and Curaçao. The manager said he had zero regrets.

"If I had to do it again, I would," Marsch said after the suspension was levied, "It's not like I went into the game thinking, 'OK, I'm going to get thrown out.' "But I was definitely looking for opportunities to make a point."

Despite those issues, there is plenty of upside when he looks at his own roster.

Jonathan David has developed into a No. 9 coveted by top European clubs, and in Marsch’s words, “the smartest player I have ever coached.” There are others, too. Moise Bombito has come into his own at center-back, while Tajon Buchanan is realizing his potential as a wide attacking presence. Marsch insists that’s just the start, though.

“There's a lot more work to do," he said. "Feeling proud is great, but the relentlessness to continue to push for improvements and to continue to move things forward, is really the overwhelming feeling that I have."

Getty'Do they really feel Canadian?'

To compound that core of reliable talent, the manager has looked beyond Canadian borders to think about the future.

Part of the key to the success has been Marsch’s shrewd usage of the player pool. Canada is enjoying a rich vein of talent (Marsch refuses to call it a golden generation.) Perhaps the real key, though, has been taking a page out of the American playbook and exploring opportunities with dual-nationals.

It’s become a point of controversy in the United States, the polarizing pinching of talent that could play for multiple nations. Marsch has no problem with doing so – but admits that there are some non-negotiables. Chief among them: they have to be proud to wear the shirt.

“In their blood, do they really feel Canadian? And are they honored to be part of this? And, and that's been a lot of the discussion with all of them,” he said.

The process is exhaustive. Marsch had a few names in mind when he took the job. Some agents also reached out with pitches. And then there were the surprise ones.

Victor Orta was Marsch’s director of football during his 12 months as manager at Leeds. He got in touch with Marsch after seeing his Sevilla side matched up against a 6-5 forward in a preseason friendly. A year later, that No. 9, Promise David, was bagging goals for fun for Union SG in the Belgian League. After numerous conversations with Marsch – and plenty of chatter in social media – he pledged his international future to Canada in February 2025.

It has taken a lot of Zoom calls, too. Consider Gabe Biancheri, a jewel of the Man United academy born in Cardiff, Wales but with Italian and Canadian heritage. Marsch had conversations with both him and his parents to see if Canada would be the right fit.

“His dad is Italian, like, full of the accent and Italian and everything. And his mom is fully Canadian. So then talking to them about how they feel about it, what they think, and then also hearing what Gabe thinks,” he said. “These are fun conversations to think about the potential of what some of these young, talented people would mean to being part of the Canadian setup.”

Biancheri was also recruited by Wales, and hadn’t set foot in Canada until early June. But he had the heritage and cultural understanding. More importantly, though, Marsch insisted he would jell with the group – and deemed him the right fit.

The manager’s allure was enough. His current crop will back that up.

Veteran midfielder Samuel Piette told GOAL that Marsch has taken his game to another level. Jacob Shaffelburg, a workmanlike midfielder at Nashville, broke out at the 2024 Copa America, and gave Marsch all of the credit.

“Since Day 1, he's kind of understood what type of player I am, what I need to succeed, and everything he needs to do to help me get to where I should be,” Shaffelburg said.

Getty Images Sport'We really want to do something special'

It’s a good thing, too, with the World Cup coming up.

Canada are co-hosts of the tournament alongside the United States and Mexico, and Marsch will be expected to put on a show. The draw won’t take place until December, but Canada have already been assigned a schedule. He knows that if they top their grou, they could play two more games at home. It would be massive for the country.

“We really want to do something special, we want to stay on Canadian soil, and we want to engage our fan group, and continue to have a true home field advantage, and make sure that we give our, give ourselves to truly a chance to truly make history," he said.

Marsch says he never feels pressure. But he knows it comes with the territory.

“It's more internal pressure that we're putting on ourselves," he said. "It's a necessary and needed challenge, but it's like a welcomed challenge. I don't have to come to the meeting here and bring our 23 guys together and go, ‘Hey guys, do you think we should try to win this tournament?’”

He picked up six wickets in the first Test in Hyderabad, which India lost by 28 runs.Meanwhile, India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also made big gains among Test batters. His England counterpart Zak Crawley also had a good Test, scoring 76 and 73 to climb eight spots to No. 22.Kane Williamson continues to occupy the top spot among Test batters, having cracked 118 and 109 in the first Test against South Africa in Mount Maunganui.

Thunder won the toss and elected to field in cool and overcast conditions in a notable change to oppressive recent weather in Perth.Heat’s fortunes of a revival seemingly rested on opener Grace Harris, who had gone off the boil recently mirroring her team’s spiral. With her half-century in sight, Harris on the next ball attempted another lusty blow but she mistimed to deep midwicket. But she struggled to find rhythm on a hard surface and was left rattled after a disastrous mix-up saw opener Tahlia Wilson run out in the eighth over. But the dismissal seemed to ignite Athapaththu, who went after left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen with decisive footwork. She was less assured against pace and it proved her downfall on 41 when Athapaththu succumbed to a well-targeted delivery from Sippel. When Kerr had Phoebe Litchfield caught and bowled, Thunder slumped to 61 for 3 at the halfway point and they never recovered as Heat lived to fight another day.

£300,000-a-week Man City star on chopping block in horde of summer exits

Manchester City and Pep Guardiola could sanction the departure of an “incredible” £300,000-a-week player this summer, as the club plan an overhaul of the squad, according to a Sky Sports journalist.

Man City reach seven FA Cup semi-finals in a row

The Blues secured their place in the last four of England’s oldest competition on Sunday afternoon, as they came from a goal down to beat AFC Bournemouth 2-1. The FA Cup represents City’s only chance of winning silverware this season, and Guardiola believes his side were “outstanding” in their win over the Cherries.

He was saved by O'Reilly: Pep must drop 4/10 Man City dud after Bournemouth

Man City won their FA Cup semi-final 2-1 on Sunday

ByJoe Nuttall Mar 31, 2025

“It was harder for them [Bournemouth]. We played an outstanding game and had incredible chances but missed a penalty. We conceded with one chance we gave away. Our approach was magnificent. Seven times in a row in the semi-final in the FA Cup, no team has done it, and it will be difficult for any other to do what these legendary players, the new ones and the old ones, will have done,” Guardiola told the BBC.

Pep was then asked about City reaching the FA Cup semi-finals for a seventh consecutive season, and he labelled it an “unbelievable” achievement.

It is unbelievable. The way we competed today compared to the way we played in the first game here [in the Premier League]. I was not good enough to overcome that situation then. We were sloppy for many games, and I was not able to let them realise is what they have done today. For example, Brighton was a difficult game; we didn’t play our best, but we fought. This is what had to happen.”

Man City could sanction Grealish exit as Pep plans busy summer

Despite possible success in the FA Cup, it has been a poor campaign for the Blues, and therefore, there is expected to be plenty of incomings and outgoings come the summer.

According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man City could look to sell Jack Grealish this summer as the Blues plan a busy summer of change.

Plettenberg states that City are planning a squad overhaul in the summer, and with them holding an interest in players such as Florian Wirtz and Hugo Larsson, the likes of İlkay Gündoğan and Kevin De Bruyne are likely departures when their contracts expire, while Grealish could also be moved on despite his not ending until 2026.

Grealish, who earns £300,000 a week at the Etihad Stadium, has struggled for regular game time this season, playing just 16 times in the Premier League, six of which have been starts, and the last one came in the defeat to Aston Villa back in December.

Despite the lack of game time, Guardiola has continued to heap praise on the Englishman, labelling him “incredible”.

Imad Wasim was United’s hero, having turned back the years to deliver a sensational all-round performance, taking five wickets before ensuring he was out in the middle to watch Hunain Shah angle the final delivery behind point to seal United’s third title. If the drama of last year’s epic final – which Sultans lost by a run – could not be eclipsed, it was certainly emulated in Karachi today. United appeared to have won that final at several stages through both innings, never more than when they reduced the Sultans to 127 for 9. But Iftikhar Ahmed’s cameo – an unbeaten 32 off 20 balls, got the Sultans to 159, a total that a stellar bowling attack felt they just about had the personnel to defend. And what a defence they mounted. United opened the batting with two 37-year old New Zealanders, having dropped the out-of-form Alex Hales, even if Colin Munro was clearly still struggling with the leg injury that kept him out of the previous three games. While Martin Guptill made the most of the Powerplay, clean timing and pure power on full display, Sultans chipped away from the other end, bogging United down with a slew of spinners on a surface that had begun to grip.Martin Guptill goes on the attack during his half-century•PCB

Khushdil Shah’s twin strikes removed Munro and Salman Ali Agha, before, at some point impossible to define, what should have been a cakewalk became a grind. Shadab Khan, supremely assured with bat all tournament, attempted a panicked slog after an unconvincing start off Iftikhar, and paid for it with his wicket. Azam Khan struggled to get going, and even Guptill was being dragged back to earth as nerves began to shackle the most fluid team in the PSL.But there’s only one way United know how to get out of trouble, and Azam and Guptill began to free their arms once more. Guptill scythed down Usama Mir, the leading wicket-taker of the tournament, with two sixes and a four, before Azam plundered 15 off a wayward Chris Jordan over, and the pendulum swung again. But it was never going to be straightforward, and a mix-up between the pair saw Guptill depart after a swashbuckling half-century. David Willey, perhaps this year’s stand-out fast bowler, struck to put down Haider Ali, whose power-hitting in the eliminator got United to this stage. Iftikhar, whose contribution so often this evening looked as if it would be decisive, prised out Faheem Ashraf, the man who, six years ago, had struck the six that sealed United’s last title, and suddenly, all that was left was Imad and the tail.Late on in the first innings, Imad had sneaked into the dressing-room to have a quick smoke, but there was no getting away from the stress he was under now. A decisive battle between Iftikhar and Naseem Shah, and then Jordan and Imad, in the 18th and 19th overs finally looked to have tipped the game off the tightrope it had been walking until then, with 23 off those two overs bringing the equation down to eight off six. A clip through mid-on brought the game down to below a run-a-ball, and a pair of singles levelled the scores. But the drama just wouldn’t end. Naseem miscued a pull shot with the ball kissing the edge, and as one Shah walked off, his younger brother Hunain was tasked with finishing the job off. And while he looked like the calmest man as he poked it through the infield to seal the win, the sobs he broke into afterwards belied the steely front the 20-year old had put on.Imad Wasim took a five-wicket haul in the final•PCB

But though United’s win was ultimately wild and frenetic, how they set it up in the first innings was its polar opposite. A gameplan that was designed craftily was executed to perfection, using Imad and Shadab in the powerplay to smother a Sultans top order that has looked imperious all the way through this season. Mohammad Rizwan would have fallen in the first over but for an overstepped Naseem right boot, while Yasir Khan was deceived in the flight by a canny Imad the following over. Sultans’ attempt at a low-value wicket saw them send in Willey, but he would last just three balls, a hoick followed by a chop that rattled into the stumps.Usman Khan has been the Sultans’ unlikely standout batting star, but United refused to let any batter truly gain momentum. Naseem accuracy was metronomic and his pace fearsome, so while he never picked up a wicket, his first three overs went for just nine. It was built around eight overs of devastating spin from Shadab and Imad, who picked up eight wickets between them, including a collapse that saw the Sultans lose 5 wickets in 12 balls and teeter on the brink at 127.But United hadn’t quite managed to account for Iftikhar, the man with the highest strike-rate this tournament, and he made sure to save his best for last. Slogging with the magical freedom that clarity of thoughts can give you, he walloped Mills for 13, and then an otherwise faultless Naseem for 18 in the final over to get his side up to 159, a below-par score, but not an indefensible one. He had held up his end of the bargain with both bat and ball, but his team-mates had built up a debt he could, despite his best efforts never truly pay off. And when United came to collect, they ensured they took the silverware with them.
