Manager open to immediate Tottenham talks after missing out on Man United

One manager appears very attracted by the prospect of a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur, after the tactician missed out on the Man United job to Ruben Amorim.

Tottenham's list of rumoured managerial targets

Ange Postecoglou could be facing his final few weeks as Spurs boss, according to some reports, as there is a growing belief the Australian could be sacked regardless of their success in Europe.

The Telegraph reported last week that Postecoglou is heading for the Spurs exit door, and it may not even tie in with their Europa League campaign, even if the Lilywhites do end up winning their first piece of major silverware since 2008.

Chairman Daniel Levy reportedly has numerous candidates under consideration to succeed Postecoglou, including Domestically, Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth), Marco Silva (Fulham), Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace), Thomas Frank (Brentford) and Scott Parker (Burnley), who have all been linked in the last few weeks.

Even Carlo Ancelotti, Jürgen Klopp and Xabi Alonso have been internally discussed as managerial options by Tottenham chiefs, according to GiveMeSport, but the trio may be very hard to tempt to N17, especially as Real Madrid are currently blocking an exit for their head coach.

Spurs may have to temper their expectations when it comes to high-profile coaches of Ancelotti’s ilk, but a readily-available head coach with Champions League and trophy-winning experience comes in the form of ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Edin Terzić.

The German left Dortmund after guiding them to an unexpected Champions League final last season, where they lost to Real Madrid, and won two major trophies during his time in the Bundesliga.

Terzic was mentioned as a potential target for Spurs back in January, and links have now resurfaced from his homeland.

Edin Terzić "would be immediately open to discussions" with Tottenham

It comes courtesy of newspaper Sport Bild, who report, via Sport Witness, that Terzic “would be immediately open to discussions” with Tottenham if the north Londoners come forward with an offer.

The 59-year-old rejected opportunities at Besiktas, West Ham and AC Milan in the last year, but was open to the Man United job before he ultimately watched Amorim take the reins at Old Trafford instead.

He’s now keen on a potential opening at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and he’s hungry to get back into management. Terzic is said to be taking advice from legendary ex-head coaches like Arsène Wenger in preparation for his next job, spending several weeks in Spain, Italy and England recently to watch as many top flight encounters as possible.

Liverpool plan talks to sign £55m ace who’s "among the best" in the world

da dobrowin: Liverpool are believed to be planning talks with an “extraordinary” player over a move to Anfield at the end of the season, according to a new transfer claim.

Liverpool win historic 20th league title

da pixbet: The Reds clinched a 20th league title on Sunday afternoon, being crowned Premier League champions after an unforgettable 5-1 win at home to Tottenham. Despite falling behind to a goal from former Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke, Arne Slot’s side turned things around in style, putting on a show in front of a euphoric Anfield and celebrating in emotional fashion after the final whistle.

It is a stunning achievement by Slot in his first season in charge of the Reds, with the Dutchman not allowing himself to feel the pressure of replacing Jurgen Klopp last summer, guiding his team to glory in the process.

Once the dust has settled on a memorable season, however, Liverpool will be well aware that a busy summer transfer window is required. The newly-crowned champions may be an excellent side, but there are still areas of focus ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, with reinforcements required to help them defend their title.

Liverpool planning talks to sign Ademola Lookman

According to an update from Caught Offside, Liverpool are “planning to hold talks” with Atalanta attacker Ademola Lookman over a summer switch to Anfield. They are not alone, however, with Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle and Arsenal all mentioned in the update, too. The 27-year-old’s club will be demanding up to £55m for his services.

Atalanta's AdemolaLookmanin action

Lookman has been mentioned as a target for Liverpool in the past, and it is easy to see why Slot and Richard Hughes could view him as a strong addition this summer. The former Everton attacker has excelled in an Atalanta shirt, most notably scoring a hat-trick in their 3-0 win against Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen in last season’s Europa League final.

The Nigerian has scored 50 goals in just 115 appearances for the Serie A side, as well as registering 24 assists, and his current manager, Gian Piero Gasperini, has lauded his ability in the past.

‘He’s [Lookman] a top player. In terms of character, there are perhaps players who have more continuity and are more solid, but that’s normal. Even his role is difficult. He always has to be very fit, but he has become a truly extraordinary player, among the best in Europe and the world. Because he has improved his consistency and in some ways he has started to be an important Atalanta player.”

Lookman has generally operated as a centre forward for Atalanta, even though he can also shine out wide, and if Liverpool’s recruitment team believe he is an upgrade on the likes of Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez to lead the line next season, they need to be trusted.

Rodgers already has Celtic's dream McGregor replacement out on loan

Celtic were given a timely reminder that they still have areas to improve on after they were beaten 3-2 by their city rivals in the Scottish Premiership in the last match before the international break.

The Hoops came from 2-0 down against Rangers to bring the score back to 2-2 at Parkhead last weekend, only for Hamza Igamane to deliver a crushing blow with two minutes to go.

Brendan Rodgers will surely have been disappointed with the performance of his side in the loss, despite it only cutting the gap between the two teams to 13 points in the table.

The performance, however, was mitigated by the absence of club captain Callum McGregor in the middle of the park, as he missed out on the game through injury.

Why Callum McGregor is important to Celtic

The former Scotland international is an important player to Celtic and Rodgers because he sits in the number six position and dictates the flow of matches for the club.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game

He can control the game as a metronomic midfield presence for the Hoops, speeding it up or slowing it down with the pace of his passes and his decisions in possession.

McGregor leads the club’s midfielders for passes made per game (78) and pass accuracy (94%) in the Premiership this season, which illustrates just how important he is to the team.

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

Arne Engels, in his absence, only completed 51 passes – with a success rate of 88% – in an unfamiliar role, as the Belgian ace is usually more advanced as one of the two number eights.

Celtic do not appear to have a natural successor to the 31-year-old McGregor in the squad, but they could find a dream long-term replacement in Odin Thiago Holm – who is currently out on loan.

Why Odin Thiago Holm could replace Callum McGregor

It is fair to say that Holm’s time with Celtic has not gone as expected since Rodgers claimed that he could “make a big impact” at Parkhead upon his move to the club from Valerenga in the summer of 2023.

The Norwegian starlet has only played 16 times in the first-team to date and was sent out on loan to MLS side LAFC for the 2025 season, which means that he is due to return to Scotland in January of next year.

Holm has mainly played as a central or defensive midfield player in his career and this means that he could suit playing as a number six under Rodgers as the deepest-lying midfield player in a 4-3-3.

However, the 22-year-old maestro has not had many chances to showcase his quality on the pitch, as an injury delayed his MLS debut for LAFC until Saturday’s win over Kansas City.

As you can see in the table above, the midfield prospect also did not get many opportunities to shine in the Premiership for Celtic in the 2023/24 campaign, but there were promising signs with his defensive and offensive contributions.

Holm has the potential to offer plenty of defensive action, with tackles and interceptions, whilst also creating chances for his teammates in that role, if he can translate those into consistent performances over an entire season.

It is now down to him to enjoy a strong year with LAFC in the MLS to prove to Rodgers that he has what it takes to be the long-term successor to McGregor, because he seemingly has the attributes to be a dream replacement in the future if he can piece it all together.

Vishwa, Kamindu, de Silva leave Sri Lanka on brink of big win

Bangladesh’s top-order imploded late in the day when beginning their chase of 511

Andrew Fidel Fernando24-Mar-2024Bangladesh 188 and 43 for 5 (Vishwa 3-13) need another 464 runs to beat Sri Lanka 280 and 418 (Kamindu 164, de Silva 108, Miraz 4-74)Bangladesh nosedived in the dying moments of day three in Sylhet, losing five wickets for 43 runs in 13 overs before stumps. The slump though came when Bangladesh were anyway in a dire situation. Earlier in the day, Kamindu Mendis had struck 164 and Dhananjaya de Silva had also completed his second hundred of the match, leaving the hosts with an improbable 511 target to chase.Still, their dramatic collapse has left Sri Lanka needing just five wickets in two scheduled days of play. There is some rain forecast for Monday afternoon, but Sylhet’s weather otherwise looks conducive for cricket. Sri Lanka will feel they are on the brink of a rollicking victory.Sri Lanka’s quicks delivered testing lines on a pitch that still rewarded high-quality seam bowling. Vishwa Fernando got movement through the air, and Lahiru Kumara and Kasun Rajitha gained zip off the surface. Vishwa bowled some especially good balls, particularly to Mahmudul Hasan Joy, whom he trapped in front in the first over with a ball that swung late, straightened, and would have hit leg stump, as well as to Shahadat Hossain, who played and missed his first two balls and edged the third one behind. All up, Vishwa’s take for the day was 3 for 13 from his seven overs. Rajitha and Kumara took a wicket apiece. But there was indiscipline from Bangladesh too. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was out fifth ball, throwing his bat at a full delivery that had pitched more than half-a-metre wide of off stump. Then, the last wicket to fall was that of Litton Das, who having kept wicket all day, ran down the track first ball he faced, and played a giant hoick across the line to Kumara. Predictably, he top-edged it, and was caught metres from the pitch by the incoming cover fielder. Before Bangladesh’s batting imploded, however, Sri Lanka’s lower middle order had thrived yet again. De Silva and Kamindu had rescued Sri Lanka from 57 for 5 in the first innings with a 202-run stand. Though the team was better-placed on this occasion – 222 runs ahead with four wickets in hand – their 173-run partnership on Sunday nevertheless transformed the game’s outlook, turning Sri Lanka’s good position into an utterly dominant one.Although Kamindu was somewhat circumspect to begin with, scoring just five off his first 20 balls, both batters progressed smoothly, after coming together in the third over of the day (Khaled Ahmed had removed nightwatcher Vishwa with a sharp bouncer). With the ball almost 40 overs old, Bangladesh’s quicks were not getting much lateral movement. And the spinners were not getting purchase off the wicket.Although the pitch had plenty of pace and bounce still, it had eased to some extent, and both de Silva and Kamindu were quick to spot the length, and played the pull with particular ease. Their scoring areas were mostly square of the wicket with only the occasional boundary coming down the ground. They attacked in bursts too, to really impose themselves on the opposition, In an eight-over period starting with the 47th of the innings, the pair clattered 56 runs. Through that passage, Kamindu collected consecutive boundaries off Nahid Rana, before de Silva flat-batted the same bowler past mid on two balls later. Then, next over, de Silva clobbered Mehidy Hasan’s offspin for two slog-swept sixes. Bangladesh’s attack had been rendered flat, and they never really recovered. The second and third sessions saw Sri Lanka picking their way through milestones. De Silva got to his 12th career century off the 164th ball he faced, though he was out soon after for 108. Kamindu completed his second Test ton off the 171st ball, then later brought up 150 with a slogged six over long on off the bowling of Taijul Islam. He was the last Sri Lanka batter to fall, with de Silva not willing to declare, perhaps because there was so much time left in the game. By the time he holed out, Kamindu had struck six sixes.Bangladesh had had some chances, but these came fairly late in these batters’ innings. De Silva should have been out on 94 when he played at a Mehidy delivery that ended up in the hands of the wicketkeeper Litton. But neither keeper nor bowler spotted that de Silva had gloved the ball, and failed to appeal. Kamindu was also dropped by Litton (a tough chance), off Mehidy, on 133. The easiest chance was shelled by Rana running back from midwicket, when de Silva had top-edged a pull off Shoriful Islam.Of Bangladesh’s bowlers, Rana was by far the most expensive, having struggled for line throughout the day. He leaked 128 off his 20 overs. Mehidy was the most successful, claiming 4 for 74 from his 29 overs.

CSK's batting v Sunrisers' bowling? Not anymore

Holes appeared in the Sunrisers attack in the latter part of their league campaign while CSK have suddenly discovered a potent new-ball pairing

Vishal Dikshit in Mumbai21-May-2018If you stopped following Sunrisers Hyderabad or Chennai Super Kings after they secured their playoffs berths, you will probably think nothing has changed. Sunrisers still top the table, CSK are right behind them, and they will face off in the first Qualifier on Tuesday. So it’s still all about CSK’s batting against Sunrisers’ bowling, right? Not really. The last stretch of their journeys have been fairly contrasting. At the start, CSK were seen as a deep batting unit with a spin-heavy attack, so they may have wanted to play on turning pitches in Pune, their adopted home. Instead, they had surfaces with pace and bounce. Now, at the end of the league phase, their top four wicket-takers are all pace bowlers.Sunrisers, meanwhile, had the bowling arsenal to defend low totals and bowl oppositions out. However, in their last three matches, each of which they lost, they managed only two wickets against CSK, conceded more than 200 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, and could not defend 172 at home against Kolkata Knight Riders. The tides have clearly turned.Shardul Thakur leads CSK’s wicket charts (14), but is now being used as first- or second-change because their top swing bowler Deepak Chahar is back from injury and Lungi Ngidi’s wicket-taking ability has only improved with each match.Their combined bowling show on Sunday night against Kings XI Punjab summed up their last few matches – banana outswing with precision from one end and raw pace and bounce from the other to strangle batsmen upfront. They also hardly concede runs; Ngidi’s economy rate stands at a stingy 6.11 from five matches and Chahar’s at 7.35 from 10. CSK’s attack has been so disciplined that Chahar’s no-ball on Sunday was their first such indiscretion this season.ESPNcricinfo Ltd”It’s been nothing short of amazing,” Ngidi told of his first taste of the IPL. “Having come here initially, it was going to be a learning experience for me. I didn’t expect to play as much as I have so it’s been great to get out on the field, see how different players think in different situations.”Originally getting here, I was a bit down on myself and went through a bit of trouble with my family (he went home early in the tournament after his father died), but the environment here has really uplifted me and the fan support has really made me enjoy my IPL here.”The turnaround has lent balance to CSK, with their pace battery outperforming Sunrisers’ in recent matches despite dealing with several 30-plus players and a few niggles. Sunrisers lost Billy Stanlake to injury early in the tournament, but Sandeep Sharma filled that void pretty well. Their attack looked a little shaky without Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s experience when he was injured, but they haven’t recovered properly even after his return. He has picked up only two wickets in five matches since returning to the XI, going wicketless three times and leaking at least 33 runs on four occasions. Against Delhi Daredevils, he was taken apart by Rishabh Pant (43 runs of 11 balls). When Sunrisers had to defend 179 against CSK, openers Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu treated Bhuvneshwar with disdain in his first two spells as he finished with figures of 4-0-38-0.While all this has happened, opponents have found a way to not lose the plot against Rashid Khan. He has gone wicketless in three of his last four games and when he took 3 for 27 in the other, RCB targeted the remaining bowlers to amass 218. CSK decided to see him off while chasing 180, collecting 10 dots against him even as Rayudu scored a century when these sides last met. There’s also the added concern now over Siddarth Kaul. When the other Sunrisers bowlers would be carted for runs earlier, he would invariably deliver breakthroughs. Not anymore. Could it be fatigue? Rashid (56 overs) has bowled more than anyone else in the tournament – joint with Andrew Tye – and Kaul (55) is third. In nine matches, Bhuvneshwar has bowled only one over less than his maximum possible 36 overs.BCCIThe batting too has had its fair share of challenges. Sunrisers have not been able to find support for Kane Williamson in the middle order, relying almost completely on him for big scores, especially in David Warner’s absence. A small positive for them is Shikhar Dhawan’s form, but that also means the bulk of their scoring comes from the top order. If Ngidi and Chahar can make early breakthroughs as they did against Kings XI on Sunday night, Sunrisers will need some serious repair work from Manish Pandey and co.To add to their woes, Sunrisers have dropped more catches than any other team until now, and CSK’s conversion rate has been the best. Out of 77 attempts, Sunrisers have held on to only 72.7% of the chances whereas CSK’s number stands at 82.7% out of 75 attempts. Even though Sunrisers have saved more runs in the field with a side younger than CSK’s, Dhoni’s team has shown better nerves when the ball has taken the aerial route.Come Tuesday night, Sunrisers will have more kinks to straighten out than CSK. How they fared in their last league games is also reflective of their moods. The Sunrisers middle order managed only four fours and a six in all against KKR, and Bhuvneshwar and Rashid went wicketless.CSK, on the other hand, played as if they were on the beach with their feet up. They dismantled the Kings XI top order before Dhoni infused some chaos while watching the fun from afar, not too different from what Heath Ledger’s character The Joker did in . Dhoni could very well use his dialogue too, in the presentation, with his trademark smile: “Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I’m an agent of chaos.”

Not just Rice: Arsenal's 8/10 star showed why he'd walk into Madrid's XI

Arsenal booked their place in the Champions League semi-final last night with a sensational 2-1 win over defending champions Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

The victory secured a 5-1 aggregate win, putting a stop to the Spanish outfit’s chances of making it back-to-back European triumphs after their win at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund last season.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli’s second-half strikes were enough for Mikel Arteta’s men to advance to the next stage of the competition, subsequently setting up a tie with French giants PSG.

It was a superb showing from the Gunners in Madrid, restricting Carlo Ancelotti’s side to limited opportunities and preventing his star-studded side from making yet another miraculous comeback.

Numerous players starred during the victory, playing a pivotal role in their chances of landing their first-ever European trophy in the coming months.

Arsenal’s star performers against Real Madrid

Mikel Merino once again started as Arsenal’s main centre-forward, not looking out of place and producing yet another impressive showing at the top end of the pitch.

The Spaniard registered two assists in the win and completed four passes into the final third, providing numerous opportunities for other attackers, as seen by his assist tally.

Declan Rice picked up where he left off from the first leg, completing 96% of the passes he attempted, three of which were into the final third, starring with the ball at his feet.

Out of possession, the 26-year-old was just as impressive, winning 100% of the tackles he entered, whilst making four interceptions, restricting the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior for large spells.

Despite the showings of the aforementioned duo, one other player hugely impressed at the Bernabeu – easily walking into Madrid’s side after such a showing.

The 8/10 Arsenal star who showed he would walk into Madrid’s team

For many years, Madrid have been the golden boys of European football, as seen by their tally of 15 titles – the most of any side in the competition’s history.

Six of their victories have come since 2010, but Arteta’s side produced an incredible showing over two legs to stop their chances of extending their record as the most successful side in history.

Given the stature of the club, only the best talents in the world could be able to cement their place in the squad, but Gunners full-back Jurrien Timber certainly wouldn’t look out of place within their side.

The Dutchman produced a sensational showing against the Spanish outfit last night, arguably his best since returning to action after missing the majority of his debut season through injury.

Timber featured for 89 minutes of the clash, limiting Vini Jr to minimal chances throughout the contest, making four recoveries to stop their Brazilian.
