The wavering Test trajectory of Dhananjaya de Silva

If it has baffled fans that a player of such obvious talent has faltered so often, it has been a frustrating journey for the Sri Lanka batsman himself as well

Andrew Fidel Fernando23-Jan-2019Fifth ball of his Test career, no runs yet to his name, Dhananjaya de Silva slinked out of his crease, and with a languid swing of the bat, stroked Steve O’Keefe over the long-off boundary. They were spectacular first runs; it would turn out to be a spectacular first series.Though de Silva made only 24 in that innings, he gathered momentum through the course of Sri Lanka’s whitewash over Australia; a rising ocean swell. His 129 in the third Test was a meeting of grace and grit. The score had been 26 for 5, when he arrived at the crease on the first morning. He faced down Australia’s rampant bowlers until lunch, then set about unfurling his array of velvet shots. From among Sri Lanka’s batsmen, Kusal Mendis had gained the greatest acclaim for his sublime 176 in the first match, but it was de Silva who finished the top scorer across the bowler-dominated series, having hit 325 runs at an average of 65.Roughly two-and-a half years later, de Silva has played 18 further Tests, but has seen his average almost halve. Touted then as a 10,000-run player, partly because of the ease with which he quelled a ferocious Mitchell Starc, there has been a struggle to live up to that early promise. Not that there haven’t been glimpses of brilliance – his second-innings 119 in the pollution-affected game in Delhi, saved that Test, for example. But in between have been: long, dry stretches. Before the Delhi hundred, he had gone 12 innings without a half-century. Last year, he crossed fifty only four times in 19 innings. If it has baffled fans that a player of such obvious talent has faltered so often, it has been a frustrating journey for de Silva himself as well. A multitude of Sri Lanka players have been mismanaged over the past three years – in which three separate coaches have held the reins, and three different selection committees have stood – but de Silva might plausibly claim to have had the toughest run of things. Shunted from position to position in the batting order, he’s played everywhere from No. 3 to No. 9, and has never been persevered with in a single position for more than a handful of innings. Often, he has found himself out of the XI altogether, only to be flung back into a new batting spot whenever an injury or suspension has ruled out one of the others. There has been no sense of long-term strategy; where with the likes of Mendis, Sri Lanka have taken at least some care to not disturb his development, de Silva has essentially been expendable. Where is the gap in the top order? That is where de Silva bats.Dhananjaya de Silva’s ill-advised paddle brought his downfall•Getty ImagesAs Sri Lanka now prepare to play Australia again for the first time since de Silva’s maiden series, events may have conspired to return de Silva to the batting positions he had excelled in two-and-a-half years ago. He didn’t play Sri Lanka’s second Test in New Zealand, because typically, he had had a poor outing at No. 3 in the first Test – having received two outstanding deliveries from Tim Southee – and was dropped in favour of Roshen Silva. But now, with Angelo Mathews’ fragile hamstring having ruled him out, a middle-order spot is open once more. Though he has most frequently batted at No. 3 – having played 11 of his 41 innings there – it is at No. 6 and 7 that de Silva has clearly had the most success, averaging 45.66 and 43 respectively. He is an opener at first-class level for Tamil Union Cricket Club (weirdly, opener is the only real batting position Sri Lanka have not trialled de Silva in, despite having struggled to find a partner for Dimuth Karunaratne over the past two years), but in internationals, particularly overseas, where the new ball presents a much sterner challenge, it is possible de Silva’s batting is too adventurous for him to succeed in the top order. Lower down, where he can expect to face less swing, particularly from this Australia attack that has recently struggled to take wickets with the older ball, de Silva could find himself in the most suitable batting habitat he has enjoyed in some time.If he gets to play from the lower-middle order – and although it seems likely, there is no guarantee – de Silva will hope he can defuse Starc and Nathan Lyon as he had done at home. He’ll know better than anyone else by now that if he wants to keep his spot, results have to be more or less immediate.

Barcelona icon Stoichkov has publicly thrown his weight behind Yamal as the frontrunner for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, declaring he would personally present the award if the youngster wins it. Speaking on , the 1994 Ballon d’Or winner praised Yamal’s brilliance while also offering a reminder that the teenager still has "a long way to go." Stoichkov also named several other standout players, including PSG’s Marquinhos and Vitinha, as serious contenders for the prize.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 17-year-old dazzled in a title-winning season with Barca lifting La Liga, Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana to earn his place among the top contenders for the prize. However, the Bulgarian legend believes the final podium will likely feature names from either Barca or PSG, with Vitinha and Marquinhos leading the latter challenge. If Yamal gets it, he would be the youngest Ballon d’Or winner in history, beating Brazil and Real Madrid legend Ronaldo, who won it at 21 in 1997.

  • WHAT STOICHKOV SAID

The Barca legend pledged to present the trophy himself if the teenager wins: “If he wins it, I'll give it to him personally.”

While full of praise, Stoichkov reminded fans that Yamal is still just getting started: “Lamine Yamal is a very young boy who has a long way to go.” Despite his youth, he was unequivocal about Yamal’s talent: “I really enjoy watching him because he has so many interesting qualities.”

Yet the former Ballon d’Or winner also acknowledged there’s strong competition for the honour, singling out PSG stars for their standout seasons: “If you tell me today that PSG's Marquinhos is the one to take him, I'd believe you too. Then we have Vitinha, who has also played fantastically this year. He had a spectacular championship in France and a spectacular Champions League. There are many players ready to win it.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR LAMINE YAMAL?

Yamal will focus on coming back from the summer break to continue his meteoric rise ahead of the Ballon d’Or gala in September. Whether or not he lifts the award, his name is firmly in the mix alongside senior stars, with the likes of team-mate Raphinha and PSG's Ousmane Dembele.

Newcastle in huge race to sign in-demand £10,000-a-week Liverpool talent

da dobrowin: Newcastle United are “interested” in completing the signing of an “outstanding” Premier League player this summer, according to a fresh transfer claim.

Newcastle eye new forwards and goalkeeper this summer

da mrbet: The Magpies know that victory at home to Everton on Sunday will seal a place in the Champions League next season, following an impressive campaign in the Premier League, not to mention a year that has seen them win the EFL Cup and end their long trophy drought.

Brighton forward Joao Pedro has been linked with a move to St James’ Park this summer, with Alan Shearer a big admirer of him, saying after a Seagulls win this season: “He was superb today and they just edged it in those forward positions. They are really strong with him, Rutter, Mitoma and Welbeck. Their understanding and they linked really well today in Rutter and Joao Pedro.”

Doubts continue to persist over the future of Alexander Isak at Newcastle, and if he does leave in the summer, a top-quality replacement will be needed. Alexander Sorloth has been mentioned as an option, following a strong season that has seen him score 17 goals for Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

Borussia Dortmund youngster Jamie Gittens has been backed to join the Magpies, too, with the 20-year-old Englishman a player who could have a big future in the game. At the other end of the pitch, a fresh Newcastle transfer rumour has now emerged.

Newcastle interested in signing Liverpool goalkeeper

According to a report from Spain, Newcastle are “interested” in signing Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher in the summer window, with the Irishman expected to leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Aston Villa, Chelsea and Bournemouth are all mentioned as alternative options, ahead of a potential huge auction for the 26-year-old’s signature before next season gets underway.

Liverpool's CaoimhinKelleher

It does look like Newcastle see signing a long-term successor for Nick Pope as a priority this summer, if not bringing in an immediate replacement for the Englishman. In Kelleher, the Magpies would be signing a top-quality goalkeeper – one who has proven himself as a fantastic understudy to Alisson so many times in the past, being lauded by Steve McManaman.

In fact, Kelleher took centre stage at St James’ Park for all the wrong reasons earlier this season, making a mistake that allowed Fabian Schar to secure a late 3-3 draw for Newcastle, but that shouldn’t do anything to alter the Magpies’ opinion of him.

The £10,000-a-week Republic of Ireland international is too good to be sitting on the substitutes’ bench at Liverpool most weeks, and he should be considered a leading option for Eddie Howe this summer.

Chelsea will now sell player who Maresca is "crazy" about for just £30m

Chelsea chiefs have decided that they will sell a player who manager Enzo Maresca loves for just £30 million this summer, with the Blues expected to orchestrate a major clearout ahead of next season.

Players likely to leave Chelsea this summer

Kepa Arrizabalaga, Alfie Gilchrist, Armando Broja, Raheem Sterling, João Félix, David Datro Fofana, Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell and Axel Disasi are just some of the names facing uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge.

All the aforementioned men were allowed to depart west London on loan deals this season, and it is unlikely any of them have a long-term future under Maresca, as BlueCo also look to trim Chelsea’s wage bill and balance the books.

Trevoh Chalobah is also expected to leave Chelsea after being initially allowed to join Crystal Palace on a temporary deal for the first half of 2024/2025, before Maresca’s side triggered the re-call clause in his contract to instigate an early return in January.

Trevoh Chalobah in action for Chelsea

Félix was shipped out on loan to AC Milan in January as well, and while the Portuguese made a promising start to life at the San Siro, his form has since plummeted and Milan have already decided not to try and sign him permanently (Fabrizio Romano).

Interestingly, The Telegraph even shared news this week that Al-Nassr have developed a strong interest in Moises Caicedo, but Maresca’s key star will command a price tag north of £100 million, and it is unlikely Chelsea would even entertain selling.

However, the same cannot be said of versatile defender Renato Veiga.

Chelsea ready to sell Renato Veiga for £30m

Veiga was very keen to leave Chelsea in January, as he held a burning desire to play at centre-back when Maresca was utilising him far more in the left-back area.

Juventus eventually granted the 21-year-old his wish, signing him on loan for the rest of this campaign. Maresca is still said to be “crazy” about Veiga as a player, according to reports in Italy, but that hasn’t stopped Chelsea from making him available for a reasonable fee.

Renato Veiga for Chelsea.

As per The Mail and journalist Simon Jones, Chelsea will allow Veiga to leave for just £30 million this summer, with the defender set to be joined by Disasi, Chilwell and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as players almost certain to be up for grabs.

The Portuguese cost Chelsea just £12 million to sign from FC Basel last summer, so Todd Boehly and co will still be in line for a major profit if they find a buyer for over double his original price.

Since joining Juve, Veiga has started seven out of the Old Lady’s last 10 Serie A games as a centre-half, missing two matches due to injury and spending one on the bench.

Approach made: Nottingham Forest enquire to sign "underrated" £20m forward

Nottingham Forest are now making enquiries over a summer deal for an “underrated” forward, who is expected to have an asking price of around £20m, according to a report.

Nottingham Forest gearing up for European adventure

Having managed to qualify for a European competition for the first time since 1996, Forest may need to improve their squad depth in the upcoming transfer window, and they have now started to identify potential targets in a range of different positions.

Despite missing out on Champions League due to the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea on the final day, the Tricky Trees may still be in a strong position to attract quality players from some top clubs, courtesy of securing qualification for the Europa Conference League.

With Morgan Gibbs-White being heavily linked with a move away from the City Ground, however, it may be particularly important to bring in new attacking options, who are capable of providing goals and assists on a regular basis.

According to a report from GiveMeSport, Nottingham Forest have a new target in mind who could fit the bill in that regard, having now started to make enquiries about a potential summer deal for SC Freiburg forward Ritsu Doan.

Forest are now stepping up their pursuit of Doan, but there could be competition for his signature from Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt, with the Bundesliga sides known to be admirers.

Frankfurt are currently preparing an offer for the Freiburg star, so the Tricky Trees may have to move quickly if they are to secure his signature, with an offer in the region of £20m likely to be deemed acceptable by the forward’s current employers.

"Underrated" Doan impressing in the Bundesliga

The Japanese winger enjoyed an impressive 2024-25 campaign in Germany, picking up a combined 19 goals and assists in 36 matches in all competitions, during which time he also received praise from football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Not only that, but the 26-year-old is also willing and able to pitch in defensively, ranking in the 92nd percentile for tackles per 90, and the 95th percentile for clearances over the past year, when compared to other wingers and attacking midfielders.

As such, Doan could be a bargain signing for Nottingham Forest at just £20m this summer, at which point Nuno Espirito Santo may have to bring in at least one new winger, amid recent reports that Manchester United are now considering a move for Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Smith: Would be cool to be part of LA 2028 Olympics

Says he sees himself playing the T20 format longer than the other two

Andrew McGlashan20-Aug-2024Steven Smith has not ruled out the possibility of pushing to represent Australia at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles with T20 likely to be a format he keeps playing longer than others although he has no retirement plans in his mind.Smith has signed a new three-year deal with Sydney Sixers in the BBL, which means he will be playing professional cricket until at least 2026-27. But he would need to force his way back into Australia’s T20 set-up were he to be realistic about the Olympics the following year having been omitted for this year’s T20 World Cup.”I could still be playing T20 cricket in four years, so you never know,” he said. “It’s a format I can see myself playing probably for a lot longer than some of the others, especially with the franchise stuff around the world. I’ve signed on here for three years so it’s only another year after that. It would be cool to be part of an Olympics.”Related

But as far as the various international formats go, it remains the status quo for Smith. “I don’t have any plans,” he said. “I’m just enjoying playing at the moment, I’m pretty relaxed and looking forward to this summer.”Of more immediate significance for Smith is the upcoming international schedule. He will return to action in the ODIs in England next month (having again been left out for the T20Is) before the main event of India’s visit. Amid the conjecture around whether he will remain Australia’s Test opener, Smith is relishing the prospect of facing India over a five-match series.1:42

Smith happy to open or bat at No. 4 against India

It will be the first time the two teams have taken on each other across five Tests since 1991-92 although there has been no shortage of drama in the four-match contests in recent times. Australia are aiming to regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time in ten years, having not beaten India since the 2014-15 series on home soil.”You can’t really hide in a five-Test series like you probably can in a two-match series for instance,” Smith said. “If someone gets the wood on you, it can be hard coming back from that. It’s going to be a wonderful series.”We are probably the two best teams at the moment in Test cricket. We played the World Test Championship final last year and beat them there. They’ve been great out here the last couple of times, they’ve played really good cricket, hopefully we can turn the tables. It’s been ten years since we last won the Border-Gavaskar trophy so need to do that this year.”If Australia retain the batting order they have had since David Warner’s retirement in January, Smith will be opening against the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj. Smith, who has a chance to pass 10,000 runs this summer, was elevated up the order when he told the selectors he was keen for the role. It also allowed Cameron Green to return at a more natural No. 4 but results were mixed for Smith across four Tests with 171 runs at 28.50 although that included a superb unbeaten 91 against West Indies. It is likely to be a topic that will dominate the next few months with Smith set to have some Sheffield Shield cricket before the India series.”The conversations I’ve had so far is that we’ll go to England… I’m there for the one-dayers, then make a decision after that,” he said. “There’s conversations happening in the background. You see some comments that guys like Usman [Khawaja] has said he likes me down at No. 4, think Marnus is of a similar thought pattern. We’ll wait and see. I’m happy to bat anywhere.”For me, it’s just a position. Batting at four, I could be in after the first two balls. I’ve been in early on many occasions and faced the new ball. For me, it’s kind of just a number. I batted at three for a long period of time as well and we lost wickets inside the first over and I’ll come out and score runs. The only real thing I had to get used to was how quick a turnaround it is when you come off the field and you only have ten minutes, particularly with the amount of mucking around I have in the changing rooms.”

Gill: 'Captaincy brings out the best in me'

He says he feels amazing leading ‘such phenomenal talented players’

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jul-20241:40

Gill: Coming back from 1-0 down was remarkable

Shubman Gill believes that captaincy brings the “best out of him” because it brings out a side of him where he really enjoys being out on the field.”It is something that I definitely enjoy,” Gill said about captaincy after leading India to a 4-1 T20I series win over Zimbabwe in Harare. “I think it brings out the best in me when I am out there because I look to be involved in the game. It is something that really brings out the side of me which I enjoy being on the field.”With most of the senior players rested, Gill was asked to lead the Indian side for the first time in his career. His stint started on a tough note with India going down in the opening game of the series, but he quickly found his stride as the visitors posted comfortable wins in the next four games.Related

Gill admitted there was pressure but the satisfaction of overcoming that and helping India finish on the right side of the results was “immense”.”There was pressure, I wouldn’t say extra pressure but obviously even when you are playing just as a batsman when you don’t perform there is a certain kind of pressure that comes along with it,” he said. “But I think that’s the fun part of it. You kind of feel so many different emotions. Pressure is one of them. And when you get out of that, the satisfaction that you feel is immense.”India had gone with a relatively inexperienced squad to Zimbabwe with a lot of the players still very new to international cricket. Gill himself was just 14 T20Is old coming into the series but said the chance to lead a young side with “such phenomenal talented players” was amazing.”To be able to lead such phenomenal talented players who I have had the pleasure to play with or against at some stage in age-group cricket or Under-19 or at the India level, it just feels very amazing.”When you have played against or with so many of the players… I think almost with everyone I have played against or with at some age-group level, it definitely makes my job easier because I understand them at a player level and I understand them as a person as well.”So many talented players, so many players coming up and it is really fun to be able to play alongside them when I am at the non-striker’s end,” Gill said. But what went wrong in the first T20I where India chasing 116 were bundled out for 102 in 19.5 overs? Gill said that India “failed to assess the conditions” properly in that game.”I think that is the mistake we did in the first T20, the score wasn’t that big but I think we didn’t assess the conditions as early and we lost too many wickets in the powerplay and then once you are under pressure, then you are always behind in the game,” he said.Gill did not single out one particular captain that he idolises in international cricket but said that Rohit Sharma was someone he really looked up to.”You can take qualities from Rohit or even Mahi (MS Dhoni) , Virat (Kohli) , Hardik (Pandya) , all of them,” he said. “All of them have great qualities. I have played the most under Rohit , so he is someone who I look up to and really enjoy playing under.”

'You are the century maker, not me' – Gavaskar remembers Chetan Chauhan's words

Sunil Gavaskar recounts hugs, tax exemptions and is pretty sure he cost Chauhan two centuries

Sunil Gavaskar16-Aug-20201:18

Chetan Chauhan: Gavaskar’s longtime opening partner

” [come here and give me a hug], after all we are in the mandatory overs of life,” was the usual greeting of my opening partner Chetan Chauhan whenever we met over the last two or three years. The meetings were invariably at his beloved Feroze Shah Kotla ground, where he was in charge of the pitch preparation. As we hugged, I would say to him, “No, no. We must have another century partnership,” and he would laugh and say, “Arre baba, you are the century maker, not me.” Never in my wildest nightmares could I believe that his words about being in the mandatory overs of life would come true so soon. It’s so hard to believe that his laughter and cheerful banter won’t be there the next time I go to Delhi.Talking of centuries, I firmly believe that I was responsible for him missing out on two occasions, both in Australia in the 1980-81 series down under. In the second Test in Adelaide he was on 97 when my teammates pulled me out of my chair in front of the TV and dragged me to the players balcony, saying I must get there to cheer my partner. I was a bit superstitious about watching from the players enclosure as then the batsman would get out. So I would always watch on the dressing room TV. Once the landmark was reached, then I would rush to the players balcony and join in the cheers.A magazine page about the tenth century stand for the first wicket between Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan, achieved against New Zealand in Christchurch during the 1980-81 series•Clayton Murzello Magazine CollectionHowever, here I was in the Adelaide balcony when Dennis Lille came in to bowl and – would you believe – Chetan was caught behind first ball. I was livid and told the players off for having got me to the balcony but that wasn’t going to change what had happened. A few years later, I didn’t make the same mistake when Mohammad Azharuddin was approaching his third consecutive hundred in Kanpur, and as soon as he got to the coveted mark, I was out of the change room and applauding him from next to the sightscreen. Some of my friends in the media, who had the knives out for me then, made a big story of my so-called absence. Amazingly, they had had nothing to say about the absence of some when a year earlier I got my 29th century to be level with Sir Don Bradman in Delhi. The second occasion that I believe I was responsible for Chetan missing a hundred, was when I lost my head after being abused by the Australians as I was leaving the pitch after a terrible decision. Trying to drag Chetan off the field with me must have disrupted his concentration and he was again out short of a century a little later. There’s one thing that few players of my generation and the one immediately after don’t know – his contribution in getting tax exemptions for them. Both of us first met up with the late Shri R Venkataraman, who was the Finance minister of the country then, and requested him to consider a tax exemption for fees received for playing for India. I must add that it wasn’t just for cricket but for all sportspersons who played for India. We explained how, when we were junior cricketers, we had to spend a lot of money on equipment, travel, coaches, etc. when we had no income at all.

“Chetan always said that if we are asked what was our best contribution to Indian cricket, we should say that it was getting [tax] exemptions for the cricketing fraternity”

Shri Venkatramanji was most considerate and in a notification, he passed a ruling that gave us 75% standard deduction for a Test match fee, then an exemption on 50% of the tour fees which we received before leaving for a tour. The cherry on the cake though was the total exemption on the one-day match fees of INR 750 which we received those days. Mind you, we barely played a game or two of one-day internationals then. That notification was in place till about 1998, by which time the number of one-day internationals had increased dramatically as also as the fees which were around INR 1 lakh or so. So around the mid-90s, players were getting about INR 25 lakhs or more free of tax. Even after my retirement, I would give a copy of the notification to the newcomers in the Indian team for them to give to their accountants.Chetan always said that if we are asked what was our best contribution to Indian cricket, we should say that it was getting the exemptions for the cricketing fraternity. His desire to help others manifested in him joining politics, and right till the end he was a giver, not a taker. He had a wicked sense of humour too. His favourite song as we walked out to face some of the most hostile bowlers in the game was [smile little boy, smile]. That was his way of easing the nerves while confronting challenges. Now that my partner is no more how can I ? May your soul have everlasting peace, partner.

Rain wrecks third T20I between England and Pakistan

Teams left short on match practice ahead of World Cup after second washout of series

Matt Roller28-May-2024England and Pakistan will head to the T20 World Cup short on match practice after persistent rain wiped out Tuesday night’s match between them in Cardiff without a ball being bowled. It is the second abandonment of the series after the weather ruined Wednesday’s series opener in Leeds, with only 39.2 of the 120 scheduled overs bowled so far.Jos Buttler, England’s captain, did not travel to Cardiff and Moeen Ali would have led their side in his place if the game had taken place. Buttler left the squad on Saturday night following England’s 23-run win in Birmingham and travelled to London to be with his wife Louise, with the couple expecting their third child imminently.Mark Wood was due to play his first match since early March for England, while Sam Curran would also have featured after being left out on Saturday at Edgbaston. ESPNcricinfo understands that Jofra Archer would have been rested, with England taking a cautious approach to his workload after such a long injury lay-off.Buttler is expected to travel to Barbados with the rest of the England squad on Friday, and could even return to the squad in time to play in the final match of the series at The Oval on Thursday night. As things stand, the weather forecast for south London is not hugely promising as both sides hope for a final run-out before they travel, though should at least allow for a shortened match. With neither side due to play an official warm-up match between Thursday and their respective opening group-stage fixtures, they will be relatively undercooked compared to some teams at the World Cup. Pakistan have at least played regularly in this format recently, drawing 2-2 with New Zealand in April and beating Ireland 2-1 earlier this month; Saturday’s match was England’s only T20I since December 21.There was heavy rain early on Tuesday morning in Cardiff, which continued for much of the day. It briefly stopped during the afternoon but returned at around 5.15pm, repeatedly delaying the toss until umpires Mike Burns and Russell Warren abandoned the match at 8.12pm, much to the disappointment of a sold-out crowd.
