Man Utd hold talks over signing £50m star who’s ‘similar to Kane’

Manchester United's January transfer window has been quiet so far, but they could be in for a busy last stint with Erik ten Hag demanding reinforcement.

The Red Devils certainly need inspiration, with the side sitting eighth in the Premier League having scored fewer goals than all but three sides in the division.

A new signing could provide that, with a striker the main target for the Dutch boss, who wants to improve his side's output in the final third.

A striker is Ten Hag's priority

According to transfer insider Ben Jacobs via GIVEMESPORT, United are interested in signing Joshua Zirkzee. Below is what the journalist had to say:

"It's not easy for Manchester United to find a striker in this window, but Zirkzee is a genuine target and there has already been some early contact between the clubs."

As mentioned, a deal this month is unlikely, with the Red Devils financial fair play guidelines and Zirkzee's reported £50m price tag hindering the process.

Ten Hag's biggest problem since the summer has been finding a way to get his attackers firing, with United scoring 1.14 goals per game, which is down from 1.53 last season.

The focus has been on Rasmus Hojlund, who has netted just twice in 16 Premier League games, but Bruno Fernandes (3), Marcus Rashford (4), and Antony (0) have all underperformed in attack as well.

The player who could help ease their attacking woes is Zirkzee, who has been described as a "special" player by Italian journalist Pietro Blazano Prota. The 22-year-old number nine has scored seven goals and created two assists, which is the best goal-contribution record for the Bologna team by three.

Unsurprisingly, football writer Ben Mattinson has compared Zirkzee to former Man United target and Premier League legend Harry Kane, stating that the two are "so similar."

That certainly bodes well for any prospective transfer, and with that in mind, the table below showcases a handful of statistics from their respective leagues that compare the duo.

Although Kane obviously wipes the floor with Zirkzee pretty much across the board, notably for chance conversion and scoring goals, there are still certain similarities between the two. Firstly, they are both strikers who love to get involved in the play and use their intelligence to affect the game from a deeper position, as you can see by the touches, progressive passes, and key passes.

They're both also excellent finishers who outperform their xG, and although it cannot be displayed via statistics, Zirkzee and Kane are extremely composed and will often find space in the box, regardless of how little room there is. The ability to shift the ball quickly to either foot inside the penalty area is what makes them both so dangerous.

The signing of Zirkzee would make United far less predictable in the final third, and he could become a much cheaper alternative to Kane for Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Man Utd eyeing "the best target man in the world" to rival Hojlund

Manchester United's lack of goal-scoring prowess has been a hot topic of conversation this season.

The Red Devils have only netted 24 goals in 21 matches this campaign, which has played a huge role in their current eighth position in the Premier League.

With that in mind, Erik ten Hag will look to reinforce the striker position this January by aiming to secure a short-term fix.

Man Utd's search for a new striker

According to Fabrizio Romano, Man United are interested in signing Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting this month.

Talks have taken place between the club and his agents, as a move could be completed this month.

Man Utd transfer target Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in action for Bayern Munich.

The reporter took to social media to say: "Man Utd have discussed signing Eric Choupo-Moting, but no club-to-club negotiations with Bayern yet."

Why Choupo-Moting would be a good signing for Man Utd

It is well-known that United's star signing of the summer, Rasmus Hojlund, has struggled to adapt to his new surroundings and with the step up from the Serie A to the Premier League.

The 20-year-old has scored two goals all season in the league, which have both come in his last two matches. Yet, he has been firing in the Champions League with five goals, which proves he's an exceptional talent.

Rasmus Hojlund

However, the pressure of having to perform can become overwhelming, and his winner versus Aston Villa on Boxing Day was celebrated with more relief than enjoyment. That said, Ten Hag could look to bring in an experienced striker on a short-term deal who can take some pressure off Hojlund's shoulders.

Choupo-Moting could be that individual who is currently playing second fiddle to Harry Kane at Bayern. The 34-year-old has only started three Bundesliga games all season, playing an average of 23 minutes per game.

Nevertheless, the table below proves that the ex-Stoke City player would be a good signing for Man United, based on his stats from the last year across Europe's top leagues.

As you can see by his non-penalty goals, shots, touches in the attacking penalty box, and progressive passes received, Choupo-Moting is the definition of a true number nine who would provide a reliable source of goals, unlike Hojlund.

The 6 foot 3 star has even been called "the best target man in the world" by his teammate Serge Gnabry, which potentially foreshadows just how large his impact could be at Old Trafford. That is supplemented by a broad range of statistics, notably the fact that he ranked within the top 17% of forwards at the World Cup in 2022 for aerial duels won.

It's also echoed by his ability to shrug off defenders when running with the ball, tackled by an opponent just 28% of the time when attempting a take-on. That puts the Cameroon international impressively within the best 2% of forwards in Europe over the last year.

The 34-year-old evidently has a completely different style of play from Hojlund, however, and he could well elevate the game of those around him with his technical ability and capability to drop deeper to get on the ball.

This would provide Ten Hag with an opportunity to have different attacking patterns, depending on the opponent and who leads the line. The fact that he ranks in the top 9% for passes completed proves that, whereas the Dane ranks in the bottom 23% in the Premier League, as per FBref.

Overall, the signing of Choupo-Moting could be an extremely smart move, and one that in the interim could well have Hojlund running scared.

Xabi Alonso highlights Kylian Mbappe weight gain as Real Madrid boss 'still looking at what to fix' after France star's two goal display against Oviedo

Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso is happy with Kylian Mbappe's impact since he regained the weight he lost due to illness at the Club World Cup.

Mbappe scored two goals in win over OviedoCoach says Mbappe has gained four kilosClaims the overall feeling is goodFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Mbappe led Madrid to a comfortable win as he scored two goals in the 3-0 win against Real Oviedo on Sunday. The striker has looked agile and sharp in his last two fixtures, but coach Alonso claims the French forward has gained a few kilos that he previously lost during the Club World Cup when he was hospitalised with gastroenteritis.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Alonso previously praised Mbappe as he highlighted noticeable positive changes in his mindset and ambition. He further claimed that the reason he is backing the player's form is because of a combination of two things: first, he has already spent a season at Madrid and now wants more, and second, maybe because of donning the iconic No. 10. Mbappe's two-goal contribution further cements his form and provides Alonso a much-needed confidence boost.

WHAT ALONSO SAID

Asked about what has changed about Mbappe, the Spanish manager told reporters: "He's gained four kilos back. He had lost four at the World Championships. He looks good; I love watching him do those laps. When we manage to maintain those distances, everyone closer to each other, we find each other. He did very well today, and the other day too. We're still looking at what to correct, but the feeling is good."

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR MADRID?

The ex-Bayer Leverkusen coach was clear about making changes in the future. He stressed that every player will get the opportunity to play. The substitutions depend "game to game", and his intention is for "everyone to contribute." Madrid will face Mallorca next in the league on August 31 before the international break kicks in.

Leeds suffer ‘huge’ injury blow

Stuart Dallas’ injury is a massive setback for Jesse Marsch and Leeds United, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

The 31-year-old was forced off deep into first-half stoppage time against Manchester City at the end of last month after challenging Jack Grealish for the ball.

It has since emerged that he has suffered a fractured femur, and The Athletic’s Phil Hay has said that the Northern Ireland international will be fortunate to return before Christmas.

Leeds are fighting for their Premier League status as they enter their final three games of the season. Their 2-1 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday saw them slip into the bottom three, level with Burnley on points but with a far inferior goal difference.

It was a sign of the ill fortune that the Whites are currently enduring that the first goal for the Gunners came about from a shocking error by Illan Meslier.

The latest

O’Rourke has said that Dallas’ injury is a ‘huge’ problem for Leeds at a critical time and thinks that the player’s versatility will be one of the things that Marsch misses most.

The journalist told GiveMeSport: “It’s a huge blow for Leeds to lose someone like Stuart Dallas, especially at such a crucial stage of the season, you want all of your best players fit.

“We know how important Stuart Dallas is to Leeds, he can play in so many positions, which he has done in the past. He’s played in midfield and defence and would probably play up front if he was asked to by Leeds.”

The verdict

Dallas is the ultimate utility man. This season, he has operated in both full-back positions, defensive midfield, central midfield and on the left wing.

The £53,000-per-week stalwart had started all 34 of Leeds’ Premier League matches before suffering the nasty injury, along with all but one league game in the preceding two campaigns, so his importance to the team is clear.

More generally, the Whites’ injury woes this season have been extensive. As of 5 April, they were second in the division for total injuries and first for total days missed (via Ben Dinnery), with the likes of Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper all enduring lengthy absences.

Perhaps if they had better luck, they simply wouldn’t be in this position. Alas, they can’t afford to wallow in self-pity, with their Premier League status very much on the line over the next fortnight.

'Freedom!' – Ousmane Dembele explains why he has hit form with PSG in thinly-veiled dig at Barcelona

Dembele joined PSG in 2023Enjoys more freedom than at BarcelonaForm resulted in France call-upWHAT HAPPENED?

Dembele joined PSG a year ago for half the price Barcelona paid for him in 2017. The French champions forked out just north of €50m (£42m/$53m) for the pacey winger who tallied 20 goal contributions in all competitions in 2023-24. He recently gave an interview suggesting that he works better under head coach Luis Enrique because he is given the freedom to roam on the pitch.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Dembele's value may have decreased in recent years, but he has continued to show glimpses of his world-class talent. The 44-cap France international has suffered from several long-term injuries but when fit, he is one of the most formidable wingers in Europe. With Kylian Mbappe leaving his hometown club this summer, Dembele may need to be the man to step up in his absence.

WHAT DEMBELE SAID

In an interview with Marca, Dembele said: "Luis Enrique gives me a lot of freedom. At Barcelona I was more attached to the wing. At PSG, I can play everywhere, as a No.10, on the wing, as a false 9. I had more freedom in the second half of the season. The coach told me to keep moving, except when I had to maintain my position on the wing."

DID YOU KNOW?

The 27-year-old arrived at Barcelona a few months after his current manager Enrique left the Camp Nou. Dembele was unveiled after signing a deal worth over €100m (£84m/$107m) but only scored three times in 17 La Liga appearances in his first season.

Ben Cox, Ross Whiteley see Worcestershire to victory after the rain

Alex Lees made his first List A fifty for Durham but they could not hold off Worcs’ charge after a four-hour delay

ECB Reporters Network24-Apr-2019Durham suffered their first defeat of the campaign in the Royal London Cup as Ross Whiteley and Ben Cox guided Worcestershire Rapids to a four-wicket success under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method at Blackfinch New Road. The visitors had won their opening games but Cox and Whiteley tipped a see-saw contest in favour of the Rapids with a half-century stand for the sixth wicket before victory was completed with 10 balls to spare. Cox, so often the cool head in a crisis, ended unbeaten on 31 from 26 balls.Victory enabled Worcestershire to bounce back from the weekend defeat to Leicestershire and move level on points with Durham.Durham were restricted to 114 for 4 in 27.2 overs before the heavens opened after being put into bat, despite Alex Lees scoring his first List A half-century for the county. Worcestershire were eventually set a revised target of 152 in 24 overs after a delay of more than four hours.Hamish Rutherford and Riki Wessels quickly established a position of command for the home side as the half-century came up in only 4.5 overs.Rutherford had become the second Worcestershire player to score centuries on his County Championship and List A debut and he continued in the same vein. He deposited Matt Salisbury and Matt Potts for six on his way to 33 from 22 balls before nicking a widish delivery from Ben Raine through to keeper Cameron Bancroft.Wessels was also full of attacking intent in making 29 until he was caught off a skier by Bancroft running back towards the boundary from a Salisbury delivery.Daryl Mitchell dragged a slower delivery from Brydon Carse on to his stumps for a second successive duck in the competition at 71 for 3 in the 10th over.Carse struck again in his next over as Tom Fell went for a pull and top-edged a simple catch to Graham Clark at mid-on. When captain Brett D’Oliveira was caught behind off Salisbury, Worcestershire had lost four wickets for 10 runs in the space of five overs. But Whiteley and Cox turned the game back in the Rapids favour by adding 51 in seven overs before the former provided Bancroft with another catch, this time off Raine. Cox and Ed Barnard saw Worcestershire over the finishing line.Durham had been put into bat and new-ball bowler Charlie Morris made the first breakthrough in his third over as Scott Steel went for a drive and was bowled by a delivery which came back sharply.Lees, who moved to Durham from Yorkshire after an initial loan spell last summer, had been dismissed for 4 and 6 in Durham’s opening two Royal London Cup games He looked in good form and cover-drove Morris for successive boundaries. But Clark paid the penalty for a poor shot as he pulled a short delivery from Josh Tongue straight to Whiteley at deep square leg.Durham skipper Bancroft went into the game on the back of unbeaten centuries in the competition – 151 versus Northamptonshire and 118 against Leicestershire. He moved confidently to 20 but the introduction of Mitchell into the attack led to his downfall. The Australia batsman drove loosely and Morris held on to the chance at short third man with the total 78 for 3.Lees completed his half century off 75 deliveries with four boundaries. But Gareth Harte, making his first RLC appearance of the campaign, fell shortly before an elongated break. He took a stride out of his crease before driving at D’Oliveira and was stumped by Cox.Only two more runs were added before the players were forced off by driving rain.

Dane Piedt's 13-wicket haul solidifies Cape Cobras' title hopes

Wiaan Mulder, meanwhile, struck a career-best 146 to keep Lions in close pursuit of the table-toppers

Liam Brickhill24-Jan-2019

Results summary

A career-best match haul of 13 for 141 from Cape Cobras captain Dane Piedt helped his team maintain a slim lead at the top of the points table after the penultimate round of the 4-Day Franchise Series in South Africa.Piedt was in the wickets with his offspin from the first innings of the match in Oudtshoorn, skittling the middle and lower order to pick up 6 for 75 as Titans reached 275 after choosing to bat. A 135-run opening stand between Simon Khomari and Pieter Malan helped the Cobras secure a 100-run first-innings lead, and Piedt pressed home the advantage in Titans’ second innings.Opening the bowling on a pitch offering generous help for the spinners, he collected 7 for 66 in 28.1 overs, while George Linde bowled 30 overs of left-arm spin and Andrea Agathangelou’s 84 provided the only resistance as Titans were bowled out for 151. That left Cobras needing 52, Zubayr Hamza’s unbeaten 26 seeing them to an eight-wicket win with a day to spare. That result opened up a significant lead of more than 25 points at the top for Cobras, but Lions narrowed it to just over three points with their sixth win of the competition. Lions’ eventual five-wicket win over Knights at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein was built on sterling performances with both bat and ball: Wiaan Mulder, Kagiso Rapulana and Nono Pongolo all achieved career-best performances with the bat, while left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin collected his best ever first-class figures.Fortuin’s 7 for 70 meant meant Knights could only reach 357 despite a strong start from their top order. Rapulana and Mulder’s centuries – their highest scores in franchise cricket – and Pongolo’s maiden franchise fifty opened up a 133-run lead, and Pongolo’s 4 for 49 in the second innings tipped the balance further. Lions made heavy weather of a second-innings target of 76, losing five wickets, but Dominic Hendricks’ 49 not out saw them home, and closed the gap on Cobras.Zubayr Hamza keeps his eyes on the ball•BCCI

Meanwhile, bad weather seems to be following Dolphins around. Last week, rain washed out much of their match against Knights in Pietermaritzburg, and inclement weather also forced a draw in their game against Warriors in East London. After captain Jon-Jon Smuts won the toss and opted to bat first, Warriors made a strong start thanks to centuries from Edward Moore and Yaseen Vallie, declaring their first innings at 436 for 7. Having conceded a first-innings lead of 118, Dolphins clawed back thanks to seamer Eathan Bosch, whose 4 for 36 reduced Warriors to 163 for 9 in their second innings. That was the score on which they declared for the second time in the game after play on the final day only got underway after the lunch break with bad light playing havoc with the day’s action. Set 275 to win, Dolphins were kept ticking by Marques Ackerman’s rapid 77 and had reached 171 for 5 in 30 overs, with a possible 22 overs left in the day, before the weather closed in once again to force a draw.

On the national radar

As South Africa continue to consider their all-round options in both the Test and limited-overs sides, Wiaan Mulder’s career-best 146 and cheap second-innings wickets will not go amiss. Temba Bavuma’s impact with the bat in the same match was modest – he managed 30 in the first innings and 6 in the second – while Zubayr Hamza returned to franchise cricket after his Test debut against Pakistan with scores of 28 and 26 not out in Cobras’ win.

Top performer

Dane Piedt now sits comfortably at the top of the competition bowling tables after his 13-wicket match haul took him to 52 in nine games this season.Piedt has led Cobras with aplomb this season, as well as recording both his best figures in an innings and his best-ever match haul. He also struck his maiden first-class century against Knights in Bloemfontein to kick off the new year, and if Cobras can maintain their slim lead over Lions, he will have some silverware to cap what has been a brilliant season.

PSL franchises asked to clear their dues by December 3

Setting aside the ongoing negotiations, the PCB CFO asked the teams to fulfil their outstanding financial obligations, failing which they stand to lose their bank guarantees

PSL franchises have been asked by the PCB to clear all outstanding dues by next week, despite ongoing negotiations between them to re-look at the financial model underpinning the league. The PCB’s chief finance officer Badar Manzoor Khan has asked in an email seen by ESPNcricinfo that all the teams pay up by December 3, failing which the board reserves the right to encash the franchises’ bank guarantees. The move has angered franchises who, in their recent meeting with the PCB in Islamabad, had formed a three-member committee to revisit the revenue-share model on which the PSL was founded, including an effort to gain tax breaks from the government. The email asking for payment has come even as the committee works towards a resolution. One of the primary bones of contention is the franchise fee they pay every year, mainly because those payments are required to be made in US dollars. The value of the rupee, fairly stable against the dollar over the first three years of the PSL at around PKR 105 per dollar, has gone to PKR 134 now.Though all the teams signed a ten-year contract in November 2015, according to which they were liable to pay in US dollars, the franchises want to peg the rate to 2015 standards or pay in Pakistani rupees at the same rate when the contracts were signed. None of the franchises have broken even so far, crippled they feel, by the exchange rate as well as the taxes they are having to pay.The first set of commercial and sponsorship rights deals the PSL signed when it launched have now ended, and with enhanced deals now being inked in, as well as the scare caused by Multan Sultans’ financial meltdown, the remaining five have sensed this is the time to push for a greater slice of the revenue pool. The current financial model adopted by the PCB in 2016 offers equal shares from a central revenue pool to all franchises, despite the difference in franchise fees. After Multan Sultans’ ouster, the PCB is yet to invite a tender to bring in an owner for the sixth side, but various investors in Pakistan including Ali Tareen – the son of Jahangir Khan Tareen, a key figure in the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party – and Aqeel Karim Dhedhi, a prominent businessman, are among those to have shown their interest. The sixth team is presently being regulated by the PCB on its own and with the tender, the board will transfer the ownership to the buyers, allowing them to choose the name of the city.

BCCI stance on India-Pakistan matches is 'hypocrisy' – PCB chairman Ehsan Mani

In an exclusive interview with ESPNcricinfo, the newly elected PCB chairman spoke about the need to revive bilateral cricketing ties between India and Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Oct-20184:32

‘The people want India-Pakistan cricket, and you can’t go against their will’

Ehsan Mani, the newly elected PCB chairman, has termed India’s stance on playing Pakistan “hypocrisy”. In a climate of political tension between the two countries, India have not played a bilateral match against Pakistan in any format since January 2013, but have met them 10 times since then in multilateral events. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Mani said it was the “will of the people” that cricketing ties between India and Pakistan resume, and added that sporting contact would improve relations between the two countries.”The main thing is that we play cricket against each other. When we play cricket, especially in our countries – when we go to India or when they come here – helps in increasing people-to-people contact. Indian fans come to Pakistan. Lakhs of fans have come to Pakistan from India and everyone goes back happy.”There’s no better way to improve the relations between countries than having sporting contacts, cultural contacts. For me, that is far more important than any amount of money that comes into the game.”Indian public obviously love to see India and Pakistan playing, and so does the Pakistan public. Rest of the work is of the politicians and frankly, once India is in the lead-up to its elections next year, so I don’t think there will be any softening in their attitude. But in the long term, the people want it and you can’t go against the will of the people forever.”There is a lot of hypocrisy at the moment. India plays an ICC event against us but doesn’t play a bilateral series. That is something that we need to address.”India-Pakistan matches, Mani said, had the “highest value financially in the world”, but he maintained that the PCB’s desire for the resumption of ties was about more than money. When asked if Pakistan cricket could survive without bilaterals against India, he had a one-word answer: “forever.””Money isn’t the issue, it’s more about the game,” he said. “There are more viewers for an India-Pakistan match than any other match in the world. So, if the Indian government decides to deprive its own citizens of watching an India-Pakistan match then that is their choice.”Mani’s predecessor as PCB chairman, Najam Sethi, was instrumental in moving the ICC to set up a dispute panel to resolve the impasse over India-Pakistan bilateral cricket. The PCB and the BCCI are currently awaiting the panel’s verdict.Asked if he would have chosen the dispute-panel route, Mani said he would have preferred dialogue with the BCCI and the Indian government, and recalled his role, during his tenure as ICC president, in convincing the Indian government to green-light the first full India tour of Pakistan in 15 years.”I would have preferred for there to be board-to-board discussions and board-to-government decisions,” Mani said. “I was ICC [president] in 2003 and India and Pakistan were not playing each other then.”I went and met the Indian government and I took with me the people that were leading the Indian cricket board at that time – Mr. [Jagmohan] Dalmiya, Mr. [IS] Bindra, Mr. Rajsingh [Dungarpur] – and we went to the different ministries concerned with India-Pakistan cricket relations, and they spoke more in favour of resuming cricket between India and Pakistan than I did as a Pakistani.”I had to be slightly neutral since I was with the ICC. But I didn’t have to say anything – they were the ones saying we want to play against Pakistan. There is always some political interference in India but the Indian government has said, ‘Look, at the end of the day, it is the BCCI’s decision to play or not play against Pakistan, but they have to come and present a case to us,’ and I took them on face value.”It took us about a year but they came in 2004 because I kept going back with people on the Indian cricket board and I was going as the ICC President and not as someone representing Pakistan.”For all that, Mani said he wouldn’t keep trying to persuade India to play Pakistan beyond a point.”I don’t intend to ask India to play us at all,” he said. “If they want to play they tell us, if they don’t want to play that’s fine. But we are not going to go after them, we are not going to beg them. It’s good for the game if India-Pakistan play each other but it will be on equal terms.”

Walker Buehler Has NSFW Response to Clip of Francisco Lindor Telling Ump to Eject Him

Walker Buehler was ejected from the Red Sox-Mets on Tuesday in rather epic fashion. Buehler disagreed with a call by home plate umpire Mike Estabrook and things escalated quickly from there.

One thing that might have been glossed over in the heat of the moment was Francisco Lindor's role in the incident. Lindor had been the previous batter and Buehler hit him in the toe. Then Lindor stole second base which caused catcher Carlos Narvaez to obstruct Estabrook's view of the pitch that caused Buehler to complain about.

As Buehler argued with Estabrook, Lindor was standing on second encouraging the ump to toss the pitcher. A fan posted video of Lindor getting hit and accused him of "leaning into a pitch" despite the fact that the ball hit him in his back foot which did not move.

Buehler quote-tweeted that post saying, the Red Sox bullpen is "full of f—— animals."

It's an interesting choice to deliver that message using a fan's post that says, "Big loser energy. Warrants a fastball to the back tomorrow if I’m the Red Sox."

However, Buehler does seem to have a point about the Boston bullpen. With the starter ejected in the middle of the inning five guys combined to give up just four hits and zero runs in 6 2/3 innings.

Boston and New York finish their series tonight at Fenway.
