Brisbane Heat add England prospect Tom Banton to power-packed top order

Brisbane Heat have continued their recruiting bonanza for this summer’s BBL signing England young gun Tom Banton. The explosive right-hander, who has been recently called up to England’s T20I squad for the tour of New Zealand, becomes the fourth overseas signing for the Heat behind AB de Villiers and Afghanistan spin duo Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Zahir Khan.Under BBL rules only two overseas players can play in any team at one time but additional replacements are allowed to be named.Brisbane Heat will split their four overseas players across two halves of the tournament. With de Villiers set to stay in South Africa for Christmas, Banton is likely to play the first eight games before he is likely to be needed for England’s white-ball tour of South Africa in February. Zahir Khan will also play the first half of the tournament with Banton before de Villiers and Mujeeb Ur Rahman replace the pair for the second half.If the Heat make it that far, de Villiers and Mujeeb will also play in the finals.Banton, 20, was the second leading run-scorer in this season’s T20 Blast in England, tallying 549 runs at a staggering strike-rate of 161.47. He made four half-centuries and a blistering 51-ball century against Kent.He has experience playing club cricket in Australia in Perth and has played alongside Heat batsman Matt Renshaw for Somerset.Banton’s recruitment is another coup for Heat general manager Andrew McShea and new coach Darren Lehmann. The latter spent part of the winter in the UK and said Banton’s form was irresistible.”He was the talk of English cricket during their season,” Lehmann said. “Outside the Ashes, Tom was the player that a lot of people were really excited to be watching, and with good reason.”He’s a lovely striker of the ball and has that wide and varied range of shots you need to make the most of the early overs in the Power Play or to accelerate the scoring through the middle and back half of an innings.”The prospect of pairing him alongside some of our young batsmen like Max Bryant, his mate Matt Renshaw, and Sam Heazlett is pretty enticing, that’s for sure. But we know Tom will also benefit from playing and being around the likes of Chris Lynn, Joe Burns, Ben Cutting, and Marnus Labuschagne as he takes steps to expand his skills and experience in Australian conditions.”He’s joining us for the first half of the tournament but we’re hopeful he will have some time to catch-up with AB de Villiers at some point as that would be a great opportunity as part of his experience with the Heat.”Banton was thrilled with the opportunity to play in the BBL.”If you had asked me at the start of the summer would I imagine it going like this, I would have probably had a laugh and suggested you weren’t serious,” Banton said. “I was blown away when it was announced last week that AB was coming to join the Heat so what was already going to be a huge experience just got bigger.”I’m really looking forward to coming to Brisbane and seeing what Queensland has to offer after previously playing club cricket in Perth when I was younger. I’ve watched a fair bit of the BBL at home and it is a quality competition with so many outstanding players. I can’t wait, to be honest.”The news comes just a day after the Melbourne Stars announced they had signed South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn for a six-game stint at the start of the tournament.

Is Misbah-ul-Haq going to be Pakistan's next head coach?

Six months ago, Misbah-ul-Haq was playing for Peshawar Zalmi, his remarkable career that simply refused to end still going strong. In 2018, he had backtracked on his agreement with Islamabad United to be a mentor, instead going on to play for Zalmi as a gold-category player in the fourth edition of the Pakistan Super League. But now, at age 45, a decisive moment lies ahead for Pakistan’s longest serving Test captain: embrace a coaching career or not?Having brought to an end the tenure of Mickey Arthur and his staff earlier this month, Pakistan are seeking applications for the next head coach, with the plan to appoint one by August 26. Misbah was, ESPNcricinfo understands, formally offered the role after Arthur’s departure, even though he hadn’t applied for the job.”I have clarity now that I will be focusing towards helping players,” he said when asked about his coaching ambitions. “In fact, I have been working with players during my days in SNGPL [Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited], Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi, so I know how to go about it. But it’s not final yet that I am going to apply for the job, so everything that has been reported about me is speculative.”In the absence of the coaching staff, he has agreed on a consultancy role as camp commander to overlook Pakistan’s 20-day training ahead of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka later this year. He has also been involved in the selection process of probable players for the camp, and is part of the PCB independent set-up reviewing and finalising the six domestic association teams comprising 32 players each.Misbah’s increasing role in the new PCB set-up augurs well for his chances of getting the top job, but there are questions about the process should he be the next appointee. He was part of the PCB cricket committee that decided that it was time to look beyond Arthur and the rest of the coaching staff, and were he to replace the previous head coach, it could be construed as conflict of interest. Also, in its advertisement for a new head coach, the PCB sought someone who was at least a Level 2 coach, with relevant experience of at least three years with elite cricketers. Misbah is an ECB Level 2 coach and recently underwent a PCB Level 2 course at the National Cricket Academy – the board is understood to prefer a PCB qualification. The three-year experience the PCB appears to require, however, Misbah does not possess yet. But that may not be a big enough hurdle for the former Pakistan captain to cross if he does want to make the jump.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is too good to sit on the England bench – playing the Liverpool right-back in midfield at Euro 2024 is a risk worth taking

The 25-year-old may have little experience of operating centrally, but he has the requisite skills to thrive in the role

What's this? Is Gareth Southgate about to go out swinging? England's famously amiable manager has already shown his ruthless streak ahead of Euro 2024 by ditching popular players such as Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford. Now, it seems he's ready, willing and able to make some bold calls as he looks to belatedly bring an end to his country's agonising 58-year title drought.

Having already taken a huge chance on Luke Shaw's fitness, the latest reports coming out of the England camp suggest that Trent Alexander-Arnold will start Sunday's Group C clash with Serbia in Gelsenkirchen – and not at right-back either, but in midfield.

It's a daring decision, given the enormity of the occasion and the fact that the Liverpool ace has so little experience of playing centrally. However, it's a risk well worth taking, an exciting gamble that could pay off spectacularly for Southgate in Germany.

    Failed first experiment

Southgate has had this idea in his head for an awful long time now. He first experimented with Alexander-Arnold's position in a World Cup qualifier against Andorra all the way back in September 2021.

However, the initial results were hardly encouraging. "It was difficult to get on the ball for me," Alexander-Arnold told . "I found it a lot more difficult to get on the ball in those tight spaces."

He's started just five more games in England's midfield in the interim – and not once against top-class opposition. We're also talking about a player who has played just 112 minutes of tournament football across two games – 79 of which came in the group-stage dead rubber against Belgium at the 2018 World Cup.

In that sense, it seems almost unfair of Southgate to ask Alexander-Arnold on the eve of a major tournament to go and run the game for England at Euro 2024. However, there are several reasons why this could work – and why Southgate needs it to work.

    'So many benefits'

For starters, Alexander-Arnold no longer has any doubts over the change of role. On the contrary, he's welcomed it. He has admitted himself that his performances at right-back for England were, by the lofty standards he had set himself, "mediocre". At international level, he simply wasn't afforded the same "freedom" to get forward and make use of the attacking arsenal at his disposal.

Consequently, he has welcomed the chance to move into midfield. "That's something that really excites me and I feel will get the best out of me in the [England] set-up," he said last October. "This is the most exciting time for me with England."

Jurgen Klopp obviously played a key role in that regard by using Alexander-Arnold as an inverted full-back to great effect at the tail end of the 2022-23 campaign – and at regular intervals last season, allowing the Liverpudlian to grow ever more familiar with playing in midfield.

"There are so many benefits," Klopp said last December on after watching Alexander-Arnold turn in decisive displays against Manchester City and Fulham in the Premier League. "As a team we were not ready in the past and Trent wasn’t ready. We thought last year in a bad moment for us that it was time to change something big and we did [against Arsenal], and it worked out.

"Trent enjoys it. I think he is quite happy with the position and how he can interpret it. I am very happy with him and how it's going."

  • Getty

    'An eight or six eventually'

Of course, Klopp was reluctant to make the move into midfield permanent because he feared that by doing so, Liverpool would be depriving themselves of "the best offensive right-back in the world". For the Reds, it just didn't make sense at the time. They still needed Alexander-Arnold in his original position, at least occasionally.

Unlike Liverpool, though, England have long had a plethora of top-class right-backs to choose from – which is why Southgate first started toying with the idea of playing Alexander-Arnold in midfield.

It's also worth noting that Klopp always said that "Trent will play as an eight or a six eventually. It will happen." And the time is now, as far as Southgate is concerned.

    Best option alongside Rice

There are obviously other strong contenders to start alongside Declan Rice at Euro 2024. Adam Wharton has impressed all and sundry with his composure on the ball since going from the Championship to the Euros in the space of six months thanks to his impressive performances for Crystal Palace, while Kobbie Mainoo was the revelation of Manchester United's season, with the 19-year-old capping a brilliant breakout campaign with a goal in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher also deserves the utmost credit for somehow managing to play well amid the chaos surrounding Stamford Bridge and constant transfer speculation over his future. The 24-year-old is a pressing monster and his tenacity could prove invaluable against top teams later in the tournament.

What England are most in need of going into the group stage, though, is an adventurous player capable of finding a way through deep-lying defences with precise and progressive passing. Alexander-Arnold unquestionably fits the bill. There is no better passer of the ball in Southgate's squad, and given he'll also undoubtedly have the freedom to drift right at times, his crossing could also prove invaluable to getting the ball in behind opposition backlines – or onto the head of Harry Kane.

Wharton, 20, was playing in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers at the start of this season and Mainoo, 19, was yet to make his breakthrough at Manchester United. Now the former has starred for Crystal Palace and the latter has been a key player for the Red Devils – which led to both getting selected for England's final 26-man Euro 2024 squad. Arsenal star Rice, 25, feels with these two in the Three Lions' midfield, the team's future is bright.

    WHAT DECLAN RICE SAID

Rice told reporters: “I think we saw in the last camp against Belgium and Brazil what Kobbie could do. Obviously the last six months, all season really, what he’s done at Manchester United and he clearly deserves his place in the squad. Adam played his first half of the season in the Championship, came to Crystal Palace and has been outstanding. I think in training he’s impressed a lot of players – he is so composed and calm on the ball. He’s got a beautiful left foot, just a really down to earth boy, wants to learn. I think he’s one of those that doesn’t get fazed by big things. So they are two great additions and the future’s looking bright in midfield.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

England are aiming to win their first silverware since the 1966 World Cup and this squad may be their best chance to end that barren run. With young talent such as Wharton, Mainoo, and Rice, the Three Lions are primed to have a successful tournament in Germany this summer.

    WHAT NEXT?

Rice, Wharton, and Mainoo could feature in England's final warm-up game against Iceland on Friday night but it remains to be seen who will be in Gareth Southgate's starting XI for their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia on June 16.

Carragher joked about Abdo's not being 'loyal' on airAbdo addressed awkward moment the following nightCBS presenter admits she was 'hurt' at timeWHAT HAPPENED?

Fans on social media reacted fervently to the original incident, when Carragher made things awkward with a misjudged on-air jibe at his fellow broadcaster during CBS Sports' coverage of Arsenal vs Porto in the Champions League in March. Abdo put the matter to bed in a broadcast the following night, but has since revealed that it did have an impact on her.

According to Abdo, "What Jamie said came from nowhere. It was just a quick line, it was meant to be funny, sometimes they hit, sometimes they don't. Speaking to iFLTV, she continued: "That one went a little bit sideways. I felt a little bit hurt but it is what it is. You move on. We talked about it, we're all good, nothing really to talk about."

In the aftermath of the incident, Abdo's boyfriend Malik Scott – a former boxing pro who now coaches Deontay Wilder – warned Carragher not to overstep the line, saying "her being irritated by it a little bit is what really got to me… If Kate gets upset then it's a really big deal to me and I'll give him a call and if he doesn't pick up my call, then I’ll show up in a physical manner." However, Abdo smoothed things out in her interview with iFLTV, insisting "Malik does not want to fight Jamie".

Carragher's comment may have understandably hurt Abdo, but it appears to be water under the bridge, with the pair still cracking jokes and getting on during CBS' acclaimed Champions League coverage. After watching Madrid squeeze past Manchester City earlier this week, they'll no doubt be looking forward to the Spanish giants' semi-final clash against Bayern Munich on 30 April.

Afghanistan to face Ireland in maiden clash of Test cricket's new boys

Ireland will begin their first overseas Test match on St Patrick’s Day – March 17 – when they take on Afghanistan next year, in what will be a second Test outing for both of the game’s newest senior nations. The Test will be the culmination of a nine-match itinerary, which will also include three T20Is on February 23, 24 and 26, and five ODIs on March 2, 4, 7, 9 and 12 – all in the northern India city of Dehradun, Afghanistan’s home from home. Both teams made their Test debuts in 2018, with Ireland taking on Pakistan in Malahide in May, before Afghanistan played India at Bangalore in June.”Afghanistan are a quality side with world-class players – it’ll be a great challenge in their ‘home’ conditions,” said the Ireland batsman, Andrew Balbirnie.”The Afghanistan series is a major step forward for Irish cricket as the tour is the first one as a Full Member.””It will no doubt be a test for the entire squad – taking on Afghanistan in subcontinent conditions will require a level of adjustment by both our batting and bowling units. For Afghanistan, the limited-overs leg of the tour will form part of their preparations for next year’s World Cup – a tournament for which they qualified in remarkable circumstances in Zimbabwe last year.Ireland missed out on that showpiece event, but their highlight of 2018 promises to be a maiden Test match against England at Lord’s in July, a four-day affair that will form part of their hosts’ preparations for the Ashes which get underway on August 1.”The level and regularity of top-quality international cricket in 2019 will be exciting for Irish cricket fans,” said Balbirnie.”The year will start with this Afghanistan series, and will involve a busy home schedule of matches involving multiple Full Member nations – starting with an ODI against England at Malahide in May.”There’s also the Lord’s Test against England in July, and the year will end with the T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament in October.”

    Mature Hales weathers the storm

Amid a spluttering start to England’s Test summer, Alex Hales played with the sort of discipline that suggests he has the game to succeed at this level

George Dobell at Headingley19-May-2016Like a sprinter running a marathon or a sports car delivering bricks, Alex Hales took on an unfamiliar role for England on the first day of the Investec Test at Headingley.Hales came into this side with a reputation as a dasher. He was, at least up to a point, meant to be England’s answer to David Warner: an aggressive opening batsman who took the attack to the opposition and set the tone for the way in which “new England” see themselves as a team. But here, as his colleagues perished to overly aggressive shots – pushing at balls a fraction too short or wide for the stroke on a typical May pitch that offered enough movement to keep the bowlers interested – Hales left with a discipline that will have surprised those who witnessed him batting in South Africa. It was exactly what England required, too. While fashion dictates that modern cricket has to be played at full speed, fashion also gave us mullets and double corduroy. While Test cricket survives, there will be a place for the leave, the block and the patient accumulation of runs. And in conditions such as this, with the ball swinging and the pitch offering a little seam movement, trying to hurry is akin to driving as quickly as possible to get through fog.The surprise was more that Hales supplied the foundation that England required. While his captain, the notoriously obdurate Alastair Cook, was drawn into a drive well away from his body, Hales showed that the old-fashioned attributes by which Test openers used to be judged – crease occupation, shot selection and patience – still have value in the modern game. There were still some classy strokes. When the bowlers strayed on to his pads, he whipped through midwicket and when the ball was over-pitched he drove elegantly. Rangana Herath was cut nicely, too. But we knew Hales could play the attacking strokes; it was the defensive ones of which we had to see evidence.Under the easy-going veneer, there is a steel to Hales. It took confidence to sit out the first few weeks of this county season; confidence to sit out the IPL; confidence to ignore those he knew would want him to push on the scoring rate here. While the likes of Sam Robson were plundering early season runs, Hales had the wisdom to understand that what he required most, after an emotionally draining winter in which he featured in the England team in all three formats, was a mental break. And while few would have blamed him had he capitalised on his white-ball reputation – he has been rated No. 1 in the world in T20 cricket – and pursued a future as a T20 specialist, he has instead demonstrated his ambition by taking the higher-risk option and prioritised a Test career. Most of all, he has learned that you have to earn the right to score quickly in Test cricket. You have to see off the new ball, wear down the bowlers and gain experience. Those urging him to push on in such circumstances are doing him no favours.None of this should come as a surprise. Marcus Trescothick, arguably England’s last quick-scoring, successful Test opener, took 25 deliveries to get off the mark on Test debut and 122 balls to reach his half-century. His strike-rate in Test cricket was only 46.34 for the first two years of his Test career, which is very similar to Cook’s overall (46.30). From 2002 until the end of his career, it was 57.45.But Trescothick understood, as Hales appears to now, that he had to give himself a chance to score quickly in Test cricket.

Under Peter Moores at Nottinghamshire, Hales has noticeably tightened up his game and now appears to have the confidence in his defence to endure long scoreless spells

The most pleasing aspect of this innings from Hales was that it suggested he had learned from his previous experience. His performance in South Africa was characterised by fragility outside off stump. Unsure which balls to play and which to leave, which balls to attack and which to defend, his uncertainty was exploited to the tune of five catches in the cordon during the series.Recognising his weakness, he returned to the nets at Nottinghamshire. Under the watchful eye of Peter Moores, a consultant coach at the club, he has noticeably tightened up his game and now appears to have the confidence in his defence to know he can endure relatively long scoreless spells. He took 115 balls to make 34 for Nottinghamshire against Yorkshire at the start of the month – a mature innings in demanding circumstances – and, after only one scoring shot in his first 26 balls here, has already produced, in terms of balls received, his longest Test innings. He will resume 29 short of a maiden Test century.”I’ve tweaked a couple of things just outside off stump,” Hales said. “In South Africa I was caught between defence and attack a couple of times and that’s something I’ve been working upon. It’s still a work in progress and I think that’s going to be key to whether I’m successful as a Test player.”I didn’t feel out of my depth in South Africa. Even when I wasn’t scoring runs, at no point did I feel out of my depth. It was more about me making mistakes than bowlers getting me out and, at the start of my career, I think I would prefer that. I know I’m still a work in progress.”I took an extra couple of weeks to recharge myself. And that’s done me the world of good. When I came back to practice it was a lot more intense. I knew what I wanted to improve and I feel like I’ve come a long way in the last six months. There was no inkling from the selectors whether they would stick with me.”It was a challenging pitch and a challenging situation today. It was tricky. There was swing all day and some nibble and some bounce. I had to rein myself in a bit.”This does not mean England’s search for a partner for Cook is over. On another day, the thick-edged drive that bypassed third slip and gully when he had 4 would have gone to hand; on another day, one of his slightly uppish cuts could have gone to a fielder. It is telling that he used the phrase “work in progress” about his game twice and he will be aware that both Robson and Adam Lyth hit Test centuries at Leeds only to be dropped within a few months. But this was an encouraging step forward. As an aside, it is amusing to consider how such an innings from Nick Compton might have been received. Would he have been hailed for his determination or criticised for his limitations? While Hales was lauded for playing himself in and giving himself a chance to build an innings, would Compton have been criticised for putting too much pressure on his partners? He gave his detractors too much ammunition here with an edge to a regulation delivery in the channel outside off stump, but it does not always seem he is judged by the same standards as his colleagues. The difference, perhaps, is that when Hales bats in such a manner, he is playing within himself, while Compton probably does not have that extra gear. But for an England side that again found themselves five wickets down uncomfortably early – they lost 3 for 2 at one stage – it is not the speed of scoring that is the issue so much as the speed of wickets falling. But what a shame that only 9,436 people should be on the ground to witness an absorbing day’s play. Everyone understands the importance of satisfying the broadcasters and the level of their investment to the English game. But there remains little evidence that there is an appetite – or a climate – to watch Test cricket in England in May outside London. While recent initiatives announced by Andrew Strauss may help generate a little more interest in international cricket, the more pressing issue is gaining greater exposure for the sport as a live spectacle either online or on TV. Ticket sales for Durham are significantly worse than those for Headingley.
