Nottingham Forest now offered chance to sign Michy Batshuayi for Nuno

Nottingham Forest appear keen on striking deals this month under Nuno Espirito Santo and have now turned their attention to a proven Premier League performer as a potential target, according to a report.

Nottingham Forest transfer latest…

Despite being one of the more active sides on the market across the last year or two, Forest have been at the centre of a quiet transfer window so far and are yet to make a single signing this month.

Part of the reason for this may be the fact that the Tricky Trees are awaiting news on whether they will be charged for flouting Financial Fair Play restrictions after a pattern of heavy spending in the Championship and a subsequent continuation of this in the top-flight.

Nottingham Forest could land dream Gibbs-White partner in £11m speedster

Nuno Santo is keen to add a new attacker to his side this January.

ByTom Lever Jan 14, 2024

As per The Times, Nottingham Forest are deemed to be most at risk by experts and could be joined by Everton, who are in danger of being penalised for a second time following their controversial points deduction. Liable clubs will see their cases fast-tracked and resolved by April, which will see any sporting penalties as a consequence of breaking the rules applied in 2023/24.

In light of these reports, Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri has indicated that Nuno's men could part ways with midfielder Orel Mangala this window, as he stated on social media platform X:

Despite this, Nottingham Forest look to be trying to find a way to bring players into the building and are said to be lining up a move for an ex-Premier League striker.

Nottingham Forest offered Michy Batshuayi…

According to reports in Turkey via Nottingham Forest News, Nottingham Forest have been offered the chance to Fenerbache striker Michy Batshuayi, which would take the form of an initial loan agreement with a mandatory purchase clause of £3 million.

Labelled "fantastic" by former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, the 30-year-old has fared well in Turkey this campaign, registering nine goals and three assists in 22 appearances across all competitions (Batshuayi statistics – Transfermarkt).

Despite their need for more goalscorers, it remains to be seen whether Nottingham Forest will turn to Batshuayi in the market due to their Financial Fair Play problems, which may limit incomings at the City Ground.

Matthew Short, Jake Fraser-McGurk star as Victoria overcome New South Wales

Victoria got a glimpse into the future with Matthew Short, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Will Sutherland starring to overcome New South Wales in a close contest at the MCG.Short put together a Man-of-the-Match display, making a career-best 88 and taking 2 for 21 that included the key wicket of Daniel Hughes. Fraser-McGurk stole the show with 54 on debut after scoring 51 on his Shield debut earlier this week. Sutherland took two sensational outfield catches and bowled Moises Henriques for 98 in the penultimate over of the match to seal the game for Victoria as the Blues veteran was on track to see his side home. The Blues were left to rue a game that slipped from their grasp. Daniel Sams’ career-best 5 for 46 helped restrict Victoria. His mix of cutters undid Aaron Finch, Marcus Harris, and Peter Handscomb. The Blues were 1 for 143 halfway through the chase with Hughes and Henriques in complete control. But Hughes’ dismissal, lbw to Short, triggered a collapse and Henriques ran out of support.Short and Fraser-McGurk put together an outstanding 95-run stand to underpin their total of 265 after Victoria won the toss on a good surface. They came together with the side on 4 for 150 after veterans Marcus Harris (44) and Peter Handscomb (38) were unable to capitalise on fluent starts. Short played beautifully, attacking the spinners with positive footwork on the way to his fourth List A half-century.But he was overshadowed by Fraser-McGurk. The 17-year-old made a stunning 54 from just 49 balls; four of his first five scoring shots were boundaries and in all, he struck seven fours and a six.Short threw away a century holing out with more than seven overs remaining and Victoria were bowled out with four balls left in the final over of the innings.Veteran seamer Peter Siddle showed his class taking the early wicket of Jack Edwards. But the game was slipping away from Victoria before Short turned it with two wickets in the middle overs. Siddle compounded the Blues pain by nabbing two more.Henriques tried to manage the chase with the tail but aside from Sams’ 13, none of the last eight batsmen reached double figures. Sutherland took a sensational diving catch in the outfield to remove Sams and then backed it up by removing Henriques with a yorker to leave 12 runs needed from the final over. The final pair couldn’t get it done.

Harry Kane 'must' start Euro 2024 final as Gary Neville reveals what Wayne Rooney said about Bayern Munich star's undroppable status

Gary Neville believes England captain Harry Kane will not be dropped for the Euros final against Spain and that he may be their greatest ever player.

  • England have reached Euro 2024 final
  • Neville says Kane must start
  • Rooney calls him England's greatest
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Ahead of England's Euros final against Spain on Sunday, following a semi-final win over the Netherlands, former Manchester United player Neville has spoken about how good Kane has been for his country. He hailed the Bayern Munich forward as "sensational" and did not disagree with ex-team-mate Wayne Rooney's claim that the forward is the Three Lions' greatest player.

    WHAT GARY NEVILLE SAID

He told Sky Sports News: "I spoke to Wayne Rooney four or five weeks ago before the tournament started and he said Harry Kane is the greatest England player ever. That is massive praise from someone who has been around the block with England in Rooney.

"I wouldn't fight to disagree with him either. Harry Kane has been absolutely sensational. I always called him gold when he was at Tottenham, you just know full well that he's going to deliver for you. He's a solid character.

"I think he's obviously below his best in this tournament, it does look like he is carrying something and it wouldn't surprise me at all if it emerged in a week or two that he's had issues during the tournament with something that he's trying to bandage up.

"You look at that [knockout] record now and some of the greatest goalscorers of all time are on that list, obviously Kylian Mbappe (who has eight knockout goals, the same number as Gerd Muller, Miroslav Klose and Antoine Griezmann) is seen as the best player in the world right now.

"Harry Kane is someone, ultimately at this moment in time, who will not be dropped by Gareth Southgate. I know there is a sense that people think we are better without him, but it wouldn't send a great message to the squad internally. He's very clearly their leader and Southgate has full, total faith in him."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

England are on the brink of making history in men's international football. They are one win away from winning the men's Euros – and a major international trophy on foreign soil – for the first time. And if Gareth Southgate's side are to become history-makers, they will need Kane to be firing on all cylinders against tournament favourites Spain.

    WHAT NEXT?

Kane's England side take on Luis de la Fuente's highly-fancied Spain at Olympiastadion in Berlin on Sunday night. The Spaniard's beat France 2-1 in the last four and will undoubtedly be the Three Lions' toughest test yet.

Joe Root: 'A week like this doesn't define us as a team'

Root put his side’s failure down to their first-innings collapse when they went from 74 for 2 to 112 all out

Valkerie Baynes25-Feb-2021Joe Root says England’s 10-wicket defeat to India inside two days of the third Test won’t define his team, who also fell out of contention for a place in the WTC final as a result. On a day when 17 wickets fell in a match described by his opposite number, Virat Kohli, as “bizarre”, Root, the England captain, claimed 5 for 8 with his part-time offspin as India, resuming on 99 for 3 were bowled out for 145, a first-innings lead of just 33.But his first Test five-for was small consolation when England managed just 81 in their second innings as Axar Patel claimed another five-for and 11 for the match and R Aswhin passed 400 Test wickets with his seventh for the match.Related

WTC final: England out, India need anything but defeat in final Test

“It sums up the wicket up slightly, if I’m getting five wickets on there, then you can tell it is giving a fair amount of spin,” Root told the host broadcaster after the match. “It’s nice to contribute but disappointing it’s in a losing cause.”That left India needing just 49 runs in their second innings and they got there with ease, Rohit bringing up the winning runs with a six off Root. While debate raged long into the night about the state of a pitch on which scarcely more than five sessions constituted a match, Root put his side’s failure down to their first-innings collapse when they went from 74 for 2 to 112 all out, having won the toss and chosen to bat first.”A week like this doesn’t define us as a team, we know what we’re capable of doing and we’ll come back and use the hurt of this week as motivation going into that last game,” Root said.”It was a very challenging surface,” Root added later in his press conference. “We are bitterly disappointed we have missed an opportunity more in that first innings than anything, having been 70-odd for two we had a real chance. In hindsight, if we had even got 200 that would have been a very good score on that wicket and the game would have been completely different.”It is frustrating and something we have to learn from – we have to get better and we have to keep finding a way to score runs on surfaces like this but it is very challenging, you could see that from the scores throughout the whole game – even guys that are more used to playing on turning wickets.”Joe Root claimed career-best figures•BCCI

Root also defended England’s selection of just one frontline spinner in Jack Leach, who took 4 for 54 in India’s first Innings as spinners accounted for all but two of the 30 wickets to fall in the match, with Moeen Ali sent home to rest and Dom Bess overlooked for this and the previous Test.”We looked to try and play our best side in terms of utilising that pink ball,” Root said. “We thought the wicket would hold together better than it did. Throughout all the practice days it seamed around, it swung prodigiously and seam looked a threatening option.”It’s easy in hindsight to select a different team but we wanted to play our seamers, which we feel is a big strength of ours, give them the chance to exploit those conditions, unfortunately it was a slight misread in that regard.”Root believed that the pink ball was a considerable factor for both batting sides, with Kohli also rating the batting overall in this match as not “up to standard”.”I honestly think the ball had quite a big factor in this wicket, the plastic coating on it, the hardness of the seam compared to the red SG ball, meant it almost gathered pace off the wicket,” Root said. “Credit to Axar, in particular, he exploited that exceptionally well and found a very good method, a very repeatable method, on that surface.”Pressed on the pitch conditions and whether host nations should lose WTC points should a pitch be rated poor by the ICC, Root said “I’m sure off the back of this things will get looked at” and “I’m sure they’ll look at other wickets around the world at different times”.”I think that this surface is a very challenging one, a very difficult one to play on,” he said. “It’s not for players to decide if it’s fit for purpose, that’s up to the ICC. As players we have to try to counter it as best we can.”Let’s not hide away from the fact that we’ve been outplayed here. On this surface we’ve still been outplayed and we have to accept that. It’s a real shame because it’s a fantastic stadium, there’s 60,000 people come to watch a brilliant, iconic Test match and I feel for them… the fact of the matter is it was a challenge for both sides and as a player you can only play what’s in front of you and credit to India, they outplayed us on that wicket.”Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma walk off the field with England following suit•BCCI

Now leading the series 2-1, India go into the last match starting on March 4 also in Ahmedabad, albeit in the morning as opposed to a day-night match, needing only a draw to reach the WTC final against New Zealand at Lord’s in June. England needed to defeat India 3-1 to reach the final.Root said it was important his side went into the final match of this series without any “baggage” from losing two on the trot.”We can’t have any scars going into the last game,” he said. “We’ve got to keep looking forward and we’ve got to keep remembering we won six on the bounce away from home coming into the last two games and won six on the bounce in the sub-continent, so you don’t become a bad team overnight.”We go into next week with a very good attitude and we take the hurt from this and apply it in our performance and use it as motivation to come away with something.”

Rashford named Real Madrid icon as his greatest opponent over Lionel Messi

New Barcelona signing Marcus Rashford once called a Real Madrid icon the best he’s ever played against ahead of Nou Camp legend Lionel Messi.

Marcus Rashford signs for Barcelona from Man Utd

The forward has officially competed a season-long loan move to the Nou Camp from Manchester United, with Barca also having the option to buy Rashford in 2026 for an initial £26m next summer.

Rashford becomes the first Englishman to sign for Barcelona since Gary Lineker, who did so back in 1986. Taking the number 14 shirt number with the Catalan giants, Rashford has been quick to praise current Barcelona star Lamine Yamal, calling the Ballon d’or contender “one of the leading players in the world”.

“He is a very special talent, and for me, I feel definitely last season, he is one of the leading players in the world, if not the best. Everyone wants to play with the best, and there is a lot of talent in this squad. I am happy and eager to play with them on the pitch. Maybe I can help them, and for sure, they can help me. It is going to be exciting.”

Rashford calls Cristiano Ronaldo best he’s played against

Back in 2017 when talking to ESPN, relayed by Football 365, Rashford was asked for the best player he has played with or against.

Still just two years into his professional career, the attacker said Cristiano Ronaldo was the best he had came up against during his time at the Bernabeu. However, he also name-checked former Red Devils teammate Wayne Rooney, Barcelona legend Lionel Messi and Brazilian star Neymar.

Former Real Madrid, Barcelona and Brazil striker Ronaldo also got a mention from Rashford, highlighting his World Cup displays.

“Brazilian Ronaldo has had the biggest World Cup performances, I’d say. And his were among the most enjoyable to watch. There were a lot of top players who performed in the World Cup and went to another level.”

Shane Warne named as Lord's-based coach for The Hundred

Shane Warne has been named as the head coach of the Lord’s-based Hundred franchise, with Lisa Keightley taking the equivalent role for the women’s team, ahead of the first year of the ECB’s new 100-ball competition in 2020.Warne, 49, is the third men’s coach to be confirmed for the tournament, following the unveiling of his fellow Australians Simon Katich, at Manchester, and Andrew McDonald in Birmingham. The Lord’s team will count Middlesex, Essex, Northamptonshire and MCC as stakeholders, and will be one of eight city-based clubs from Manchester, Leeds, Nottingham, Birmingham, Cardiff, Southampton and a second London team based at The Oval.Warne was famously captain-coach of Rajasthan Royals when they won the first-ever Indian Premier League title in 2008, and hopes that history can repeat itself next summer.”I’m very proud and very honoured to be asked to be the head coach of The Hundred team based at Lord’s,” said Warne. “The opportunity to coach in a brand-new tournament and work with modern-day players is something that I will really enjoy and I am looking forward to the challenge.”This tournament will unearth some heroes and hopefully some future World Cup stars for England and other countries.”I always want to be ahead of the curve because cricket benefits from innovation and that was the case in 2008 with the IPL, when I was captain-coach of the Rajasthan Royals,” he said.”I love the concept of The Hundred and it has grabbed my attention in the same way the IPL did. We built a team from scratch with a diverse range of players from different backgrounds and ages and I can’t wait to build the same mix of players to entertain the fans who come down to Lord’s for The Hundred.”Keightley, the former Australia Women’s coach, becomes the first female coach appointed for The Hundred. She secured her place in cricketing folklore in 1998 when she became the first female player to score a century at Lord’s while playing for Australia, in a one-day international against England. She has since served as England Women’s Academy head coach before returning home to coach Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers in the Women’s Big Bash League.”It is an honour to be appointed as the first female coach for The Hundred and to be a part of a tournament that is set to showcase the best women’s players from around the world,” she said.”I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a coach in England and the prestige and opportunity of this role made it an easy decision for me to come back.”

Mashrafe Mortaza defends Mushfiqur Rahim over run out blunder

‘I don’t think we need to go after Mushfiqur, he was trying hard to get him out’ – Mashrafe

Mohammad Isam at The Oval05-Jun-2019Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza defended Mushfiqur Rahim after he hit the stumps with his elbow when trying to run out Kane Williamson. The incident took place in the 12th over of the New Zealand innings when the Ross Taylor – Williamson partnership was at an embryonic stage. As the two batsmen got involved in a mix-up, Tamim Iqbal threw the ball from mid-on with Williamson still well short of the crease and almost given up. But Mushfiqur took the ball in front of the stumps, with his feet behind, and tried to break the stumps. Straight away Tamim and Shakib reacted in a way that suggested they knew what had happened, while the rest of the stadium were cheering the big wicket.Williamson and Taylor went on to add 105 runs for the third wicket, that set New Zealand in the right path.Mushfiqur Rahim’s error hands Kane Williamson a lifeline•Getty Images

Mashrafe, who was also following the ball closely during that incident, said that he wouldn’t blame Mushfiqur for the mistake and expects him to bounce back from it quickly. He said that with the catches he had taken off Taylor and Colin de Grandhomme, Mushfiqur had already started to make amends.”I don’t think we need to go after Mushfiqur,” Mashrafe said. “He was also trying hard to get him out. That throw was straight, but as a keeper it was hard to know if it was straight or not. Suddenly the stumps hit his elbow, but it happens. Mushfiqur is a professional player. He knows how to handle all of this. It is not as if this was the first mistake in Mushfiqur’s life. Every player makes mistakes.WATCH – Highlights of Mushfiqur’s error on Hotstar (India only)”For example, in the last match Soumya dropped a catch, but he has caught many difficult ones before that. I think that it can happen with Mushfiqur, and that it may happen again is a normal thing. We are not here to blame anyone, we are here to give our best. Even after that, the catches that Mushfiqur took off Ross Taylor and Grandhomme, those could have been turning points.”I don’t think there is a need to create pressure for anyone and neither do I think that he needs to think about this. If everything goes well in the next match, you will see that everything is fine again.”Mashrafe said that falling 30 runs short of their desired total was a bigger problem on the day. He said that Mushfiqur himself getting run out after a mix-up with Shakib, after they had added exactly 50 runs for the third wicket, was also a crucial point in the game.”If you don’t score big, you have to take all those chances. It happens in cricket. No one wants to make mistakes. I think the bigger mistakes was when we batted. If we managed to score 30 more runs, it could have been a different game.”That run out [of Mushfiqur while batting] was the turning point. They both got set in that moment. Again, Shakib and Mithun had their partnership broken when they were putting it together. If any of those two partnerships had gone into eighties or a hundred, things would have been different,” he said.

Cameron Bancroft will captain Durham as he continues his comeback from a ban for his part in the Newlands ball-tampering scandal close to a year ago.Bancroft, who was suspended for nine months over his role in the affair against South Africa in Cape Town, which saw Steven Smith and David Warner banned for one year, agreed in July to join Durham as their overseas signing for 2019. Bancroft’s ban ended in December, while March 29 marks the end of the international bans for Smith and Warner, who are both preparing to play in the IPL.Bancroft replaces Paul Collingwood as captain of Durham’s County Championship and Royal London Cup sides following Collingwood’s retirement at the end of the 2018 season.Durham coach James Franklin believed Bancroft’s international and franchise experience with Perth Scorchers in the BBL would be an asset.”We’re delighted to have Cameron with us for the season and we’re confident he has the attributes to lead this exciting young Durham dressing room,” Franklin said. “He has invaluable experience at the top level and has enjoyed a successful spell in England before, during his time with Gloucestershire (in 2016-17).”He’s proven since returning to first-class cricket over the last few months that he has the mental toughness, skill and attitude to excel at the highest level and I’m sure he will relish the challenge we have at Durham this season.”The 26-year-old Bancroft scored an unbeaten 138 during his first-class return with Western Australia last month. He has played eight Test matches scoring 402 runs at an average of 39.92 and opening the batting against England in the 2017 Ashes.Bancroft will join Durham for their second County Championship fixture against Sussex on April 11, missing the season opener at Derbyshire from April 5 reportedly because Western Australia want him to attend their post-season awards. Alex Lees will captain the side in his absence.

Pat Cummins, Travis Head to be Tim Paine's deputies for Sri Lanka Tests

Pat Cummins and Travis Head have been named joint vice-captains for the two Tests against Sri Lanka, replacing the dropped Mitchell Marsh and injured Josh Hazlewood.Australia went down the route of having two people in the position to support Tim Paine before the tour of the UAE to play Pakistan, but Marsh and Hazlewood have only played once together, in the Boxing Day Test against India in Melbourne.Marsh was then left out of the Test team and Hazlewood was ruled out of the two Tests against Sri Lanka with a back injury.Head has only played six Tests but is captain of South Australia, and Cummins has enjoyed an impressive season amid Australia’s Test struggles.Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc are the other players who may have been considered for the role given their seniority.”Travis was an impressive candidate when interviewed during the leadership identification process we conducted last year. He has also continued to develop his leadership qualities since joining the Australian men’s Test team,” national selector Trevor Hohns said.”Travis is a respected member of the dressing room, he consistently demonstrates care for his team-mates, provides valuable contributions in team meetings, and embodies the values of the team.ALSO READ: The contenders in Australia’s unsettled batting line-up“Pat is a fine young man who displays strong leadership though his actions on and off the cricket field. He is also a well-respected and popular member of the dressing room, who consistently lives and demonstrates the team’s values and standards. We also believe in having strong and even representation of both the batting and bowling groups, and Pat will provide important insights and knowledge when making decisions in the best interest of the team.”As Australia slumped to defeat against India, there was talk of Cummins being a future Test captain, but it was a suggestion the paceman had quickly dismissed.”I think it’s pretty ridiculous at the moment,” Cummins said before the Sydney Test. “We’ve obviously got Painey at the moment, who is doing a brilliant job, and I think it’s his for a long time now.”I feel like I’m too busy in the game bowling and when I’m batting putting all my effort into that. And when I’m not doing it I’m usually off with the fairies trying to recover. So, I don’t think I would make a very good captain at the moment.”The first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka will take place under lights at the Gabba from Thursday, with the second Test slotted for Canberra from February 1.

Erik ten Hag sends message to 'fantastic' Jadon Sancho after Borussia Dortmund dump Atletico Madrid out of Champions League but Man Utd boss reveals 'issues' remain regarding forward's Old Trafford future

Erik ten Hag hailed a "fantastic" Jadon Sancho but he insisted that there are "issues" which complicate the forward's future at Manchester United.

  • Sancho fell out with Ten Hag at Old Trafford
  • Gradually reviving his career at Dortmund
  • Ten Hag still unsure of Sancho's future at Old Trafford
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Sancho played a crucial role in Dortmund's success, starting both legs of the Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid, contributing to their 5-4 aggregate victory. Despite the winger's impressive displays during the loan spell at Dortmund, his feud with Ten Hag continues to shimmer, which is proving to be an obstacle to alter his prospects at United.

  • Getty/GOAL

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

While acknowledging Sancho's excellence, Ten Hag highlighted that the winger's talent wasn't doubted at all by him. Instead, he showered praise on Sancho for reviving his career in Germany but underlined that talent alone doesn't resolve the problems which forced him to go out on loan from Manchester United.

  • WHAT TEN HAG SAID

Speaking to reporters, Ten Hag said: "Of course, I follow international football and follow the players on loan at other clubs. It was a fantastic game, Dortmund against Atletico Madrid. A great performance from Dortmund and also for Jadon it's good news. He made his contribution to the result for Dortmund."

However, when asked if anything had changed about Sancho's future at Old Trafford, Ten Hag did not mince words and said: "No, but we know Jadon Sancho is a fantastic football player, so that is not a surprise for us. That is not the issue."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The loan stint in Germany has been fruitful for Sancho, but at the same time, it has further complicated Manchester United's ambitions of securing a Champions League spot for the next season. With England, Italy, and Germany vying for an additional slot based on UEFA's country coefficient, Dortmund's progress has favoured Germany in their quest for a fifth Champions League spot in an expanded version of the competition from the next season. This means England will continue to have four spots, which is a major dent in United's Champions League hopes.
