Pep Guardiola reportedly views €150m-rated Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz as a "dream" replacement for Kevin De Bruyne at Manchester City.

De Bruyne might leave City this summerGuardiola wants Wirtz as his replacementPushed for a transfer in JanuaryFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty ImagesWHAT HAPPENED?
With De Bruyne's contract at the Etihad set to expire on June 30, Guardiola is eager to reshape his squad and sees Wirtz as a long-term replacement who can lead City’s midfield for years to come, according to While Guardiola would have preferred to secure Wirtz’s signing in the January transfer window, Leverkusen made it clear that a move mid-season was not an option and the steep asking price was another major stumbling block.
Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE
Despite speculation surrounding his future, the 20-year-old is reportedly in talks with Leverkusen regarding a contract extension. The proposed new contract would run until 2027 instead of 2028, featuring a release clause of approximately €125 million (£104m/$130m) that would become active in summer 2026. Additionally, his salary is expected to increase from €8 million (£6.6m/$8.28m) per year to over €10 million (£8.34m/$10.34m), reflecting his growing importance to the team. However, if Wirtz opts against renewing his deal, Leverkusen are prepared to cash in this summer for €150 million (£125m/$155m), rather than risk losing him for a lower fee in the future.
DID YOU KNOW?
Guardiola has emphasised that City’s recruitment strategy must focus on securing top young talents who can help the club remain competitive for the next four to five years. This vision aligns perfectly with Wirtz’s profile, as the German international is already among the most sought-after young stars in European football – especially after registering six goals in eight matches in the Champions League this season.
Getty ImagesWHAT NEXT FOR MANCHESTER CITY & WIRTZ?
With Leverkusen potentially open to selling Wirtz this summer, Guardiola could have the perfect opportunity to secure his dream signing. However, it remains to be seen if City decide to match the huge €150m (£125m/$155m) price tag to replace a modern icon in De Bruyne with a 21-year-old who still needs more polishing.
Luke Shaw is reportedly edging closer to a return at Manchester United, who took a "cautious" approach with his latest injury setback.

Shaw has had an injury-marred 2024-25 campaignDefender still recovering from a setback suffered in DecemberSet to return to training next weekFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?
The 29-year-old left-back has endured a difficult period with recurring hamstring and calf issues, limiting his appearances for Manchester United to just five in the past year. After making only three substitute appearances for United in this campaign, the England international suffered another fitness setback in December, further prolonging his absence from the team.
AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE
At the end of January, Shaw was spotted in individual training sessions, sparking optimism that he was nearing a return to full fitness. has since claimed that Shaw could be out for another four weeks after suffering another setback, but has contradicted that timeline, stating that while the full-back will be unavailable for United’s FA Cup fourth-round clash against Leicester City on Friday, he is expected to resume full training next week, with the club taking a more 'cautious' approach to his recovery.
WHAT AMORIM SAID
United manager Ruben Amorim has emphasized that Shaw’s return to competitive matches will be gradual as the coaching staff aims to avoid rushing his recovery.
“It can take a little bit more time,” Amorim told reporters last week. “I think he needs to train more, to spend more time with his team-mates playing even like normal, small-sided games, not just working alone. When I feel it is the right moment, we will start with some minutes in the games.”
Getty Images SportWHAT NEXT FOR SHAW?
Shaw has been ruled out of Friday’s FA Cup tie, but may be targeting a return to action for Manchester United’s next Premier League outing against Tottenham on Sunday, February 16.
After a disappointing campaign last year, Eddie Howe and his Newcastle side will be looking to qualify for European football once again, having tasted Champions League action during the 2023/24 season.
However, Newcastle were unable to make big investments this summer due to PSR, making two big sales, and only spending €68.20m (£57m) on five incomings this summer.
The two players that left for big fees were Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, two highly-rated youth players who could have helped Newcastle this season, both of whom have started strong for their new clubs and would fit in like a glove alongside the likes of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.
Newcastle attack's start to the campaign
Isak has started this term fairly slowly, only managing one goal and one assist in his five Premier League games played. Gordon has also had a slow start, only scoring the one goal in his five Premier League appearances.
However, despite an underwhelming opening few games for their main men, Newcastle have got off to a strong start as a team, winning three of their opening five matches and sitting sixth in the league on ten points.
It is actually Harvey Barnes who has started the campaign strongest, scoring three goals, and providing one assist in his 248 Premier League minutes.
But if Howe had his way this summer, Barnes could have found himself with far fewer minutes, and may not have started the season in red-hot form, as the English manager was eyeing a possible right-wing addition to boost Newcastle’s chances.
Newcastle's interest in Noni Madueke
Newcastle reportedly had a strong interest in Chelsea winger Noni Madueke this summer with the Blues changing their stance on his availability over the course of the transfer window.
The 22-year-old has got off to a flyer under new manager Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, scoring four goals in his opening six games in all competitions. Madueke has been described as an “elite talent” by scout Jacek Kulig in the past, and he is definitely showing that level this season so far.

Madueke has started the season best in terms of goal threat, scoring 0.77 goals per 90 minutes, and taking a crazy 4.36 shots per 90, really showing his confidence and intention to test the opposition goalkeeper, and make things happen in the final third.
Barnes and Gordon have better passing metrics, averaging more key passes per 90 than Madueke, and more shot-creating actions. However, Madueke still averages more assists per 90, with 0.26 compared to Barnes’ 0.24.
With how Maresca sets up his Chelsea team, Madueke’s responsibilities lie in the final third, receiving the ball out wide, looking to beat his man 1v1, and then attack the goal, something he has done effectively to start the season, especially in their 6-2 win against Wolves, where the young forward netted a hat-trick.
The question is, would Madueke have started so strong for Howe’s side, and if he did join, would it have stopped Barnes thriving? One thing is for sure, the English winger definitely would have made the Newcastle squad stronger.

Arsenal did not need the services of Bukayo Saka as they beat Ipswich to close the gap on Liverpool at the top of the Premier League on Friday night.
The Gunners recorded a comfortable 1-0 win over the Tractor Boys, dominating proceedings at the Emirates.
It was a classic case of attack vs defence for the most part in North London. Aside from an instant Ipswich chance, Arsenal kept their opponents at bay, drawing them in before playing around them and creating several chances.
The first half saw the Suffolk side camped in their own box, withstanding wave after wave from Mikel Arteta's men.
Their resilience lasted until the 23rd minute when Kai Havertz netted the opener, firing in from a Leandro Trossard cross on the left-hand side.
Arsenal thought they had a second in the 34th minute after Gabriel Jesus scored from an impossible angle, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The second half was a much closer affair, with Ipswich coming out and having a go at the Gunners.
Declan Rice and Havertz both went close while Gabriel missed a sitter from point-blank range after getting on the end of a corner.
After a few changes from Arteta, the hosts regained total control in the latter stages and were more than deserving of the three points which will see them go six points behind leaders Liverpool.
GOAL rates Arsenal's players from the Emirates Stadium…

Goalkeeper & Defence
David Raya (8/10):
Rarely had to touch the ball but was composed when he did have it at his feet, playing around the Ipswich press inside his own box.
Jurrien Timber (8/10):
Was aggressive going forward and added an extra man in attack for the Gunners as they looked to break down a deep Tractor Boys defence, had a couple of efforts well saved for good measure.
William Saliba (8/10):
Performed to his usual standard alongside Gabriel and was rarely called into defensive action at the Emirates.
Gabriel (8/10):
Proved to be a big threat from set pieces and found himself in the attacking third a few times as Arsenal asserted their dominance in North London.
Myles Lewis-Skelly (9/10):
Excelled at left-back and looked like a staple of Mikel Arteta's team. Proved once again why the Hale End Academy is one of the best in Europe.

Midfield
Martin Odegaard (7/10):
Showed a little bit of rust under the lights but still orchestrated most of Arsenal's attacks and ensured his side played at their usual tempo.
Declan Rice (7/10):
Aside from a few overhit diagonals, the England international was pretty tidy. He flashed a shot over the bar in the first half and swept up any chance Ipswich had of hitting the Gunners on the counter attack.
Kai Havertz (8/10):
Worked well back in a midfield role and played off the shoulder of Gabriel Jesus to good effect. Scored a well-deserved goal and proved why he is the club's top goalscorer this season.
AFP
Attack
Gabriel Martinelli (7/10):
Covered in the right-hand side in the absence of Bukayo Saka and although he was not as effective as the Englishman, was still a handful for Leif Davis all night.
Gabriel Jesus (8/10):
Has been a revelation for Arsenal since returning to form and was unlucky to have a goal ruled out. Worked hard in both halves and helped lead the team to an important victory
Leandro Trossard (7/10):
Played the ball across the box for Havertz's goal and proved his worth in the starting XI.

Subs & Manager
Mikel Merino (7/10):
Arteta introduced him to regain control of the match in the second half which the Spaniard did to good effect.
Thomas Partey (N/A):
Was used as fresh legs to replace Rice for the final few minutes.
Mikel Arteta (8/10):
Recognised that he needed to make changes at 1-0 in the second half and both substitutions had an impact as Arsenal held out for the win.
Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 74 off 44 balls trumped Pathum Nissanka’s 75 off 53, while Ravindra Jadeja’s 45 not out off 18 outshone Dasun Shanaka’s 47 not out off 19 as India chased down Sri Lanka’s 183 for 5 with seven wickets and 17 balls to spare in the second T20I in Dharamsala. The win, India’s 11th on the trot in T20Is, gave the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. After being put in, Sri Lanka were only 111 for 4 after 16 overs but Nissanka and Shanaka ransacked 72 off the last four. Nissanka hit 11 fours during his stay, while Shanaka preferred the aerial route. He struck two fours and five sixes, two of them on the last two balls of the innings, to propel Sri Lanka to a formidable total.India lost Rohit Sharma in the first over of the chase and were 56 for 2 after eight overs, needing another 128 from the last 12. Initially, Shreyas seemed uncertain, shuffling around the crease, but once he began connecting his shots, the Sri Lanka bowlers looked helpless against his power and timing.Shreyas Iyer hit six fours and four sixes in his unbeaten 74•BCCI
Sanju Samson began scratchily too, but he took 23 off the 13th over, bowled by Lahiru Kumara, leaving India needing 56 off 42 when Jadeja walked in. Jadeja did the bulk of the scoring from there on, and handed India a comfortable win in the end.Sri Lanka’s sedate start Bowling first, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah made good use of the moisture in the surface. Both seamers got the ball to jag around, with Bumrah slipping in a few yorkers as well. Openers Nissanka and Danushka Gunathilaka tried to counter that by showing attacking intent but they struggled to connect their shots. In the first four overs, Sri Lanka scored only 15 runs and hit just one boundary. The step up With the ball still moving around, there was a case to give Bhuvneshwar a third over in the powerplay but Rohit went to Harshal Patel. Harshal tried his slower one with mixed results: there were a couple of plays-and-misses in the fifth over but also two boundaries. The next three overs featured a boundary each as Sri Lanka went past 50 in the eighth over. Gunathilaka then smashed Jadeja for six, four and six off the first three balls of the ninth over, with both sixes coming via slog-sweeps. Off the fourth ball, he went for another slog-sweep but this time Jadeja shortened his length a touch and bowled it further away from his arc to induce a top-edge, which Venkatesh Iyer gobbled up running in from long-on.Pathum Nissanka played plenty of inventive shots behind the wicket•BCCI
Nissanka, Shanaka launch onslaught The next two overs produced two more wickets – Yuzvendra Chahal trapped Charith Asalanka lbw and Harshal had Kamil Mishara caught in the covers with a slower one – but Nissanka kept the scoreboard ticking with a couple of fours off Bhuvneshwar in the 13th over. In the 15th, Dinesh Chandimal brought up Sri Lanka’s 100 with a straight four off Bumrah but the bowler dismissed him off the very next ball with an offcutter.Nissanka reached his fifty off 43 balls with a boundary off Chahal, before he and Shanaka went all-out. Shanaka launched Harshal for two sixes in a 19-run 17th over, while Nissanka used the lap and the reverse lap to help take 14 off Bumrah in the 18th.Bhuvneshwar was the next to bear the brunt as Shanaka hit successive balls for six and four. Bhuvneshwar dismissed Nissanka with the last ball of his spell but Shanaka wasn’t done yet. He smashed Harshal for two sixes and a four in the 20th over, which also featured four leg-byes and went for 23 in all.Pace like fire If Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah tested the Sri Lanka openers with swing, Dushmantha Chameera and Kumara troubled Indian with raw pace. Rohit played on to Chameera in the first over; it was the fifth time Chameera had dismissed him in T20Is, the most for any bowler-batter combination. Kumara began his spell with a 146.7kph thunderbolt. With his second ball, he rattled Ishan Kishan by hitting him on the helmet. In the fifth over, Shreyas hit Binura Fernando for three successive fours but Kumara got rid of Kishan with the first ball of the next over. The batter tried to whip one towards midwicket but ended up lobbing it towards mid-on.Dushmantha Chameera dismissed Rohit Sharma for the fifth time in T20Is•BCCI
Shreyas breaks the shackles, Samson joins in belatedly India managed just 12 runs from overs six to eight before Shreyas stepped out to left-arm spinner Praveen Jayawickrama and launched him for back-to-back sixes. At the halfway stage, India were 80 for 2, needing 104 from the last ten overs. Shreyas hit two more sixes in the next two overs, the first one bringing up his half-century off just 30 balls.Samson was on 17 off 19 balls before hitting three sixes and a four in Kumara’s third over. He fell off the final ball of the over, trying to fetch another boundary, but the 23 runs from it had brought the equation down to 56 required from seven overs.Jadeja applies finishing touches For the second match in a row, Jadeja was sent in ahead of Venkatesh. He opened his account by creaming Chamika Karunaratne through extra-cover and hit three boundaries off the first six balls he faced. Soon, India needed only 31 from 30 balls. In the 16th over, Jadeja got stuck into Chameera, hitting him for three fours and six to all but seal the deal.

Liverpool draw 2-2 with Man UtdAlexander-Arnold has terrible nightSlot opens up on Real Madrid-linked starFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱AFPWHAT HAPPENED?
Manchester United were able to take a point away from Anfield thanks to goals from Lisandro Martinez and Amad Diallo, which cancelled out Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah's efforts for Liverpool. However, the key player in focus through the clash was Alexander-Arnold, who made a number of key mistakes, including setting the Red Devils up for a four-on-two counter late on, which prompted a fierce stare of disapproval from Reds captain Virgil van Dijk. Slot spoke out on Alexander-Arnold's performance in front of the media, and insisted he was not affected by the intensifying speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.
AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT SLOT SAID
Slot said: "I don't believe in those things. I think nine out of 10 people will tell you that it affected him, but I'm one of the 10 that tells you I don't think that affected him.
"What I think affected him was that he had to play Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot who are two starters for Portugal, great, great players. We have a fantastic player here in Diogo Jota and he's not even playing for Portugal, so that tells you how much quality United have. And if these players set themselves to a game, and that is what United once in a while does, then it's very difficult to play against them.
"I think it is more difficult for Trent to play against Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot than it is the rumours that were there in the week. That's my opinion, but everyone will probably tell you it's to do with the rumours."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Talking further about Alexander-Arnold's performance, Slot added: "It was clear Trent had some difficult moments as we as a team had but that is also for Trent not the first time. I think the majority of games he has played for this club he was very, very good but I can't believe if people tell me he's never played a bad game for this club, so that's probably happened before and mostly against quality players like United have."

The Liverpool right-back is unlikely to leave Liverpool in January despite the reports suggesting Real Madrid are interested in completing the signing this month. Alexander-Arnold will be expected to start again when the Reds take on Tottenham in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Alexander Isak's late winner downed Tottenham at St. James' Park, an unhappy stomping ground in recent years, which cancelled out an equaliser through Dan Burn's own goal.
Despite tasting defeat in the North East, Postecoglou still found the positives, namely how his Spurs side nullified a lot of Newcastle's threat but couldn't quite capitalise on their control for long periods.
"Very similar I guess to our first away game when we controlled it for the most part, nullified most of the threats that Newcastle have," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's 2-1 loss to Newcastle.

"t's obviously a difficult opponent here at home. The crowd create a pretty strong atmosphere for the home side, little things go their way but I thought for the most part we handled that really well. Then we gained the ascendancy in the game and we just needed to kill it off and we didn't and a disappointing second goal. I thought we switched off a little bit but the game should have been well over by then. So, another sore one unfortunately where we haven't got the rewards for our play, but ultimately it's three strong performances from the first three games. The results don't reflect it in that way."
Tottenham will be hoping to have one of Richarlison or summer signing Dominic Solanke back in time for Arsenal, as it is arguable that the north Londoners really missed a striker's presence up front.
Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke
Mikel Arteta's side, while likely to be competing for the Premier League title with Man City, are not invincible themselves – as Brighton showed during their 1-1 draw at the Emirates last weekend. Arsenal will also be without both star midfielder Declan Rice and summer arrival Mikel Merino, with Arteta looking pretty short in midfield.
As Postecoglou prepares to host Arsenal right after the international break, there is still some transfer activity going on in the background, and technical director Johan Lange has time to orchestrate more deals.
Tottenham can dip into the free agent market until the Premier League's squad submission deadline on September 14, and it is believed that Turkey international attacker Yusuf Yazici has been offered to Spurs on a Bosman deal after leaving Lille in June.
Meanwhile, the Greek and Turkish windows are still open until the end of next week, so an opportunity could arise for out-of-favour left-back Sergio Reguilon to leave.
Reguilon could make loan move from Tottenham to Fenerbahce
According to Turkish news outlet Fanatik, Fenerbahçe want to sign Reguilon on loan from Spurs, where ex-boss Jose Mourinho is personally keen on taking him.
The Süper Lig giants are aiming to make a statement signing, akin to that of their rivals Galatasaray sealing a move for Victor Osimhen, and Fanatik suggest Reguilon could be that player.
The £120,000-per-week defender was heavily linked with a summer exit which didn't materialise, but Mourinho is now looking to strike a reunion with Reguilon, who he originally brought to Tottenham from Real Madrid in 2020.
The 27-year-old is training with the first team but hasn't made a single matchday squad so far this season, despite being praised as a "quality player" from time-to-time (Noel Whelan).

This comes after Diego Simeone's men opened discussions over the 24-year-old very recently. Atletico started talks to sign Gallagher from Chelsea last week, according to some reports, and it has not taken long for the Spaniards to find the middle ground in a potential deal.
The England star, who enjoyed a fine 2023/2024 campaign under Mauricio Pochettino, becoming a mainstay player and one of their most important squad members, was rewarded for his excellent form with a call-up to Gareth Southgate's Three Lions squad for Euro 2024.
Gallagher started 37 Premier League games last season, scoring five goals and assisting his teammates on seven other occasions, but his contract expires next year and Todd Boehly risks losing the dynamic midfielder for nothing in 2025.

The Cobham academy graduate's sale would count as pure profit when it comes to Profit and Sustainability rules as well, meaning Chelsea chiefs are faced with making the unpopular decision to sell Gallagher this summer while they still can.
The Stamford Bridge side have attempted to tie the former Crystal Palace loanee down with a new two-year contract, which included the option of a third year, and would've put him in line with Chelsea's top earners in midfield.
However, Gallagher snubbed this proposal, and it is believed both Chelsea and Atletico are waiting on his final decision after both clubs found an agreement on his £34 million transfer fee.
"Understand Conor Gallagher turned down a new three year (2+1) contract extension at Chelsea today as well as in early June," wrote journalist Ben Jacobs on X earlier this week.
Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher
"Wages offered comparable to the highest earners in Chelsea's midfield. As reported, Chelsea have agreed a package with Atletico Madrid in excess of €40m including add-ons and will support a move to Spain if that's Gallagher's preference.
"No terms agreed yet. Aston Villa also had a club-record bid accepted for Gallagher in June but he decided to stay. Chelsea would prefer to sell Gallagher abroad than to a Premier League rival and the Atletico offer accepted is well below the one made by Villa."
As Chelsea wait on Gallagher, it is now believed they've agreed to sell another player to Aston Villa in a surprise development.
Chelsea agree to sell Lukaku to Aston Villa, but key issue stalls deal
Wantaway striker Romelu Lukaku is the subject of serious interest from Napoli, as the Serie A side speak with Chelsea over a deal for him with Victor Osimhen heading the other way (David Ornstein).
However, this hasn't stopped Villa from attempting to hijack Antonio Conte's move. According to Italian newspaper Il Mattino, via TUTTOmercatoWEB, Villa reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Lukaku this week, but there's a key issue, as the Belgian only wants to reunite with Conte in Naples.
Chelsea want the 31-year-old, who cost £98 million to re-sign from Inter Milan in 2021, to accept a move to the Midlands – but Lukaku has set his sights on a return to the Italian top flight instead.
Called a "complete" striker by Leonardo Bonucci, Lukaku's best goalscoring seasons have come during his stints in Serie A. He even guided Inter to a Scudetto triumph during the 2020/2021 season under Conte, scoring 24 and bagging a further 11 assists in the league alone.
Nottingham Forest are reportedly interested in signing a "world class" player in the summer transfer window, following the recent injury setback to midfielder Danilo.
Nottingham Forest eyeing signings after Danilo blow
Nuno Espirito Santo has been rocked by the injury suffered by Danilo on the opening weekend, with the Brazilian expected to be out for many months with a broken leg. It was a cruel blow for the midfielder, who has grown into such an important player for the Reds.
Last season, the 23-year-old made 29 appearances in the Premier League, 20 of which were starts, and he chipped in with two goals and assists apiece as well.
It isn't only Nuno that Danilo has shone under either, with Steve Cooper heaping praise on him during his time in charge: "He is an exciting player; an exciting prospect and somebody I’m trying to manage carefully in terms of the exposure we give him.
"That means we must play him as well when we feel it’s right for him. You want a quick impact when you sign a player, but sometimes when young players come to clubs, it can be months before they even get a game. We are really happy with him."
The Forest star's absence has heightened the need to bring in a replacement before the summer transfer window closes on Friday night, and it looks as though a top-quality player is being lined up to come in.
Nottingham Forest plot move for "world class" ace
According to Football Insider, Nottingham Forest are interested in completing the signing of West Ham midfielder James Ward-Prowse, with the Englishman struggling for minutes at the London Stadium. The Reds are "plotting an ambitious late move" for the England ace, and he is "not in the plans of Irons boss Julen Lopetegui following their big-money transfer splurge this summer".
James Ward-Prowse celebrating scoring for West Ham.
Ward-Prowse could be a fantastic signing by Forest if they can strike a deal in the coming days, with the 29-year-old now an extremely experienced player who has proven himself at a high level over many years.
The Englishman has 101 goal contributions (56 goals and 45 assists) in 381 Premier League appearances, as well as winning 11 caps for for his country, and David Moyes waxed lyrical over his set-piece brilliance during their time together at West Ham.
It is hard to find any negatives to Forest signing Ward-Prowse, considering his technical ability and experience, and the fact that he is still only 29 means they wouldn't be bringing in a fading force.
