Trent Alexander-Arnold is too good to sit on the England bench – playing the Liverpool right-back in midfield at Euro 2024 is a risk worth taking

The 25-year-old may have little experience of operating centrally, but he has the requisite skills to thrive in the role

What's this? Is Gareth Southgate about to go out swinging? England's famously amiable manager has already shown his ruthless streak ahead of Euro 2024 by ditching popular players such as Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford. Now, it seems he's ready, willing and able to make some bold calls as he looks to belatedly bring an end to his country's agonising 58-year title drought.

Having already taken a huge chance on Luke Shaw's fitness, the latest reports coming out of the England camp suggest that Trent Alexander-Arnold will start Sunday's Group C clash with Serbia in Gelsenkirchen – and not at right-back either, but in midfield.

It's a daring decision, given the enormity of the occasion and the fact that the Liverpool ace has so little experience of playing centrally. However, it's a risk well worth taking, an exciting gamble that could pay off spectacularly for Southgate in Germany.

    Failed first experiment

Southgate has had this idea in his head for an awful long time now. He first experimented with Alexander-Arnold's position in a World Cup qualifier against Andorra all the way back in September 2021.

However, the initial results were hardly encouraging. "It was difficult to get on the ball for me," Alexander-Arnold told . "I found it a lot more difficult to get on the ball in those tight spaces."

He's started just five more games in England's midfield in the interim – and not once against top-class opposition. We're also talking about a player who has played just 112 minutes of tournament football across two games – 79 of which came in the group-stage dead rubber against Belgium at the 2018 World Cup.

In that sense, it seems almost unfair of Southgate to ask Alexander-Arnold on the eve of a major tournament to go and run the game for England at Euro 2024. However, there are several reasons why this could work – and why Southgate needs it to work.

  • Getty

    'So many benefits'

For starters, Alexander-Arnold no longer has any doubts over the change of role. On the contrary, he's welcomed it. He has admitted himself that his performances at right-back for England were, by the lofty standards he had set himself, "mediocre". At international level, he simply wasn't afforded the same "freedom" to get forward and make use of the attacking arsenal at his disposal.

Consequently, he has welcomed the chance to move into midfield. "That's something that really excites me and I feel will get the best out of me in the [England] set-up," he said last October. "This is the most exciting time for me with England."

Jurgen Klopp obviously played a key role in that regard by using Alexander-Arnold as an inverted full-back to great effect at the tail end of the 2022-23 campaign – and at regular intervals last season, allowing the Liverpudlian to grow ever more familiar with playing in midfield.

"There are so many benefits," Klopp said last December on after watching Alexander-Arnold turn in decisive displays against Manchester City and Fulham in the Premier League. "As a team we were not ready in the past and Trent wasn’t ready. We thought last year in a bad moment for us that it was time to change something big and we did [against Arsenal], and it worked out.

"Trent enjoys it. I think he is quite happy with the position and how he can interpret it. I am very happy with him and how it's going."

  • Getty

    'An eight or six eventually'

Of course, Klopp was reluctant to make the move into midfield permanent because he feared that by doing so, Liverpool would be depriving themselves of "the best offensive right-back in the world". For the Reds, it just didn't make sense at the time. They still needed Alexander-Arnold in his original position, at least occasionally.

Unlike Liverpool, though, England have long had a plethora of top-class right-backs to choose from – which is why Southgate first started toying with the idea of playing Alexander-Arnold in midfield.

It's also worth noting that Klopp always said that "Trent will play as an eight or a six eventually. It will happen." And the time is now, as far as Southgate is concerned.

    Best option alongside Rice

There are obviously other strong contenders to start alongside Declan Rice at Euro 2024. Adam Wharton has impressed all and sundry with his composure on the ball since going from the Championship to the Euros in the space of six months thanks to his impressive performances for Crystal Palace, while Kobbie Mainoo was the revelation of Manchester United's season, with the 19-year-old capping a brilliant breakout campaign with a goal in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher also deserves the utmost credit for somehow managing to play well amid the chaos surrounding Stamford Bridge and constant transfer speculation over his future. The 24-year-old is a pressing monster and his tenacity could prove invaluable against top teams later in the tournament.

What England are most in need of going into the group stage, though, is an adventurous player capable of finding a way through deep-lying defences with precise and progressive passing. Alexander-Arnold unquestionably fits the bill. There is no better passer of the ball in Southgate's squad, and given he'll also undoubtedly have the freedom to drift right at times, his crossing could also prove invaluable to getting the ball in behind opposition backlines – or onto the head of Harry Kane.

Wharton, 20, was playing in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers at the start of this season and Mainoo, 19, was yet to make his breakthrough at Manchester United. Now the former has starred for Crystal Palace and the latter has been a key player for the Red Devils – which led to both getting selected for England's final 26-man Euro 2024 squad. Arsenal star Rice, 25, feels with these two in the Three Lions' midfield, the team's future is bright.

    WHAT DECLAN RICE SAID

Rice told reporters: “I think we saw in the last camp against Belgium and Brazil what Kobbie could do. Obviously the last six months, all season really, what he’s done at Manchester United and he clearly deserves his place in the squad. Adam played his first half of the season in the Championship, came to Crystal Palace and has been outstanding. I think in training he’s impressed a lot of players – he is so composed and calm on the ball. He’s got a beautiful left foot, just a really down to earth boy, wants to learn. I think he’s one of those that doesn’t get fazed by big things. So they are two great additions and the future’s looking bright in midfield.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

England are aiming to win their first silverware since the 1966 World Cup and this squad may be their best chance to end that barren run. With young talent such as Wharton, Mainoo, and Rice, the Three Lions are primed to have a successful tournament in Germany this summer.

    WHAT NEXT?

Rice, Wharton, and Mainoo could feature in England's final warm-up game against Iceland on Friday night but it remains to be seen who will be in Gareth Southgate's starting XI for their Euro 2024 opener against Serbia on June 16.

Carragher joked about Abdo's not being 'loyal' on airAbdo addressed awkward moment the following nightCBS presenter admits she was 'hurt' at timeWHAT HAPPENED?

Fans on social media reacted fervently to the original incident, when Carragher made things awkward with a misjudged on-air jibe at his fellow broadcaster during CBS Sports' coverage of Arsenal vs Porto in the Champions League in March. Abdo put the matter to bed in a broadcast the following night, but has since revealed that it did have an impact on her.

According to Abdo, "What Jamie said came from nowhere. It was just a quick line, it was meant to be funny, sometimes they hit, sometimes they don't. Speaking to iFLTV, she continued: "That one went a little bit sideways. I felt a little bit hurt but it is what it is. You move on. We talked about it, we're all good, nothing really to talk about."

In the aftermath of the incident, Abdo's boyfriend Malik Scott – a former boxing pro who now coaches Deontay Wilder – warned Carragher not to overstep the line, saying "her being irritated by it a little bit is what really got to me… If Kate gets upset then it's a really big deal to me and I'll give him a call and if he doesn't pick up my call, then I’ll show up in a physical manner." However, Abdo smoothed things out in her interview with iFLTV, insisting "Malik does not want to fight Jamie".

Carragher's comment may have understandably hurt Abdo, but it appears to be water under the bridge, with the pair still cracking jokes and getting on during CBS' acclaimed Champions League coverage. After watching Madrid squeeze past Manchester City earlier this week, they'll no doubt be looking forward to the Spanish giants' semi-final clash against Bayern Munich on 30 April.

Afghanistan to face Ireland in maiden clash of Test cricket's new boys

Ireland will begin their first overseas Test match on St Patrick’s Day – March 17 – when they take on Afghanistan next year, in what will be a second Test outing for both of the game’s newest senior nations. The Test will be the culmination of a nine-match itinerary, which will also include three T20Is on February 23, 24 and 26, and five ODIs on March 2, 4, 7, 9 and 12 – all in the northern India city of Dehradun, Afghanistan’s home from home. Both teams made their Test debuts in 2018, with Ireland taking on Pakistan in Malahide in May, before Afghanistan played India at Bangalore in June.”Afghanistan are a quality side with world-class players – it’ll be a great challenge in their ‘home’ conditions,” said the Ireland batsman, Andrew Balbirnie.”The Afghanistan series is a major step forward for Irish cricket as the tour is the first one as a Full Member.””It will no doubt be a test for the entire squad – taking on Afghanistan in subcontinent conditions will require a level of adjustment by both our batting and bowling units. For Afghanistan, the limited-overs leg of the tour will form part of their preparations for next year’s World Cup – a tournament for which they qualified in remarkable circumstances in Zimbabwe last year.Ireland missed out on that showpiece event, but their highlight of 2018 promises to be a maiden Test match against England at Lord’s in July, a four-day affair that will form part of their hosts’ preparations for the Ashes which get underway on August 1.”The level and regularity of top-quality international cricket in 2019 will be exciting for Irish cricket fans,” said Balbirnie.”The year will start with this Afghanistan series, and will involve a busy home schedule of matches involving multiple Full Member nations – starting with an ODI against England at Malahide in May.”There’s also the Lord’s Test against England in July, and the year will end with the T20 World Cup Qualifier tournament in October.”

Undercooked and underwhelmed, Australia head home to check the footy scores

A distracted and angry team played without passion or practice, in a tournament that is off the radar for Australia’s sporting public

Jarrod Kimber at Edgbaston10-Jun-2017In the gloom of Edgbaston, with England nearly home, the rain about to come, and their million-dollar bowler clutching his hamstring, Glenn Maxwell dropped a catch that he misread so badly it almost hit him. Even when it didn’t rain on Australia’s chances, their cricket was underwhelming.Australia have played only one completed match – and even that was incomplete. They were poor in their first match, and much better in the second. By the end of those two washouts, their tally of two points was exactly what they deserved. If you include their two warm-ups, they’d played in four games in England, and finished just this one.Essentially Australia’s only game of this entire tournament was a knockout game against the only unbeaten team, the favourites, the home team, and they came into it with no proper preparation. Most casual Australian cricket fans don’t even know what the Champions Trophy is, what it means, or how often Australia has won it. Plus, it’s footy season, and this is hardly the Ashes. Besides, the Australian players haven’t had to face anything as hostile on the field as they have from their own board. But even though Cricket Australia’s executives might have played even more reckless shots than their top order, this Australian team never looked right from the moment it took the field in this tournament. The problem started at No.4. Moises Henriques has never made more than 18 in an ODI. His top score for Australia is 81 not out in Tests. He averages 31 in List A cricket. He made two List A fifties in his first nine seasons of cricket. He’s only ever made limited-overs hundreds in domestic cricket. He’s 30. Ten Australian players have scored over 4000 runs in ODI cricket batting at No.4: Michael Clarke, Damien Martyn, Allan Border, Michael Bevan, Mike Hussey, Steve Waugh and Greg Chappell.Henriques has good recent form in the IPL, Big Bash and one-day cup, but at No. 4, in an ICC tournament, it was two or three places too high.It is not Henriques’ fault he is batting at 4: he is there because of a hole in the centre of this team. Australia are a batsman short and a bowler short. And to elongate the batting and rush through the fifth bowler’s overs quicker, Henriques has been brought in to fill this gap. The middle overs in this tournament are when bowling sides try and take wickets – England smashed through theirs with wrist spin and pace to make sure Australia had nothing left with which to strike at the death. But in the 13th to 15th of a must-win game, Australia was bowling Moises Henriques and Travis Head when they needed wickets with no catchers, no hope of a plan other than ‘”let’s hope Ben Stokes does something idiotic”.Would Australia have won the game with Marcus Stoinis instead of Henriques, or even Chris Lynn for Henriques, with Head and Maxwell combining for ten overs? Probably not, because even though the chemistry was wrong, the performances weren’t much better. Pat Cummins has taken two wickets in 25 overs in this tournament, and served up 144 runs – 52 of which came in his first five overs against New Zealand. Today, Stokes took him for 43 runs from 28 balls.Steven Smith was an angry man for much of a sorry Australia performance•Getty ImagesDavid Warner came into this tournament having made a staggering 23.5% of Australia’s runs since the last World Cup: here he failed in two of the three games. Steven Smith makes 16.5% of Australia’s runs; he failed in two out of three as well. Starc looked underdone in the first match, bowled beautifully in the washout against Bangladesh, and clutched his hamstring for much of this game.Australia’s game-plan relies on one of their top three batting big, to make up for their shallowness below them. Instead they lost regular wickets, and then 5 for 15 once the tail was exposed. Australia’s game-plan relies on their fast bowlers taking regular wickets. Instead they started brilliantly but couldn’t keep striking. And that was the ballgame. You could extrapolate this one game and talk about the Ashes, and a psychological dominance that England might feel they now have over Australia, but you probably shouldn’t. The Australians might be embarrassed that a team lost to England with six or seven potential Test players, but you know, they played a better-prepared team with better form in a must-win game, and they lost. Their ODI team might need a stronger allrounder, but other than that, it’s hard to answer any big questions from two washouts and a loss.Plus there are bigger questions in Australia that need to be answered right now, what’s Schapelle Corby up to, who’s winning in the footy and what is the best kind of fusion to win with on a reality TV cooking show?At 35 for 3, Hazlewood raps Stokes on the pad, the Australians are screaming, and one ball later they are coming off. Smith looks frustrated, but he has all day. He was angry when Henriques got out, he was angry when he got out, and he was angry when his team fielded poorly. The only time he wasn’t angry was when the rain came for the last time, then it was relief.Australia, caught rain, bowled England, 0.

Blockbuster move: Spurs target £40m PL star who can fix their Solanke issue

There has not been very much to shout about for Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are still in three cup competitions, but in the Premier League, they have slipped down to 15th, and unfortunately for the fans, it’s a position that accurately reflects the team’s performances.

With that said, one of the few positives this season has been how summer signing Dominic Solanke has adapted to life under Postecoglou, as the former Bournemouth ace has already hit double digits for goals and sits second on the club’s top scorers list.

However, the problem for the club is that they have nobody to genuinely challenge him for a place in the team, and now he’s out injured, they might have to rely on the injury-prone and inconsistent Richarlison for at least “a few weeks.”

Fortunately, that may not be the case, as recent reports have linked Spurs with one of the most exciting centre-forwards in the league, a striker who could solve their Solanke problem.

    Tottenham target Premier League star

According to a recent report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham are one of several teams interested in Ipswich Town star Liam Delap.

    Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

In fact, the report has revealed that the Lilywhites are ‘considering a blockbuster move’ for the Englishman this month but could be set to face competition from London rivals Chelsea.

However, the report also claims that the Tractor Boys are understandably reluctant to sell their star asset this month and that to get the deal done, the North Londoners would have to make an offer in excess of £40m for a player who cost just £20m in the summer.

It could be a costly and complicated transfer to get over the line this month, but given Delap’s incredible ability and potential, one well worth fighting for, especially as he could also solve their Solanke problem.

    Why Spurs should sign Delap

So there are two primary reasons that Spurs should be looking to sign Delap this month, with the first being that he’d be able to solve the club’s problem of having no real backup to Solanke.

We say that the Englishman could fulfil this role perfectly as the only other player he might be up against, if he’s not sold, would be Richarlison.

The former Everton forward is undoubtedly a talented player, but he’s had his fair share of injury problems in North London, and even when he’s played, he’s not been good enough, as exemplified by his lacklustre haul of 17 goals and nine assists in 75 appearances for the club.

In contrast, the former Manchester City prospect, whom Opta Analyst dubbed a “one-man battering ram”, has already racked up a tally of eight goals and two assists in just 22 appearances for Ipswich, which is a frankly sensational return for a relegation-threatened Premier League team.

This astounding rate of return for a newly promoted side leads to the second reason the Lilywhites should be looking to splash the cash on the Winchester-born gem this month: potential.

If the club are going to push ahead with the Postecoglou vision and build a team of young hungry potential superstars for the Australian to develop, then they’ll need to have a genuinely special successor in place for when Solanke ends up on the wrong side of 30, and considering he’s set to turn 28 this year, that isn’t all that far away.

Moreover, with the absurd number of games teams have to play nowadays, there are more than enough minutes to share between both strikers, which could, in turn, help prevent injuries.

Ultimately, Spurs already have a brilliant centre-forward in Solanke, but they need a backup and long-term heir to help Postecoglou’s project progress, and the perfect candidate for both of those roles is undoubtedly Delap.

Celtic submit huge bid to sign "incredible" upgrade on Maeda at Parkhead

Celtic are in the market to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch before the January transfer window officially slams shut at the start of next month.

The Hoops have recently been linked with an interest in Lille centre-forward Mohamed Bayo to come in and compete with Adam Idah and Kyogo Furuhashi in the number nine position.

Celtic'sKyogoFuruhashi celebrates with the trophy after winning the League Cup

They are also reportedly considering a move to sign Real Valladolid winger Raul Moro to add to their options on the wing, whilst the Scottish Premiership leaders are said to have held talks to land Brondby forward Mathias Kvistgaarden.

One of Celtic’s transfer targets for the winter window, however, appears to be increasingly difficult to get a deal over the line for, with the latest update on their pursuit of a Premier League forward.

Celtic told to pay big money for transfer target

According to Football Insider, the Hoops will need to pay a ‘big fee’ if they want to sign Louie Barry on a permanent deal from Aston Villa this month.

The report claims that several clubs want to sign the winger and that it will take a huge offer to convince the Villans to part ways with him on a permanent basis, as their current plan is to assess him in training before potentially loaning him out for the second half of the season.

It does not reveal how much money it would take to tempt the Premier League side into cashing in on Barry, but the Daily Mail recently reported that Celtic made an offer of £5m, with £5m in add-ons, for the 21-year-old.

    Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Whilst it remains to be seen whether or not that £10m bid is the ‘big fee’ that Villa are looking for, the Scottish giants should push hard to bring the Englishman to Parkhead before the end of the window because he could be an upgrade on Daizen Maeda.

Why Celtic should sign Louie Barry

Firstly, Barry would come in as a 21-year-old prospect with plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and improve over the years to come, which means that he would be a long-term asset on the pitch and as a possible future sale for profit.

Also, the English forward spent the first half of the season on loan with Stockport County in League One, the division that Matt O’Riley was once signed from, and caught the eye with his impressive performances at the top end of the pitch.

Barry, whose composure was once hailed as “incredible” by Declan Rice, is a right-footed left winger who has excelled at coming infield to score fantastic goals this term, as you can see in the clip above.

As you can see in the table above, the Villa youngster showcased his quality in the final third with a staggering return of 20 goals and ‘big chances’ created in 23 League One outings.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for Barry to come in and offer Brendan Rodgers an upgrade on Maeda, because of his ability to find the back of the net on a regular basis – something the Japan international has struggled badly with.

Celtic are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the striker this month.

    ByDan Emery Jan 18, 2025

Therefore, Celtic should consider upping the bid of £10m they have already made to sign him for a ‘big fee’ before the end of the window, due to the potential quality that he could provide on the pitch for the Hoops in the second half of the campaign.
