South Africa's chances of direct World Cup qualification hit by over-rate penalty

Qualification scenarios: What Sri Lanka, Ireland and South Africa need to do to gain direct entry to the 2023 World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Feb-2023South Africa’s hopes of direct qualification for the ODI World Cup later this year have suffered a setback after they were docked one point from their tally in the Super League standings for maintaining a slow over-rate during their defeat to England in the third ODI in Kimberley on Wednesday.Match referee Jeff Crowe imposed the sanction, finding Temba Bavuma’s team to be one over short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration. South Africa were also fined 20% of their match fee for the offence.South Africa are currently ninth with 78 points – they had 79 before the penalty – in the ODI Super League. The top eight teams gain automatic qualification to the 2023 World Cup, while the bottom five in the Super League will have to play the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier along with five Associate teams. Two teams from that qualifier will then progress to the World Cup and complete the line-up of ten contenders.Seven of the top eight spots in the Super League have already been taken by New Zealand, India, England, Pakistan, Australia, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The only spot that is still open is presently occupied by West Indies, who have 88 points, with South Africa (78), Sri Lanka (77) and Ireland (68) in the running as well.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Qualification scenarios for the 2023 World Cup

South Africa

Two wins for South Africa will take them to 98 points (barring any further over-rate penalties). Sri Lanka can go past them if they win all three ODIs in New Zealand, which is a tall order given that New Zealand have a 17-4 win-loss in home ODIs in the last four years. With South Africa being docked a point, Ireland can also catch up with them on 98 if they win all three matches against Bangladesh. In that case, net run rate will come into play (NRR is the second tie-breaker behind wins, but in such a scenario both teams would have the same number of wins). If the South Africa-Netherlands series ends 1-1, South Africa will finish level with West Indies, while Sri Lanka can move past them with two wins (or one win and two washouts).Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka will qualify for sure if they beat New Zealand 3-0 (or if they win 2-0 with one washout). However, if they lose a game, then they will depend on other results going their way: both South Africa and Ireland can go past them if they finish on 97.Ireland

They have two series three-match ODI series against Bangladesh on their calendar. One in March which doesn’t count towards the Super League and one in May which does. A 3-0 series win in that will take Ireland to 98 points, which will be enough for qualification if Sri Lanka don’t win all three games in New Zealand, and if Ireland finish ahead of South Africa (on points or NRR).West Indies

West Indies have completed their eight bilateral series in the Super League, and can only hope that none of the other teams in contention pass 88 points. Since the first tie-breaker is wins, West Indies would finish ahead of any of South Africa, Sri Lanka and Ireland if they finished level on points. For West Indies to make it, South Africa should lose at least once to Netherlands, Ireland should win at most twice, and Sri Lanka should win no more than one game in their remaining series.February 3 1800 GMT – This piece was updated to reflect that wins are the first tie-breaker, then net run-rate.

Fewer touches than Martinez: 4/10 Aston Villa star was just as bad as Mings

Aston Villa are now winless in their last four games in all competitions after a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Club Brugge on Wednesday night.

This was Villa’s first loss in the Champions League this season, and it will be a result that stings for Unai Emery’s men, owing to the comical nature of Brugge’s winner.

Tyrone Mings was front and centre of the Belgian side’s laughable goal in the contest, with the experienced 31-year-old lackadasically scooping the ball up after an Emiliano Martinez goal-kick, only for the referee to point to the penalty spot.

Mings' performance in numbers

It was a huge lapse in concentration from the Villa number five, who would have just been glad to be back out on the pitch getting more minutes after a serious injury layoff, away from the incident at hand.

Still, Mings’ moment of madness ultimately cost his side the game, with his entire display going down as one to forget.

Away from this freak incident, Mings struggled across the 66 minutes he was present on the Brugge turf, with only one duel being won from five attempted sticking out as a sorry statistic from his hour or so on the pitch.

Pau Torres will hope he is reinstated into Emery’s main XI for the next game Villa play away at Liverpool this coming weekend, as the West Midlands side aim to put this dire 1-0 defeat behind them as quickly as possible.

Whilst Mings’ performance stole all of the headlines for all of the wrong reasons, he wasn’t the only notable underperformer on the night, as Morgan Rogers also failed to impress out in Belgium.

Rogers' performance in numbers

Rogers was a bright spark for Villa the match before this sobering Champions League loss, with the ex-Manchester City youngster bagging his side’s only goal of the game in a demoralising 4-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in Premier League action.

The 22-year-old midfielder couldn’t raise any brief smiles in a similar manner away in Brugge, however, as Rogers failed to ever get going for his side on their European travels, with a drab 1-0 loss the unwanted final outcome.

Looking at the table above, Rogers was nowhere near his best against Nicky Hayen’s hosts, with only 29 touches mustered up amongst other worrying numbers.

Even Martinez in-between the sticks managed to register more touches at a hefty 46, as Rogers simply let the game pass him by far too often.

Alongside a meagre 26 touches, the out-of-sorts Villa number 27 also failed to notch up a single on-target effort at Simon Mignolet’s goal, as well as only managing one successful dribble and one successful duel, as Brugge celebrated their big win come full-time whilst Rogers and Co trudged off the pitch downbeat.

Goal journalist Harry Sherlock would give the 22-year-old a low 4/10 match rating ater the game consequently, labelling his display as ‘bitterly disappointing’ when contrasted with his usually electric displays for Emery’s men.

Villa are deep into a sticky patch of form now after last night’s defeat, with Emery wanting a major response when his Villans side travel to Liverpool next, in what could end up being another defeat for his despondent side.

Leeds must sell Elland Road flop who was "really exciting" under Bielsa

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke will be pleased with where his team currently is in the Championship table, after they moved to the top on Sunday.

A dramatic 4-3 win over Swansea in Wales, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Wilfried Gnonto, ensured that the Whites moved above Sunderland and Sheffield United on goal difference.

However, the German boss could still have some decisions to make when the January transfer window opens for business in around five weeks.

There is one player in the squad who should be ruthlessly cashed in on ahead of the second half of the season, despite once being an exciting talent who was hailed by Marcelo Bielsa.

The Leeds talent who Marcelo Bielsa loved

In November 2021, the Argentine tactician brought teenage talent Joe Gelhardt into his Premier League squad and said that he was not surprised by his integration.

The former Wigan Athletic starlet’s finishing was described as “very good” by Bielsa, who also claimed that the forward “always creates danger” in matches.

Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.

Gelhardt, who pundit Jamie Redknapp dubbed a “wrecking ball” and hailed as “really exciting”, featured in 20 matches in the 2021/22 Premier League season and contributed with two goals and two assists as a teenage prospect.

He then played 15 times and provided two assists under Jesse Marsch in the Premier League the following term before being sent out on loan to Sunderland in January 2023.

Gelhardt scored three goals and assisted a further three in 18 appearances at Championship level for the Black Cats during that spell, before returning to Elland Road upon Farke’s arrival last year.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

Why Joe Gelhardt should be sold

In the 18 months or so since then, the 22-year-old forward has failed to do enough to suggest that he has what it takes to kick on and become a regular in West Yorkshire.

The left-footed attacker was rarely used during the 2023/24 campaign. He finished with zero goals and zero assists in ten appearances and two starts in the Championship, which shows that Farke did not trust him to play regularly in the second tier.

Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.

Gelhardt also scored one goal in three outings in the cup competitions, with a strike in an EFL Cup win against Shrewsbury Town, but that was not enough to earn more game time in the league.

This season, the young centre-forward has only played three times and amassed 73 minutes of action across all competitions for the West Yorkshire outfit.

Per Capology, Gelhardt earns as much as both Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe, on £15k-per-week. This suggests that the Whites are not getting value for money, as Joseph has scored two goals and provided three assists whilst Piroe has scored six and assisted two.

The former Wigan prospect, who was loved by Bielsa in his early days at Elland Road, has simply not kicked on since his early success in the Premier League under the Argentine boss.

He has failed to break into Farke’s team in the Championship and, now, must be ruthlessly ditched from the squad when the January transfer window opens, due to his lack of impact on the pitch.

Forget Browne: Sunderland could unleash deadly ace to solve Bellingham blow

Sunderland go into Wednesday night’s game away at Preston North End eager to pick up another three points, after a disappointing result against Queens Park Rangers last match in the Championship.

Regis Le Bris’ men – who had mustered up back-to-back wins on their travels before making the mammoth journey down to Loftus Road – had to settle for a share of the points in the end in a 0-0 draw, despite QPR occupying a spot in the league’s relegation zone.

The win slipped out of their hands courtesy of a red card picked up by Jobe Bellingham near the hour mark, as the energetic midfielder arguably let his side down.

Bellingham's form this season

It hasn’t been a breathtaking start to the new second-tier campaign by Bellingham, with the constantly growing 19-year-old only managing two goals and an assist from his 13 league games to date.

His worst performance of the season so far came at QPR, with a crunching tackle on Zan Celar not going unnoticed by the referee, who gave the promising Sunderland ace his marching orders.

Le Bris didn’t even think twice about attempting to appeal the teenager’s dismissal, with the ex-Lorient boss stating that the decision was “fair and clear” after rewatching the incident post-match.

With the promotion-chasing Black Cats now without Bellingham for three matches in the league, Le Bris has already stated that experienced former Preston North End man Alan Browne is a likely replacement.

But, nothing is set in stone regarding the Frenchman’s lineups until a teamsheet is revealed – and with three games giving him plenty of time to think – he could finally unleash this summer signing whilst Bellingham is suspended.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The player who could solve Bellingham issue

Milan Aleksic is yet to grace a pitch for his new English employers after sealing a move to Wearside right at the end of the transfer window, despite costing the Black Cats a bumper £3m to get in through the door.

The Mackems boss has opened up about a tricky language barrier stopping Aleksic from being launched into action in the Championship, but his time will surely come soon, with Bellingham out of action on the sidelines giving the exciting 19-year-old a potential fast-tracked opportunity to impress.

Aleksic had starred in his native Serbia for Radnicki 123 before Sunderland swooped in, firing home six goals and picking up ten assists from the midfield positions across 36 games, with social media account Serbian Football Scout waxing lyrical about the new Black Cats signing’s “deadly” final ball when his move was unveiled.

Also previously on the books of FK Partizan at U19 and U17 level, where a further 14 goals and eight assists were tallied up, it’s clear that Aleksic possesses the same eye for goal and chance creation that Bellingham has which saw the 19-year-old score seven times last campaign in his first full senior season at the Stadium of Light.

With Sunderland also gaining a reputation for being a club that gives youngsters time to blossom into top talents – 17-year-old Chris Rigg being front and centre of many lineups – Aleksic could be the next rising star at the club if given a chance.

The Black Cats boss could well view now as the best possible time to experiment with the complexion of his midfield, with the promising Serbian starlet being thrown into the deep-end potentially going down as an inspired alteration.

Tuchel has decided to begin his stint as head coach of the England national team by providing all eligible players a clean slate in relation to whatever happened during Gareth Southgate's stint. Chelsea and England legend Cole has urged Tuchel to consider bringing in the Blues captain Reece James for his first Three Lions squad.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT COLE SAID

Speaking to TNT Sports, Cole said: "He’s got so much to offer Chelsea and so much to offer England. It’s so great to see him impacting the game like he did tonight. Don’t give up on Reece James because there is still a real, real world-class player in there who can be a massive player for Chelsea and England. Hopefully, he can keep going now."

Getty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Cole's comments about James come after the right-back's spectacular performance against Copenhagen on Thursday in the Europa Conference League. Cole added: "He will have the respect of every player at Chelsea because of what he can do technically and physically. When he was at his best, he was as good as anyone in the world, no doubt about that.

"It’s just about him finding his inner peace and managing him into games. He can play in midfield, he did it when he was on loan at Wigan and got Player of the Year there as a young kid. He looks comfortable there."

WHAT NEXT FOR JAMES?

Tuchel is set to announce his first England squad over the next few days as the March international break looms around the corner, however, it is possible that James may not make the cut for the call-up as the Chelsea star has not had a lot of action this season due to injuries.

Cost £0: Maresca must revive Chelsea star who’s worth more than Madueke

Chelsea only have four points from a possible nine to start their Premier League campaign under Enzo Maresca, but the Blues have shown glimpses of a prosperous future.

Spirited in defeat against Manchester City on the opening day, dazzling in victory at Molineux, winning 6-2 amid masterclasses from Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke, and unlucky during last weekend’s draw against Crystal Palace, fizzling out after a blistering start, there are signs of a promising project in development.

Maresca will be displeased with his side’s loss of control during the second half against the Eagles, but the frontline continues to purr, and Madueke looks like he’s shaping into a real menace on the right flank.

Noni Madueke's start to the season

Chelsea signed Madueke from Dutch team PSV Eindhoven in January 2023, welcoming the one-time Tottenham Hotspur youngster for a £29m fee.

He might have burst into life this term but Madueke hasn’t had it easy since his arrival, joining at a turbulent time and failing to quite hit the ground, with Spanish media musing that he was seeking a way out of the club in December 2023.

Last season, he grew in stature under Mauricio Pochettino’s leadership and was once hailed as a “mentality monster” by personal coach Saul Isaksson-Hurst, something that has served him well in biding his time and rising to the fore at Stamford Bridge.

As per FBref, his newfound goalscoring quality has seen him rise to rank among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for non-penalty goals scored, at a rate of 0.53 per 90.

Moreover, he also ranks among the top 7% for pass completion, the top 4% for progressive carries and the top 10% for successful take-ons per 90, emphasising the technical and progressive properties that have won Maresca over, convinced the Italian to entrust him with a crucial role.

It’s indeed quite the show of faith for Maresca to have pushed Sterling toward the exit while continuing to promote Madueke’s skillset, with the 29-year-old joining Arsenal on a season-long loan.

Of course, Jadon Sancho was brought in soon after, with the fleet-footed winger hoping for a big resurgence after falling by the wayside with Manchester United.

Why Chelsea signed Jadon Sancho

With Sterling gone, Chelsea wanted to complete their bulging frontline with something of a like-for-like change, and while some have questioned the necessity of the deal, a long move with an option to buy for just £25m could prove to be a masterful piece of business from the Blues.

The England international, aged 24, is only three years on from signing for Man United in a £73m transfer, but he’s only scored nine times in the Premier League and spent the latter half of last season back on loan with Dortmund given his fractured relationship with Erik ten Hag.

So why did Chelsea sign him? And does Maresca believe that he can rekindle the dynamic player’s qualities, recapture the prodigious potential that had led to him being lauded as a “phenomenon” by talent scout Jacek Kulig?

Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund

Chelsea’s first team would have been just fine without the ace, but bosses viewed the possible venture as an opportunistic move. After all, Sancho has scored 53 goals and claimed 67 assists across 158 matches for the Yellow Wall.

He will not be overburdened by responsibility in west London and can focus on his football. He’s not the only Chelsea man in need of a resurgence this year, however, with Reece James the most lucrative name in Maresca’s ranks to be hoping for a return to the fore.

Why Reece James could still be Chelsea's main man

James joined Chelsea for a grand total of nothing, scoring on his debut against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, as a 19-year-old, during a 7-1 romping.

Chelsea defender Reece James.

He’s one of the club’s most talented players and was handed the captain’s armband in August 2023, having joined the club’s academy aged six. James’ fortunes since have not been auspicious, for he has been ravaged by injuries and pulled from his one-time position at the height of the game.

As you will see below, James is utterly mesmerising when fit and performing at his best, and Chelsea could certainly do with his skillset readily available throughout the campaign.

Not only is he a devastating attacking outlet, but James also enjoyed the defensive side of the game, wrecking his opponent’s offensive efforts, using his stocky frame and athleticism to outwrestle and dispossess.

According to Transfermarkt, James is still worth £34m despite his recent woes, meaning that he is actually worth more than both Madueke and Sancho, who are valued at £24m and £26m, respectively.

It’s worth noting that less than two years ago that value stood tall at £59m, and were it not for his injury misfortune, would perhaps stretch loftier still.

Reece James for Chelsea.

Malo Gusto, 21, is an excellent prospect and impresses when he takes to the pitch for Chelsea, but he’s no James, who offers a distinctive sheen to complement his leadership ability.

Trevoh Chalobah once called the 24-year-old “one of the best in the world”, and it’s clear to see why. Chelsea are at the foundational phase of a new era but need experience and true quality to complement the exciting potential filtering through.

One hailed as an “absolute superstar” by The Athletic’s Liam Twomey, James could be the difference-maker for Maresca this season, and if he can utilise the ongoing international break as a final period of convalescence ahead of a return to full fitness, Chelsea might just restore the talisman to inspire them to heights unseen in several years now.
